  • Cliffe Knechtle takes a visit to Texas State University where answers some tough questions about Christianity and also clears up some common misconceptions.
Cliffe and his son Stuart have an amazing ministry and I highly recommend you check out his channel to learn about the Christian faith from a lens of reasonability and intellectual honesty. Here is a link to the full video I commentated on: • Give Me an Answer - Al...
Dr. Richard Swinburne on the Problem of Evil: • Dr. Richard Swinburne:...
    PERSONAL COMMENTARY:
I love how Cliffe handles each scenario with a lot of kindness and you can really tell he cares and is listening to everything the students are saying. Props to the students in this video for being willing to speak up about their reservations with God and pursue the truth.
This is my first RUclips video about Christian stuff, and I've been hesitant to do this because I am worried that I might get caught up in chasing "things of this world" instead of chasing after the Lord, but so far it seems like this is the direction God is leading me so I'm going to continue with these videos.
If you found this video entertaining or informative, I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

You are fine as long as you don't read the Bible. One you see Yahweh's willingness to kill innocent children by the thousands , intentionally because their parents worship other Gods, show why it is still happening right now. You can ignore the OT like most Christians, but you are worshipping an evil that still happens right now. An archaic , violent religion based on fear.

@@barkerbikepirate4916 And yet good ISN'T subjective. It is objective because God made and is the definition of good. He made good. Good would not exist without Him. The simple fact that humans have the innate knowledge that murder is wrong, is the fact of goodness. That is our innate moral law and understanding that was given by God to us through free will. Now, Evil exists ALSO because of free will. Free will often overrides our innate understanding of what is right or wrong. That is the influence of Satan. Satan uses our free will and twists it in order to persuade us into forgetting about God's desire for our good lives and in turn, we hurt ourselves, the people around us, and God. That is called Sin. So, God made good which in turn, He made free will, and in turn of that, Satan, uses that free will against us and twists that goodness which God made into disobedience, and that is Sin. That is why there is good and evil in this world, because of Satan and free will.

@@Horrorscope.s Prove to me there isnt? I'll tell you how I know God exists, or at the very least, the supernatural exists. I would be physically dead if it weren't for Him, starting from my birth. I was rushed to the NICU due to complications, I had a torn artery in my head and the doctors told my parents that my survival would not happen. They prayed relentlessly and the morning after, the artery was healed. The doctors, who have had YEARS of training and expertise, who had graduated from the best schools in the nation, were baffled to say the least. Mind you, premature babies have a low survival rate and when added conflicts appear, the rate drops even more. Another example of God or the supernatural is that I have come out of serious depression without therapy, without help. I prayed relentlessly and whilst doing so, felt an immeasurable peace, the only thing i can describe it to is a hug. I can tell you that that sort of peace cannot come from anything else but God. Also, are you questioning whether God exists, or Jesus Christ? Though they are the same and are one, Jesus lived on the earth and was sent by God to save us from our sins.

@jaidenforrest Evil and suffering exists because it is a reflection of the ruler of this world. The devil showed Jesus the kingdoms of the world and all their glory and offered them to Jesus if He would fall to worship him. They belonged to the devil. And so the kingdom reflects its ruler. The kingdom of heaven is perfect..no death, sin, suffering, etc. It is a reflection of its ruler..a perfect God. When Jesus returns, he will establish his kingdom and destroy sin and death once and for all.

The simplest answer to the second question is this: it wasn't just people and animals that feel the effects of the fall, but all of creation groans. My interpretation is the reason the Earth and everything in it suffers is because it is under man's dominion, his responsibility. The same way a man's decisions could destroy his own family, who may be blameless regarding his mistakes.

    • @scottm4042
      @scottm4042 8 месяцев назад +7

And because of man's sin, God had to kill animals to make clothes for them. And the ground was cursed, as man now had to work and sweat to till the earth. Weeds, and thorns, and killing, and death began in the animal kingdom. Some believe that man had to give the world to satan until a Perfect Sacrifice could take it back. Jesus is the Second Adam. He defeated death, the grave could not hold Him. A theme of Scripture is that Jesus would sit at the right hand of the Father until all His enemies are put under His feet. And the last enemy is death.

I find Jordan Peterson prospective quite fitting to answer the pain and suffering question.
There simply isn't value in good made in an all fair and just world. To do good, despite the possibility of evil, is what makes good actually virtuous and valuable.
To that, I would add: we are not called to fully understand God's plan. There's plenty of stuff I still don't understand. But if I were to fully grasp it all, I would then be God. Since I'm not, I just stopped trying to rely on my own understanding.
When I can't see the point in something, I put my trust in the Lord. Still, I ask him to open my eyes, allow me to understand and all .... but I trust him

I would say we are made to be imagers; meaning, we are made to be transformed into the image of God by way of the Son, Jesus Christ and upon receiving the Holy Spirit. From that moment on, we may better reflect God, His nature (the light and life of Christ) into a dark and dying world to bring about the birthing of the Kingdom of God, on Earth as it is in Heaven.

--But the question was not answered & I don't understand why?! It's very basic, & atheists have always enjoyed pointing out that this world is IMPERFECT. As if that's some Holy Grail of gotchas.
---The answer is so simple, it's one of the 1st things we teach our toddlers, it's Adam & Eve(along with Noah, the Crucifixion & the Resurrection, it's the foundation of Christianity)!
-->This is NOT the world God created for us, this world is TEMPORARY. This is Our 2nd chance!
--God is a perfect Father, that loves us all & He created a PERFECT WORLD FOR US.
--He put ALL knowledge of sin & desire into 1 tree amidst a plentiful garden & told us NOT to eat its fruit!
--The deceiver convinced Eve that God was withholding knowledge, so she'd eat from that TREE of WICKEDNESS. Adam joined her, together they TAINTED THEMSELVES with all the SIN & DESIRES that OUR FATHER had tried to spare us from. God HAD to exile us!
-->The Deceiver thought that would be the END of us completely, but God loves us & in His infinite wisdom He came up with a SOLUTION!!!
--God sent Christ to show us the way back to Our Father & back to that perfect world He meant for us.
--We contaminated ourselves for knowledge, so we had to be sent to this imperfect world to learn to work the land, learn to work together, learn the pains of childbirth.
--We have to LEARN TO ACCEPT GOD & LEARN TO RESIST TEMPTATION to MANAGE ALL of those SINFUL DESIRES that WE took into ourselves before we can return to God.

What helped me when I started having questions about the pain and suffering in the world was a short book (160ish pages) called "The Problem of Pain" by C.S. Lewis. He goes through the logical reasoning behind free will and why "God doesn't do anything." He also dedicates a chapter to animal pain. I hope you and anyone who reads this find this helpful, and I pray that you continue to grow in your faith. Seeing someone show their zeal for God on a public platform like this is truly inspiring.

Physical pain and emotional pain are not identical forms or severities of suffering.
Even with the challenges that some animals suffer, I believe humans have a unique capacity for experiencing and projecting suffering.
This is thanks to our ability to look into the future and the past and get well ahead of the immediacy of survival. IOW we have more time to suffer than most animals do.

Hey Jaiden, thanks for sacrificing your time to make these videos. I’m actually walking a similar path to you. I’m 20 and I’ve also lived a life where I would had preferred not known God exists. Now I’ve truly given my life to God, I’ve been forgiven, and every day I fight to get closer with him and spread His word. I’m being called to Youth Ministry to help the youth of today not make the same mistakes I did. I am actually wanting to branch out into RUclips as well and you’re serving as an example of how I can do that. I pray that God continues to guide you and grow you. If you ever have time I’d love to speak with you, one of the biggest things I’m looking for now is someone my age who I can talk to intellectually, about the kingdom of God and His plan for us. God bless and merry Christmas 😊

Suffering has made me more compassionate.
Suffering has chipped away at my pride and given me more patience.

Many people sincerely do want to know, and we don't know the story behind him asking that question, but we do know everyone suffers. When we don't answer it with Scripture and rather intellectually appeal to people, that's not a seed of Scripture being planted. The answer is found in Genesis and repeated throughout Scripture because of what Adam and Eve did. He needed to explain what is sin and where it came from for them to understand what went wrong and why belief, repentance, submission and obedience is required.
Many people are sincerely asking that question, and very few people who claim to be of Christ know Scripture to give the answer. Paul said to study to show ourselves approved so we aren't put to shame but rather able to rightly divide the written Word. Consume His Body and drink His blood that you may be able to give His answer. ❤

My preacher just went over suffering yesterday. He said that God tests us to help us understand the faith that we think we have. If we think that we have a strong faith and God allows us to suffer it is a way of showing us exactly where we stand in our faith. He used Peter as an example. Peter was so sure that he would never deny Jesus and while Jesus was brought before the Pharisees Peter denied Him three times. He then realized his faith wasn't as strong as he thought it was. He allowed satan to torment Job to show just how incredible Job's faith in Him was. Suffering is to increase our strength and grow in Him.

Good could exist outside of something being able to define it. That was not a good argument. And to tell someone that they are not being intellectually honest when there was no indication that the young man wasn’t being intellectually honest felt like a bully tactic. He didn’t back him in to an intellectual corner. He just defined good as an intellectual concept where the young man was defining it as an entity that could exist without a person to define it, just like Cliffe feels about God.

    • @spikestoyou
      @spikestoyou 8 месяцев назад +1

“Good” is a descriptor used by rational beings, our concept of good comes from our minds. Outside of our own perception, it cannot exist unless there is a mind that has made it to exist. That is why Cliffe said “good” without a “creator” or “ultimate mind” is simply moral relativism. Without God, I can decide what I think is good, based on my own flawed reasoning. Or you can. Or we can decide collectively what it is. But that can never in a million years define something as being OBJECTIVELY GOOD, in truth. Objective good can only exist if there exists an ultimate mind that decided objective good ought to exist. Objective good PRESUPPOSES the existence of God.

    • @TheRecklessDark
      @TheRecklessDark 8 месяцев назад +2

That wasn't the kid's point. To summarise, he was trying to say if good is created from our minds and is subjective to a common consensus, why could that not also be true of God?
If the human mind can create the concept of good, it could create the concept of a god.
I don't feel like the kid was intellectually cornered, he even respectfully agreed to disagree and tried to move on only to be accused of not being intellectually honest.
      When he was saying,
"You're not listening to me and I don't like it."
What he was really saying was, "You're starting to intellectually corner me and I don't like it."

Enjoyed the video and Cliff had some good answers.
I'm not sure who said it, but this same question came up and the answer which I find is the best way to answer and to grasp the reasoning.
Similar to darkness being the absence of light and as lawlessness the absence of law. The absence of light does not mean light doesn't exist and lawlessness does not mean there is no law. Evil is simply the absence of God which is a result of the original sin.
Our life here is only temporary, suffering and pain here is only experienced by the flesh. The wrong doers will be judged when their time comes. Though it is difficult to accept that nothing we do will remove evil from this world, especially when you see the ones we love and innocent people suffer, they have an eternity waiting for them with no evil, no pain and no suffering.
    Stay blessed!

One important thing to remember while having someone at the college witness to these young students is fantastic and definitely a good thing. Every single one of these students needs to realize they have access to these answers by seeking the answers by asking God himself. My first answer to most atheists is to "Ask God yourself." why spend countless hours debating me a mere mortal? Ask God instead. I see so many spent countless hours of debate yet they never ask God themselves. What better place to get an answer than the creator himself?
If you genuinely want to know God exists , ask him yourself. I did about 40 years ago. I cried out in agony "who are you?" Although unbeknownst to me was that God was already drawing me to him long before I cried out to him.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day” John 6, 44
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” - Proverbs 9,10

What part of free will don't you understand, you are free to do what ever you choose, but also must bear the consequences of you choices. We live in a fallen world, everything went out of sync the moment Adam and Eve gave into sin, so all kind of bad things will happen, and since evil/Lucifer exists we have a choice the light or the darkness.

What I realise is, firstly in order for this guy to understand the context of evil and suffering he needed to understand the concept of good. Now from his interaction with Cliffe, I got the impression that he was asking questions initially like a Pharisee, only to try and trap Cliffe, but as Cliffe was straight and honest with him, not shying away from telling him exactly what this guy needed to know, he softened up and started to hear what Cliffe was saying.
As much as he didn't really answer this guy's question in Suffering and evil in this world, this guy didn't continue to question him on the matter which makes me think he was trying to test Cliffe, not genuinely seek an answer.
However, Cliffe did answer an aspect of suffering that makes sense where he said, Suffering happens because we inherently cause it. If we didn't want people to suffer, people wouldn't suffer as much, however, he did also say that nature is thrown into chaos because of the decisions of people. Problems in nature arise because of people's decisions and yet because of that initial setup where Adam told God to push off, God pushed off and chaos has a greater hold on nature in every aspect.
There is another reason for suffering is that in so doing God wants people to understand that without Him they are lost and cannot be saved. And suffering and pain has a way of reaching people in a way that comfort and ease cannot.
    So
    1. God has allowed suffering in this world because of our free wills we have basically told him we don't want him and thus we are dying because we wanted separation from the only source of life that exists.
    2. Suffering and evil exists be cause we cause it whether directly or indirectly.
    3. God uses suffering and evil to continually draw people to Himself. That he hates the suffering and evil that happens because it goes directly against His own character, that He never causes it or puts people in situations where they can only sin, but uses it as a means to draw people to Himself in a way that comfort or ease cannot.

It's a great Bible that illustrates how Jesus is present in the entire Bible from Creation to Redemption to Culmination.
The second is "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart. It was required reading in one of my Bible classes at Seminary but it really brings the truth of the Bible and how we can exegete (read out of) and not eisegete (read into) what the Bible actually says. I'm not surprised that you've had these resources, as they help to develop a Biblical foundation of truth.

One good reason that I’ve heard that explains why God allows pain and suffering is for education - if we have no concept of pain and suffering, there would be a few consequences:
    1. With no concept of pain and suffering, we would not be able to fully understand the tribulations that Jesus went through to die for us on the cross. We couldn’t possibly grasp/appreciate his suffering due to a lack of understanding it ourselves.
    2. Without experiencing pain and suffering, we would be weak. If we had everything handed to us and never had to experience hardship, we couldn’t develop the necessary traits that we need to have to be called Christians. If we never have to wait, we can’t learn to be patient. Without testing us with evil, we could never grow to be like Jesus.
    3. With pain and suffering, we can’t learn to lean and rely on God and Christ to help us through tough times. We wouldn’t need him to help us overcome hardship if hardship didn’t exist. It strengthens our reliance, our relationship, and our understanding of His love.
This makes sense to me, and maybe I could be wrong. We might never know why God allows evil and pain and suffering to exist - but let’s assume it’s for a greater good than we are able to understand.

  • @arjunheart5859
    @arjunheart5859 8 месяцев назад

I have a rather clear explanation why we suffer: There is no darkness without light. There is no falsehood without truth. There must be an opposition in all things. If not so, righteousness could not be, neither wickedness. If we did not suffer misery, we would have nothing by which to contrast joy. God, in his infinite goodness, allows us to suffer and hurt so that we might comprehend joy and wholeness.
Cliffe does make a valid point in that this is a fallen world. Earth is not in a condition to withstand God's presence. Mortals are allowed to choose - that is the greatest gift we have been given, with the greatest price hanging in the balance of what we choose.

I've thought a lot on the existence of evil, and I've come to a view understandings.
    1) evil exists because God gives us free will. The free will to choose good and choose Him, and the free will to choose evil and our own desires. If God were to present a choice, but then remove it the moment we try to make it, that isn't free will.
    2) we all commit evil. Some of it we don't realize is wrong, some of it, we rationalize away, some of it big, some of it small. No one is perfect. For God to remove evil, He would either need to wipe out humanity, or wipe out free will.
2.5) He almost did wipe out humanity with the flood, but chose to spare one righteous man and his family. There multiple instances of God sparing the guilty for the sake of the innocent.
    3) evil will be removed. The world we live in is temporary, and judgement is coming upon man according to their deeds, and upon the whole world, which is why those who believe in Jesus are forgiven, for He has lived the perfect life, and paid our punishment. Thus we are either judged by Jesus, or judged by our own deeds.
3.5) the new heaven and new earth will be a world without evil for those of God, and those who put their faith in Jesus.
    4) God's allowance of evil is meant to provide space for the guilty to repent. It is a temporary time alloted so those who commit evil aren't immediately judged, but are able to repent and come to Christ. God is staying His hand temporarily, but judgement will come "vengeance is mine, I will repay."
    5) this is purely my feelings. How better to appreciate heaven, than to have suffered through this current life. How can I truly understand and know joy, if I don't know pain and sorrow? How can I truly understand and know peace, if I have never experienced anxiety or strife. And how much more beautiful will heaven be, with all of this as the precursor. This world isn't the end all be all, but a temporary time of tribulation. A time given for everyone to repent of their sins and turn to Jesus, for judgement will come. Every secret thing will come to light. Every deed will be judged. Thus I personally put my faith in Jesus, for I know I could never earn forgiveness, but so great is God's love that is has provided the avenue for the guilty to be forgiven, that He suffered and died in our stead, and rose from the grave, so that all who put their faith in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

I’m agnostic. I don’t act good for a reward when I’m dead. I think it’s more noble to do good for the world when you’re convinced you never know when your time is up and that this life is all there is.

That's a nice, if watered-down, version of Kant's line of thinking. But there is a fundamental problem with your line of reasoning. Without wanting to descend into the quagmire of semantics, let's look at your words: ''noble'' and ''good''. These terms require some unwavering measure against which ''noble'' and ''good'' can be gauged. These concepts can't be just culturally relative: every culture has its different expressions of what ''good'' and ''noble'' LOOK like - acts, words, gestures, etc - but ALL agree that is such a thing as 'good' or 'goodness' in the first place. It's that ontological element that we need to attend to. Where did EVERY culture...or, better, WHY does every culture, have this idea of ''good'' to begin with? Essentially, why does Mankind insist so much that there is both ''good'' and ''evil''? It begins with consciousness... the moment a human acquires even the simplest of language, it almost immediately acquires knowledge of ''good'' and ''evil''. So... where does moral conscience come from? The Christian answer? God.

When a blind man tells others that have normal eye sight it's ok to stare at the sun and tell him it's not going to hurt his eyes, so are those who are blinded in their heart.

    Answers to all of them:
"How Heaven exists if you never been there?"
    -Because God said so.
    "How do you trust God?"
-Because he is perfect so he can never lie.
"Why God lets bad things happen?"
    -Because we deserve it.
"Why God just doens't end evil?"
    -He will.
