We are a militaristic nation. Military is a wildly popular institution in our country. Pakistan Military is an institution of Great Britain. Only handful of Generals are pious and the rest love to drink wine. Except the Taliban rest of the Afghan political powers openly defies the durand line. We tried to use Jihadits as useful idiots, some worked and some didn't. Same goes for the USA. West went with India's unrealistic Afghan policy and faced 2nd coming of Talibans.

Pakistan is stable because these 2 groups WANT to remain in power and you can not be powerful in countries like Iraq or Syria where there is anarchy. So they remain in power through sucking away tax money and aid, live like Kings and keep the public deprived of basic necessities of life.
