I LOVED JUSANT. I hope they make a sequel. Id put it above every other title on this list. One game you missed, not sure if its indie, was HUMANITY. TRINE 5 and BRAMBLE were also really cool. Kinda suprised you didnt add VIEWFINDER which was awesome!
Just some 2023 games on my personal indie list in no particular order. Slay the Princess, Chants of Sennar, Cantata, Viewfiner, Above Snakes, Terra Nil, Power of Ten, Mortal Sin, and The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.
Thanks for sharing your picks, there are some really stylish games among them that I hadn't heard about yet like Cantata, Power of Ten and Mortal Sin 👌
Ahhhh!! Im SO happy you are back. Just the other day I looked at your channel hoping for a new video and here we are! Hope you've been well and welcome back. Great list also.
It´s always a joy to see a GIG video on my feed. Always finding new gems I would´ve never heard of otherwise. This past 2023 year of indie was amazing, I bet it was hard to cut it down to just 10. I, personally, I´m quite surprised to not see Have a Nice Death make the top 10. Art direction is fantastic, characters are lovely, and gameplay loop is simple but effective.
You're back! I missed your videos so much! I wanna mention three other amazing indies that were not on your list but were my favorites last year: Blasphemous 2, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood and Sludge Life 2.
Amazing to see you back. Looking forward to more of your videos. Completed Dredge, Jusant, Cocoon. Loved how Dordogne looks. Have to definitely play that and Sea of Stars too. Currently playing Cassette Beasts. It is absolutely brilliant and I think it deserves a mention.
Always happy to see a new video from you. My tops included Viewfinder, Cocoon, and Worldless. And I cant wait for Pepper Grinder, SCHiM, The Plucky Squire, and THRASHER!
Oh hey! Get Indie Gaming's back! For as much as I loved the journey of Tears of the Kingdom, the one game I played in 2023 that I could not stop raving about to anyone who would listen was Sea of Stars, so it is a joy to see it top your list as well. It's strongly worth mentioning that folks who have played The Messenger first will get a tremendous added layer of enjoyment out of Sea of Stars because both take place in the same universe, and the connections between the two games in terms of lore and even some elements of level design are some of the most brilliant I have ever experienced in a game. (Playing The Messenger first is not required to enjoy Sea of Stars fully, but I would say if one does not do so, one will miss out on all of that -- although you *could* play Sea of Stars first and *then* play the Messenger and perhaps have the same enjoyment the other way around, so-to-speak). Sea of Stars also bears some of its best fruit if one bothers to 100% the game as the rewards the player gets for going the extra mile are also some of the most substantial I have seen in a game in quite some time.
So marvelous that you're back! This is my favorite RUclips channel on indie-gaming, and I love the sound of your elegant voice and the literary textures in your monologues. I hope you commit to being more regular on this channel, as you deserve to have a central podium in this ever-growing world of artsy gaming. I guess there seems to be some debate about "Dave the Diver" being an indie-game, but I would have loved to see it on the list anyways and hear your thoughts on it. Additionally, I would love you to do a throwback on my favorite game I played for 2023, "A Short Hike," which came out in 2019, but deserves a gander by you. It was totally under the radar but it popped into my gaze from a random RUclips day of surfing.
Positive surprise. I have been waiting for this video since the end of December, there was nothing on the channel for more than half a year. I already thought that the channel had been abandoned. I've found a few new sites about indies, but your materials, especially the tops are among my favorites.
@@GetIndieGaming I'm sorry to sound negative, as I very much enjoy your content and was many times excited about your announced returns, what makes this time different from last 3 times you announced to be back only within last year?
The quantity of indie games are increasing exponentially, so channels like yours are pure gold. "A highland song" and " birth" intrigued me the most. Thank you for your good taste selection. Hope you ok. Best regards!! 👍
The man, the myth, and the dang legend himself! Happy to see this upload! Amazing video and the top 5 are all truly beautiful games! Amazing selections! I want to add a few more for me here: 1) 9 Years A Shadow 2) Shadow Gambit 3) Sanabi 4) Pesticide Not Required (beta stage/ trial download) 5) Backpack Hero
It's great to see you return. Thanks for the list of recommendations, I'd only heard of about half of those. I've played few new games last year so I have few to choose from, but I really recommend Stray Gods.
So happy to see you back!!! You were the only channel I had a sub to and I was always hoping to come back and see new content! You always have great recommendations, delivery, and variety in what you suggest so I was so so sooo happy to see you back.
Eastward DLC and Get Indie Gaming video release on the same day, gotta say, yesterday was the best day of 2024 for me since school has been pretty stressful lately. Thanks!
Since you enjoyed Sea of Stars, check out Chained Echoes, if you haven't yet. It came out at the end of 2022, so it didn't get any awards, but it still performed very well in terms of sales and it's well on its way to becoming a cult classic. It's also another game created by a single developer, except for the music. In my opinion it's a more refined experience than Sea of Stars, even if I prefer its pixel art style. From 2023 I'd also highlight The Last Spell, Meg's Monster, Viewfinder, World of Horror, Cassette Beasts, Chants of Sennaar, Blasphemous 2, Thirsty Suitors, Planet of Lana and Ugly.
Welcome back :) Thanks for the list! Two recommendations from me when it comes to 2023 indies: Meg's Monster and A Space For the Unbound. Especially the latter one. It was beautiful, it made me cry, then made me cry more.
What a nice way to start February! Glad to see you again! Great recommendations in this one. I'm always late to most releases, thanks to a ridiculous backlog, but I'm looking to try at least Jusant and Coccon this year. Hope I can find the time.
He's back, wooooooooo :) Birth looks really cool, reminds me of the Rusty Lake Escape Room games Dordogne looks amazing, never thought you'd be able to properly render that kind of art style in a 3D environment. A Highland Song I find to be a bit frustrating with its navigation. I'm never sure where I am or if I'm going the right way, but I'm taking my time with it so I make sure I'm still enjoying myself. Jusant is similar in that the climbing mechanics haven't really clicked with me, but I think I'm getting there. It's good to hear that Seas of Stars isn't too hard, one of the reasons I didn't go for it was because I thought people saying it's a love letter to JRPGs meant it was stupid hard, because that's been my (limited) experience.
There he is. We missed ya. I only played Dredge out of all of these. It’s really good. Definitely up there. I want to play Salt sea Chronicles next. I loved Mutzione so I’m sure I’ll love it.
Welcome back mate, and thanks for the video. Great list! 👌🏻 I was expecting to see a boomer shooter title as well. we had a couple of good boomer shooters in 2023. I personally enjoyed playing warhammer 40k: Boltgun, HROT and Turbo Overkill.
My favorite and most played Indie was Patch Quest. It is so well done and by a single developer. Plus couch co op meant my daughter and I put hours into it. That made it more special.
I would have been extremely surprised if Sea of Stars wasn't here on the list, lol. Personal favorite game of the year here as well, otherwise only played older (indie) games, I think. Putting a few of these on the wishlist. Birth and Dordogne seem like my jam and Cocoon peaks my interest as well. Good list!
That's very true. It brought back so many happy memories of my childhood and early teenage years. A few folks have said I've been too quick to negate the games flaws. That said, I adore it, even with its faults.
Happy to see a new video and apparently more content in the near future! One question though, is it possible to watch more previous livestreams than only the current four that are available through 'Live' and the 'Past Live Stream' playlist (26 videos are set on hidden)?
Sadly due to contractual obligations, which explains my absence here, I am not able to have those streams live. I'm not able to talk about this further.
Excellent list. Apparently Dordogne got an update so it’s not such a pain to platinum. Perhaps there are some honorable mentions in Viewfinder, Gibbon, and Chants of Sennaar!
Sea of Stars was at the top of my list when I saw the preview... However, after playing it I was rather dismayed. Everything is extremely well done with the exception of the writing. All the characters are flat and 1 dimensional. The two protags could have been named 1B and 2A and it wouldn't change anything. Garl is the only one with a personality but that too becomes ingratiating because it's nothing but a constant one note without dynamic development... Don't get me started on the all powerful character that 'chooses not to help' and the 'fart in a bottle.'

Chants of Sennaar and The Wreck would be the omission I can think of
When the world needed him most... he returned. Great to see you all back again! Birth is a must-play for me, now. I didn't even know it existed!
Birth is very under loved. Many thanks for the kind words.
Let me second your statement @grahammartin5491 - this is one of the few channels I actually missed!
