Hoshimachi Suisei is a virtual youtuber who used to be an indie but joined the group known as Hololive later on, she mostly does singing streams, gaming streams and a bunch of other stuff. The whole Vtuber thing is like streamers and content creators wearing masks, many people do it for a multitude of reasons, privacy, embarrassment or even just wanting to play a certain character on stream.

Exactly. Suisei was actually there actually singing into the microphone wearing motion capture gear. What we see here is her 3D avatar moving with her in real time, it wasn't just edited in later.

Suisei tried to join a few idol/singer groups in the real world prior to becoming a vtuber. She was always turned away. She then decided she was going to try becoming a vtuber. But she had no money to pay for an artist to draw her character. Or to pay for a rigger/animator to make the art move along with her tracked movement.
    So she did it herself.
She debuted as an independent Vtuber, working on her music all the while.
She joined one vtuber company, but it wasn't a good fit, and left after a month, going back to being independent.
She applied to join Hololive, one of the biggest Vtuber companies. They liked her. But they wanted her to become a different character. They didn't want her to join as herself. She refused.
Months later, in need of some help, she went back to Hololive. Desperate to gain some support, but refusing to give up on herself. Hololive relented, and allowed her to join their new music division, INNK, as herself, Hoshimachi Suisei.
Hololive hadn't really planned on having to support two artists in their music division, so her support at first was less than she had hoped. But still she persevered.
She eventually transferred over to Hololive proper, leaving the music division, INNK, while still focusing on her music.
And through lots of hard work and tough times, here she stands. The first vtuber to ever appear on The First Take.
She will be releasing her 2nd album soon.
Hoshimachi, depending on how you read the Kanji that makes up the name, can be read as "City of Stars", while Suisei means "Comet"
    She truly is a Star.

Stellar Stellar is one of the most empowering songs I've ever heard. That line of not being Cinderella but the hero that goes and rescue her alone is amazing.

  • @arizona_anime_fan

the emotions in this song are profound, she paints a picture of someone "struggling to break through" how she doesn't want to see what "tomorrow" brings because she's engrosed in her music and singing, allowing her to escape from the reality staring at her, that she's nothing special and not a star. it's about someone dreaming of who she wants to be and be seen of, and not wanting to be in the day facing what she is. this is a deeply personal song to her, because its about her struggles. she struggled her whole life trying to become an idol in the highly competitive japanese idol industry, only to meet rejection everywhere. told she wasn't anything special she was a jack of all trades, and special at nothing. then before she knew it she was in her 20s and too old to break into the japanese idol industry... despite years of desperately trying. so she turned to vtubing, she made her own 3d model and started streaming to hundreds of people... not thousands. that's right she wasn't even a success as a vtuber, told by the old vtuber agency that would talk to her that they would maybe consder her if she could build a following. so she grinded as an indy vtuber for years, getting little to no traction. instead of giving up she just doubled down, and then she got her break when a collab stream she participated in went viral, she was signed by hololive and now she's a big enough deal that "the first take" has her on as the first vtuber to do the first take.
her story is one of perserverence, dedication and never say die - never give up. and stellar/stellar is a wonderful anthem to her struggles to break through as the star she knew she was. how she never wanted someone to save her, she wanted to save herself.

the girl you see singing is Suisei (soo - ee - say - ee) herself. She is a vtuber (virtual youtuber) from an an idol agency named Hololive.
(unspoken knowledge: vtubers use webcams and motion capture to track their movements and apply them to the character they show in public. you could say a bit like Wrestling where they have a stage character essentially separate from their irl.)

Always happy to have more people checking out the Hololive girls. We're pretty proud of her being the first vtuber to ever land on TFT. Suisei's got some fantastic musical chops. Definitely recommend this and GHOST from her. Like the others said they use some pretty solid motion capture technology for them to use 3d inserts as their "stage personas"/characters basically. Lets them pursue their activities with some anonymity or just flex their creativity/be something more or different.
If you really enjoyed Suisei's TFT performance I'd recommend looking at one of her MVs like the one for Stellar Stellar, GHOST or anything off her new album Spectre. There are also a lot of other talents in her organization Hololive with fantastic MVs/music and some really heavy, personal lyrics like Watame's "My Song", Towa's Palette , AZKi's Inochi, etc.
Once again, thanks for checking out Suisei!

Hoshimachi Suisei is a Vtuber from Hololive JP (ホロライブ) of Cover corporation. Vtubers are virtual youtubers, ie. content creators who use a virtual avatar to create content. Hololive has more than 50 talents who can sing and dance and play games, branched into Japanese, English and Indonesian branches.
Hoshimachi Suisei is a talented singer who many times had thought of quitting, yet pushed on thanks to her fanbase "Hoshiyomis". She plays tetris a lot and likes plushies.
The CEO of Cover is Motoaki Tanigo, memed as "Yagoo". He supports the talents and their management to carry out decisions to produce goods and merchandise. He is known as the "Best girl" among the fans as he respects the talents' wishes when they go through tough times. He started Cover as a tech company for VR and entered the content creation scene by suggestion of Tokino Sora, the founding member of Hololive.
He also created a male spin-off of Hololive called "Holostars" (ホロスターズ) whose songs are great to listen to.
All in all, Hololive is big in the Vtuber scene, and is a rabbit hole of content creation to explore.
Typed it out so it helps those who are new to the fanbase
    :^)

earlier last year, for the vtuber fest (part of the nicovideo choukaigi event) suisei and kaf performed a song together. there should be an eng sub clip where suisei recounts that.
suisei also had kaf on her radio show last week where they talked a bit and exchanged contacts. there is an eng sub clip of that radio segment.
there, they both stated their utmost respect for each other's talents.
asano ruri is also good friends with suisei

I think it would be great closure? Full circleness? if u would find and watch a hoshimachi suisei's story video to elaborate on the background of what this is about even if u don't go into the rest of the girls ^^

You comment that it surprised you and that was exactly what they were going for. Suisei would explain on her stream after the episode aired that the standard banter and throat warm up before the actual take was foregone at the suggestion of her manager/Cover Corp's team and The First Take's staff. Since she's the first vtuber they've ever featured, it was expected there will be those cynical or outright hostile to it; so it was decided she should just come out in silence and blow all the skeptics away on the first note. Does nothing alleviate her nerves as she confessed, but you can't argue with the results.
If she's caught your attention with this, then the next best thing to check out is her cover of Ayase's popular Vocaloid song "Cinema". She performs it with Astel Leda and Izuru Kanade: two fellow vtubers who stream for the same company as her in its men's branch Holostars. It's proved to be quite a hit and they more recently produced a 3D music video for the company's New Year's karaoke event.
