i need to say, I’m really glad i got to hear your opinion on the Mists of Pandaria expansion. I genuinely feel like its one of my favorite expansions in WoW, and my RP character has retired to a farm there. It definitely had its problems, like the massive amount of daily quests being the only way to gain Reputation with most factions, but it has such a cozy vibe to it, that it stays in my thoughts always. MUCH better than Warlords of Draenor.

i cant agree more with this. the draenor storyline got tiring after a while for me and while i do really enjoy the environments there and in many other expansions pandaria is definitely my favourite besides dragonflight. it has some of my favourite mounts and armour aesthetics and the general art direction was very well done imo. like maybe i dont have the same experience as someone whose played WoW for longer since i only got into it thru the dragonflight expansion(hence my love for it) but i think during my time learning the game once i started exploring the other expansions pandaria was the one to really capture my heart the most despite its flaws

You can notice which MMOs you have and haven't played, but to be fair, this list will ALWAYS be super subjective! I'd rank 2014 a lot higher as many had the high hopes of WIldstar reviving oldschool MMORPG difficulty, combined with modern sensibilities. And then 2015 showed us that this wouldn't happen. The release of Ragnarök Online was also a HUGE deal for many, as that was the first grind MMO that became a hit in many EU countries. But alas, everyone's experience is different.

    • @jackalo34

I am super sad you not only missed the release of WILD STAR, but also the tragic slow fall of Wild Star. From its release as a subscription game, to it trying to go free to play but not turning a profit. It was a hard-core oriented MMO and it ate up a metric ton of my time. It had some of the best action combat I'd ever see in an MMO with BEAUTIFUL animations.
And it didn't even show up on the list :(
Also no eve online mention blows my mind, since it was and is still making history. Down the rabbit hole just released a whole history about it! And it's about to get a first-person shooter game mode aside from its usually ship-based exploration game mode. And all the real life money that is involved with the game... You missed a lot of good MMOs that had a good shelf life.

Giving 2020/2021 the lowest score is bonkers, the player count and cash flow is what paid for 2022 and will be seen as a reset. BDO did seasons in 2020, osrs/rs3 player count skyrocketed ect.

Dark Age of Camelot is probably to this day my favorite MMO. The 3 Faction Realm vs Realm PvP was by far the best iteration of a MMO world PvP to ever come out in my opinion. Also the fact that every faction had their own classes made it super in depth so you had to know what to expect from each faction and they would fight very differently. Even just leveling characters on each faction was an insanely different experience so it was nearly 3 different games in one.

I got pretty into MOP and shortly after me joining Warlords of Draenor came out, which to most people is like the worst one by far but I enjoyed it because i didnt have anything to compare it too. Plus, all i really did was pet/transmog hunt anyway so I thought stuff like running old content for pets and exploring areas like timeless isles was super fun. In fact being able to solo old content was only made possible by future expansions so i appreciated the ridiculous power creep lol. But for people trying to raid or experience the highs of playing with friends in Wrath of lich king i understand why so much of the future xpacs fell short.

I started up again during Warlords cuz i had a friend who was looking to get the recruit a friend mount, so I started playing again. I wasn’t able to do any serious raiding (or even casual, really) since i was recruited onto the European servers, even though i was american. i didn’t hit max level for like. 3 months after i used my level 90 boost, because i spent most of the time going through old content seeing what i had missed. I thought it was a great expansion, but i see what flaws there were. I did eventually switch over to the NA servers when i met my (now ex) girlfriend. I still look fondly at WoD though. but at the same time as soon as Outland was relesed the whole Classic raids and dungeon was over (and no mounts will not help) because player that did not get a chance to do the raids back then will not get to run them, Player LFG a raid whit level 58-60 apropiered gear gets into the raid raid is full of level 70 player whit level 70 gear all out for the mount.
they take one look the players gear and kicks them. that or they just blitz the raid so that the player don´t get the chance to experience as intended.
I know that happen in Wrath I was a bit late whit hitting the level cap and so when I was doing one of the Dungeon one of my quest you get this quest one time per char and is the reason why the player would enter it (think the kill van clief quest at the end of the westfall quest chain. So what happen was I joined released the first 3 prisoners I saw said I need X more can you guys wait will I get them, they ignored me and ran to the first boss and then kicked me for not been at the boss. I joined a secound group that when I said I had not been here before and I had thoes quest here (none daily) they said okey and helped me do them even if it cost the rest of the dungeon group another 10-15 min for me to do it.

Not mentioning Final Fantasy XI in 2002 is weird, as it was the very first multi platform MMORPG where console players and PC players were together, and also the game that generated more revenue in the series until of course Final Fantasy XIV.

When people say "MMOs are dying" What they mean is the only ones still around are either Korean P2W shit, or a couple old ones from close to two decades ago, with the only new ones coming up in maybe a few years time being even more P2W crap, or some kickctsrter pipe dreams destined to die a few months after launch.

Great tier list, only ones I would disagree on are 2019 and 2023 being S. 2019 offered nothing new to the genre like the other S Years did, likewise with 2023 because the momentum didn't continue. At least that's how I see it with an extra year of hindsight.
Do you still see it this way a year later?

I'd like to comment about the transition from WOTLK to Cataclysm in WoW. It is widely regarded that Cata wasn't great because it changed everything about the game. This is not necessarily untrue with the changes to the world/questing/gear etc. But when it comes to being a completely different game, that actually happened in TBC and WOTLK together. The relaunching of classic World of Warcraft along with its expansions has shown our memories had flaws even at the time it was active. WOTLK was such a big deal because it was the culmination of all of the Warcraft games, and 2 WoW expansions of story. It was a big deal because we were finally dealing with Arthas, but not because it still played the same. If you look at the way the game plays in classic, then to TBC, then to WOTLK, you'll see how it's not at all the same game anymore. Ratings replaced %'s, old gear was quickly outmoded, gear became more standardized etc. And that's not to say that it was bad so to speak. It was just different, and some people didn't mind it, some did. Those that did, quit and came back for WoW Classic, as I'm sure a bunch of people came back for OS RS. And those that didn't quit often went on to play other MMO's like FF and the newer MMO's.
The rest is only if you give even a single shit about WoW, I just went overboard about this because WoW's history is extremely fascinating when everything is taken into account from a player perspective as well as an observer perspective.
My brother and I think of it like this, classic Wow leaned HEAVILY on the RPG aspect, because they didn't originally plan for millions of people to be playing, it was an RPG that was also MMO. TBC was when they finished everything they WANTED to include in classic, but weren't able to for one reason or another, so it was still designed in the classic way, but was rushed and some things were scaled back, cut out, and changed. Then WOTLK comes along, and it's now a full modern MMO, (some of this stuff was a change made in TBC, but TBC is the halfway point between classic and a 20-teens MMO) you'll never use any gear from classic here, arena ratings are the big thing for PvP, as well as honor for battleground's, crit and hit are ratings now, catch-up mechanics (Heirloom gear), in the pre-patch for Cata they added store mounts, each raid tier now systematically replaces all your prior gear, instead of some of your BIS gear being from the 1st tier raid of the xpac, achievements creating more gatekeeping through titles and prior raid or dungeon completion, gear score started becoming a thing, DPS meters, Flying mounts (yes I know what I said and I stand by it that flying mounts killed the magic and social interactions in the game), and more.
I also don't think expansion were inherently bad for WoW, but how they tackled them was. Level cap didn't need to go up, gear could have been better in line with classic content. If at lvl 40 you got to decide whether or not you stay in classic, or go through the dark portal to start helping out out there, or hop on a boat to Northrend (which I would put in Theramore not Stormwind, and a zeppelin from Grom'Gol in STV for Horde) to start tackling the lich king and his army. You could make all the raids in line with their priors, don't move Naxxramas to Northrend, open Ahn'Kahet as an underground zone with 2 dungeons and a raid to replace Naxx. Each one could have it's own type of special thing for it. Maybe warriors armor in WOTLK gives lifesteal, maybe TBC gear gives armor pen, and classic gear gives crit or something. Idk how you'd actually break it down for balance purposes but I think that get's the idea across.

No love for Asheron's Call 😢 my first MMO and still one of the best ever. It was scheduled to be released before EverQuest and got delayed. I believe if it did release before it would have been bigger. The pvp was top notch, questing and exploration was crazy as it was (and still to this day) one of the biggest maps/worlds ever made.

I got City of Heroes in 2004. I didn't get WoW until 2005. So I always associate 2004 with CoH more than WoW. And even when I did get WoW, I always preferred CoH. Maybe I'm just weird? idk.
EDIT: CoH came out in April of 2004. WoW came out in November of 2004. My B-day is in July and the only time I got a game from my grandparents. So I picked CoH in 2004 and then WoW in 2005.
