I had suspected there might be incidents on the river such as these, but until now, never heard the stories. Thanks much!

    Portland here 🌹
Thank you for covering the consequences of the volcano on the maritime industry. We've heard and seen everything else covered but you are the only one who acknowledges the river and her traffic.
I just discovered your channel and you have a new sub and my undying respect. Thank you 🌹⚓

I don’t understand how they didn’t know this was due to the eruption. How could they have not seen it or heard about it by the next day????

How would they have? I lived in Vancouver in 1980. The mountain erupted in kind of the opposite direction of us, we didn’t realize how bad it was until we turned on tv. Well, except my mom who would get horrible headaches every time the mountain exploded (there were several smaller ‘eruptions’ before May 18th and some afterward). Her headache kept her in bed and we didn’t go to church. She told me her head hurt and the mountain erupted but we didn’t see much, compared to what we’d seen in April especially.
Anyway, it’s very believable that they didn’t know. They probably weren’t on the radio with locals.

@@michelleb7399 …I was 40 miles south near Scappoose, OR….and believe me, there was still a massive, massive ash cloud even though the force of the explosion went off to the northeast. It was very clear that she’d blown her top.
