This would make an excellent movie. This is the first time I heard of this battle. The intrique, the desparation, the patriotism, the tension in the plot, this could be a box office hit.
@@lynby6231 Yeah, the British got pretty upset with Hollywood when they made the movie U-571 starring Matthew McConaughey. The movie said it was an American sub that recovered the Nazi's Enigma machine when it was a British sub that did that.
It was a bearing on one of the prop shafts that failed necessitating them to return to the bunkers & giving away their position. The Mercury found was from 40 tonnes she was carrying destined for Japan. It was also witnessed by one young boy ashore. He heard the explosion & seen the stern of U864 rise from the water.
@@johnmoriarty6158. I assume so yea, it was for weapons production. I looked it up & it was 67 tonnes she was carrying. 2 or 3 Japanese scientists if I remember too.
There’s a better more descriptive video on RUclips than this, with a non robotic voice about cot Laundrr’s exploits, worth watching if you can find it.👍( it was called “ only underwater submarine battle in history” I think)
They already had ICBMs, the V2s. I think you mean nuclear warheads... (it's more likely however that Germany would have used a truck to carry the bomb since the warhead far exceeded the payload weight capacity of the V2 platform and literally every German bomber at the time
It's a nightmare fantasy, but only a fantasy. Realistically, only the US could afford the expense involved. The amount of electrical and material resources consumed was ridiculous for the time.
Also I think that some scientists sabotaged their work slightly knowing full well that Germany should never be allowed to have such weapons.. Cannot remember if I read this in Beevor’s book Berlin or it came to light sometime after..
0:09 - On February, 1945 was too late for a single mission "could shift" the tides of WW2. V2 has little impact in Western Europe, will have less in the Pacific.
How can you say that it was 2 miles deep and then show a surface a diver connected to surface air and portray that as if he’s working on the boat that’s not possible
Every sentence of this narration is done with the exact same cadence and emotion. I could only listen to about two minutes of it before I was so distracted by the narrator’s tone that I had to stop.
That type of thing in Red October is certainly possible. But up until the end of WWii Sonar wasn't that sophisticated. However it improved markedly post war and then you started to have submarines developed specifically to hunt and destroy other submarines. So in this case with HMS Venturer it was an amazing feat.

6:49 Why are the British using such huge and probably expensive bombs here? Is it us or did we just happen to be here? If us, how could they have known? Radio is the weak link of secrecy.
Yes, the us(I embarrassingly admit I forget which sub now) sank 3 Japanese subs in I think 36 hours. However none of the Japanese subs were submerged when sunk.
@@LadyDewBuild I've often wondered about that. But I have little knowledge of the international maritime law involved. The fact that there was a war on makes it even more murky. .

Yeah but unfortunately it wasn’t an American submarine that was the hero, if it had been you can bet that there would be countless remakes too

Been waiting to see this epic video, one of the only underwater battles in history.
Battle usually implies shots fired in both directions. This was a successful ambush if anything.
Great work with keeping history alive! And a event I never had heard of before, well done, incredible bravery for freedom.
There's a pretty good doc on here. The Hunt for U864 I think it's called.
UNDERWATER COMBAT, Good vids bro
I love these videos and the comments, the world is full of knowledge, if you open your ears and eyes
Great seamanship, awesome work by the crew..
@11:35. It's 150 meters deep, not 2 miles.
Could you imagine if Germany figured out nuclear weapons before the US did? They would’ve had ICBMs in 1945.

if the sound was recorded why not let us hear it?
It's long and boring. And I think they mean a record was made. Not a recording of the actual on sub action.

Dark, a Japanese sub was sunk by an American sub in 1945 i think... 1:17
So you’re trying to tell me that the sub on sub attack scenes in The Hunt for Red October weren’t real?

By “recorded,” I assumed this meant there was audio of the encounter. No? Or was that just a synonym for “documented”?
Documented.

A lot of the preamble is conjecture that isn't supported by history or reality. The rest is pretty good though.

The adjustable glasses advertised in the attached advertisement at 4:55 is pure rubbish. Don't get sucked in.
Idk why I had assumed submarines were underwater dogfighting (bottom gun;)
How was this a 'clash' or 'battle'? Only one sub got shots off at an unsuspecting opponent.

Talk about splitting hairs!
Why on earth didn't the British sent more than a single submarine to sink U-864?
