@@DM-Timothy The timing was spot on too. I purchased Foundry a few months ago and played around with it a good bit, but still haven't moved my game over from Roll20. Hoping to set up my server soon and transition the game over in Q1.
Thank you for your videos! I always learn something new. We do in-person sessions with a digital map on the table and I'm going to test some of these out. Happy New Year!
After watching this video I have so much more respect for Fantasy Grounds. Nearly every add-on you mentioned in this video is a built in feature that's been in Fantasy Grounds for as long as I can remember.
It admittedly has a step learning curve but once you get past that it's really good. I like it much better than Roll 20. I haven't tried foundry but I have heard good things about it.
I've really wanted to go to a in-table battle map display screen. But I love using minis. Players need to track their conditions. It should be a spot on the character sheet and not left up to only the DM to track. We have to track enough already.
Golly, that'd be nice. lol. One of the perks of virtual is that both of us can track the conditions so I can see it get taken care of, and help out as needed, but CAN leave it up to the players.
How did you talk about Foundry for 10 minutes and not bring up Monk once (unless I somehow missed it)? Monk's little details offers a bunch of little quality of life things not mention their other modules. Also Condition Lab let you personalize conditions, add different artwork, and even add new conditions.
Monk's IS really nice for quality of life stuff, though none of them really fit into the theme of this video. Trying to highlight stuff that VTTs do to help, rather than specifically offering foundry advice, ya know. I haven't tried Condition Lab though, I generally use "Dfred's" instead.
@@DM-Timothy Condition Lab is essentially the replacement for Combat Utility Belt. You are probably covered with Dfred's. I like it because I can set up some system agnostic stuff, but Dfred's looks like they have everything for DnD already covered.
Damn. Here I was fairly happy with roll20, mostly because of the low learning curve for my players and I and the ease of setup...and then you have to show Ripper. My biggest complaint on roll20 at the moment is that I can't use dynamic lighting obstacles take height into account. GRRRRRR. Now I have to look into Foundry again for the umpteenth time just for that. Thanks for the video!
In my Wandering Tavern campaign I'm currently working on putting together a 15 level map with sight-lines and lighting all on one screen. lol. There are definitely some neat things Foundry can do.
Unpopular opinion: the Meta-knowledge from seeing the dice result isn't meta: a character knows himself and has a sense of how good he did a certain thing, like trying to hit a monster, even comparatively to another character. And even if it was Meta, that can be still good if it enhances the fun of the players. (an example of meta which i worth is the foreshadowing) Metagame is just another tool, a good DM knows when to use it.
I agree with your final statement most of all. Metagaming is just another part of the game, and not always a bad thing. I would agree that some things are fairly easy to know whether you have done well or not... Others, like perceiving a hidden item, or correctly intuiting someone's emotional state, I think are less so. Which is why I hide Perception and Insight, but not sleight of hand, for instance. It's a tool, but it's only a tool if you use it, instead of ignoring it. That's my stance, anyway :) YMMV!!
Sorry, I do not understand your Downvote. This video is not suggesting that we use Virtual to replace Live, but showing how to make Virtual better for those of us who can not make it to Live sessions. Getting together on line is a better social experiance than not being able to get together.
Great video, thanks for putting this together!
My pleasure, I'm glad you liked it!

@ congratulations on making the switch! Moving from one VTT to another is imposing. You’ll love it though, I’d never go back to Roll20

It's Cartesian Dualism. Matter and thought are treated as separate substances, so those two types of planes.

@ foundry has its own quirks and issues, but overall it is pretty amazing.

👎 Downvoted.
I only play live table top. The point of these games is for the social experience, anything else is a waste of time.

I'm pretty sure you can use a VTT at a live game by using a display screen.
The title says "Virtual Table Top". Why did you even come here?
