Pondering with a heavy heart--maybe as heavy as Kissin's hands on those last chords--on what's happening in Ukraine right now, listening to this throws me into great depths of sorrow, a state of intractable existential anguish. Anybody feeling the same way?

Me too. Loved this piece for many years, since my music teacher introduced me to the Russian composers back in 1983. I can't believe we are back in similar circumstances (cold war atmosphere) as to when I first heard it.

Hats down, people, this is a genius.
It's not just the unmatched almighty sound power.
It's not just the huge dynamical amplitude.
It's not just the creativity and absolute uniqueness in performing approach that makes him OWN this piece.
This is The absolute ability, placed at absolute submission to a timeless team that sometimes author and perfomer make. A collaboration beyond the limits of both time and life and death. And now THIS is Art in its essence!
And when I see videos of some lady-like performers crawling for survival under this Hell of a piece's demands, people hysterically applauding in comments proclaiming them for God himself, I think there should be some honesty in judging.
Where judging means ability to discern good from bad, mediocre from exceptional.
What Kissin accomplished here, is genious.

Courtesy of RUclips I've watched a few performances of 'Kiev' of late. It's a most difficult piece, even for the most talented. But I see the same problems arising again and again. I looked at the last portrait of Mussorgsky; even in ill-health he strove to create music - only for us; we must respect what he left behind.
Look at the middle sections - the ones that don't have audiences on their feet; they must be played with equal intensity. He wrote them to be played, so don't have a little rest when you come to them. Watch also the dynamic range; you can't go from so loud that the eardrums suffer to so quiet that you can't hear what is being played. Watch also the timing - sometimes it slips.
I know it can't be easy - but then it wasn't for Mussorgsky either.
