Back in the day (1960’s) we’d give half a crown to our postman, paperboy, and coal man. They’d ring the bell to say “Happy Christmas” … and to collect their money of course. 😊
When I make a big meal, I talk to myself in the kitchen to tell myself. What to do next and my family always says. Who are you talking to? And I tell them myself so I don't forget to do something. Is that normal? Maybe not but I don't care. If I didn't. I'd mess up the whole meal.😂
My mum and dad always left a dozen bottles of beer 🍺 for the rubbish men, as they were hard workers 💪no air conditioned trucks, doing all the work themselves. The would run out back pick up the rubbish and sometimes paper bin, which weighed a tonne and tip it in the back of the truck, and bring the bins back in. The postman had a pushbike and worked extremely hard, such a stoic resilient man. I admired him, and still do. On a summer's day he would be greeted with a cold drink, and drank it gratefully. Brisbane, Queensland, Australia gets extremely hot in the summer, with very high humidity, and hilly suburbs on his route. He quite often stopped in the shade for 10minutes before heading off. Beer seemed to be the acceptable Christmas gift back then, 70's and early 80's, right down to the milkman aswell. I have no memory of the bread and vegetable man selling produce though!!! My parents were very generous, and grateful as it saved so many shopping trips, quite a convenience. I learned alot about kindness through the interactions. The workers were always the same though, so it was great!!!
Gold Coaster here. We just spoke about the rubbish men this morning, we always used to give them a six pack of beer, but it is not so easy nowadays… It was collection day today, they used to come by around 6am, but now it seems it is anywhere between 6am and 1 in the afternoon. The truck does the work, as they sit in the drivers seat, we had to go out, so rubbish was collected by the time we got home.
I always give them all a tip at Xmas as they work very hard and are so stressed with their jobs. I don't know what I would do without them, as I live in the country. Merry Xmas to all delivery men and women and thank you.
Christmas Eve-Eve is a thing here in Norway. It's called "Little Christmas Eve" (Lille juleaften) and it's not an official holiday, but a lot of people have traditions on that day, especially in the evening (food, tv program etc.).
Perhaps the reason they keep changing your postmen is because they are dying of exhaustion!!! Thank you for all the creative and interesting videos/vlogs you keep giving us. Sending love and best wishes to yourself and the cats. Happy Christmas.

Merry Christmas Sean,Kay in Northern country Victoria Australia,We have very sadly bushfires out of control not here but not too far away as the smoke is impacting even Melbourne, prayers for the people and wildlife.I do so look forward to being with you and loving your progress on your home and homestead …burnt turkey sounds great as iam a vego 😂🇦🇺😝👍
Merry Christmas Sean! I’m from Canada .Looking at your pots on the bench, I’m worried about a sudden deep frost. In the past I have buried the pots up to the top of the pot in soil to protect the roots until I’m ready to plant. I’ve buried small seedlings in pots in the ground all winter and they are fine in the spring.
Hi Sean, it was lovely to see your latest plants! I agree, Hibiscuses are so pretty, I really liked that blue one! 😍 With you on the drinking chocolate thing, I'm exactly the same! Yep count me in on Christmas Day that will be fun! If I can't stop for the whole time, I'll definitely pop on and say hello! 👍🏻 Merry Christmas everyone! 🎉🎄🎁☃️
Hi Sean happy Christmas, I see you have bought hibiscus, I have had hibiscus a few times in the past and in my experience they are not deep winter hardy, even though I wrapped them up with horticultural fleece, a deep frost will get to them, these days anything that I suspect isn't hardy, I plant in large tubs and put them in the greenhouse, and I have had better luck that way, good luck with yours, they are beautiful when you see them growing abroad, so exotic, have a smashing Christmas and hope New Year is good to you, love your vlogs 🎄🎄🎅🎅xx
We did when we lived in the countryside as we had the same postman and bin men for years. However now we have moved into the town we get different people all the time so we did not give a box this year.
A very merry Christmas to you Sean and Topsy and Amber. I am absolutely loving your adventures, especially the homestead gardening. Putting plants in is great and it does give us hope for the future. Have a lovely time and go easy on the champagne. Thanks for the fun.
😂 Teasing the roots out! Such joy watching you unbox those lovely plants like a kid on Christmas Day! Love the jumper, looking fresh! Perfect cat reaction to the flowers! Licking his bum 😂
Yes, I give a Christmas gift/tip no matter the circumstances. Their changing work assignments are not their fault. Times are difficult, so I am sure they appreciate being remembered.
It is nice to watch you in the garden. It is just not possible here. In Canada it has been -25 and we have had snow now for two days and apparently it wil not stop until after Christmas. We are most definitely having a white Christmas and travel is a struggle as well. I am not looking forward to my 70k drive to my sons on Christmas Day. I can’t even see my garden for all the snow 😢
@@irenecharrois5199 lower mainland of B.C. right after I sent that comment the heavens opened up and a torrential downpour ensued 🤣 ahh well …. At least I don’t have to shovel it! Merry Christmas!
You would need a 5 foot long by 4 foot wide shed for your tools because they take more room to store than you are thinking , especially if you have to go in the shed to get a tool out.. you also have the trolley and the wheelbarrow to fit in it. so I think a 5 foot by 5 foot will be a better size.
I have hot chocolate rose and it flowers all summer, lovely rose, however the other rose can be more , First season last year, flowered then reflowered later with a better display, lovely colour but did need bit more care, love your plant buys ❤
Years ago I always gave the postman, bin men, milkman and coal man a tip. Now I don’t give any of them a tip because, as you said, you don’t see a postman twice and the bin men can’t even be bothered to put your bins back after emptying and leave them at the end of the road. Also, with the cost of living crisis I can’t afford it. Love your channel btw.
My binman chuked my bin into the back of the truck because the wheels fell off the bin, which I am not suprised by, the way they are knocked about,I am now expected to pay £45 for a new one, so no, they wont be getting a tip from me.
I don't think people give gifts to the mail deliverer or garbage collector in my part of Canada - I've never heard of doing that. I live in an apartment building, and I always give a card and some money to our superintendent who is really great and always helpful. Some time ago, we got fill-in workers from an agency to help out with the routine cleaning and maintenance, but they were different people each time I met one, and their hours are erratic - I think sometimes they were there only on weekends and holidays. For some months now, we've had the same man, and I've seen him often enough to consider him a regular who is always friendly. So I added him to my Christmas list for a card and some cash. Long way of saying that I'd never think about tipping whoever delivers the mail or picks up the garbage, but I do make exceptions for some people.
Beautiful coloured roses and rhododendron. I always enjoy your plant unboxing and seeing where you place them in your garden. Can’t wait until your spring. Sending Christmas cheer from Tasmania, Australia 🎄💫🌟
What has worked for me is; if they visit your house every week or day, tip em! It doesn’t matter if they are different people. It is a difficult job. And if you can, hand it to them in person. But that is just one opinion. I think you have won me over to flowers. 🌹That was a lovely vlog. Thank you Sean boy. 😊
HAPPY CHRISTMAS & enjoy your company! I don't do anything for the postman as they are always different. I did give before our regular guy retired, but no one on permanently now. We don't even have the same Amazon driver.❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Yes, I do to my Post lady but she us my regular - when I had paper delivery did to them also, - think, wouldn’t you want a little something for a job well done!!

Thanks for sharing your day, Sean...I've got an old yellow/orange azalea that my Mom planted 70 years ago... it never disappoints and is early to bloom.. I need to venture out in the rain do a walk about and check my veg garden... thanks for the inspiration...
I loved the choice of plants you bought. My mother had a beautiful purple hibiscus in a hedge in her garden in Newport Monmouthshire but sadly I lost a red one here in Cyprus this year. We have long hot summers and when I went away at the end of summer for a few days it must have got too dry. I finally accepted it will not revive.😪
Nice to see you out in the homestead Sean. I don't give christmas box to bin men etc now either cos like you over the festive period they change. I give them something at Easter instead as you're back to your usual ones then. Great flog thank you 😊
I admire your dedication to your gardens. Hibiscus and azaleas are my favorites, and those roses will the stars of the show. No, I thought you would have guests who will be so lucky . Hope you have a great Christmas day!
I use to get quite a few tips when i was on the post but i was on the same round for years and everybody got to know me. Also i use to leave packets in safe places plus the number of xmas cards with the wrong numbers on was unbelievable 😂 but you got to know your customers if you were the regular postie. A tip, never, ever upset your postie, we are like elephants we never forget and you will find they will do the job to the book and you will find you are going to the office to pick up your parcel instead of it being left in a safe place or a trust worthy neighbour 😂😂. Don't think I'll make it on xmas day, I'll be doing the dinner

Merry Christmas Sean and happy meal Prepping for the big feast. Beautiful plant picks and they will look lovely on the homestead. Having both structures in a row like that might give you a small wind break for a bit more delicate plants, especially on the non windy side of your greenhouse. Last summer I did up a small shed 3x6 foot and 6 foot tall just for my tools. I put a shelf along the back 6 inches from the ceiling for all my snips and knives etc. The walls are all hooked so all my tools hang. It's so nice to have just a place for tools and nothing else. ❤
Lovely plants Sean. I love Azalea’s. The Rose of Sharon plants look beautiful too. Something to look forward to. I leave chocolates and cans of pop for my bin men at Christmas and Easter. I used to give our postie chocolates, but we keep getting different posties now. I don’t get to see the same person. We used to have a lovely lad bringing the post, but he must have finished. I’m cooking my turkey at the moment, a boneless breast roast. I always cook it on Christmas Eve so I can carve it when it’s cooled. It is easier for me to carve, and I can get nice thinner slices from it so it goes further. I’ve a family to feed. They’d eat the blooming lot in one sitting otherwise. This way, I can get several meals from the turkey roast. I keep handwritten notes 📝 for myself in the kitchen when cooking at Christmas so I don’t lose track of what I’m doing. Have you missed your local butcher since he retired? I keep meaning to visit Aberdare Park. Might go this week to walk off some Christmas calories. 😊

If you can get your hands on an Easy Does It rose... I don't think you will regret it. It's gorgeous and a prolific bloomer.
Just googled it and ordered one. Thank you.
Sean don't waste your cardboard. Use it around the plantings to deter the weeds. All the best for the quiet period when the shops are shut.

Merry Christmas Sean 🎉🎉
