- Did you know that sometimes wolves sing just to make music, as we do?
It's called 'social glue' - a spreading of good feeling like people singing around a campfire, feeling closer to one another - it’s that same idea: through song, wolves reaffirm social bonds with one another.
Zephyr and Nikai are captive-born gray wolves at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, in South Salem, NY. They are two of the three 'ambassador wolves' at the WCC that help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment.

if you are anywhere near this place, they (at least used to) do visits to schools. My kiddos and I saw Atka in person and it was like getting punched in the face with 'Other'. Breathtaking. I still tear up when i think of it.

imagine the comfort this would give you. you have super sensitive ears and noses. you can smell youre friends or a another pack miles away, but youre still "alone" in your surroundings. so you howl. and in the distance, your kin respond, reassuring you that no matter how far you are away, they will always respond to even a faint awoo. i feel lonely while surrounded by people, they can just howl and everyone they know will spread that howl across probably hundreds of kilometers, connecting entirely different societies through a random song.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe they’re checking on each other to see if they’re all okay, and to feel a sense of togetherness in order to signify that they’re not alone.
They warn other wolf packs away. Wolves are very territorial creatures, packs who enter other packs' territory will get attacked. I think each pack has its own sound too. And they can use it to get the pack together too.

Instead you should make yourself as threatening and loud as possible while slowly backing away from their territory. No turning away, no cowering on the ground, no running, don't let yourself be encircled by the pack, don't stare them down though. Pick up a stick for a weapon as well, throw stones etc. With a human you can reason, appeal to morals and logic, with a pack of wolves you can hope they are not hungry today.

Seriously, most animals fear humans because humans hunt animals, torture animals, fear animals and eat animals. You don't think animals can tell that? People have more of a chance of being killed by another human than any or all animals. I LOVE wolves!
