Adjusted subtitles and translations are up! I've been getting a lot of feedback saying that the Kakimori stainless steel nib is a lot more forgiving with the angle that you hold it than the brass one. Hope everyone is having a great new year (I'm VERY behind hahaha!)
Seeing your video post again made me ridiculously happy this morning. I always learn something new, and your videos are just so nice to watch. I really hope that Sailor Hocoro comes to the US, that looks like loads of fun.
Thank you so much! This comment makes ME happy hahaha! I think it will be offered in the US but right now they are having problems keeping up with the demand here!
The vintage mother of pearl/gold dip pen is beautiful!!! I've had the Hocoro on my wishlist but I was debating whether or not I would like it. Loved the video as always!!
Thanks so much! I prowled around eBay for awhile to get the gold dip pen and it is so worth it as I've used it for many years. The Hocoro is definitely at a much better price point!
"Fun ... but only if it hurts" should be their tagline! I'm a huge fan of Kakimori's steel nib. Crazy line variation and no hard starts. A bit more difficult to clean than glass pens tho. We'll need to bring some difficult nibs and inks to Kamihaku next weekend.
I just love your videos. Not only are you extremely entertaining but I always leave knowing something new and interesting. Keep up the great work. Thanks. Also, great music!
Thank you so much! I took a quick break to work on some health issues but really missed the pen community with such kind people like yourself. So good to be back!
This is my second time watching this episode. Wonderful! Decided to order both the kakimori and the hocoro. Now I have to be patient for their delivery. I’m ‘newish ‘to collecting and some of the most fun parts would have just flown past me if I hadn’t found your channel, thank you again.
Thank you so much--I'm glad you got some useful info out of this. I kind of figure this "fountain pen thing" is big enough to cover ALL kinds of fun stuff hahaha!
Thank you for another great video, and sharing your knowledge. You have such an interesting perspective. I bought my first glass dip pen (entry level) a few weeks ago, so really enjoyed learning lots from you.
So happy to see you. The Kakimori nib is a hit in US, we all had to have one. The store who has been selling them keeps running out of stock. I got the stainless steel and really like it. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on Japan releases.
They keep running out over here too! That is why I got the brass one, I got tired of waiting on the stainless steel! Hopefully the Hocoro will go Stateside soon. They are having problems keeping up with demand here! Thanks so much!
The Tono & Lims comment made for irl giggles. I've stayed away from some of those fun/challenging inks and admire your fearlessness. Thank you for another wonderful video! I recently got the Kakimori steel and brass and have enjoyed playing with them (still working on getting a consistent line, which probably speaks to how much I rotate the nib as I write)
I'm the same--that's why I just resorted to using the Kakimori as a fantastic "swatcher". It is easy to make nice straight swatches that are easy to compare to other inks. I'm to lazy to hold the pen at a consistent angle to write with it hahah! Thanks!
the sailor hocoro sound like a very interesting adquisition to make swatches for different inks and get something more similar for how the ink is going to be seen on a fountain pen
I totally agree with this. You can try many inks very easily but get a closer approximation to what a fountain pen would look like with that ink. Ideal for going to a pen meet or show!
I'm doing great! I've lost 40 pounds (though still working on it). I needed to concentrate on my health a bit but it's great being back. Thanks so much!
Thank you! I was asked to put some boulder opal in a vid. They are hard to film! Trying to get the "flash" or "fire" and not overexpose the pen was a challenge. Did you notice my wrists were skinnier hahaha! I've lost 40 pounds (part of the reason I took a break--I'm so tired from all the exercise!) Take care💖
After I learned about the Hokoro pen a few weeks ago I did some experimenting and found that at a minimum, the Kakuno nibs fit in a standard dip pen holder and work fantastically well as a dip pen. I suspect many others do too but I wasn’t willing to experiment with my more expensive nibs 😜 I also struggle with the Kakimori nib. A nice idea but frustrating in practice.
What?!? Off to play... Thanks, I like this a lot. It actually works better than a standard #6 nib that I bought specifically for my nib holder. Now I wish Pilot sold their Kakuno/Prera/Metro/etc nibs by themselves. I might have a Kakuno barrel without its nib for awhile.
@@MarshaLove0723 Yes I find they write great, but if I leave them sitting for too long the ink starts to evaporate and gets hard to clean. But I will admit I had them sitting for a few weeks. Still, my other pens don't have that issue.
A n artist friend of mine got the brass kakmori and she loves it for urban sketching.. the problem is carrying ink while on location sketching for me. I have 4 Opus 88 demonstrator pens that carry a ton of ink. They have modified Pilot parallel nibs.. thanks for this video..
Great to have you back! I recently got a Kakimori stainless steel dip pen and would say the same thing -- it yields beautiful swatches, but for regular writing, it's more difficult to control the line width than I'd prefer, and not particularly smooth. I'm fussy about consistent line widths, so I still prefer my glass dip pens for writing. I'll watch for the review of the Japanese glass dip pen that can be obtained overseas! (Comment on Instagram to come. 😊)
I got the Kakimori brass dip pen but I have hard time using it for regular/daily journal writing because of the ink flow/line skipping issues. I have much better writing experience with my glass pens.
Thanks so much Marilyn! Yes, I'm a lazy writer and to have to always think about keeping the same angle is just too much work for me! The Hocoro is pretty "pen-like" as far as writing goes but I like the swatches with the Kakimori! Hanabi glass pens are awesome!
Thanks for showing the comparisons between all the different pens you can use for ink testing. I really find your glass pens beautiful both in appearance and in the writing they produce. I have bought the hocoro 1.1stub earlier. Unfortunately, it dries out too soon after a dip, and the ink flow is hard to control (too heavy when you first put on paper, and too little soon after). I plan to buy and try out the fine nib though, since it seems the ink flow is much better.
I think you do get a more consistent flow with the F nib, but inherently, dip pens are all like that to a certain extent. A commenter earlier said she stuck a Kakuno nib in a (Zebra) nib holder and it worked well! You might try that. Thank you so much!
I have the Sailor Shikiori. “Yozakura”-I was comparing the the Faber-Castell Yozakura…mine is more grey-brown cherry color-which I really like, but this is a pretty more peachy cherry :) I like that Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen; thanks for the review-nice to see your new vid!
Thank you so much! I don't think Faber Castell is going to be as "crazy" as some of the Japanese inks. Both have their place on my shelf though! Take care!
The White dip pen looks really nice. You must treasure it !! I've got a few from an old French brand that you can get in flea markets and such... In wood mostly... « Blanzy et Pouré » or other brands... that have been unfortunately closed for a long time now... There goes more knowledge...
hahaha! That is what keeps this hobby fun--more rabbit holes to go down! Hope you are doing good Francois! I've lost 40 pounds (around 20 kilos) and am still fasting. Ugh. But all my numbers are looking so much better. Take care!
Beautiful pens and very informative video. I love the line width on the glass pen, but sadly, the price is out of my range. You know how I love a fine nib so that Sailor Hocoro is going on my wishlist. Maybe JetPens or Goulet will carry it at some point.

1. Such a thorough and informative video, thanks. This Sailor Boi is rabid for a Hocoro, if they would ONLY come out West. My experience with glass pens was that they are pretty unusable, being about ten times wetter than the wettest fountain pen. Look up "gloppy" in the dictionary to see a picture. But maybe in the last couple decades they've gotten better?
Thanks so much! And thanks for the video idea! The stub nib glass pen and the really thin one (the Helico) both don't blob on me, but I agree, many glass pens do and you have to be careful to only dip the nib in halfway.
The Sailor Hocoro is incredibly well thought out and designed: the way the nib stores within the body for protection, the variety of compatible nib units, and the available feeds that snap on to allow extended writing. The engineers and designers clearly spent a lot of time designing and iterating. The only problem is the nibs just aren’t very good. The Pilot Iro-Utsushi is probably the most lazily designed dip pen on the market. It’s just a cheap stick of injected molded plastic with a Pilot nib glued to the end. But the nib on it is fantastic, and that’s what is so frustrating. I would love to use the Sailor Hocoro, but the nib is just awful compared to the Pilot. So now my thoughtfully engineered and designed Hocoro sits ill-used in my drawer, while the lazy and uncreative Pilot Iro-Utsushi sits out on my desk used frequently. It’s very annoying. I really hope Sailor improves their steel nibs to be as good as Pilot, because until then, I’m stuck using the terrible yet great Pilot Iro-Utsushi.
Hahaha! Sorry to laugh at your pain and I completely agree. But I use the Hocoro only to test ink rather quickly along with a lot of other tools so it doesn’t bother me too much. If I really want to check out an ink, but just a bit, I just load it into a Kakuno- cleans easily and is inexpensive.

Is it possible to use these with drawnng inks like india ink?
I would say it is OK as it’s a stainless steel nib (so like using a better version of a dip nib) But the caveat would be that the newer models (that came out after I made the vid) now all have a plastic smooth feed. Those feeds snap out, so you could use it that way. But you can buy replacement feeds, so I would just try and just make sure you rinse it out real well when you are done with your writing/drawing session.
How do you keep shimmering/sheen inks mixed in the pen?
Sheening inks don’t need to be constantly mixed. The excess dye that pools on good paper causes the sheening. As for shimmering inks (with shiny particulate) I just roll the pen in my hands occasionally (like every few sentences) but sometimes, I don’t worry about it and will get some pages without shimmer and some with it!
