It's for punching power. When you make that sound or exhale while punching, you crank up more power. Try holding your breath while punching, and you won't genetate much oower. I used to wonder this also until my boxing coach told me this back in 2003. He told me to make that sound while punching. I always noticed a difference.

Power / focus / Rhythm are the resulting benefit, not the direct benefit of that exhaling sound.
