I saw some people not happy that they make Harold some awkward adult instead of a 4 year old like he is in the book. The books were about the imagination of a small child, this however is just weird.

The problem is the IP is so old that mostly Gen X and some niche millennials know about the series. You'd think they'd try and revitalize the tv series(last instance being in 2001) before pushing a movie of a series that hasn't been relevant in over 50+ years. They don't even push the kids book anymore as far as I know as it wasn't even on my radar to get for my son.

    • @Chiwowza

It reminds me of how the 2006 Curious George movie took a book series from the 40s and made an entire new franchise from it because they were actually earnest about adapting it. Ironic since the 2D animation here looks heavily inspired by it

1:09 Well I've seen back then when they showed a “Harold and the Purple Crayon” just given their show on HBO Family. It was a pretty creative kids' show and have Philly Collins singing throughout the episode and Sharon Stone narrated Harold's misadventures of being a purple art imagination.
But this one….yup how the hell Sony making this new version of Harold. Oh boy, it will “The Smurfs” all over again.

I don't see even fans of the original IP enjoying it, I've never heard of this before but it's utterly divorced from the IP. I'll never get why Hollywood makes fantasy properties into cheap live-action when full animation makes incorporating magic so much easier. Like when Nickelodeon attempted a live-action Fairly Odd Parents reboot, used the most basic sets and premises possible to save money, and then wondered why it looked like shit. How is a medium where you can literally DO ANYTHING, even with a lower budget, not the obvious answer lmao

WHICH is so baffling since their TV department is stacked with massive hits like Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, The Boys, and at least 40% of the Classic TV shows your, I guess now (grand)parents grew up with. So clearly their TV department can sniff out and locate hits, probably should consult them when buying MOVIE IPs.

    • @WasatchWind
      @WasatchWind 4 месяца назад +4

It's the risk aversion. The companies are producing tons of flops, but something that appears to make money are films attached to existing IP.
They never consider that this is due to them barely marketing original films, and not allowing creatives much room on said films.
They also have become obsessed with micromanaging their movies - in a world of vfx and modern editing, and now even some AI, you can focus group your movie into a perfect* product.
All this focus grouping, over reliance on cg, and just general bloat makes the movie more expensive to produce however - so you can't justify a small niche movie. Every movie has to have billion dollar blockbuster potential.
So that's how we have gotten to now. Granted, to give one mercy to Hollywood, the demise of home video/dvd sales really destroyed a major piece of insurance against risk - a small comedy might not do great in theaters, but for $20 a dvd you could make tons of money in the home market.
Now they have none of that, only streaming (which granted they've done a terrible job with too).

Big/Little Joel should do his own faithful rendition of this classic kids book, as a palate cleanser after this trailer left a bad taste in viewers’ mouths

This feels to me like the people who made this wanted to make a kids movie. Which sadly, is more than I can say about most modern kids movies which just feel like nobody involved wanted to do anything more than make money.
They went up to a film exec and said "we want to make a movie based off this existing property". And with the infinite wisdom of every film exec everywhere they thought about the nostalgia dollars existing properties drag in and said yes.
While the property is so unknown that they basically can do whatever and there isnt gonna be any rabid fans jumping down their throats over the disregard for established Harold-Verse cannon.
This movie looks weird and not exactly super high quality, but I am hesitantly hopeful for this movie to be more than a shameless revenue generation machine.

I love Zachary Levi in Chuck. Not a great show, but it's a huge comfort watch for me. Genuine guilty pleasure.

The original books as a kid were great and so imaginative and fun to look at and get lost in, but they were also hauntingly isolating and lonely; these purple line drawings existing in the vast white emptiness. Everything harold draws is just that, still a drawing. And even though he can climb on and through and around whatever he creates, all characters he draws are still just static images he has to imagine them alive and the conversations they have and the noises they make. At one point he wants to go home and draws an entire city, yet can't place his bedroom window among the thousands of ones he drew. This should have been an existential kind of 20min max silent short film, live action is just a terrible idea.

Something that frustrated me about these movies about being creative is that the designs they use are the most bland things imaginable. Like wow you could draw anything and make it real and you drew a plane?

This just baffles me on how they think this is gonna sell at all. Harold the purple crayon? In 2024??? I forgot the book much less a show even existed until I was basically yelled at by Columbia that it does

I remember the original show was decent for a baby show. Relaxing, nice designs, the crayon made it fun to watch. But into an entire live action movie is strange.

While the intro animation was kinda bland and looked more like a commercial for dishsoap or something, its infinitely more charming than the uncanny CG live action slop that follows. I don't think anyone was asking for this movie, but I feel like it would translate so much better into animation rather than putting a grown man in a purple onesie.
