The lecturer argues that the evidence provided in the reading passage is not convincing. He explains that it might be true that the portrait is connected to the family but it is hard to prove Jane Austen as a teenager.
This refutes the reading passage’s claim that there are good reasons to believe that she is the subject of the painting even though the painting is not titled Jane Austen.
First, the lecturer claims that Jane Austen has been dead for 70 years which actually makes her family members not actually see her.
This counters the reading passage’s claim that Austen’s family was able to recognize it as a portrait of the author since Austin’s family gave permission to use the portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letters.
Second, the lecturer asserts that Jane Austen’s family was an extended family and she had a lot of cousins and relatives. The professor further explains that this portrait was Jane Auten’s niece Marian Campaign not Jane Austen.
This contradicts the reading passages claim that the defined details of the face portrait, the one in Cassandra’s sketch, clearly resembles Jane Austen’s face.
Lastly, the lecture mentions that the painter mentioned in the reading, who was a society portrait painter who was hired by Jane’s family, only sold the paintings when the girl was older than Jane Austen.
This refutes the reading passage’s claim that there is evidence that it was painted when Austen was a teenager although the painting is unsigned and undated.
These are 3 specific reasons why the lecturer disagrees with the evidence on the reading article provided.
