I grew up very poor and my family didn't celebrate Christmas. We had only one Christmas with my grandparents when I was nearly 5 years old. I got a tea set and a doll and my little brother got Tonka trucks; a dump truck and a digger. We were thrilled! Now I celebrate Christmas with my family and we go out up the mountains and cut our own tree in early December and decorate it in the living room. We have lights on the fence outside and make Christmas cake, pecan pie, turkey or goose and mulled wine. We always watch A Muppet Christmas Carol with the kids and play games together. We buy our children a few toys they would like and some clothes that they need. They also have generous grandparents who buy them new clothes every year which is such a blessing! They are not spoiled, but have all they need and then some.
My biggest memory is being 5 and wanting a red pram in the local toy shop window, mum would say “you have you eye on that pram don’t you” then she’d say “ I’m afraid it’s too expensive, maybe next year” (I was youngest of 6 children and money was tight) Christmas morning came and I ran down the stairs excitedly, there next to the tree was that little red pram! I couldn’t believe it, it wasn’t until I grew up I found out my mum had gone in to that toy shop every week and paid some money off that little pram. Thank you Lucy for these wonderful memories and a very merry Christmas to you and your family.
This is so wonderful, and look, you remembered that all your life, I bet you can close your eyes and recreate it entirely - what a wonderful thing your Mom did. A very Merry Christmas to you too x
My perspective of the display is that it accurately reflected the lived experiences of many working-class people. I was born in 1969, so I saw all of the 1970s and 80s Christmasses (just). The Christmas decorations in 1970 were the same ones we used right up until my brother and I moved out of home. It became an eclectic mix of old decorations and new ones as the old ones got broken and were not repairable. Putting up the decorations often included Dad spending time soldering the old fairy lights to make them work for just one more year, and trying o find which bulb had blown which prevented the whole string from lighting up. What an invention the fuse bulb was, so you no longer had to worry about it, but in our house where the lights originated in the 1950s and the 1960s no such amazing advances were to be had. Mum also liked a whole riot of colours so no considered colour scheme or style. Just put up what you had. The types of presents we got were the same during this period too. The local toy shop had a Christmas club, so my mum paid what she could each week and then in December bought whatever toys she could with it. The remainder of our presents were practical - new pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers, jumpers, socks, pens and pencils for school, colouring books etc. Of course, there was always the obligatory selection pack of chocolate bars and at least one Christmas annual - my bothers tended to be Rupert the Bear and mine was something like Twinkie or later on Jackie. A lasting memory for me was the days between Christmas and New Year when we would venture out and buy the annuals we didn't have for a fraction of the cost. I think you could get three or four after Christmas for the price of one full-priced one. My mum used to also buy wrapping paper and cards for the next year because that was also slashed in price. She didn't worry about colour schemes so the wrapped presents were a clash of colours and styles. Like your mum, my mum also saved up with the milkman to get a Christmas hamper. I think that the tins of meat and hotdogs etc weren't about providing food for Christmas as such, but for meals in January. At least in our house, Mum spent all available money buying food for Christmas Eve, Christmas day and Boxing day, that the store cupboard was a little bare after Christmas and that is when the tinned food in the hamper came in handy. My recollection was there wasn't much alcohol around. I remember the little bottles of Babycham, Pomagne, Advocaat and lemonade, and the green bottles of the drink called snowballs. Dad always seemed to get a bottle of Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry from his work. In those days, it came in a shiny gold box, that just screamed Christmas. Pomagne was the drink that went with Christmas dinner, but not for us kids.
I loved reading every word of this - I had absolutely forgotten about the lights coming out of the box and not working .. and yes, Dad used to get the kit out and start playing with them until they worked - sometimes they didn't and it would be a big rush to find some that did. But we had the same lights for years and years, I am not sure I ever remember us buying new ones. Thanks for sharing, really beautiful words - and great perspective on the hamper too - never thought of it like that but I suspect you are right!
Hi Lucy - that was beautiful ! The description of your Christmas's brought back so many forgotten memories. I was born in 1955, and I don't remember Christmas much before 1960. My Grandad always came to stay, being a widower by then, and I had to give up my bedroom to him, and share with one of my older sisters. I remember driving Dad mad, pestering him to take us to the local farm to get our tree. After us children were packed off to bed, Mum would decorate it, and we would squeal with delight the next morning. I'd totally forgotten about the hampers ! Mum would belong to the 'Christmas Club' at Williams Brothers Grocers, and pay a bit every week - also did the same with the 'Turkey Club' at their Butchers branch next door. Then every year the hamper would be delivered, and all these 'exotic' goods would be unpacked . Then the turkey would be delivered and the excitement really set in then - Christmas was really going to happen ! Mum would make the puddings on 'Stir up Sunday', and right up until she died in 1995, we would all be 'summoned' back home to make a wish and have a stir of the fantastic smelling pudding mixture in a huge mixing bowl. Those days are a treasure to remember, and I wouldn't have changed a thing ! Thank you Lucy for all your fascinating videos - you always manage to stir up distant happy memories. Last week my sisters and I all got together and visited our Cousin, and had various 'outings' to start our Christmas off. All safely back in our separate homes again now and no real arguments were had - just a few tense moments - families EH ! Take special care Lucy, and thank you again 🙂 X X
That was so interesting thank you for Sharing ❤ My Eldest Sister was born 1955 Me 1958 and the youngest was born 1960 Yes the 60s and 70s Christmas 🎄 I remember my Dad holding big family party’s
I love this - poor dads eh! Always nagged for something! We had a plastic tree until I was about 10 then we started going to the farm, then we were nagging him to look at lights AND get trees all while he was doing 6 days nights ... thanks for sharing this, it's lovely for not just only me but others to read too - wishing you a very very happy Christmas .. and too your cousins too! Love how you are still in touch xxx
The good old days when everyone enjoyed Christmas 🎄 when everything was cheap and everyone was full of Christmas spirit always great tv shows abd food and drink was cheap and Christmas spirit was so amazing 👏 thanks Lucy for bringing back happy memories from the 70s 🎉bless you always 🙏 😊
Thanks Stephen! I do miss how simple it seemed, but maybe it was simple because I was a kid and everything was done for me 😂 I love seeing all the old toys though and I enjoy visiting this every year - it's a highlight for me x
Wonderfully nostalgic video. I can't describe just how much I enjoyed it and the memories it evoked. We had the same decorations for so many years, including a silver Christmas tree, very popular at the time, which gradually got more and more threadbare. We had Quality Street or Roses, but only at Christmas, and yes those shortbread biscuits with the Scottish piper on the tin lid - I stored my toy soldiers in a couple of those for years. Christmas dinner was the same throughout the 70s and 80s, and basically hasn't changed even today. We got a fresh turkey from a farmer my dad knew, and he and I would collect it on Christmas Eve morning. Ah, yes, Dundee cakes, I haven't had a slice of that in such a long time. When I was very young I would get in bed between my parents and open my presents there. Argos catalogues were a bit after my toy-wanting time, but my mom had the John Moore's catalogue and I eagerly awaited the Autumn/Winter edition as that was when all the toys would be in it. Wonderful memories, and for me bittersweet as most of my relatives - aunts and uncles etc are no longer with us. Truth be told, I would go back to those simpler times in a heartbeat.
Love this, thank you for sharing .. we have A Dundee cake this year .. I can't wait to eat it! My aunty Belinda makes the best one though! And yes so many people no longer with us but we'll raise a glass to those good old days and look forward to the future xx
It’s mad how many of these items trigger a old forgotten memory I have just laid my brother to rest and this Xmas is going to be really hard for me thanks again for the nostalgia it’s times like these that make you realise how important memories really are merry Christmas Lucy thanks you for the Brillant 2024 content wishing you a happy healthy and lucky new year ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss Liam, it's so hard; making that video I was thinking about so many special people but I hold them in my heart with love and they all made me who I am today. So much love to you and your family. Christmas will be different but he will be remembered ❤️
Honestly Lucy, I didn't want this video to end! I could listen to you all day and I couldn't stop smiling. The sound of the electric knife, now that's a sound from the past. Lol. Thank you, this was brilliant.🥰
Thank you Jackie, that means such a lot, I wasn't sure if it was a bit self indulgent but I genuinely love Christmas and have such fond memories of that time in my life - I am so glad you enjoyed x
I'm an 88 baby, so Christmas when I was little was in the 90s, but there were still traces of the kind of things you're talking of here. I find it so nostalgic to look back on now. I try to make my kids Christmas similar because I remember how much joy it brought me as a young child.
I was born in 80 so I got 80s kid and 90s teenager - the best of both worlds! I think it's awesome you are doing that for your kids, the traditions are new these days but I always think whatever you do at Christmas makes a life time impression!
Ah Mr. Frosty, my poor daughter wanted one for many years but sadly the shops were always bare, eventually Father Christmas did bring her one, about 30 years later!!! I'm old and disabled now so rarely go out but if I did I would rush to Woolies, how they ever let that close down is beyond me. Thank YOU Lucy for being such an amazing lady and giving us these wonderful videos. I hope you have a fantastic Christmas and thank you yet again. Stay safe, (btw, hope ribs have healed well). Take care, Lil x
Hahaha, that's so funny!!! A few years ago I finally got MY Mr Frosty too ... and not only one ... TWO .. two people in my family had the same idea !!! Shows what an impact it made on me! I don't understand why they closed Woolworths, B&M and Home Bargains are doing so well and I think they could have made it work .. a sad loss to our high streets indeed!
Argos didn't exist when I was 5-16. We had catalogues , Littlewoods, marshall wards, grattens, freeman's, empire stores etc..we used to circle stuff we'd like when the autumn/winter cat came out.. crammed with toys, games , electronics, bikes etc , everything that bussled chat about in playground.
It is a little disconcerting when one's memories are displayed in a museum. Seeing my favourite childhood toys inside a glass case makes one think; Bloody Hell, am I that old? It seems like only yesterday Museums contained Victorian Dolls and Tin Soldiers. As for turkey meat... No thank you. I'm with you Lucy, I Can't stand the damn stuff. Have a grand Christmas me dearie. Thank you for an entertaining year.
That's how I felt!!! I had that sylvanian families narrow boat and I swear it was only 2 years ago .. honest 😂😂😂 it was lovely to hear people walking around explaining to their children and grandchildren "what Christmas was like" and I had to give myself a date check 😂
I've actually written down all my memories of my Christmases as a 70s child and I too, remember them with really deep nostalgia, affection and love, and for the loved ones we've lost over the years. Thank you for sharing yours, and the house visit, Lucy!
Absolutely! I am glad you have written them down, I did too during lockdown as I was so depressed and missed everyone so much - just made me feel less alone x
What wonderful memories you have Lucy! I grew up in the 50's and 60's so mine are a little different, but still very happy. Like you Boxing day was my favourite too, the fabulous cold buffet at My Mom's identical twins house Auntie Doris. The table groaning with cold delights, the party games where everyone, of all ages took part. The laughter and singing. Auntie's best china out for the event covered in pink cabbage roses which my daughter now treasures. Crisp, frosty goodbyes at the door as we all wended our way home, tired but filled with the delicious food, laughter and wonderful memories. Thank you for bringing them back to me. Hoping you and yours have a peaceful and loving Christmas making more lovely memories. xx
Thank you so much. I really do miss the Boxing Day meet up! We do a little one but it's not the same as that groaning table - aunty gill did the best job. She never seemed flustered or stressed either but she must have been really x
What a fantastic look at 1970s and 80s Christmas. The early 1980s were where I have so many fond memories of Christmas. You are spot on Lucy about that cosy safe feeling. It felt so amazing. I grew up in Birmingham and remember Mom taking me to Lewises to see Father Christmas and always wanting a train set. My nan lived in a small flat in a tower block in Northfield and she loved Christmas and always had a tinsel tree up and lots of decorations. She bought so many presents even though she didn't have much money. Lovely times. Merry Christmas to you, Lucy. Great channel.
I live in Northfield! I bet I know the flats where your Nan lived. I have a really really clear memory of going to Lewis' to see Father Christmas, it was PACKED - queues and queues of kids and families and he arrived in a helicopter - I swear he did .. although no one else seems to remember that, I often wonder if I made it up, but going to see him there was such a big deal to me! I think we only went once!
I cant remember the helicopter 😂.. Nan lived on the Frankley estate, she moved there from back to back housing in Handsworth in the 1960s. She loved her flat. Sadly they pulled them down in the early 2000s 😢
So many shared memories. I'm alone now, but I transport myself back to the joy of the late 60's and all of the 70's at Christmas...in my mind and heart. I knew it was something very special even then. Never to be recaptured, but loved with every atom in my mortal body. Thank you Mum and Dad...I can only hope that you are still around in some way that I cannot comprehend......oh how I miss them. xxxxxxxxx
Bless you Paul, that's so very kind, I was very emotional making this video but I am pleased I did, it seems to be resonating with a lot of people and it means such a lot x
Your Childhood Christmas is a mirror of mine. I love Christmas & i mean obsessively. I am trusted within the family to reminisce & recreate our traditional, but happy Christmases from the 80's. I loved hearing your stories & seeing all the old games & toys; a flashback for sure. P.S. I never got a Mr Frosty either & I so wanted one! ⛄
We would get on very well Nicola .. I am "Captain Christmas" in our family too! I think you always need that one person pushing it all along and making things happen! ... Do you think we should start a "Mr Frosty Disappointment club" I think it would have thousands of members!!! We all wanted it so badly didn't we? My cousin had one .. but by the time I got my hands on it they had drank all the syrup!
Dear Lucy, that was such a lovely video. I loved Christmas as a young child in the early 60s. It was a lovely time and thank you for reminding me of my teen years in the 70s. You have brought so much interesting content to me and I look forward to what comes next. Have a wonderful Christmas xx
Thank you so much! I am really excited about the future for the first time in ages, I was really stuck in a rut before I started this channel and it's been wonderful - couldn't do it without the support of people like yourself - so Happy Christmas Sally, I hope whatever you do it's restful and happy xx
Boy, in America we put our tree up as soon as possible. Like the day after Thanksgiving. The longer it's up, the more time you have to be in the Christmas spirit! I mean, any chance to be joyful is the way to go. Even more important these days, when joy is truly precious.
My dad worked in a chemical plant, never went out drinking and so was a very reliable worker - so every year it didn’t matter what shift pattern he was on, it was a given he would be on the 6am - 2pm shift on Christmas Day (for 20 years!) so we always opened our Christmas presents on Christmas Eve. We would go to bed, my parents would pull out and wrap all the presents and arrange them in piles, and then shout upstairs “Father Christmas has been!” Then all six children would come running down stairs and open our presents. Because I was the oldest it was a shock the year I turned 18 and my pile of presents was so much smaller than my siblings, as aunties and uncles didn’t get presents for grown ups. We used to go to grandparents house for a family party every year and I used to love it - they used to play a game where they hid pennies and coins all over the living room and we had to find them. Every week grandparents would put 10p a week in an envelope with your name on and they would give them out at the end of the party, so you could spend it in the January sales.
I loved reading this so much! My Dad was a shift worker too but over Christmas they had a full factory close down so he was always off Christmas week - but sometimes he had to work right up until Christmas morning and I always think he must have been deliriously tired even if he never showed it. I might do that game with my niece and nephew - they would absolutely love it!!!
Happy Christmas! Loved the video, and your commentary ranged from beautifully poetic to very funny (the the dog gorging the Christmas food and you being, um, unwell in the sweetie jar). I wish there had been more 1970s stuff in the beautiful hall, as I'm older than you are so was a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s. But it was still amazing and I was watching the video going, "I remember that! And that! And that!" You look fab, BTW, really dressed up for the occasion. xxx
Thank you! I have had that coat for years and it's so "extra" I don't wear it very often but always bring it out for Hanbury Hall - it fits right in! Yes, this year they seem to have concentrated more on the 80s stuff, last year it was far more 70s. It's nice how they change it every year though, you never know what will be there ...
@@throughlucyslens I've never been to Hanbury Hall, a pity as I spent 19 years in the West Midlands so it was an easy for us drive really. Maybe one Christmas it will happen. I love a good statement coat - I have a floor length faux leopard fur coat from the 1980s that I wear maybe once a decade, and it always gets comments. xxx
Hi Lucy! My mom and I have watched this over and over because we LOVE this!!!!! It is so funny and so sweet. Truly, thank you so much for sharing. We adore you. ❤ from Houston, TX, USA
Oh that's so lovely .. I don't usually watch my own videos but I have this one! It's made me so happy making it - I'm thrilled your Mom & yourself like it so much x
Thanks for spending your time watching. Really appreciate it! It's lovely how memories can bring strangers together - I love it ❤️

Another brilliant video lucy love your outfit. I remember buying my daughter ed the duck bubble bath back in the early 90's. What iv give to turn the clock back to being able to have a Christmas with my mum and great nanna.
This was lovely, my daughters were young in the 70s and 80s and I recognised so much , my husband was a chef and Christmas was his busiest time so making it special for the girls was left to me ,by the time it came to 25th he'd seen so many turkeys he would come home late in the afternoon and eat bacon and egg before being shown everything Father Christmas had brought 😊❤
Oh Judith, I too am married to a chef .. so you can understand why I go everywhere on my own !!! A few years ago he got food poisoning off those rotten turkeys .. the whole batch they sent was off and he was really poorly over Christmas. We never have turkey anymore - last thing he wants to see! We always have bacon and eggs Christmas morning too :)
Lovely Lucy! It's a wonderfully nostalgic video. Thank you for sharing your Christmas memories with us. So often, it's our memories of times gone by that make the present all the more meaningful. Happy Christmas from across the pond 🎄
I decorated my tree this year with colored lights since I was feeling nostalgic so this video is perfect. Thank you! I get anxious and depressed at Christmas so not really enjoyable but how fun to hear your memories. Merry Christmas or maybe Happy Christmas ?
The coloured lights do make you feel cozy, I'm sorry to hear Christmas sometimes makes you feel sad,'it's understandable (i suffer from anxiety myself) but don't be alone, my email address is in my bio cz
@ you are so sweet. I have been married for 34+ years (I never remember 😄) and my husband tries his best to do things but I told him I’m ok with it. I love to just stay home and stay put.
What a fabulous display! So! Many! Memories!!!! OMG the 'Relax, Don't Do It" T-shirt from Frankie Goes To Hollywood, I'd forgotten about that, always remember the Wham! 'Choose Life" ones! Thank you for a lovely trip down memory lane, your Boxing Days sound like mine, off at an aunties house for a really relaxed day.
wonderful, Thanks for sharing your own personal memories, You definitely succeeded in your aim to stir memories of Christmas past for this viewer, both of my own childhood in the 70's and early 80's and those spent with my young family either side of the turn of the millennium. Once again heart felt thanks for this one.
Amazing Lucy, happy memories. Thank you for the fabulous narrative and what a lovely house. All the old sweets I recognised on the tree. The Hornsea saffron pottery my mother collected. The tree wonderful. My favourite day was Christmas Eve and still is. It was the anticipation of what was to come. 🐞
Firstly I love, love your pink outfit - it’s amazing 🤩 And yes your description of Christmas was brilliant. I have been left with a million memories swirling around my head ❤❤❤ Thank you & Merry Christmas 🤶🇳🇿🇳🇿
Thank you! I've had that coat years and it sits in the wardrobe until Hanbury hall every year 😂😂😂 Happy Christmas Heather, thanks for all your support this year x
You are so kind, honestly this voice over took me a long time do as I kept getting tearful, many of the people in these memories are no longer here anymore but every year I make Auntie Gills Trifle and put a banner up to remember my Dad and that Christmas he let us go mad ... they are all with us in our hearts x
Thank you Lucy for your nostalgic video about your personal Christmas's past. How simple they were, no pressure and Im 10 yrs younger than you but identify with your defining moments. it was magical and every year we went to see Santa before Christmas Day, in a local department store, when my cousins came up from the country. Like you I also liked Boxing Day and we went every year to my mums brothers house for all the left overs and my aunt was a brilliant baker, so we had a choice of four desserts. My cousins were much older than me, so they always had a big sock full of surprises for me. So it was like having a second Christmas. Loved those times and I try to keep Christmas simple to this day with all the decorations my kids have made in the past Christmas's, as well as the angel that was on the tree in my childhood. She looks very tired now her wings are all bent, but she represents all the Christmas's past!
I love that you have the same angel! I wish we had ours, I wonder what happened to her, my Dad did leave LOADS of stuff in the loft once when we moved though so I suspect she ended up there!!! Thanks for sharing your memories, it's amazing although we are all different, different families, some things are just the same x
Thank you very much! I wasn't sure whether to do it or not but I'm glad I did as it seems to have brought happiness to loads of people - always my aim ❤️
I loved it.... brought back many memories as i ws a teenager in the early and mid 80's. We didn't have a lot, but it was lovely just being with family. Thank you and have a fabulous Christmas xx
Absolutely, being with family was what it was all about for me: I am heading off soon to my sisters for our "Christmas Day" as they are going abroad this year - I'm really excited 😂
What a wonderful, thought-provoking video! I've been struggling to feel Christmassy this year for some reason, but this has made me feel stirrings of it for the first time so thank you! Content like this is what RUclips should be for - peaceful and warming. Thanks Lucy. I grew up in the '90s but my siblings are 10-20 years older and my parents never really moved with the times (luckily!), so we carried on a lot of these traditions into my childhood too. 😊
I love this! I must admit although I love Christmas I struggle more to "feel it" unless I go back to these times, I think I just had no stress and no worries whereas now I'm rushing about trying to make things nice for everyone else and it feels stressful - I'm trying to let go this year and enjoy some of the old feelings of joy ❤️ Happy Christmas x
I loved this!! Thanks Lucy for sharing your stories. I was 🎄poor as a young child and I still remember having one 2 or 3 gifts and treasuring them and the time I spent with mom handmaking our decorations. The best of times.
Hello Lucy, thank you so much for sharing your cozy memories. Your videos are great company for me. I wish you and your channel the best Christmas and New Year.
Another amazing video Lucy, it had us both chatting about our christmas pasts. The narration was perfection, really set the scene. I cannot look at a tin of Roses in the same way now though, we were crying with laughter! Merry christmas to you and yours x.
Hey Lucy, what a fab trip down memory lane, me and my sister had a lot of those toys and games back in the late 60s early 70s. I was always a daydreamer and sat for ages in front of the tree looking at all the pretty coloured lights and imagining all sorts of images the colours cast on the wall behind the tree. Magical!😊 To this very day, my Christmas tree is always a riot of colours! Thankyou for taking us round these interesting old places with you - it’s always a joy. Have a Merry Christmas there and remember to have a watch of Oliver too! 😂
Hello Lucy . I am a new subscriber from Louisiana , USA. I am so happy I discovered your channel. Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories of your childhood Christmases. It brought back many of my own memories of Christmases in the 1960's and 70's. I do know what a Mr. Frosty is, they were popular here too. I am sorry you never got one and share your disappointment. I desperately wanted the board game, " Mystery Date " . Somehow, Santa never got the message. Thank you again. Merry Christmas from Louisiana.
Funny how for some things Father Christmas just isn't listening isn't it .. we had a similar game here called "dream date" the advert made it look absolutely amazing .. but I didn't get that either, in retrospect my Mom was right, she didn't have the money to be buying things that would be played with once and forgotten about after the novelty wore off!
Oh Lucy what a wonderful video. Absolutely loved it. You describe everything so well , I just feel I’m there with you. Brought lots of memories back for me. Thanks so much. I wish you a very happy new year 🥳 xxx
Strange revisiting Christmas of my childhood and the gifts. The yearly circling of the argos catalogue. 😂 Yeah we all miss good ole woolworths. Hope you have a fantastic Christmas Lucy and happy new year 🎉
The Jackie annual, fabulous. Great video Lucy, lovely to see your family photos. I've tried pheasant, not my thing either. You've made me so nostalgic, I'm going to make a cheese and pickled onion porcupine .
My head is so far removed from all things "christmas" this year, but the simple memories here in your video were lovely. A lot of work went into this video.
Thank you for bringing back so many memories. I was born in the early 50s & Christmas was very different then. I remember having lighted candles in metal clips that were put on the ends of the tree branches & my Mum getting a bit tipsy as she sampled the brandy butter she made to go with the Xmas pudding. The best present was always the Stocking.
I love the candles that clip on! I've tried to get some but you just can't get them anymore that don't have blinding LCD lights - they give me headache 😂 have a very Happy Christmas ❤️🎄
Oh Lucy, your memories have made me cry. Christmas was the same for me when I was younger, I think we maybe a similar age ❤. Ive been to Hanbury Hall a few times, I didnt realise they did such a lovely set up for xmas. Great video 🤩. Helen x
For the past 2 years my wife has allowed me to fill our front room with the old lovely foil decorations. Being born in ‘79 they’re what stood out to me as a child. Heidi let me get a few last year, this year I went 10 fold 😂 Seeing the old board games on here evoked memories, battle ship, game of life, I remember the adverts for them. And when you said circling things in the Argos catalogue, me and my brother did that but also ripped the pages out so they were easy to find the items again…. Mum wasn’t so pleased at that 😂 We always used to get a tub of flumps too 😂 Thank you Lucy, Merry Christmas 🎄
I like this .. ripping the pages out seems a good system to me! I decorate my house as if Slade are coming round any minute with Roy Wood to do a show - I love it - pure dopamine and we need it in the darkness of winter!
Hi Lucy, You may have been disappointed with Mr Frostie. I really wanted one, and when I managed to get one, I realised how badly made it was. The ice just would not crush, which defeats the object entirely! I think this was a blessing in disguise for you! 😂 I really love these Christmas videos you have posted recently. Thank you so much!! 😍
You are so welcome! I hate admitting my Mom was right (she said mr frosty would be rubbish and we didn't have a freezer so where was the ice coming from?) but I need to know was that syrup as delicious as it looked on the advert? 😂
@throughlucyslens I don't remember much about the syrup so it can't have been all that good. You couldn't crush the ice so there was nothing to put the syrup into anyway! It wasn't nearly as good as the slushies you get in cafes. I think your mum was very wise! 😂 X
Thank you Lucy,,,,this was nice alot of cozy memories popped up. I loved to read books and eat chocolates and watch Christmas movies, maybe I should read some great books and eat chokolats this year.🥰😍🤗🎅🤶🧑🎄.
You're a treasure, Lucy! Being of the same generation, none of your references were lost on me. You remember so much - some of which I'd forgotten - right down to that big glass jar of Roses. Even at the age I am I'm horribly nostalgic for the era we grew up in. It feels like a lost, disappeared way of life, replaced by Smartphones, LED lights and half-empty shopping centres. Btw, I DID get the Mr. Frosty toy, and it wasn't half as good as it looked on the telly. I seem to recall the ice- grinder bit not being big or strong enough to crush the ice cubes to make slush! 😂Happy new year to you and yours!
Hey Jenny! Happy New Year! And yes I miss it too, it just seemed safe and happy, probably because someone else was doing all the hard work to make it magical - but it just seemed .. warmer some how! You know I haven't been to a single shop this Christmas, seems mad as shopping was such a highlight / treat back then, now I just dread it! I guess I am getting old! haha
My mom was a single parent in the 70s and worked so hard while my grandparents who lived upstairs took care of my sister and me after school. We didn't have much, but we had fun. This brought it all back to me--thank you so much, and merry Christmas from New York!
So many things here reminded me of Christmas. We weren't well off and my Mother didn't like Christmas, still doesn't, haha! I also wanted a Mr Frosty, alas still never got one. What I did get one year was a tiny tears, I was so happy, she went with me everywhere. And, believe it or not, I still have her, 50 years later, and she's even gone grey! As most of my family have moved abroad, I love my boxing day buffet, I do one every year. Seeing all the retro toys, books etc was brilliant. Thanks again, Lucy ❤
You are so welcome! I loved hearing about tiny tears! I had a dolly I called "johnathon" I loved him so much! I think it's so cute she's gone grey! What a girl x
Thank you, thank you, thank you Lucy, for all your beautiful, emotive uploads over the year but especially for this one. I relate so much to your feelings and memories every time but this one, wow❤ I also like to keep Christmas simple like my childhood. I was a decade before you so a teen when you were 4 and was blessed to enjoy the 70'S and 80'S growing up. I think I need to watch this one a few times to take it all in, warm tears flowing again. Have a wonderful Christmas and thank you again for your care, time and work xx
You are so welcome: thank you for your kind words, it was very cathartic making this and I really enjoyed it and had a little sob myself doing the voice over - happy years of cherished times x
Lucy, loved this one! Merry Christmas from the Commonwealth of Virginia to you, your family, and all the Through Lucy's Lens family!! Oh, and Rupert too! 🎄🎄🎄
Lucy, your nostalgia video was just lovely! Funny how music, or smells, or lights or “things” can transform us back to a time during Christmas that was magical to us! Mr Frosty was THEE ongoing disappointing toy you never received??? Mine was a round trip ticket to Liverpool with motel accommodations and spending money so my cousin Keats and I could live among our kindred spirits…..THE BEATLES and other rock n rollers of the UK who just so happened to be on Liverpool soil! 😂🤣😂🤣 Yes, I’m much closer in age to your Mum now, but my desire to get my Christmas Holiday from way back when is still here ! Have a lovely rest of your week, hopefully Mr Frosty will be on sale or “offer” and you can treat your loved ones to snow cones on Boxing Day! ox💕🇺🇸 PS…..Ask your Mum, did she ever want to look like Twiggy? I went on a diet determined by summer I was going to have her physique! My look like Twiggy Diet lasted only 1/2 day, it was Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Day at school, and I gave in to my temptations how and when I would eat the food I wanted!!! 😹😹😹😹 😋
I have some VERY VERY Exciting news for you Linda. .. OZZY WAS IN BIRMINGHAM THIS WEEK!!! and my husband cooked dinner for his daughter Kelly, her husband and son! He didn't take any photos because of their privacy but you asked me about this in my Q&A and I had never seen or heard of them being here until now ... serendipity or what? My Mom has always been very very aware of her appearance - I think it was her upbringing, there have been lots of bonkers diets, eating just grapefruit .. or cabbage soup. She's far more comfortable in her own skin these days though thankfully!
Fantastic Story Telling of Your Christmas's of your early days Lucy. I share similar recollections. What a Great Exhibition you visited Thanks. Happy Simple Days Merry Christmas To You.
Hello Lucy! Thank you for this video! I really love all your videos, but this one especially warmed my heart. It brought back just how big and important those little things are when you're little, and how those memories seem to be the strongest to this day. You reminded me of when I was in grade 2, and the last day before holidays our teacher had a draw and my name was chosen (!) to get a small box of Pot of Gold chocolates. So so special! I didn't even open them, brought them home and put them in the fridge. Next day, went to the fridge, and found that my older brother had eaten all of them! I was heart broken! It's so funny to me now, in my 40s, but yes, that little box of 6 chocolates meant so much to me! And I also try to remember that when my kiddos are getting so upset about things that seem really small to me. Anyways, happy holidays, and thanks again for your lovely videos!
This is lovely, and you are so right! The small things meant SO MUCH, over here we could get this little Cadbury chocolate dispenser, you had to put 1p in for a little piece of chocolate to come out, my sister had one and she never ate the chocolates - it was too precious! To this day I am still pretty bad at hoarding things I consider "too good" or "for best" - I am trying to get better at actually using lovely things but I think my upbringing where things weren't readily available makes me mindful even to this day!
My husband and raised 4 sons from 1970-1995 in the States. Our Christmas decor was not the gloriously gaudy , tacky and glittery baubles from your memory since I was more of an earth mother hippy Mama. They did enjoy marking up the Sears catalog with their wish list. They got all the cool toys, gadgets, books and clothes from that time period ( the best we could on a moderate income) To this day, they all 4 still lean towards the natural style decor for Christmas with their families. It's wonderful that each of us remembers that feeling of comfort, safety and love no matter in what style. Merry Chrismas Lovely Lucy!
Absolutely! There's no right or wrong, it's about doing what you love and following your traditions. In the UK at the moment there's a big trend for "social media perfect" trees and piles and piles of presents all in matching wrapping .. I don't know if people like this or if they are following the crowd. I love that there was the Sears Catalogue over in the States too - sounds very much like our Argos one here, my sister and I couldn't wait to get our hands on it and circle what we liked!
Perfection in our homes doesnt interest me at all. I can easily pass right by those channels. Christmas should be colorful and joyous! @@throughlucyslens
As a child of the early 1960s, this brought back so many memories. We might not have had as much then as we do now, but the magic was real. As a grandmother myself now, my biggest aim for my granddaughter is to instil in her all the traditions that she will hopefully continue throughout her life and that will evoke special memories every time. Today we've assembled a gingerbread house, made mince pies and decorated the cake. We put our tree up a couple of weeks ago and she did all the placing of the baubles. It might not look very professional, but I'm not going to move a thing, because she had so much fun doing it. Christmas should never be about keeping up with the neighbours or how your photos look on social media. It should be about family, love and laughter and the memories made behind your own front door. Thank you for this video and reminding us not only of the simplicity of christmases past, but the utter joy and magic of the season. Merry Christmas to you.
Thanks for your lovely comment! I agree with you - and I think it's lovely what you have done with your Grandaughter today, we don't have children but I love spending time with my niece and nephew and always do lots of things for them that hopefully they will remember - including a gingerbread house! they love my bright coloured lights too .. a very Merry Christmas to you xx
I’m 48 and listening to you describe your childhood Xmas memories has brought loads flooding back of mine, and you’re so right about the tree going up too early thing, my sisters birthday is on the 9th of December and the family rule was the tree would go up on the weekend after that, anytime before would be considered common, that big glass jar of roses at Xmas really was special, they definitely smell different on first opening in glass than the modern plastic, that jar would somehow last all Xmas with just a hand full of toffee pennies left at the end that no one liked, thanks for a quality piece of work there, it was fantastic ❤
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback, I really appreciate it! It was such a special time and I love to go back there in my head so it was a pleasure to share x
I was born January 1982 in Bromsgrove Worcestershire and remember so many of these things you’ve mentioned in the video. Growing up in our council house it was freezing in the winter, we only had a coal fire for heat in the living room so always remember my dad used to move the settee up closer to the fire while we all snuggled up together and watched the A team and knight rider on tv eating the Roses or quality street. Christmas in the 80s/90s were great and was all about family, we were often the hosts on Boxing Day and all my aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and great grandparents all came for buffet food. Cold turkey sandwiches , sausage rolls , and Trifle dessert is the best !
I dream about cold turkey sandwiches on soft white bread with all the sauces ... almost makes me want to get a turkey again.. I know Bromsgrove well and still go to the high street because it's really dog friendly... You have also reminded me about huddling around the fire, I used to sit so close my face would be bright red!
Hope you had a lovely Christmas. I'm sat with a cup of tea at 04.40hr Boxing Day! I cooked a Turkey crown and it was lovely, really moist. My dear little pooch Ziggy (a la Bowie!) loved it too. Was on my own but my company was fine!
So many things to bring back memories! Lovely video. I too remember stackers crisps, they were lovely, and I too think quite posh! Your anecdote about the roses jar made me laugh..eww 😆 😂
Gosh Lucy, it was a year ago when l discovered your channel, you were at the same place. I just love your channel, listening to your voice as you tell the stories. You've certainly found your talent. Looking forward to more of your videos in 2025. Sending love Perth Western Australia.
Thank you so much! I love it here at Hanbury and like to go every year as there are always subtle changes .. I just love the atmosphere they create too! Thanks for sticking with me all that time, I really do appreciate it ! :)
Hi Lucy, wow what a great video!!! I am 2 decades behind you as I was born in 1951, but I so remember the Jackie magazine and the various games most of which were part of my Christmas, thanks so much for taking the time to post this video, wishing you and you family a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Although I live in Perth, a lot of those items were familiar to me. My daughter grew up in the 80s. By the way, we bought her a Mr Frosty! Christmas is quite different here, of course, as it's hot. Thankfully, this year, the forecast for Christmas Day is not as hot as usual. We always have a cold buffet lunch. Thank you, Lucy, for a year of wonderful nostalgia. Have a very happy Christmas.
You are so welcome! I love to hear about Christmas in Australia - it always blew my mind when I was little that people had BBQS and cold buffets .. have a very Happy Christmas Joan x
Aw. This is a lovely look at this eras Christmasses. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in the era 80s too. North of England.I can relate to a bit of these more middle class memories as we are traditional working class. So a lot of the abundance described we never saw. Loved seeing the film of the items too. It’s good they do this. I never saw an exhibit like this before. As we grow older it’s bound to happen ey
We never had piles of presents like set up at the house either, it's a great place to go on the run up to Christmas because it's just got such a nice atmosphere :)
Loved this video Lucy, reminded me so much of my own childhood at Christmas time. All those annuals, sweets, decorations & memories came flooding back. Thanks for sharing your own happy memories & photos. Love to you & your family this Christmas. X
Making your own memories with your family is beautiful.
Absolutely!
I love this so much Rachel! Christmas to me is about sharing time and making memories - going to the mountains for a feast sounds absolutely perfect!
@@throughlucyslens I can, these are the best memories because they are made with love
I also got a red pram and a babydoll at that age.
That was so interesting thank you for Sharing ❤

Yes the 60s and 70s Christmas 🎄 I remember my Dad holding big family party’s
I was born in 1955. We share so many happy memories.🎉
What a wonderfully nostalgic, brilliant and funny surprise treat, thank you Lucy! And a very Happy Christmas to you!
Aww thank you Anne, I wasn't going to film it as I go every year but it's so great I wanted to share x

Oh and all the 70s and 80s christmas songs 🎵 👌👌 is have them on a playlist on my phone 📱
I was born in 80 so I got 80s kid and 90s teenager - the best of both worlds! I think it's awesome you are doing that for your kids, the traditions are new these days but I always think whatever you do at Christmas makes a life time impression!
Me too!! What is your fave? I love Merry Xmas Everybody and Simply having a Wonderful Christmas time the best .. I think!
The Argos catalogue reference made me smile. We used to turn the corners of the pages over for the stuff we wanted. Drove my dad nuts. 😄
Same!! We spent hours and hours with it -
I bet deep down they liked it though as it kept us quiet!
@@throughlucyslens 😁Plus it made gift buying easy. They just needed to look at the Argos. 😅
@@Sol-Cutta Empire Stores! That brings back memories. 😀
Ha ha you are so right, the little knitted scarecrow, my Mum knitted them for my boys.
This was absolutely lovely 😊 thanks Lucy
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a pleasure to write x
Thank you for remembering the helicopter .... finally proves I am not mad 😂😂😂

So many shared memories. I'm alone now, but I transport myself back to the joy of the late 60's and all of the 70's at Christmas...in my mind and heart. I knew it was something very special even then. Never to be recaptured, but loved with every atom in my mortal body. Boy, in America we put our tree up as soon as possible. Like the day after Thanksgiving. The longer it's up, the more time you have to be in the Christmas spirit! I mean, any chance to be joyful is the way to go. Even more important these days, when joy is truly precious.

I love the HUGE trees you have! I was lucky enough to visit Las Vegas on the run up to Christmas once and oh my
Goodness! Mindblowing!
Wow! What a treat! That multi colored tree was so cool!
I love multi coloured fairy lights, they make me so happy :)
We would go to bed, my parents would pull out and wrap all the presents and arrange them in piles, and then shout upstairs “Father Christmas has been!”
Then all six children would come running down stairs and open our presents.
Great writing and narration! Loved it❤
Thank you so much, and for taking your time to watch x
What a great YT recommendation. Fabulous reminiscing video I was 12yo in 1983, fond, fond memories thank you so much ❤
Thanks for spending your time watching.
Wouldn't it be lovely! Same!! x
Absolutely, I totally agree. Have a very Happy Christmas x
The best day wasn't it? I would LOVE an original wham! T-shirt ... I'd wear it with pride 😂
wonderful, Thanks for sharing your own personal memories, You definitely succeeded in your aim to stir memories of Christmas past for this viewer, both of my own childhood in the 70's and early 80's and those spent with my young family either side of the turn of the millennium. Once again heart felt thanks for this one.
You are very very welcome, it means a lot and I am very privileged to be able to read such kind words - thank you.
I like Christmas Eve, it was always busy but exciting - it was my job to prepare sprouts that would be in cold water over night :)
Everything inspires nostalgia these days. Enjoy it while you can.
As a 70’s baby your memories strongly resonate with mine ❤️.Absolutely beautiful video Lucy, thank you,it made me come over all teary xx
You are so kind, honestly this voice over took me a long time do as I kept getting tearful, many of the people in these memories are no longer here anymore but every year I make Auntie Gills Trifle and put a banner up to remember my Dad and that Christmas he let us go mad ... they are all with us in our hearts x
@@throughlucyslens I can imagine, I seem to miss loved ones even more at Christmas the older I get x
Same ❤️🩹
Lots of familiar items :) thanks for the visit, and Happy Christmas to you and yours 🎄
Have a very Happy Christmas! Thank you for watching ❤️❤️🎄🎄
I absolutely love your videos. This one was particularly special.
Wonderful video . Great nostalgic memories . Xx
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it ❤️🎄
You are speaking my husband's language when it comes to decorating, lol! He's the same generation so this is really right up his alley!
"I dream of sitting on the sofa all day eating undisturbed" ...now you are speaking my language!
I love food all year round but at Christmas .. I love it even more!!! hahaha
I loved this!! Thanks Lucy for sharing your stories. I was 🎄poor as a young child and I still remember having one 2 or 3 gifts and treasuring them and the time I spent with mom handmaking our decorations. The best of times.
Absolutely. It was always the thought that counted for me, kids remember memories not "stuff" I certainly did anyway!
Your memories of Christmas are very similar to my own!
Thanks for sharing!🎄❤️🇨🇦
Very welcome! I had a lovely time making this one. Happy Christmas x
Thank you for this present, Lucy. Such sweet, nostalgic childhood memories you shared with us.
Thanks Maria, I really do enjoy my annual visit to Hanbury, it always stirs so many lovely memories for me! Happy Christmas xx
Hello Lucy, thank you so much for sharing your cozy memories. Your videos are great company for me. I wish you and your channel the best Christmas and New Year.
That's so kind of you - I am happy to be so, wishing you a wonderful Christmas x
Beautiful job bab. Thank you ❤
Very welcome! Loved making it ❤️
This is very intriguing, and totally right up my alley, so I'll watch it a second time later.
I'd like to talk to her.
Hello :) that's so lovely .. glad some of memories have reminded you of some of your own ❤️
Amazing thank you so much for this, appreciate everything you do, have a great Christmas and please keep going in the new year, enjoy every vlog 😊
I will, I am really looking forward to the year ahead! Hope you had a lovely Christmas x
Another amazing video Lucy, it had us both chatting about our christmas pasts. The narration was perfection, really set the scene. I cannot look at a tin of Roses in the same way now though, we were crying with laughter! Merry christmas to you and yours x.
Thank you!!! You know I very rarely have Roses now even to this day .. I'm like Naghr ..
Love to Gundala too x
Hey Lucy, what a fab trip down memory lane, me and my sister had a lot of those toys and games back in the late 60s early 70s. I was always a daydreamer and sat for ages in front of the tree looking at all the pretty coloured lights and imagining all sorts of images the colours cast on the wall behind the tree. Magical!😊 To this very day, my Christmas tree is always a riot of colours! Thankyou for taking us round these interesting old places with you - it’s always a joy. Have a Merry Christmas there and remember to have a watch of Oliver too! 😂
I've already started Oliver 😂 you won't be surprised to hear I was a day dreamer too .. my nickname was "Dolly Day Dream" ❤️
That was a perfect reminder of Christmas past. Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year 🎉
Thank you so much! Have a very happy Christmas and I am glad I had the opportunity to share some memories with you x
Oh Lucy what a wonderful video. Absolutely loved it. You describe everything so well , I just feel I’m there with you. Brought lots of memories back for me. Thanks so much. I wish you a very happy new year 🥳 xxx
Thank you - I absolutely love it there, it makes me so happy and it's a pleasure to share it with you x
Really nice! Thank you. Happy Christmas
Thank you for coming with me. Happy Christmas ❤️
Happy Christmas lovely Lady and thank you. Your amazing🐞
Thank you so much Carole ❤️
Strange revisiting Christmas of my childhood and the gifts. The yearly circling of the argos catalogue. 😂
Yeah we all miss good ole woolworths.
Hope you have a fantastic Christmas Lucy and happy new year 🎉
Happy Christmas Stephen, I miss the Argos catalogue ... kids are missing out on that (although i am told Smyths toys does one 😂)
The Jackie annual, fabulous. Great video Lucy, lovely to see your family photos. I've tried pheasant, not my thing either. You've made me so nostalgic, I'm going to make a cheese and pickled onion porcupine .
I wish I could have found more, they have all vanished over the years! There's so much there to look at ❤️
Happy Christmas! Love to you and Rupert, have a great day and thanks for the videos! X 🎄🐶
Thanks Donna, hope you had a lovely Christmas x
My head is so far removed from all things "christmas" this year, but the simple memories here in your video were lovely. A lot of work went into this video.
Thank you! It was very emotional and almost cathartic for me to do it, I'm
So pleased how well received it's been x
Helen x
Happy tears I hope!! Yes do go over to Hanbury one year when they do the Christmas event because it is really brilliant - and so lovely! x
For the past 2 years my wife has allowed me to fill our front room with the old lovely foil decorations. Being born in ‘79 they’re what stood out to me as a child. Heidi let me get a few last year, this year I went 10 fold 😂
Seeing the old board games on here evoked memories, battle ship, game of life, I remember the adverts for them. And when you said circling things in the Argos catalogue, me and my brother did that but also ripped the pages out so they were easy to find the items again…. Mum wasn’t so pleased at that 😂
We always used to get a tub of flumps too 😂
Thank you Lucy, Merry Christmas 🎄
I like this .. ripping the pages out seems a good system to me! I decorate my house as if Slade are coming round any minute with Roy Wood to do a show - I love it - pure dopamine and we need it in the darkness of winter!
Hi Lucy, You may have been disappointed with Mr Frostie. I really wanted one, and when I managed to get one, I realised how badly made it was. The ice just would not crush, which defeats the object entirely! I think this was a blessing in disguise for you! 😂
I really love these Christmas videos you have posted recently.
I think that sounds like a beautiful idea! I love getting cozy with a good book xx
A very Merry Christmas to you. Precious memories are free but priceless I agree xx
And yes! We had onion and cucumber in malt vinegar!
The best!
@throughlucyslens hope you and yours have a fantastic Christmas! Keep away from the chocolates haha x
...
I can't keep my hands off the mince pies though 😂
Loved this! I can relate to everything. I was born in 69’ so that was a trip down memory lane xx
I had such a lovely time making it and glad you can relate! Happy Christmas xx
Lucy, loved this one! Merry Christmas from the Commonwealth of Virginia to you, your family, and all the Through Lucy's Lens family!! Oh, and Rupert too! 🎄🎄🎄
A very Merry Christmas to you and your family! x
Lovely video, Lucy. I think you've got nostalgia down to a tee :)
Thank you, I just really LOVE IT so it certainly helps x
Have a lovely rest of your week, hopefully Mr Frosty will be on sale or “offer” and you can treat your loved ones to snow cones on Boxing Day! ox💕🇺🇸
PS…..Ask your Mum, did she ever want to look like Twiggy?
Those were gorgeous displays. You look terrific in that electric pink outfit. Energizing ❤
Thank you! I love that coat! Hanbury seems the best place to wear it :)
Fantastic Story Telling of Your Christmas's of your early days Lucy. I share similar recollections. What a Great Exhibition you visited Thanks.
Happy Simple Days
Merry Christmas To You.
A very Merry Christmas to you Rosa, wonderful memories xx
Can't beat the eighties so many memories,,🎉🎉🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁
I totally agree, very happy times for me x
Thankyou for sharing really made me smile. Christmas was so magical back then 🎉. Happy Christmas 😊
Absolutely! I do everything I can to bring that feeling back x
Excellent Lucy ,Thanks,
Thank you Michele, you are very welcome x
Mmm that sounds lovely! I just went to my aunts and had left over turkey and salads - absolutely delicious! ❤️
So many things to bring back memories! Lovely video. I too remember stackers crisps, they were lovely, and I too think quite posh! Your anecdote about the roses jar made me laugh..eww 😆 😂
Honestly I'll never live ruining those roses down 😂😂😂
@throughlucyslens at least it was contained in the jar 🤣
I know! I did them a favour didn't I? 😂
@@throughlucyslens absolutely! Lol x
Have a very happy Christmas! It's a great place isn't it? A real gem! Glad it sparked some happy memories for you x
That was lovely.Merry Christmas 🥰🎄🥰🎄🥰🎄
Many Thanks and Happy Christmas to you too xx
Lots of love Susan, have a very Happy Christmas x
So love your videos! So fascinated by social history
Thank you! It's so lovely to connect with people who like the same things as me :)
