About how defenders some times leave Messi wide open, there are two problems with marking him. 1.) It has to be a team effort. Because "When Messi has the ball, 1-on-1, you are dead". 2.) Messi is also the best playmaker in the world, so he will fall back to midfield a lot which puts the defenders in a big dilemma. Follow Messi down there? Or stay in your backlin? If they follow him, that will open up space behind them that he will exploit to create chances for his teammate. Stay behind and they give him that space you were talking about. Pick your poison.
