Oh Lisa, this is a mistake that happened during my journey to Colorado for sheep shearing. The rug video and etc somehow disappeared. I was quite disappointed but yes, I will share the carding information when I continue making the wool process. Tonight I hope, the sheep shearing video should be out. Then I start the wool cleaning video in a few days, then the wool washing. After that, I will have a video on the Carding brushes and also will give you information where the Dine' people get their Carding brushes from. It will surprise you. And you may live nearer to that place than the Navajo Reservation. So if you don't mind, it is coming up and I am going to make sure of that. I just want to make sure too that this wool processing is done in order so that whoever wants to learn can relearn this and its history as well as to how grandma learned firsthand. Thank you for desiring to know the information. I love you Lisa, pretty girl. Bless your dear mother. Tell her the video is coming up unless you need to know sooner, I will tell you. Welcome Melissa, thank you for taking the time to watch Navajo Grandma's video. Working with any type of wool is always fascinating to me. I know during the stock reduction the anglos tried pushing the rubidoux sheep trying to get rid of the Churro saying they were a filthy sheep and low grade etc. But then Colier an agent for the Gov't found that the Navajo (Dine') women preferred and loved the Churro wool and that they loved its manageability thus they were ale to keep the churro sheep and sought out to this day. My Nali (paternal grandfather had thousands until the stock reduction wherein, the white folks declared too many sheep for a Navajo house hold and that they carted off thousands of the Navajo's sheep and left each household 4 sheep. Horrific. They did the same to all the cattle, goats and horses these Navajo's owned. But the eventual sheep remained is the Churro and thus that is the type of wool Ii love working with. To me its perfect as I shear and work the wool thru all the processes. I am not a weaver by any means. I dabble but it is not a strength. I can shear, skirt, wash, clean, card and spin and make them into skeins, so I really feel sad my skills in weaving are pretty null & void. I can put up a loom, and do simple weaving but no exotic in nature, I guess my hands were never washed in spider webbing. I still have yet to have this done. A prayer goes along with this washing. There are women who have done t his and became great weavers in this modern time. Sorry for such a long comment. Navajo Grandma

Other countries know exactly whats going on here and we are here to wake up, stop dependency, stand up for what is right, our families and our land, our flag and freedoms. These are God given rights. So hold on to your seat, maybe during these hard times you will appreciate grandma's teachings. As thru gov't control they will take away your electricity, water, food to control you. Well thank you a b, my brother in law made this loom for me and my friend help me start the weaving. It has mainly become a decor for weaving which is wonderful to have and to use as an example. I am going to hire a woman and her sister to teach me from scratch. It is quite a process. I will need to go find a spider web and wash my hand in it with a sacred prayer so I can really be a weaver. I cried sometimes wishing my Bizhi would have done this for me as I was only watching her weave and I had a hand at it but she was so busy earning money for food etc., that it wasn't time for me to learn every aspect of weaving. I tremendously admire those grandma's and mothers who have taken the time to teach this dying art. We only had one weaver left in our Paternal and Maternal direct line generation and they both passed away. Thus I feel like it is up to me now. That is a calling for sure. Thanks for your interest. @@NavajoGrandma You might be thinking about a tallit? They're usually mostly white with dark blue stripes but they can be any color combination, it's the shape (rectangle) that matters (they have special fringes at the ends.) They're for prayer! They're also worn during weddings. Traditionally, mostly a male thing, I think, but that's changed over the years. I haven't woven any yet because none of the looms I have are big enough but when I finally get a floor loom, I plan on making one for myself.
All Jewish garments that are rectangular have to have these tassles at the four corners, tzitzit. Traditionally, they were dyed blue using tekehelet, a dye that declined and was lost around 500 AD, but has been recently been rediscovered to come from a form of sea snail. Since the loss of the knowledge, most people just use white, even after the rediscovery since general adoption of anything in Judaism tends to be pretty slow.
Also, you don't sound dumb at all! I love talking about this stuff so much.

I am so happy to take you all along with me on a field trip to Colorado where you all will meet the owners of this sheep ranch. I have never met them before but have purchased wool from them. The owner made me laugh and said today, "I have never gotten excited about sheep shearing until I talk to you. I just get so excited and want to shear sheep because of what you tell me and I can't wait to meet you." Of course, he uses electric shears, I was taught with manual shears. You will see. Fun.

Dear Angelina from Sweden. Grandma loves you all. I love your beautiful handcrafts, for they are so beautiful and have deep earthy colors, I have had adopted grandparents who were from Sweden. I learned so much from them. They all had absolutely white hair and the bluest eyes. When I went to Japan, I became friends with a girl from Sweden who was a model. When we would ride the trains the Japanese people would snip her hair and one time her waist length hair was shoulder length by the time we got to Tokyo where she was modeling. It was shocking as the trains were so tight with people that there is movement that you don't realize even if someone would be picking your pocket. She made tons of money and we use to travel all over together until she and I had to go our separate ways. I had her name and magazines but no longer. Just precious memories. I guess I tell you this because I want to feel close to all of you even there in Sweden. Good people I have met. Hugs always from so far away but my words do hug you, I hope you know. Love you. Well I am not to take all the credit, thank my Nali and Bizhi. They and my parents taught me all I know and its their personality you see not mine. I was just taught and absorbed more than I realized. It was the way of the Navajo's long ago to give the grandchildren to the elders to be raised by them while the parents worked the fields. What outstanding wisdom long gone. Of course it was a grandpa and grandma who taught the little ones. Sad. Glad I was given to my grandparents at 18 months. My grandma Bizhi suckled me and I know she is so much more of my mother than my own mother was but I still had that bonding with my mom that never left me. Too much information right? Grandma

Happy New Year Rebecca. Thank you for your wonderful comment. I love that you have learned or taught yourself how to knit. That is wonderful and so lovely. What a wonderful soul you are to learn and explore new talents. Yes I wanted to learn to weave myself. I was little and always helped gather the herbs and plants to dye the wool that was carded. Then I spun the wool for grandma and she was always so proud of me. That was the extent of the process I learned and helped with Shi Bizhi. All way from shearing till the wool was dyed and out on the sage brushes drying, then carding the rolags for the spinning and finally the end result of yarn for the weaving. My Bizhi put up the loom and I just watched and amazed by her patience in putting up a loom. It is work I tell you as her loom was about the size of a queen bed spread. Huge as far as I am concerned. So my goal is also one day to learn how to weave actually weave as my grandmother did. Thank you for this wonderful comment. Hugs from Navajo Grandma

Its just beautiful to have watched my Bizhi explain the blue sky, mother earth, the rain, lightening, the female and male parts of a loom when she was putting a loom together. Then the sheep, goats, dogs, cats, chickens. I believe the law that says, if you own them, "take care of them." It really is up to all of us as owners. Even the horses that are running wild. Inoculate them, spay them, whatever it takes to expend the money we need because we want them, therefore, we have decided to care for them. Period. That is my wisdom on the fact. 10/4. Favorites to do is baby bibs that say "Future Pow wow Dancer " etc. My daughter is left-handed but wants to learn, if she ever gets the time, I hope to teach her and later the girls as well.I do my own designs on the baby bibs, Hasn't tried on anything larger yet. I started out embroidering but I have to say that Counted Cross stitching is a passion. When I am not fishing or spending time with t he grandbabies :) Love your videos and I've learned a great deal. I do have a question on your loom work, has anyone who don't know the other is doing, come up with the same or very similar patterns ?

Well what a wonderful hobby and they sound so precious. I am happy to hear you are spending good quality constructive time and not just getting old like grandma. I have friends who lived up to 107 years and all by keeping busy and being wonderful. They were some of my teachers in life. Love them and miss their wisdom. I was like a teenager when I was around them and they always made me swear I would never grow old. Trying to keep my promise. Ha. Navajo Grandma

What type of string/rope do you use for the Navajo bun , and how long should it be ?

    • @NavajoGrandma
      @NavajoGrandma  3 года назад +1

As Dine' we use the hand spun yarn from the sheep wool. But, you can get regular yarn from the store, it needs to be white. The length is the breadth of both your arms extended outward. The number of strings depends upon how thick your hair is or if you like a thick strand then its up to you. Its best if its a little thinner so you can handle it and tie it. Be sure to tie a knot at about 1 inch before the end of the strings. Hope you understand. Navajo Grandma

I love you Grandma, Your Empathy is powerful. Because when you care about another entity, be it a tree a stone Father Sky, The Earth Mother, ect. They all care back. When you wish something if you don't tell yourself afterwards that it can't happen.
    It will sooner or later.
The Druids are also followers of the wheel of the four directions. Children of the Earth Mother. The most advanced people on Earth. The Roman's figured out that as long as the Celts had Druids they could never beat them. The Druids were smarter than the Romans, but their king wasn't. The Roman's spit poison on the Druids, so
    People lost faith in them.
In 57 AD The Romans murdered all the Druids on Ynnys Mon "the isle of Mother."
And holy head. 22 years later Mt. Vesuvius
let the Roman's know how she felt about that. She incinerated Pompei and Herculaneum. Why 22 years later. Thats how the Earth mother let them where they stored 2, for 2. When you destroy the children of the Earth Mother you curse yourself.
So as you can see your Empathy is very powerful.

What a beautiful rendition of history, so spot on and yes, some of this grandma knows and how beautiful. There is so much that we miss and don't try to understand about history and not repeating it and what God turns back on us as we do ungodly deeds. Truth is truth is what grandma says. You can't run from it, as it is a testimony of God and goodness if trifled with can come back deadly. Empathy is powerful and it is that Godly understanding that brings peace and toggles the world to move forward in empathy, love, understanding and happiness more fluidly and without hampering life.
I love your mind and spirit. Navajo Grandma
