Getting to know the iconic Spyderco 'Para 3' which now comes standard in upgraded S45VN blade steel.
Let me know if you have any questions by leaving a comment below. Thanks, GG.

I started out with the PM2. I love the size so much they I haven’t tried a para 3 . I was like you . I hated the look of these knives . But I put my daughter (4 years old at the time ) on the SMKW website and told her to pick my next knife : she picked the PM2 digi camo so I gave it a shot . One of my favorite knives now . I have a murdered out PM2 in cpm s45vn. Love it too . Thanks for the video !! Take care Grumpy !!
I got both and figured out quickly I liked the Para3 a bit better. I may eventually get another PM2 someday (probably for the steel it's in, like my Maxamet I traded). For now, I don't even own a PM3 anymore, but I will get another of those. I am laser focused on finding myself the right Shaman without paying ridiculous prices for it.
Thanks for watching, brother! Stay well down there.
The "Spidie-hole" is arguably one of the greatest achievements in the history of folding knives. And the blade shape allow for that hole. How anyone can hate that is beyond me.
Drilling a big hole in the Blade creates a weak point and a different aesthetic than people are used to. The hole should never be an issue if you aren't prying with your knife. I used to buy into that bs before I got to know Spyderco. Now, they're a favorite brand, and it's my preferred opening method. People just have to get past the looks to try them.
Spyderco has to be one of the more polarizing knife brands there is, the blade shape design can be quite off putting to some people especially new knife enthusiast... but once you get them in hand it doesnt take long to release why sydercos are so damn beloved.
The leaf point blade and spydie hole isnt what most folks picture when they think of a knife blade, especially early on into knife collecting... I think people tend to lean towards a more traditional/generic blade shape and then with more experience you learn that theres pros and cons to each blade shape and as you refine your knife tastes you begin to realize exactly which blade shapes work best for you and your needs... And the leaf point blade is one of those shapes that happens to work great for a lot of EDC tasks
I dont see the comment anymore about the hole being a weak point but im guessing there was one... id argue thats gotta be an opinion of someone thats never actually seen and held a syderco in person since Spydecos have a thick spine that thins out to a excellent cutting edge... spyderco spines are like nearly twice as thick as the average folding knifes spine width... I couldnt imagine a spyderco breaking through a weakness stemming from the hole... breaking a spyderco tip, now thats a different story haha
It took me a long time to come to appreciate Spyderco, because I didn’t understand them. I couldn’t tell the different models apart! Now they are my favorite knives, especially the PM2 and Para 3s. L LOVE the wide variety of steels used for the blades, and I also LOVE the customizability of these knives! There are MANY aftermarket parts available, to make any knife one’s own!
@@GrumpyGruntThe Spydie Hole does not weaken the blade. Note that the blade is exceptionally wide to accommodate the hole? There is plenty of steel to support the blade… A hole has several advantages over thumb studs, BTW, including a wider range of approach angles, and the fact that the hole does not interfere with the cut, as thumb studs sometimes do.
@@yankee2yankee216 I just got the new compression lock Military 2 and I absolutely love it
The looks have scared me away for a long time too. Maybe it's about time to step over it and look more at the usablillity and the quality of the design. Thanks Grumpy.
The Para 3 is the perfect size, for me. I understand that it is the right size for a lot of people! Anyone who thinks it is too small should give it a try. It feels big in the hand, but small in the pocket. These are my favorite knives. They may not be the best knives I ever knew, or know, but they might be the best SERIES of knives, as I consider the range of blade steel and other options to be.
I didn't like them much either, and then I bought the Paramilitary 2 and I now own 8 spyderco knives
Also, the liners are milled out some. There isn't much room on the lock side, but the other liner is milled out a lot.
Perfect size for me. Took the pocket clip off since I EDC it in my pocket.
Right on. I like the size of the Para 3, but the PM2 has grown on me since I got another one and put some aftermarket scales on it. The OEM clips on most Spydies are not my favorite, so I do the same.
Excellent review and video! I have several Para 3's in various steels, DLC coated and uncoated blades and love them all, the perfect EDC knife. Thanks for sharing!
PARA 3 THE REAL SPYDERCO ICON... THE BEST KNIFE IN THE WORLD.
People might disagree about the best or not, but no doubt it is a great one. Just about anything Spyderco makes with a compression lock on it is going to be one of my favorites. Thanks for watching.
I agree. She’s my main B. With a mini bug out being the side piece.
Beste Knife in the Word 😂 waht a Clown🤡 Statement
Thank you for sharing the review Grumpy.
Thank you for watching, Mutstumbo. I hope all is well out there and you are staying warm.
Beautiful video my friend Always nice to watch! like
Thank you very much, my friend! I greatly appreciate your visit.
Oh hey a Para 3 right on
Nice comprehensive review! It took me a little while to warm up to my pm2 but now I love it. I luv it. I even wuv it. Thanks for the truths, Grumpy!
My PM2 Maxamet was a beast, but I loved the Para3 more. Now, I have neither. 😆 I'll eventually get another of each though. Stay well down there, Ninja!
I haven't had a spyderco with the compression lock but I hope to one day. Great review brother 👍
Grumpy Para 3 loving it !!
I need to start carrying this one again sometime soon. So. Many. Knives. 😵💫 Thanks for checking in, brother Scott.
Great review brother
Thank you! I hope you are well over there.
Thanks GG! That is on my list, looking around here but mostly the lightweight is available.
Initially I thought it was ugly too, but it's growing on me.
It's still ugly. You just get used to it and appreciate it more for it's useability. 🤣 I hope you get a chance to handle one soon, Dave. They are great worker knives. Stay well over there and I hope I see you tonight.
Thanks so much Grumpy 😠 for this video 📹
Thank you for checking it out, Marcos! Stay well, my friend.
I like the 3s but I think kno would want a 2!! I have never handled one but from what I see I think I would want a 2
I recommend handling them both before you buy one. Unless your hands are pretty big or you are seriously hard using your knife, the Para3 is just more pocketable and fits more people. Neither is a bad knife and I loved both. If I still had either, I'd offer to send it down for you to try when I get your box out to you. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't. Stay well, brother.
Watched this again to support your watch hours my friend!
You're the best, Angel! Thank you!
I took the leap and don’t regret it. But I will say that I think I’ve satiated my Spyderco appetite. I’m was never in either the Benchmade or Spyderco corner. I’ve found knives for better value and enjoyment elsewhere.
I have some Rips Garage Tech OD green American flag scales on mine, and you know me, I definitely plugged that hole (with a Flytanium crosshair stopper).
The way Spyderco keeps raising their prices every year, I may be done too. I have a couple more I would like, but the Shaman is the only one I am willing to pay Spyderco $ to own. They are such good knives though.
Thanks for watching, brother Winchester. Stay well down there.
I’ve got one coming in the mail, I’ll be interested to see if they’re still doing a stonewash or the normal satin because I prefer the former
Last I saw they are still stonewashed, which I personally prefer, too. I'm not a fan of satin. Enjoy your NKD!!!
I think these knives are all handsome. A pocket hog works 😂 it's a great knife. The one with the multi colored handle is still my favorite. Great work on that one. Compression lock sounds great
The dyed 'Native 5 Salt' you saw at the gathering is no longer mine. I gave it to a friend for his hard work promoting knife rights and this community. I need to get another so I can try the process again, but slightly differently.
Thank you for stopping by, Nicole! I hope you guys are doing well and getting out a little over the winter. Stay well.
Spyderco makes good knives, man. I like knives...but mostly in the kitchen. haha
It's way too easy to fall down the knife rabbit hole, and end up spending waaaaay too much money, so I stopped myself, and I'll just live the knife life through you, man. lol
Happy to do my part then, my friend. But be warned, the kitchen knife rabbit hole is just as deep and expensive when you find yourself in it. 🤣 Have a great week.
I love the spider hole 😭😭
I do too...now, but most people start off hating it.
I'm glad you're happy and loving that! I dig the compression lock. It's great.
The compression lock is right behind the button lock and above the Axis lock as my favorite locking mechanism. It's the most solid of them, from my experience. Thanks for watching, brother Nuzz. Stay well down there!
Man I hated the shape so much. Then I bought a Delica 4. Still hated it. Felt cheap, but it could cut, tell you what. Then I bought the PM2 cause lava. I love that thing. Its comfortable, looks good, and the full flat grind will slice anything. I still dont think Ill ever own more Spydercos...but they grew on me.
Get your big, ketchup stained ham hands on a Manix 2 and/or Manix 2 XL. You'll probably fall in love with it. Then you can be done with Spydercos.
@@GrumpyGrunt Hmmmmm ok! I will go find myself a Manix XL! If I don't like it....I'm pouring a whole jar of mayo into a river.
I was with you in the ugly category but I had to try one. The Para 3 led to Spyderco being #1 manufacturer in my collection. Have a good day GG ☕☕
It started me off on that path too, brother. I have backed my Spyderco buying down a bit (mainly because I need to straighten out my OpFocus membership), but there are others on my radar to get eventually. If you still think you want that s110v Manix 2, let me know. I am finding homes for some of my knives soon, including that one. Stay well down there, Scooter.
Never could understand why anyone would spend money on that thang,,, then I bought one, now all my other knives are put up, get them out flic em open a few times and put em back up, still love em but man this p3 is awesome it's with me night and day,, good review , later bro.
I felt exactly the same until I got one. I wouldn't spend that kind of $ for an ugly knife with a hole in the blade. Got a PM2 and Para3 in their seconds sale a few years ago and have loved them ever since. Glad you made the leap too and found you like them. Have a great week!
What is the steel that they use for the blade ser?
It is now CPM-S45VN steel. It used to be CPM-S30V. Both are great stainless steels for a working blade. The S45 keeps an edge much longer without being much more difficult to sharpen. Thank you for watching!
Complete noob here..which is a "better steel"? The S110V? On the S45VN? trying to decide between this one and the OTHER para 3
For most of us, the s45vn. While CPM s110v holds a better edge, it is a tricky steel for the average person to sharpen. The s45vn holds a great edge, is easier to sharpen and is tougher overall. Enjoy whichever Para3 you end up with!
The problem with the stock Spyderco clip is that it is not deep carry. By and large, we don’t want to attract the attention of Kens and Karens (or cops) who object to us carrying a perfectly legal knife perfectly legally! I just want to avoid the issue as much as possible, so I want my knife to be as out-of-sight as possible. The standard clip fails miserably in that regard.
Hey grumpy grump what’s up man how’s your day been what’s new
Hey, Newman. It's been a day. Just trying to get a few things done and start setting up for tonight's live. I hope you are well and having a great day too.
I hated the look and now I love it hahaha
It grows on you, doesn't it? They start out ugly as sin and, next thing you know, Spydercos are the only thing you want to buy. The Para 3 just gets so much done.
@@GrumpyGrunt yeah I was like okay I'll buy a tenacious because it's cheap and now I love it and just bought a para 3 for 180 dollars hahah
*PARA* 3 not Military… they took off the military since it is the Smaller Bro to the PM2
Thanks for being the 100th person to point out the obvious and insignificant mistake I made early on in this channel. I refuse to change the title just because it incurs pedantic comments which seem to keep this video performing well. Weird how you can play the algorithm like that, huh? 🤔
@@GrumpyGrunt cool great glad i can help
When i use my PM2 i feel like PM2 is better. But when i hold my para3..i feel like para3 is better. So i dont know which one is better. Lol.
That's a real thing. Now that there are all these aftermarket Ti and micarta scales for the PM2 but not the 3, I kinda want to try another PM2 with them on it. I think I would like it more with them, but only until I could get the same scales for a 3. 😂 Thanks for watching!
@@GrumpyGrunt I got a set of titanium scales for my PM3 from Rock Scale Design. I got the slim line for it and I absolutely love these scales.
@@Nothingtoya I'll check out the brand. I know there are a lot more for the PM2, but I know they'll eventually catch up.
Disgusting! I bought one tonight.
🤣🤣🤣 Congrats, brother. The PM2/Para3 platform is simply one of the best working designs around. I hope it serves you well!
Hi and Bye. From your friendly Canadian Beaver.🍁🦫 Make sure to always remember to follow your nose!🍁🦫
🤣 Hello again, my northern friend! I hope all is well up there and smelling more of spruce than moose. Have a grand end to your week and weekend that is grander.
