So they gave their client a business to run, a location to rent and brand image to use. It's like, i am the owner of a famous grocery shop, i have land and i invite people to run a chain of my shop, which will be rented on my land and run by my trained professionals... I think McDonald's is not in the real estate business... They are running an investment banking business for people who have money to spare and not know how to make profit from it.
Franchising is a big industry now. All the major gas station chains do it, as well as most fast food places. Even some chain stores do it. It is the reverse of adverstising. In ads, I pay you to show off my product to your audience. In franchising, you pay me to show off my product to your audience.
