It saddens me that i've never really heard of Cunningham in the game, seems very similar to Garricha in alot of ways in terms of their position and that they dont appear to get as many plaudits as they deserve, so thanks for bringing Laurie to my attention
What a player. Put Laurie Cunningham in today's game and England would be absolutely terrifying down the left flank. Absolute shame he was taken from us way too early
I met him (Paul as he preferred to be called) a couple of times in Madrid. He was an absolute gent. The treatment he got from the press in Madrid was scandalous, and he had a few tasty words to say about the Real Madrid doctors and the operations on his knees.....
@@marleyite yeah, although I only know about him through highlights, it seems weird how he didn’t get more caps. In the same way I don’t understand that Grealish isn’t in the starting 11 for England!
I was lucky enough to watch the great man play at the Hawthorns, including in the UEFA cup. I wasn’t old enough to appreciate his immense talent at the time. The great man was taken too early.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Laurie’s agent. Like me he grew up in Hackney, and was from the first black family that moved into Hackney in the late 1950’s. He told me so many story about his life and about Laurie is was so amazing. At the end of the chance meeting I told him that so many great stories like his own and Laurie’s go untold and it’s such a shame, and it’s important British history that can and should be celebrated. Thank you Ambrose, I’m gonna go to the Hackney museum and look for the pictures of your family and hope I bump into you again one day. Bless 🙏🏾
Was lucky enough to see that West Brom side of the late 70s live. Regis and Cunningham were amazing. I was too young to realise the importance of him as a black player, and luckily young enough to not care if he was black or white. I was a winger, and he was a hero. Sadly he shone bright for too short a time.
Ashamed to say that I had never even heard of Laurie before watching this frankly breath-taking video. Got the feeling of really wanting to meet this great, great man. I was crying by the end because I'll never be able to. Heart-breaking...
Can you do one about Justin Fashanu? He was the first black player to command a £1million transfer fee, as well as the first openly-gay professional footballer.
I remember when WBA stuffed Man Utd at Old Trafford 3-5. it is one of the best games I can remember. I came away from that game just amazed at how good Laurie Cunning ham was. When he went to Madrid I was gutted as I hope he would come to Manchester. When he finally came to United I was thrilled. He needed to time to recover his fitness but it just didn't happen. It was a very sad day when he died in that accident.
Never understood why Ron Atkinson didn't give him a chance and sign him. I think he could have made Man United more serious title contenders in the 80s
would love to see a video on davie cooper , amazing player who died young at age 39 many say he was the greatest rangers players ever and one of the best scotland players has ever seen in the dark blue X
@Tifo When I first saw this video a year ago, the 1st thing that shocked me was how I never knew he played at Real, BECAUSE I recall quite well when Mcmanaman signed for Real in 98 or 99 from Lpool, media for 6months talked like Macca was the 1st Englishman to sign for them, history being made and so on. NO mention of Laurie being the first. No mention also when Beck's went in 03🤔
Would love to see a full length documentary in this style about a player or a special team. The way you narrate and the storyboards are really fun to watch. Also would love to see something around László Kubala as his background is quite fascinating or the a brief history of the famous Parma team of the 90's backed by Parmalats millions or billions that eventually went bust. Great work as usual guys!
Too young to experience watching him but my dad did and said he’s best player he’s ever saw play. He was part of a a great baggies team can only dream what could’ve been.
Fantastic video as always, but it was especially nice to see the narrator shift away from his usual speaking voice to do the bit at 2:06 Great work, you guys!
Hizo un partido memorable en aquel enfrentamiento Barsa-Real Madrid en el Nou Camp 0-2 creo recordar estuvo muy brillante dio una tarde de leyenda Laurie Cunningham
Growing awareness? Some of us knew at the time. While you are right racism on the terraces was rife, and ignored by the authorities, those idiots were a small minority. Race relations was improving compared to the 1950s when the majority of UK residents were opposed to immigration. The mid 1970s also saw the largest most organized and viable anti-racism movement the UK has ever seen. Otherwise, another great contribution to this series.
Make me shatter A tear...A true legend from A time when colored players were buuhed and shouted at. Cunningham and Regis were such A fresh and inventive couple in WBA in 1.division in the late seventies, they were thrilling to watch and poison to every defense....much like Yorke and Cole almost 20 years later. WBA had top flight magic in those days.
Cunningham only played 6 games for England over the course of 8 years. Even if this was largely out of racism, he wasn't as instrumental to Real Madrid as you imply. He's hardly the best black English footballer ever. Barnes, Campbell, Ferdinand come to mind. Sterling too.
Reason for not being overly successful at Real Madrid was due to his injuries. Laurie is the only Real Madrid player to ever get a standing ovation away to Barcelona playing for Real Madrid. This tells you how good he was before his injuries
@@shindasinghnajran have you forgotten Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, David Beckham? Still, nothing will convince me he was anywhere near Rio Ferdinand, Raheem Sterling or John Barnes.
Sounds like Cunningham was an excellent player - though there is apparently no investigation, at least in any news source that can be found on Google, into why he only won four England caps. Was it entirely due to racism, or was it more down to a mistrust of flair players (see also Le Tissier)?

If you listen to the podcast related to this video, Dermot, the author, explains that people saw players like Pele as different; black, but not from Britain. The term 'Black British' was yet to be put into full use, and also it gave direct inspiration to black British players who saw that someone like them, from their background specifically (not just skin colour) was able to have such an effect.

Laurie Cunningham, the first British player to play for Real Madrid received 6 paltry caps by his home country, England. What an injustice/disgrace.

Received 6 caps for England though. How? Dunce nation.
Exactly, How ? How many of this current England squad would play for Real Madrid at 23 ?
