Chase only agreed to check this again because of the negative PR. If not for this report, they would have not done anything.
Because they didn't have to do anything. The guy was an idiot and handed his credit card to someone letting them out of their sight. It was a scam against him, but not "fraud" since he willingly handed over the card.
It always seems to be like that. Once the TV stations get involved, then OMG, sure we will refund the charge. That in and of itself is a scam.
@@mikeydude750 Fraud is when someone steals from you or charges your card for something that you didn't agree to or receive services for. So it WAS fraud AND a scam to commit fraud. I'm surprised you do see that.
That’s why you use a cc and not debit. Bruh I was in Mexico yall kno what happened df 😂
Everybody is scamming Chase these days
It's unfortunate that people are attacking him but Chase definitely exercises a "The customer is guilty until we get exposed by local or national news..." Policy.
It IS his fault. He handed his card over, at that point you willfully gave someone your card to use - unsupervised. That is not fraud. That is really dumb move. Go to the payment terminal yourself and pay, ALWAYS. NEVER hand someone your credit or debit card.
@@Smokie181 The man never agreed to spend $1512.91 on a rental. Perhaps we should call it theft instead of fraud. Imagine you lose your Chase cc, and Chase says, you must pay the bill because the actual card was inserted into a card terminal.
Don't ever let anyone walk away with your credit or debit card. It takes five seconds to snap a pic of the front and back with their cellphone. Plus they have no idea who used their card. Sounds like the rental car agency pinged it. Clowns
Not much of a scam if you give someone your card and walk away! WTF?!?! Some people do the same thing with cable TV and give call center reps their credit card numbers over the phone. Those representatives, usually scumbags, the cable company hired will write down the number on a sheet of paper and another "diverse" person will walk by and steal the number!
@@Smokie181. ......especially in MEXICO !!!!!!
With Chase, it seems to be standard operating procedure. If you complain on your own of fraud, they deny you and hope you give up. If you then call your local TV news station, then they pay up.
Chase is the other villain in this story.
If you have the news to get a refund then Chase is part of the scam.

In Brazil you never let anyone walk away with your card. Even when you eat at a restaurant they swipe your card right in front of you. You learn real quick not let your guard down when traveling abroad.
I noticed the same process when I went to Mexico on vacation. The waiter charges you at your table, so your card is never out of your sight

Always keep your card anywhere
No one touches my card anywhere, even in the USA. Trusting no one is THE core principle for happy living.
you can still get skimmed
When I was in NYC recently almost every business took my card away to swipe it. These were mostly food places when I was out and about in the city. They also very rarely told me my total before taking my card. Thankfully I get a text every single time my credit card is used so it was easy to keep tabs on charges but it still grinds my gears.

That's not a scam, that's just plain stupid the person giving a stranger your credit card and letting it get out of sight. Would you give a stranger $1500 cash and let him out of your sight? I think not.
Which is exactly why Chase is suspicious of the claim.
he was too naive but has the money to spare, so let him be stupid. "a fool and his money are soon parted". personally i dont want him to get his money back, the increased rates we are seeing are part of the stupidity of others these days and im tired of paying 'dumb tax' for other people.

Good thing you owe about 1 billion dollars to the Sandyhook victims.
I wouldn't trust anyone with my credit card OUT OF SIGHT! Never and if that's the way the gas station does business than I wouldn't go there.
While maybe not the smartest thing to do (allowing a gas station attendant to walk away with your credit card) it's a scam. This is what businesses do in Mexico, and other places too. If they spot a tourist, they're fairly certain they'll be 1,000 miles away back home when they find out.
Chase is the ABOSLUTE worst to get a dispute handled. I had a card compromised at a gas pump, and they wouldn't pay until I fought for weeks on end. Horrible experience.

Pre paid debit card or cash only when traveling...
@@Qrayon Pre-paid debit cards are NOT linked to his bank account. They are pre-paid to a certain limit. If he only puts $100, then that's all the thief is gonna get. Same with cash... If you're only carrying $100 in cash then the robber is limited to that amount. However, pre-paid are more convenient to carry than cash (coins and dirty money).
Cash. That unfortunately, creates problem 'B' for the gringo in Messko: The Police shake down and outright mugging/robbery of your pesos.
Nope that's backwards. Pre-paid, you are usually out the money while with a credit card, i've never had a fraud claim denied.
If you are thinking you are safer because you don't have much money on your pre-paid, first that doesn't make sense when traveling because that is when you might need a lot at once, the most, but second, if you are that concerned then you can just get a credit card and set a low max charge limit, same as if you had that limit amount on a debit card except a lot more likely to be covered by a money back fraud guarantee with the CC.
Yes!
What I’m learning from all these scam stories is that Chase Bank will never believe your fraud claim. I might have to consider closing my Chase account.
Chase is never going to cover their customers. We stopped banking with them.
This happens in US drive-through restaurants with such frequency, that it no longer gets covered by news investigators.

Here in Cabo and anywhere NEVER give your card and have folks walk away with it, ask them to bring the terminal to you!
I can't remember the last time I swiped my credit card anywhere but it's probably been 20 years. Europe and Canada has converted to chip only for card-in-hand transactions in the early 2000s. You must agree to the amount & enter your *PIN* to validate it.
This kind of scam is impossible here.
Careful, you might get proven wrong. Transactions under a certain amount do not necessarily require a PIN, even when using chip as opposed to a mag stripe. Add the increasing threat of shimmers, and you may not want to be so cocksure about what is impossible in your corner of the world.
@@drstewart Copying the information on the mag stripe is still useless. Using near-field communication (NFC) still require the card. It cannot be cloned.
@DonnellOkafor-pd7yn I think many people are confused about this. Whether contact w/ PIN or contactless, the authentication is done in a *challenge-response* mode as opposed to merely providing static credentials. You need the specific card. You cannot make a copy of the private key stored on the secure element.
All developed countries have done away with swapping because it is intrinsically unsafe and prone to fraud. Many modern point-of-sale terminals do not even have a slot for swapping anymore. The US is pretty much alone here.
Don't go to Mexico!
Like the same thing doesn't happen in the USA? Credit card skimmers on gas stations, baristas stealing credit card information, etc.

Smart enough to rent a car, not smart enough to use cash.
This just happened to my friends last year in Mexico. They paid for gas and just down the road, they were alerted of an exorbient charge. It was charged to a completely different business than the gas station. The CC company took care of it for them.
Never let a person walk away with your credit card 💳
Ok first always keep your eye on you card, never let anyone walk away with it. Second use cash always in Mexico. Be smart
Setup up email or text message alerts when a charge is over a certain amount.
And when you do use cash, MAKE SURE you count it out as you're giving it to the person. Scams are easy if you don't. You may give a 500 peso bill but they turn around and say wait, this is only a 50 or 200 or 100 and then you have no proof. Make sure you count it out IN FRONT OF THEM before handing it over.
Cash and be robbed. No.
I went to a restaurant in Cancun and gave them my credit card to pay the bill. When I came back, my card was charged $3000 for Costco, etc. Thank goodness I was already home when the charges were made, and the issue was resolved quickly. I had my return flight ticket as proof.
Stupidity is always priceless.😂
The biggest mistake is banking with Chase. What a bunch of crooks.
Same people making rude comments are the same people who don’t think twice about giving their card to a server at a restaurant, for example. 🤦♂️

Always pay with pesos and make sure the amount counter starts at $0.00 before the attendant starts pumping.
Yep, I had a guy do that to me at a Chevron station in California with my propane, he never reset the pump, he wouldn't return my money even though my 8 gallon tank on my motorhome wouldn't hold the 13 gallons I was charged for, I called chevron and told them I was calling California weights and measures department, funny, I got a $100 gift card from them a week later.

Charles, do you know how many people in high stations are scammed every year? Yes, I'm talking about educated, well-to-do people who should know better but fortunately, our government does not refer to them as fools....the FBI takes such matters seriously and works to prosecute those responsible.
first off, why would you hand anyone in mexico your credit card to let them walk away with it for? i watch people whenever i give them my card at all times.
So when you go to a high end restaurant and the bill comes, you insist on going up to the counter to pay for the meal? You don't let the waiter/waitress take care of that?
@@cadd9511 that's one of the few times i will allow it, and if possible i will still watch the wait station if its nearby to see if the card is put into more than one machine. giving it to a gas station attendant in a third world country is a slightly different level of trust. i also generally check reviews on just about any business that i use these days, because many are resorting to shady business practices(no particularly gas stations, but we don't have attendants at stations around here).
Okay but this could have happened at a US gas station as well, and in fact, there was once a time where it was quite common to give the CC to the station attendant, that period being right after they stopped using carbon copy mechanical readers with a signature and moved to electronic. I mean at gas stations where they pump the gas for you, which isn't all that uncommon in areas where there are too many drive-offs if they don't.
I was just in Mexico this January and my family out there advised me not to use my card and only use cash. Credit cards frauds tend to happen to tourists.
