This song has always made me feel glad to be alive - every single time I hear it without fail it makes me feel happy - And I've been listening to it off & on for thirty years
I woke up so far away from a Chelsea mornin’ but this song was in my head when I opened my eyes. ☀️ It’s a grey, overcast day. No sun show at all, and that’s usual for living on the Pacific Coast amongst the redwood trees. The rest of the world is in a heat wave today. I’m going to stay, put on the day (high today is 63F) and wear it til the night comes! 😊
We all are amazed with her songwriting and what an expressive singer she is, but her guitar playing is astonishing. I really enjoy the little extra guitar ending in this version. Joni Mitchell is the highest-ranked woman on the Rolling Stone's list of the best guitarists of all time (she's #72), but really... she is a fantastic guitarist.
I love this so much. I saw the complete show a while back on the BBC late one night. In the show Joni said she was suffering from a cold, and yet her voice is a pure and sweet as it ever was.
I love this ! Joni Mitchell wrote the words & music for this song. In other words~ This song did not exist before Joni wrote it. That said, ~Yes, Judy Collins did cover it very well, ...& made it a hit when Joni was not well-known yet. Thanks to Judy for her help. Judy chose a great song to cover ! I love to listen to & watch Joni sing her songs, because the the emotion and expression falls clearly into place. Doesn't completely happen when someone does a cover.
Great song writtten by Joni Mitchell. Judy Collins' versions are totally different. I like both. Well, Bill & Hillary Clinton named their daughter "Chelsea" with Judy's version in mind. The version which reached the charts, neither the live nor the recent ones. Great thanks !
Judy released it as a single 1969, and her version charted, and received a good deal of airplay; Joni did not release her version as a single, it was a track on her CLOUDS album, also from 1969. Both version are fabulous and well remembered.
Check out Chelsea Hotel on Wikipedia some time, in the Chelsea neigborhood of NYC. Its was a virtual hive of creativity in the 50s 60s and probably still is to some degree. :)
Judy Collins stole this song and now all of a sudden we have Joni singing a version of it! lol Anyways its great that you posted this brilliant vie. Thanks.
henhenstoll--Thanks for this live performance of Joni. This is now the 4th version of her performing Chelsea Norning and she is like Beethoven, Brahms, Gershwin, Miles, Diz, or Thelonius--every performance reflects the Joni of its time, which begs the question: At which time was this BBC recording made--if you know? Also if you know, are recordings of this concert for sale and where might they be obtained? Thanks so much for sharing this fine sparkling jewel with the world.
@billyguns2 Well said! I was going to say the same thing about the Judy/Joni connection. I never really got into Laura Nyro, only because I didn't have anyone else who was into her. I've read, though, that Judy Collins treated Joni somewhat badly and didn't show her much respect. That's amazing considering Joni's songs were Judy's ATM for many years. Joni and Dylan are my two biggest lyrical influences.
Yes, Joni Mitchell wrote many many songs covered by other artists. Judy Collins covered Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now. Laura Nyro was equal to Joni in songwriting, but again HER songs were made hits by others. Laura's songs included: And When I Die, Stoney End, Flim Flam Man, and many others. Streisand's Stoney End album included a number of Laura Nyro songs. James Taylor also did covers of many Joni Mitchell songs. Judy Collins, Joni, Nyro, Taylor were all friends, so were happy to share.
Well, technically henhenstoll is correct. Here is Joni performing Judy Collins' hit. But jeez, who cares? Joni wrote it, made the best recording of it, and in this performance OWNS the darn thing.
@billyguns2 yeah..even Neil Diamond did a version of it..not bad, either...but NO ONE will ever do it justice like the one who conceived it...Joni herself :)
If Judy Collins COULD write like this then she would be someone else. I love both these women but as a song writer there is no equal to Joni. Wait.. there is... Laura Nyro!
Compared to Joni's version, Judy Collins's version sounds stiff and formal. I liked Judy when I was young, but Joni replaced her in my affections pretty quickly in the 1960's.
@billyguns2 AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!!! My ultimate pet peeve is ignorant jerks who always know who did the covers but never know or give a damn about the poets who wrote them!!! Like jerks that yell 'Waylon' when Billy Joe Shaver sings HIS OWN SONGS. It's the height & depth of ignorance!!!!! I like Judy Collins a lot too & she has written some good songs BUT SHE DIDN'T WRITE THIS ONE!!!!
Very nice. An excellent songwriter....but -- she gave up her baby? There's a coldness to the personality that can do that sort of thing, to put her own career over her unplanned pregnancy. A Chelsea morning in NYC, people...read the bio. A shout out to Nancy James for bringing up Laura Nyro.
I just shake my head in awe at the lyrics. "Won't you stay, and put on the day, and we'll wear it 'til the night comes." Amazing way to phrase it.
Yes!
This song has always made me feel glad to be alive - every single time I hear it without fail it makes me feel happy - And I've been listening to it off & on for thirty years
Me too

I 1st heard this, I think in 1970- I have always loved its bouncy positivity.

What a ray of sunshine! 🌻
Joni Mitchell is so talented. Her songs really get to you.
I love this so much. I saw the complete show a while back on the BBC late one night. In the show Joni said she was suffering from a cold, and yet her voice is a pure and sweet as it ever was.
One of my favs (there are so many Joni favs!!). Joni is beautiful in this fine vidoe. Thank you.
Carey, Ladies of the Canyon❤
What an intimate concert. How fortunate to see a brilliant performer so close up. Pure, magical singing.
What joy to be alive
1st Joni song I ever heard
Joni certainly lives in the present. What a gift! ❤️🎶❤️🎵
I just flew in yesterday from Madrid and american airlines plays this song while you're waiting to exit the plane. Pretty cool after a 10 hour flight.
I love this !

What a GREAT clip - thanks!!!

a sonorous ballad of light
Sergio Mendes, and Lani Hall sung also this song, in the grioup Sergio Mendes and his Brasil 66.

@billyguns2 ===> Judy Collins also had a hit with "Both Sides Now"; another Joni song.

She was such a peach in the day!
Divine
This song makes me think of a girl that I fell in love with named Chelsea. Not that she could ever love me too.

Crystal beads to beckon.... there's a slide show every second.....
Judy Collins might have had the "Hit" with this but Joni Mitchell was the composer & original artist.
Well, technically henhenstoll is correct. Here is Joni performing Judy Collins' hit. But jeez, who cares? Joni wrote it, made the best recording of it, and in this performance OWNS the darn thing.
Welcome to the new world
@billyguns2 Thank You!
Question: Isn't this song about a hotel in London. In Chelsea?
That's the story I heard.
@billyguns2 yeah..even Neil Diamond did a version of it..not bad, either...but NO ONE will ever do it justice like the one who conceived it...Joni herself :)
The Clintons were fans of Judy Collins' version of the song; Judy performed it at Prez Clinton's 1993 Inauguration.
Chelsea NYC, not Chelsea GB.
again
listen
nobody writes lyrics like that......
If Judy Collins COULD write like this then she would be someone else. I love both these women but as a song writer there is no equal to Joni. Wait.. there is... Laura Nyro!
President Bill and Hilary Clinton named there daughter Chelsea after this song..nice
This is Joni's song not Judy's!!! FIX THAT!
And then she got even better
Compared to Joni's version, Judy Collins's version sounds stiff and formal. I liked Judy when I was young, but Joni replaced her in my affections pretty quickly in the 1960's.
And God Himself told the traffic what to sing.
