This shows so much of what we take for granted. There are children caught in war zones that have little to no hope and have no idea of what childlike innocence actually means. The soldiers who put their lives on the line to fight for the US on foreign soil, simply to protect us from potential disaster, are heroes. What’s truly heartbreaking is that there seems to be no end to the cycle seen in this video. Soldiers fight to protect us abroad, then come home and if they’re injured before their tenure is over, you wind up seeing them homeless, severely injured and uncared for, and in many cases, with PTSD from what they’ve seen. Then there are endless conflicts which are occurring throughout the world, with innocent people caught in the middle of it all. I was born in Haiti, and parts of Haiti look like an actual paradise, but in 1986, the military overthrew the dictator Baby Doc. As a result, there was a rash of looting and rioting and my family lost everything, leaving Haiti with nothing but our lives. We had a beautiful home there before it was destroyed, and started over from scratch here. Living in the US since 1986, by 1990, the feeling of safety was such that when visiting Haiti that year, at the age of 8, I took it for granted. My Dad told me not to go out after 9 at night, because there was an military dictatorship based imposed curfew at the time. It’s not something I fully understood, as it seemed like my US curfew. My cousin and I were playing laser tag and he suggested we go out after 9 to get batteries so we could keep playing. It was 15 mins after walking to a local street vendor before a pickup with a gun turret opened fire on a crowd of innocent people trying to get home. My cousin saved my life that night, and we saw unspeakable horrors hiding under dead bodies for 30 mins while the convoys left. I haven’t been back to Haiti since. It changed my life and it’s impossible to describe what that was like and what living under those conditions would do to me if it was my life. Once your innocence is lost, it’s nearly impossible to get it back. It changes how you see the world. I can’t watch horror films that have realistic gore, and my concept of how fragile life is has been heightened. It made me even more thankful to be here, despite the fact that as evidenced by political conflicts, this is a transitional time. My only wish is that people would treat our service people better, if you’ve ever been to San Diego California and seen the poor treatment of disabled military veterans, it’s heart breaking. They deserve so much more than that. Seeing this video reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for and how it feels to live in a sense of peace. It also puts into perspective how priceless that feeling truly is when you realize the struggles people in the rest of the world go through, from poverty to militarily controlled war zones. I still have a lot of family in Haiti, they’re living extremely well there, and it would be amazing to visit them, but it’s hard for me to see the juxtaposition of extreme wealth, and severe poverty, with parts of Haiti still decimated after the 2010 earthquake that claimed so many lives, including my God Mother and many family friends. This was a very brave piece of reporting on all levels, bring a much needed sense of perspective to a devastating reality that many people are facing in Syria.

Thank you for sharing. A lot of us here in the US have no idea how good we actually have it. I've only been here and was born here. I have had very close friends and their families that came from war torn countries. Listening to their life experiences and seeing how grateful they were to be here really helped make me a better person and very appreciative of the life we have been blessed with as well as our situations. I wish more people would count their blessings and spread more positivity instead of trying to find things to complain about. Some of the stories and things I have heard from testimonies are just horrible and difficult to imagine. Thank you for appreciating our great country and being an epitome of what this country really is!

I've watched a lot of documentaries about ISIS and it seems that a part of their training for international members is this type of legal evasion that we see with many of the western captured ISIS members. The soldiers who put their lives on the line to fight for the US on foreign soil, simply to protect us from potential disaster, are heroes. Soldiers fight to protect us abroad, then come home and if they’re injured before their tenure is over, you wind up seeing them homeless, severely injured and uncared for, and in many cases, with PTSD from what they’ve seen.
Then there are endless conflicts which are occurring throughout the world, with innocent people caught in the middle of it all. I was born in Haiti, and parts of Haiti look like an actual paradise, but in 1986, the military overthrew the dictator Baby Doc. As a result, there was a rash of looting and rioting and my family lost everything, leaving Haiti with nothing but our lives. We had a beautiful home there before it was destroyed, and started over from scratch here. Living in the US since 1986, by 1990, the feeling of safety was such that when visiting Haiti that year, at the age of 8, I took it for granted. My Dad told me not to go out after 9 at night, because there was an military dictatorship based imposed curfew at the time. It’s not something I fully understood, as it seemed like my US curfew. My cousin and I were playing laser tag and he suggested we go out after 9 to get batteries so we could keep playing. It was 15 mins after walking to a local street vendor before a pickup with a gun turret opened fire on a crowd of innocent people trying to get home. My cousin saved my life that night, and we saw unspeakable horrors hiding under dead bodies for 30 mins while the convoys left. I haven’t been back to Haiti since. It changed my life and it’s impossible to describe what that was like and what living under those conditions would do to me if it was my life.
Once your innocence is lost, it’s nearly impossible to get it back. It changes how you see the world. I can’t watch horror films that have realistic gore, and my concept of how fragile life is has been heightened. It made me even more thankful to be here, despite the fact that as evidenced by political conflicts, this is a transitional time. My only wish is that people would treat our service people better, if you’ve ever been to San Diego California and seen the poor treatment of disabled military veterans, it’s heart breaking. They deserve so much more than that. Seeing this video reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for and how it feels to live in a sense of peace. It also puts into perspective how priceless that feeling truly is when you realize the struggles people in the rest of the world go through, from poverty to militarily controlled war zones.
I still have a lot of family in Haiti, they’re living extremely well there, and it would be amazing to visit them, but it’s hard for me to see the juxtaposition of extreme wealth, and severe poverty, with parts of Haiti still decimated after the 2010 earthquake that claimed so many lives, including my God Mother and many family friends.
This was a very brave piece of reporting on all levels, bring a much needed sense of perspective to a devastating reality that many people are facing in Syria.

Thank you for sharing. A lot of us here in the US have no idea how good we actually have it. I've only been here and was born here. I have had very close friends and their families that came from war torn countries. Listening to their life experiences and seeing how grateful they were to be here really helped make me a better person and very appreciative of the life we have been blessed with as well as our situations. I wish more people would count their blessings and spread more positivity instead of trying to find things to complain about. Some of the stories and things I have heard from testimonies are just horrible and difficult to imagine. Thank you for appreciating our great country and being an epitome of what this country really is!

I've watched a lot of documentaries about ISIS and it seems that a part of their training for international members is this type of legal evasion that we see with many of the western captured ISIS members. I believe this is a part of thier larger goal to get these folks back into western countries to aid the spread of the organization. Very interesting and so far likely effective tactic.
