As someone who works in the dairy industry, and knows the laws concerning milk crates....
Milk crates are very expensive for dairy companies to make. Any of them, even damaged ones are recycled.
It is also against the law to have them and use them for anything other then their intended purpose which is to transport dairy products.
That is why there is a warning on the milk crates that say "Warning use by other than registered owner punishable by law." You also can look up the laws concerning milk crates.
Any business that gives them away to the public is also breaking the law and the people that have them in their possession are in possession of private property that is not theirs, which is also illegal.
People that do these types of things are what causes the cost of milk and other dairy products to continually rise. Just FYI.

@@Angela-rp9zg I mean don't know how much you pay for milk where you are, but if the added cost is free cartons, then sure, we pay a lot more for a lot less value. The company that delivered milk where I worked would never pick them back up and they'd stay in our store room until they got tossed and I imagine that's may be the case at Kroger's as well, so basically they're going to get tossed in the dumpster
Don't blame the stores and the consumers who are basically recycling them, blame the workers who are either lazy, uninformed by the company, or don't get paid enough to give a crap.

@@Angela-rp9zg Which state are you living in? As far as I know, there's a deposit, but no recycling laws associated with these crates. I do agree, however, that they shouldn't be just tossed into the trash. It's a waste of resources. I suppose trashing them might be covered by " Malicious Destruction of Property " laws, as they do actually belong to someone other than the restaurant. I think most people only consider the value of each crate individually, and not collectively. It does add up over time. What's that old phrase, "Nickel and Dimed to Death" ?

I have a 26th idea that alot more cooler
No pun intended with crate joke
    26. Hover crate
Ik how to build one but you have to have good strangth and endurance
Get a crate with really thick plastic that doesn't break easily
Then get some very stretchy but strong cables
Then make two ropes out of the cables
Attach both handles to the crate
    How to operate it
Leen forward to speed up and go backwards to slow down
If you wanna increase hight then put up on it more to create more lift
    How it works
As you pull on it the cables want to retract back to the original state and there for create lift
If you leen forward a little the cables will turn forward causing a forward motion, that also gos for turning or slowing down
I recommend you exercise so you can lift your own wight, if your able to then that's good news

It is also against the law to have them and use them for anything other then their intended purpose which is to transport dairy products.
That is why there is a warning on the milk crates that say "Warning use by other than registered owner punishable by law." You also can look up the laws concerning milk crates.
Any business that gives them away to the public, or any person ~stealing~ them from the grocery stores, is also breaking the law and the people that have them in their possession are in possession of private property that is not theirs, which is also illegal.
The dairys that deliver the products in these crates ALSO PICK UP the empty one that are STACKED OUTSIDE.
People that do these types of things are what causes the cost of milk and other dairy products to continually rise. Just FYI.

Unfortunately alot of people don't know.
We service about 100 Walmarts just in my area alone as well as Harps and Reasors and those in the dairy departments should and most likely do know that they are spose to be returned to
      the milk companies.
