    The teacher explained the method of converting the equation from general to standard form, but she completely skipped over the "completing the square" part and just put the answer down next. So I was confused like "where did those two extra numbers come from?" and due to online learning, it's hard to get word back on time. But so glad I watched this! It really made this entire thing easier, thank you!

    How do you do this but with a number before the variable such as 2x^2+2y^2+12x+20y+36=0? Im very confused. I don't understand how to factor it since there is a two before it.

    Can you give an example (doesn't have to be practical) where this conversion is necessary? By that I mean: Is there an example where the general form "pops up" naturally (and the standard form does not)?

      Part of the problem. It is the equation of a circle. We are just writing it in a different form.

    What if the x^2 and the y^2 has a constant(?) (is that the right term? English is not my first language).
    For example: 2x²+2y²+16x-4y+17=0

      It would be called a coefficient. You would divide each term by the coefficient and then work it like I did in the video.

    am I going to get the half of 2 only and square it? or the half of -2 and then square it?

      It doesn't matter. Because you are squaring the number you half. So it will always be positive.
      2/2 =1 and 1^2 = 1
      -2/2 = -1 and (-1)^2 = 1

    what if you get a decimal no. from getting the half of y and square it?

      joemark castro Lets say u have to take half of 3. Instead of writing 1.5 I would write it as 3/2. Then squaring it would give u 9/4. Keep everything as fractions.

      It would not be a circle. It would be an ellipse.

    Sir i have a question what should i do if i need to square a 9 unfortunately the half of 9 is 4.5 what should i do to get the square of 9?

      Jacob Mendiola I would write half of 9 as 9/2 instead 4.5. Then when u square it u will get 81/4.

      You take the number in front of x which is the 8 and divide it by 2. This gives you 4. You then take the 4 and square it which gives you 16.

    In your second example, you had the standard form as (x x 3/2)^2 + (Y + 5/2) = 25/4.
    Should it not have been (Y + 5/2)^2 ?
    Or did I miss something?
