This is why I love RUclips. First I'm watching a guy who is seriously into 18th century reenacting showing us how to make journey cakes (baked on a board no less), then I'm watching a nicely done review of a really nifty communicator. Great stuff!
So do I - its quite silly but fun at the same time. *sigh* silly muppet wants a pizza. Of course Spock is going to say "he didnt get that" - the silly muppet didnt say Hawiian or Pepperoni! :P
That's a really nice replica, and it has good modern functionality. Back in the day this was seen as really high tech, but the future turned out quite different. now we have touchscreen devices, drones, VR and other really high tech things we take for granted.
Wow very cool replica, I actually got a chill when you flip it open and I heard the actual sound from the original. Your videos are always great Mate. Cheers from New Jersey USA. Gio.
Reading some of the comments on RUclips and the blog, I cannot fathom why people want to give this guy shade. I guess there a lot of angry people in the world with nothing better to do. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for posting them.
I've run across my fair share of Trekkies in my travels. And still wow and impress folks where I work when I pull out my communicator for calls. And being a Trekkie myself... it was a MUST HAVE item. Like the Star Trek Phaser Remote Control...
Thx, Techmoan. Great review. FYI, I was a kid in the 60's and grew up watching the original airings in the U.S. Like many kids, I wanted a cool communicator... so I made one! My dad got me an old transistor radio, which I gutted and put the components in a properly sized chalk box, then wrapped it in masking tape - even made a "flip" grill, plus an access panel on the back. I was the coolest crew member on the playground!:) P.S. For hardcore TOS fans, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking out the fan-fiction productions of Star Trek Continues - extremely well done!
I am a big fan of Star Trek and that is a pretty good replica and I like what it can do. I may have to get myself one of those. Personally I have always wanted a Tricorder from TNG/Voyager/DS9 that actually works as a tricorder should. As always the muppet ending is great and funny!
I own one. It dont do caricature voices. But it will comunicate with your virtual assistant. And with an app on your phone it functions as a universal translator. Make calls, read and send texts and all the normal hands free Bluetooth functions. Plus it does the next generation chirp sound effect as a prompt when taped . All functions from 1 button. It's held on with neodymium magnets but i also use double sided tape on the magnets and back of combadge just to make shure I don't accidently knock it off and loose it.And it makes shure that it keeps the correct orientation. Otherwise it tends to spin around.
What a great gadget! And what a nice surprise for you to receive after forgetting you ordered it... Thanks for the splendid review, I love it! Filmed with a decent camera, well edited and thought through, so that every aspect of the communicator becomes clear, and well spoken not to forget. Your review is miles ahead of the usual shakycam efforts with someone mumbling about as he/she tries to unpack something with one hand and film with the other while trying to come up with something useful to say... Keep up the great work! Greetings from Germany, nackenbeisser
If i had the money i'd order one right now. I love it and watching star trek as a kid was always a highlight of my week. Just to go off review for a moment, There was a boy at school who's dad owned a sheet metal work factory and he made an exact replica of one for his son, we were so jealous the way he used to walk around school flipping it open and saying "Beam me up Scotty" you can imagine the kudos that gave him (what a git) but his didn't chirp (or tweedle if you prefer) like the real thing. Thanks for all the work. Stay Safe.
I've got official collectible 'toy' version which is indistinguishable from this, now over 20 years old! Same weight, build, etc. But, mine records voice notes, the round spiral dial opens up to reveal an LED clock on its back, and a calculator resting on the bottom looking up at you. Lights up and displays just as nicely! I can almost swear that the battery has not been changed since!
Be careful with the battery in that. I have the same communicator, and the old battery leaked and caused quite a bit of damage. I have to figure out how to restore the chromed plastic.
I'm not even a fan of Star Trek and I want one so bad! It would be a nice thing to have as a display piece in a pop culture room or on a desk just to look at.
kirk used to adjust the circular dial when he could not hear or be heard by the Enterprise. I doubt if this dial turns but no matter what it is Fascinating Captain
Love it! Original Series was my second favorite series. I liked Next Gen best. I've seen all of them! And I'm 23! I mention that because some people care
@@jaysmith2858 I liked them all, not too much about TOS though, something about Kirk that irks me. That said, STD would have been much better if it did not pretend to be a Star Trek but instead be a series on it's own. Like: The Amazing Adventures of Michael Burnham
@Roborav D Maybe after the third season. But I suffered enough through the first two. The fact that one of the main features was the holodeck, where fictional characters were living their dreams, as opposed to TOS where the characters were living ours in a real place made it an utterly repugnant show.
Sweet. I can remember hearing through the grapevine that a full mobile phone was going to be offered just like the unit you show. I believe that the idea was lost in legalities and the idea died on the vine. Nice to see that this model came into existence unlike your puppet! ; - )
Hi Great review of the TOS Communicator, which is absolutely awesome! I am a Star Trek Enthusiast, and I will buy one of these one day! “To Boldly go” 😊
Good review and I like your beam me up at the end effect. When I was a kid I bought the model set at the hobby shop, now that I am older I wish I could afford one of these and a replica Phaser.
So I grew up on the original series when I was a kid, it was actually just out and was on the TV a lot then as I grew older the re-runs came about I watched that show so much I burned out on it. I will say they sure did a great job on this (even tho I won't be wanting one) and many a star trek fan will love to have it.
Love your videos - have an idea for one! Could you explain why headphones and headphone jacks in the past (80-90's) used to break or wear out so easily? Seems like ones made in modern day are much more durable!
I like your concept of connecting to a mobile phone which was actually put to use by me with my Nokia 808 and my laptop computer in 2012. I used my laptop as for bluetooth calls using the laptop for conferencing voice over bluetooth and video over broadband at the same time. Circuit switch calls over 3G are much better then audio on Skype....
I like the new ending music, glad ya kept the original starting music though. It's like your signature sound. Kinda like the original THX sound, they've tried replacing it, but nothing beats the original.
Your voice sounds very familiar and I've finally figured out who you remind me of: Ian McNaught-Davis, presenter of various BBC tech shows in the early 80s (The Computer Programme, Micro Live). You even have a similar inflection. It's very comforting. :-)
Thank-you for this video. Like you said I remember growing up with Star Trek.....I have never owened a smart phone but I think this would get me to buy one just to use the communicator. Very COOL !!!
Techmoan reviewing what no man has reviewed before.
Techmoaning where no moan has goan before!
Michael Fisher (mrmobile on youtube) also did a great review on this.
But not to boldly review, because that would be splitting an infinitive, a grammatical sin.
flossy made review too
+Terry Clark what does that mean?
Nothing better than a late night purchase after a few beers. 👍

I'm not drunk yet so please tell me how I can get one of these!

This just has to be one of the best channels on RUclips. True escapism! Thanks once again for the great video.
I cannot think of a more awesome thing to arrive in the post, love it!
My 50 year old dad recently bought a box set of all of the original series episodes and I really like them
I love the little muppet bits you do at the end of videos.
It really does! Please keep doing them!
I don't view it that way. I think it just mocks the stupid and irrational commenters
That scene is "kinda" reminiscent of the cafe scene from a Twilight Zone episode starring William Shatner, it was called "Nick of Time"
So do I - its quite silly but fun at the same time. *sigh* silly muppet wants a pizza. Of course Spock is going to say "he didnt get that" - the silly muppet didnt say Hawiian or Pepperoni! :P
...and wasn't the sequel called "Justin Nick O'Time"? :)
MAD PROPS to you, +Techmoan for that bit of video wizardry at the end, there.
I'm not even really a Star Trek fan and I think this thing is super cool.
I had no idea that I needed the Star Trek Communicator until I saw it on this video!
What a fun purchase and great review, thank you. I had no idea such a device was available and loved the "beam up" skit at the end as well!
Techmoan , Star Trek TOS , and Techmoan puppet .....my life is complete now
Got mine too recently after many months. Agree that the detail and quality are awesome! Love it.
This is the nerdiest thing I've ever seen despite how awesome it is.

Great effect at the end Mat. Thanks for the video, as always.
Fantastic! 56 years old here and I felt like a kid again watching this. Thank you so much.

Spock: Explain sir...
Kirk: I've got a right ear, a left ear and a final frontier :P

Great review. Thank you. Love the macro views showing the fine detail. Just ordered one.
Yay, a refreshing change of pace.
Love the ending! Made me chuckle.

Awesome outro again :D
Thanks for the video.
