    Alex Gibbs - the God Father of Zone run - passed away last month. He said and wrote many times that, as a coach, you simply don't have the time needed to coach both zone and man blocking. However, after 25+ years of his scheme taking over football at all levels, professional linemen enter the league having learned his system since childhood in Pop Warner and High School.
    This allows teams to teach both concepts and implement them as needed.

    • @TylerDurden9LB
      @TylerDurden9LB 3 года назад +6

      I don't mind zone teams mixing in a little power gap. I think zone teams can sprinkle in power gap a little easier that power gap teams can sprinkle in zone effectively. But ultimately Alex Gibbs was no dummy when it comes to o-line play. You have to hang your hat on one or the other. I'd rather do one thing well than two things poorly.

    • @jacobmckenzie8793
      @jacobmckenzie8793 3 года назад +2

      Thank you for that, love this game. Rest his soul as well.

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither 3 года назад +5

      @@TylerDurden9LB - I agree. I coach amateur adults, and we are pure zone. We don't have time to mess with various gaps and pulls and traps and bucket steps and so forth. We practice zone steps left and right, closing elevator doors, communication (go go go!!! When you take over your block), zero counting the box to identify your man and so forth.
      However, at the professional level, you can see the value in having both.
      As true as it is to say "Do one thing well rather than two things poorly", if they know how to stop your zone scheme with that 6-1 front and the 4i technique in this video, then you will do nothing well and be sent home with an L until you show that you can adapt.
      We had a game in December 2017 where we took an early 21-0 lead and then the opposing team began to really adjust and get their act together. They gave us Bear fronts and didn't allow us to get our double teams. Thankfully, a couple of our guys played in a power scheme in high school and they were able to help me teach our guys on the fly the basic idea of down blocking and pulling a trapping guard to open a hole. We essentially told our guys to zone block left and the left guard to pull and hit the backside defender we normally leave unblocked. We told the HB to run it like a counter - take the hand off, then bend back and run behind your guard. It was improvised and looked it, but the defense wasn't ready and we burnt them for another score on the first try while they were over playing the zone left.
      Mixing that in a practicing it a little was good for us.

    That's a packer sweep or riggins counter tray. I don't know squat about football and I recognize that ancient play. It's in that movie where chuck Heston plays a little boys football coach in black and white. That one play made joe theisman a Superbowl winner. If you can run this play, throwing becomes a practice drill.

    • @45heisman
      @45heisman 3 года назад

      Well no. Those are the two guards one on either side of the center pulling out. This can be exploited in the NFL now days more easily since nose tackles are quicker than ever filling the vacated space of the play side guard. Or linebackers filling holes catching rbs in the backfield. The advantage of bringing both guys from the back is that the 3 play side lineman have much much easier blocks.

    • @mandelharvey3429
      @mandelharvey3429 3 года назад

      @@45heisman that's a counter tray. I have no idea what that word means in football. But it's a packer sweep. Those guys go that way. That's what I can see.
      I was in the marching band. I don't really know know football. I know enough football to recognize that play. That's the run version of a look in and go.
      You get a seal here. And seal here. And you run in the alley.
      It's the play that Andy Reid used to end Michael Vicks career. Night game vs the cowboys. They hit him so hard he is still punch drunk. No quarterback should run in the alley. Come to think of it, he ran that on the goal line with Donovan McNabb at the Panthers and they late him into retirement. And both times they were up 30 in the fourth quarter. Hope he doesn't do that with mahomes. I'm originally from Virginia. The Hogs with the diesel won a Superbowl running that play. My highschool had the third leading rusher in the state who played in the second half twice a year when the games were close. Then his little brother ran it to the top five rusher.
      I also know if I recognize a play, you must believe you have better athletes than the other team to execute because if I see it coming, everybody who knows football sees it coming. Look in, go, look in and go.

      2. Sending OBJ to the ONLY team that can stop you is risky. But OBJ at LT is someones the Ravens can exploit. He can't handle Oweh's or Houston's speed. This is actually kinda Trojan Horse like.

      Not really, while yes it was a problem, it could have been remedied. If you notice they ran scat protection literally the whole game. The issue was that Andy Reid stayed very static that whole game. You can't run scat, no matter what team, against that front 4 of Tampa. Mahomes didn't need much, one or two seconds of time would have sufficed, but they never switched off scat.

    He says we had a problem in the run game. And we do. And our patchwork o line failed miserably in the super bowl. But if you watched. When the bucs went into their cover 2 shell in the second half. We hit 2 straight runs for 42 yards to open the second half. The problem was Andy went back to the passing game right after which is what the cover 2 shell is built to prevent. If we wouldve kept up the ground attack it would've opened up opportunities in the passing game. But right after those 2 big runs. We immediately started throwing the ball and had to settle for a 52 yard field goal. Then the bucs drove right down and scored on the ensuing drive putting us down 28-9. Which forced the play calling to go pass heavy which is where Tampa's defense thrives. The o line was a MAJOR problem and has been for most of my time as a life long chiefs fan. But play calling had a lot to do with us getting away from the running game in the second half as I believe that was the adjustment. But because our defense can't stop a brown paper sack.. we got run out of the building cuz we couldn't throw the ball against a defense that is built to stop the pass in Tampa Bay

They just lost their starting running back to injury, they lost some solid defensive players, and they also lost their defensive coordinator. The 49ers should improve after an injury plagued year, and the Cardinals should be better, too. As for the Titans, I can’t believe in them until they show everyone that their defense has improved. The Chiefs offensive struggles early on this season and Mahomes inability to adjust has suggested the Chiefs O line overhaul was unsuccessful, however it couldn't be further from the truth.
    Firstly, their GCG combination has been the BEST in the NFL through 10 weeks. 2nd round pick Creed Humphrey is playing like the best center in the league and has the highest PFF grade of any center EVER. 6th round pick Trey Smith is not quite as consistent but he's still incredibly good, and is as powerful as any guard in the league. He has one or two highlight blocks a week, and is playing at an All-Pro level as well. And although in my opinion Joe Thuney is not worth the money they're paying him he's exactly as good as they thought he'd be. Technically sound veteran that is super consistent, All-Pro.
    Secondly, Orlando Brown Jr. is a good player but his skillset is vastly different than what they've had in an underweight super-athletic Eric Fisher. Brown almost never loses inside and rushers have all but given up trying to bull rush the mammoth, however he's susceptible to getting beat by speed to the outside. He's not as fleet of foot sideline to sideline as Fisher, and the Chiefs/Mahomes have struggled to adjust to maximize his skillset. Mahomes routinely overdrops to a depth of 9-10 yards making the rushing angles easier for speed rushers on the edge, and many times he looks to scramble outside instead of stepping up into a clean pocket and helping Brown regain that angle. It's caused some pressure on Mahomes from time-to-time and to the untrained eye it looks like Brown is getting beat, which is usually not the case. Furthermore the Chiefs call too many zone schemes requiring him to ride a defender(s) laterally and although he's OK at that he is an ELITE man-on-man power run blocker.
    Then we have RT which has been Remmers/Niang/Wylie. They all have their strengths/weaknesses, however they are all sub-par RT at this point in their careers. Remmers is a veteran who will lose less often but is susceptible to being bull-rushed, Niang is a road grader but once again struggles with speed and lateral agility, and Wylie is below average in all areas.
    So you've got:
    LT - Good
    LG - Great
    C - Elite
    RG - Great
    RT - Below average
    Additionally because of the attrition the Chiefs faced down the stretch last year you have depth behind each of these positions who have all played significant minutes in significant games. The depth is phenomenal, and it should be for as much attention Veach has put on the O line.

    My top 5 teams (yea Ik you said 3 but I couldn’t help myself) that can beat the chiefs in the Super Bowl:
    1) Bucs, pretty obvious why… they’ve already done it and it’s the same team with the same players and coach’s. They have a good shot at being a repeat winner.
    2) Bills, and josh Allen is why. Allen was incredible last year, him and Diggs are one of the scariest offensive duos in the league and along with a solid offense around him (run game could be better) I have no doubts that offense could score score enough points to win. However their defense is the question, last year the Bills defense was underwhelming after being a top 5 unit in 2019. I think if that defense steps it up and looks like the 2019 defense with top 5 Safety and ILB cores along with Tre White, all they need is the DL to step in and preform. If the defense takes It up a notch they can dethrone the chiefs in the AFC.
    3) Ravens, it’s can be lamars turn. After having a Stellar team offensively and defensively thier lack of post season success is disheartening. The new WR core, prospective RB and ILB, refreshed OL with Stanley returning, hopefully good edge play but Oweh and Houston along with the best CB tandem they don’t have many faults. This offense will be top 5 again, with Lamar at the helm there’s no questions about it, but on paper the defense is less than opposing aside from the CBs, Queen, and Campbell, but Martindale always finds a way to make this squad elite so with a great team and a few post season visits the ravens have a legit shot at a third ring.
    4) Rams, McvVay and Stafford. McVay knows offense, Stafford is a freakishly talented QB, these two could really stir up the game like Reid and Mahomes or Rodgers and LaFleur last season. The Rams have a solid offense, not many exceptional players along with the loss of Akers should only keep the offense average, and it was with Goff but Stafford is special. Although the last of any post season history by Stafford is non ideal I think it’s fine with McVay and Rams making a SB appearance. Plus we can expect the defense to play at a high level, you don’t have Jalen Ramsey and AD and not have a great defense. Although imo the defense will take a step back with Staley and John Johnson moving on from the Rams but like the ravens, they should be elite or great on both sides of the ball game and could win the SB.
    5) Here’s my wildcard, Steelers. You don’t have the best defense in football and a HOF QB and not make my list. The Steelers defense reminds me of the last 6 times they’ve won a Super Bowl, HOF qb with a defense that should scare any team. Imo it’s non arguable that the Steelers have the best DL in football, Heyward, Tuitt, and TJ probably only need to be the guys rushing the passer to make them #1, but Highsmith with an impressive rookie season, where he’s regarded as the second best rookie pass rusher from last seaos behind Young is promising for this already elite DL. With the addition of Schobert, thé ILB core is a top 5 unit, maybe top 3 depending on how busy recovers. And Minkah overhead with Haden at CB there aren’t many holes in this defense and I think the rest of the talent will more than make up for CB2 and SS, rightfully making them the best defense, as all as Butler doesn’t make them choke. Now offensively their are questions so let’s get out they have a great WR core and a very talented rookie RB. The OL has been completed rejuvenated with no starting player returning to the same position. I don’t have much worries for the IOL, Dotson was an all rookie guard and Trai is only two seasons removed from a pro bowl, Green at C has some worry but l focus on the tackles. Banner was supposed to be starting last year but injury kept him away and I don’t think he’s crack top 20 RT but I think he’d be serviceable, LT as Chuks has a lot of worry making me question the OL. But overall I think the unit will be better and I think they’d get better as the season progresses bc of the youth on the OL and a new OL coach who helped groom Dotson gives me optimism for the OL to produce. Now Ben Rothlesberger, the man many dismiss as the 19th best QB. Last year he had top 10 numbers, last year he had the worst run game and 29th best OL, and a moron at OC. He did amazing considering his situation, with a revamped OL, Najee and a new OC, I think Ben is more likely to be better in 2021 than 2020.
    That’s my top 5. Notable teams not on list: Packers, I don’t trust Rodgers to win NFC championship, not with Rams and Bucs in the convo. Titans, I love the offense, I’ve just don’t see the defense holding up to get them to win the SB. Browns, mainly lack of post season experience, I think they can make a playoff run but I don’t see baker and stefanksi getting a SB bc of the lack of post season history. Chargers, similar stance to browns, great team, herb might win MVP but I don’t like the lack on any post season experience. Hawks, I don’t love their team I think it’s just not good enough to be championship caliber. 49ers I think they’d got a shot, with a recent SB appearance, Kyle shanahan and overall good team they have a lot of things going for them but my issue is QB play, Garapollo had a great 2019 but I have a feeling it’s a one year wonder and if lance becomes the starter mid season I don’t trust a rookie qb to win the SB.

    Every where Alex Smith went running backs had career years the quarterback play has a lot to do with rb success. The qb chooses to put running back in good running plays and has the option to go from a pass play to run play depending on how the defence plays. Mahomes is good but he wants all the numbers to himself even at the expence of the team.

    The chiefs brought in some more offensive lineman that's cute that still ain't gonna help them if the meet the bucs again in the superbowl. And here's why Todd Bowles has become the only defensive coordinator to figure Patrick Overrated Mahomes out and if Todd Bowles follows that same gameplan i.e isolating Mahomes with a simple 4 man rush then the bucs are going to repeat as champions because newsflash the only weapon he got is his legs and if all the players on the bucs defense is in coverage and they just rush 4 then Mahomes is a sitting duck and he has nowhere to go. So, I'm pleading with Todd Bowles if this next year's superbowl is a rematch between the bucs and the chiefs please for the sake of humanity follow that same gameplan that won him his first superbowl ring as a coach.

      Andy will retire as the chiefs headcoach. But I do love all of you guys that quote tradition of the past as the way it will always be. Mahomes has broken so many traditions in his short career, that I love watching them fall.

      @@rustyreese4006 Has he really though? Has he broken more "traditions" than Russel Wilson? IMHO, his career is almost a perfect parallel to Wilson.
      I heard a great quote from Pat Kirwan years ago that went something like this "Every player is at their fastest the day they start in the NFL, and they get a little slower each season. But the defenses are always getting faster every year".
      Russel Wilson pretty much demonstrates that unfortunate fact.

      @@teekay_1 he has from my perspective. Keep in mind that KC hadn't had a playoff win for over twenty years, while being in the playoffs a lot. Mahomes also lead a come back from 24 points in the playoffs, also very rare. Also the comeback wins down by 10 or more points. Pretty much he took a team that had been drowning in mediocrity for 50 years, and turned it into a powerhouse.
      Wilson did the same thing for two years, but it went off the rails afterwards. KC may have the same problem, but it's not looking that way because of the talent they have been able to keep. Only time will tell, and I'm sure enjoying my teams rise out of mediocrity, so most of the traditions are team traditions. Just don't hate on me for being a homer. It's true, but I was also there in the eighties when they were just trash.

      Bills badly need a RB & decent TE right now they have some of the worst stables at both those positions in the league. Also need to try and move Ed Oliver and see if theres any improvement and really think he's only real chance at succeeding in the league is if he were traded to a team with a 3-4 defense and try him there cause he's been less than starter caliber depite draft hype fooling people and seems to be a tweener without the aggression needed to overcome his physical limitations at the position.

    the chiefs have a qb just coming out of his rookie contract. If Mahomes takes a smaller contract they may be able to stretch it a few years, but, that is a big if.

      @rustyreese4006 3 года назад

      Are you not aware that mahomes contract is designed for contingencies to be restructured to make room for signing other talent? People keep predicting that his contract will force the team to lose so much talent that they will not be able to compete. They already restructured to do what they did this off season because of the pandemic, and it looks like they are coming back better than last season. Maybe the rest of the top QB talent will be more willing to take deals that will make sure they have talent around them instead of deals like Russell Wilson that gutted his team. We'll see.

Andy reid is a fantastic coach but if he couldnt see this being an issue before the big game instead of the offseason he is slipping.

      Nah I don’t think that’s what he means

    • @dkoda840
      @dkoda840 3 года назад +7

      He means the Chiefs need to learn to run the ball and start playing smarter like they did against Buffalo, Pat Mahomes drops too deep in the pocket on every pass average like 10-12 yards and he screws over his o-line forcing so many negative plays, then has to rely on more deep balls to bail them out. That’s why the Bucs played 2 high against the chiefs 89% of the time, because Andy Reid and Mahomes refused to punish them underneath and keep just mindlessly throwing deep which will not work when the secondary is selling out to start deep and has a DB like SMB who is just as fast and polished as all your receivers. The chiefs may hit a lot of home runs but they strike out just enough to lose games that actually matter.
      This is a simplified summary of what goin on

    • @aidenthyer2769
      @aidenthyer2769 3 года назад +1

      He's saying Chiefs are going to tweak their run game so their passing offense can get back to being not only dangerous but efficient. You can't have a championship team based off of home run hits alone. The running game will open up their short passing and red zone offense if the tweaks work.

      @@dkoda840 Mahomes drops so far in the pocket because he’s had a below average interior o line since he’s started. When you have a bad iol, it’s not wise to stay in the pocket. Brady looked washed in 2019 with a similar situation. Mahomes may look like a different QB.

    • @dkoda840
      @dkoda840 3 года назад

      @@jamesfagan5694 Mahomes has ALWAYS dropped so far in the pocket, yes his line is below average but guess what dropping 12 yards deep only makes your below average o-line even worse. It gives ends an easy angles to blow you up, and guess what it kept happening and largely why Pat went from one of the harder QBs to sack in 2019-2020 to middle of the pack in 2020-2021. The angles he gives edge rushers is nearly a straight line, no offensive lineman even has a change in that situation. Speaking from personal experience. Mahomes is more comfortable further away from the line sure, so Andy Reid needs to retool his play calling to have this sort of situation come up less and less, or else he and the Chiefs will be threw.
