    This was super great timing. I've been working on my own skirmish game for about a month or two now. It was nice to hear some of the things I've been doing on the list. Also, just hearing you talk about the process helped me to decide on a few things I was waffling about. Thanks a bunch. I hope your new book does even better than Weekend Warriors.

    What a great video about creating something fun that you're passionate about. There's no better feeling! I'm not making a skirmish game but rather making an RPG and I agree on all the points you bring up! I certainly tend to get lost in worldbuilding too...

    Thanks for the advice. I began making a TT Skirmish game based off my Diesel Punk/fantasy setting and novel series The Angaran Chronicles. It has a huge emphasis on character creation and can have anything from a two elite teams of five battling it out to 30-40 horde dudes blasting at each other with sub machine guns. It's rules took a lot of inspiration from WarCry but without random deployment etc. It's a ton of fun to test play and my friends rally enjoyed it. My friend who had never played a TT Skirmish game in his life had it down patt by our 2nd game and he won which I was happy about. Finding it a bit hard to balance, though lol gotta get back into writing it (all the rules are in my head) and play testing it again sooner or later.

    Amazing! Hope you keep exploring and adding more videos on this topic. Related to reading materials do you (or anyone around here) know of any 'skirmish' games that would focus more on a feeling of exploration/discovery than necessarily combat? Skirmish is tied close with the idea of combat so perhaps I am limiting myself on the search but any advice is welcomed :) I am trying to create a small number of miniatures game that would rely more on the exploration side (the theme lends better to it) but on the other hand I don't want it to turn into a boardgame, I want it to still feel like a miniatures game if that makes sense. Anyway, keep it up man, love your stuff!

      I'll be adding lots more for sure. I'm currently working on my Zombie survival game, Escape From Huntsville: Population Z. This skirmish game will focus on searching, being sneaky, and building up the strength of a group over campaigns, so you might like it.
      Another game to try out is Core Space. This is a brilliant game where you are on the hunt for gear to sell and trade, and although there is a lot of fighting too, you can choose to retreat and focus on gathering items and keeping your crew together. The terrain is included that can be built in a load of ways, and it's a fun concept. I've covered it on the channel and there is a how to play playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLkngNwixBwSML24kU1YIjhrSTYHRYUmK7
      Unboxing of the main Core Space game here: ruclips.net/video/d9XnE2M7B44/видео.html I think you'll love this game!

    I'm looking into writing my own wargame. I'm thinking a light hearted parody of 80s horror movies. Each faction being based off a group from an 80s sci-fi horror fighting over small town America or a summer camp.

    What would you see as the difference (if any) between a skirmish level combat game and a combat system for an RPG? I certainly saw 4e D&D as more skirmish game than an RPG.

    • @tabletopskirmishgames
      @tabletopskirmishgames 2 года назад +1

      I learned D&D with 4e and we would play it as a family going from one combat to the next with not much in-between. I'm adapting an RPG ruleset I wrote to a skirmish game and there isn't much I need to change, so I would say there isn't much of a difference where the combat and encounter design is concerned. The combat time from a D&D game might even come close to a skirmish game duration if you add it all up.
      I was talking with my boy the other day about whether or not D&D can be thought of as a skirmish game, and we think it can. I've even considering making some RPG content for the channel too. I definitely do see an overlap of the two, especially how we play RPGs. When we play skirmish games, we will talk about what are characters are going to do and then roll, so there's a big similarity there.

    • @earnestwanderer2471
      @earnestwanderer2471 2 года назад +1

      The only thing I can see, is that a skirmish game may attempt to have a “tighter” rule system than an RPG. Certainly D&D 4e tried to limit the DM influence in combat. Kill Team has tried to limit the subjective rules interpretation to create a game that works well in a competitive situation. That’s probably a design concept that needs to be considered early. Does the game support two (or more) strangers sitting down to play in a tournament setting? Or is it more for friends to play in a more cooperative fashion.
