Mate, just wondering. What was your F stop when shooting with the 17-35. The 17-35mm lens is soft on the edges when shooting in 2.8 aperture and in 17mm. But any good photographer would never shoot this lens in 2.8 aperture for landscape and full-wide if you are trying to gain depth detail. If you bring that F stop higher and it will be sharp enough in 17mm. I'd only shoot 2.8 aperture in a portrait and you never put your subject in the edges. So for this lens to be soft on the edges is not a big deal and you must have been shooting with the wrong settings. I love this lens over the 16-35 f4, because having the 2.8 f is crucial in low lighting and works wonders for portraits.
good video Ben, if you had to choose between the 16-35mm & the 14-24mm what would you choose, bearing in mind what you said about the filter kit with the 14-24mm. thanks
glad you asked as I was just about to. I just purchased (pre ordered on 12/15/18 ) the wine country camera 150 mm holder kit with there polarizer , 2 stop hard & soft gnd , 3, 6, & 9 stop nd filters. not to many reviews on their blackstone filters but, I thought I would give them a go. they should be here on the 20th of this month. can't wait to try them out. I will come back here & let you know how they perform. that said , if I knew then what I know now I might have purchased the 16-35 instead because of the filter issue. no regrets though, I luv the 14-24. happy shooting!
Ben, I've owned the 17-35mm f2.8 for about 5 years now and love it! I picked up the new 16-80mm f2.8-4E with my new D500 and was looking up the weight specs of both when I came across your video my friend! I now use my 17-35mm as my go-to video lens for 4K training videos as the 17mm at f2.8 at iso 100 produces a high quality image with a nicely blurred background. Best, Rick!
I went for the 16-35 over the 17-35 also and it's been an excellent lens for landscape. I do however love the 14-24 and wouldn't be without it, I just don't use a filter kit with that one.
Now the additional option is the little advertised newly introduced 18 to 35mm 3.5 Nikkor, which is the vastly improved version of a prior lens. It's a plastic build, but optically a very strong alternative, and less costly.
Hi Ben! Great morning for a sunrise photo session. I am an amateur photographer always keen to learn with others experiences and I have a few quick questions may you might be able to address. 1.What type of metering mode did you use when you mentioned that you were compensation for -1? 2. That lens that you said you were keeping the 16-35mm F4, how does it cope with rain? I also like to do landscape photography in the UK and Scotland and rain is always to be expected even in summer days. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Ben. I love watching your videos. please keep them coming. i have a question: i'm looking for a wide angle zoom and i consider either a Nikon 16-35 f4 VR or Tamron 15-30 VC, i would mainly use it as a walking around, outdoor, low light and travel lens ( not so much on a tripod really), Nikon 16-35 f4 VR is tempting because it's quite a bit lighter and i can put a protective UV filter on it(i'm really worried about damaging the front element on the tamron when i'm hiking, and always keeping this huge lens cap on it is quite a bit of inconvenience i think for me).. Do you think this one stop of light extra on a tamron is a huge advantage for hand held use?? what are your general thoughts on this subject?? thank you
Thanks for the video Ben. Very helpful to follow your reasoning. I've got a series 5 DX camera but I think I'd rather go with one of the 16-35 or 18-35 even though I'd lose the autofocus. Your thoughts?
Nice timely video for me, thank you! I've been kicking around the idea of the 14-24mm or the 16-35mm lens. The issue I was thinking about is I didn't want to buy the filter kit for the 14-24mm lens.
I own the Nikon 17 to 35 28. I was considering switching over to the 16 to 35 F4, But one lens expert said since I’m shooting at F-16 to F 22 most of the time ,he thinks the quality should be about the same for both lenses because of diffraction. Do you agree with him? He suggested that I don’t switch.
Great vid, Ben have you thought about the Nisi 150mm system? I use this for my 14mm lens along with Lee 100mm system for my 24-70 lens. I find that the Nisi is a great system.
Just found your channel the other day I find your videos to be very informative. Thank you! As a Nikon user could you tell me what the image quality difference is between the Nikon 14 -24 f2.8 Nikon 16 - 35 f4 is please.
Found your videos a few days ago, really good. Picking up some great tips too! Going to try my hand at photography, been interested for a long time. Just seeing what camera would be best for me.
Thanks Nathan. Any basic DSLR will get you started. If you have a friend with a particular brand it can be good to get the same, they can help you with settings etc, and lend you a lens or two on outings to try out. Cheers, Ben
Great video, and a timely one as I'm just thinking about buying one of those very lenses. I sold my 14-24 as couldn't justify a filter kit just for one lens, and can interchange my Lee stuff with my 24-70, 70-200 and whichever of the 2 you compared I buy.
Excellent vid brother!! I also have the Nikkor 14-24 which is spectacular and used when filters are not essential to the desired image. When filters for wide shots are required I use my old but handy dandy Nikkor 20-35 F2.8 D. A bit limiting on the wide end but not enough to drive me to adding another lens to my collection. Divorce is expensive. By the way, would love to get that hat for my son, might you share where one could be purchased?? Cheers.
+Ben Fewtrell Thank you for the lead on the hat Ben!!! Just ordered it for my son Max, a huge fan of the Spitfire and the P40 War Hawk with the tiger shark teeth nose markings. He'll absolutely love it; thanks again for taking the time to respond it's greatly appreciated and please keep the informative vids coming!! Cheers my friend...
Just found your video, Nice to see that you shared all your valuable experiences with us. So many time I was in that place I wish could have met you there.
+Ben Fewtrell you are Welcome ! I have the same camera with the 16-35mm F4 lens I like sitting back on a chair using Qdslrdashboard on a iPad Pro to check my images on and Change setting if needed .....via Wifi with a Tplink Mr3040 with custom Firmware
Are you shooting with a DX or FX body? Makes a big difference. Also if you have FX with a lot of megapixels it's not a good match for the 17-35 either. 17-35 is a dream on a D700. The 16-35 is better with DX and/or higher megapixel FX models.
RUclips fed me an old video!! I got suspicious when you started talking about the ridiculously early sunrise. I learned about using the tree from Heide Smith. She lives in Nowra, has some photography books/books of photos. She's on Facebook, might make an interesting interviewee if you and she are welcome.
Nice Ben love your work. Really appreciate your personal insights and the tease info about Treys software for windows.... Sneaky... I hope this is the software 👍🐿️secret squirrel stuff.
Another great insight into the making of an image Ben, as an enthusiast photographer of only two years, I'm enjoying the technical side of your videos....... I've recently upgraded from my first DSLR a D5300 and I'm now using a D7200 with a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 with a Nisi V5 filter system and it's uploads like this that really make the difference how I approach a composition. Cheers mate
Thanks Dave! I am glad you're enjoying the vids. You're setup is great for Landscape Photography and the Tokina is a great lens, I started with that lens on my cropped D70 along time ago :D Cheers, Ben.
Hey Ben, great video once again! Your explanation of each step sure helps out allot. One question I had, though, and pardon the lack of knowledge; you mentioned shooting "A" priority, which means camera chooses shutter. So, if you are actually going into timed exposure (15 secs, 10 sec, etc.), wouldn't you be in full manual mode then? Or are you just shooting "A" with standard camera chosen shutter speeds? Thanks! One last question, is the rule of thumb with ND filters 3-Stop=Cloudy day, 6-8 stop= Sunny day? Cheers Mate
Ho Rob and thanks for the feedback. Usually, I shoot in 'A' mode and let the camera choose a shutter speed, with the ND filters, it depends on so many factors I don't think you can use a 'rule of thumb', cheers, Ben.
Not sure what you mean by depth. Colour accuracy is only really important if you're printing your work on a professional level. Most people don't even have their monitor calibrated so few just sharing your images online colour accuracy is a much less important aspect
Hi Ben, Great video, the 16-35 would be a great lens, assuming you have the lee system for it. But seeing as you have the Sw150 kit i'd get the 14-24 again, simply because you have the kit already, plus its a better lens than the other. Plus its great for nightphotography also at 2.8. You mentioned that lee don't do a big stopper. Lee make a big stopper and a super stopper for the 150. Cheers Adam
No Dramas, check out the Lee site, as they now make a super stopper and adapter rings for standard lenses. Cheers A P.S i don't work for Lee, but do use there gear, and the supper stopper is awesome, assuming you like really long exposures
Did you test this on another photos? I red review on www.opticallimits.com/nikon_ff/492-nikkor_afs_1635_4_ff?start=1, www.opticallimits.com/nikon_ff/672-nikkorafs173528ff?start=1, and there 17-35 has higher resolution than 16-35 at 17mm. It is contradictory to your result. I must buy 17-35 because it has aperture ring and I can use it on manual Nikon bodies :)
The 16 being a 4.0 and a G lens, with newer design and higher contrast looks sharper, naturally. Thanks for the comparision
Mate, just wondering. What was your F stop when shooting with the 17-35. The 17-35mm lens is soft on the edges when shooting in 2.8 aperture and in 17mm. Awesome Rick. I sold my 17-35mm as I wasn't using it. It was a great lens but I didnt need 3 UWA lenses.
I went for the 16-35 over the 17-35 also and it's been an excellent lens for landscape. I do however love the 14-24 and wouldn't be without it, I just don't use a filter kit with that one.
Yes, if only it was easier to use filters with the 14-24 - Cheers, Ben

Hi Vitor. I always use Matrix Metering for Landscape. As for the lens, i am sure it is weather resistant. Cheers Ben

Thanks for the comparison, have been thinking of 16-35. Helps the decision
Wonderful video. thank you Ben. However, Do you think that the 16-35 sharper than the fujinon 10-24 f4 ?
I haven't compared the two lenses side by side. I am planning too soon, keep a look out for it. Cheers Ben.
Thanks for the video Ben. Very helpful to follow your reasoning. I've got a series 5 DX camera but I think I'd rather go with one of the 16-35 or 18-35 even though I'd lose the autofocus. Your thoughts?
Gauranga Schleusener if your doing mainly landscape photography autofocus is not as big a priority.
Nice timely video for me, thank you! I've been kicking around the idea of the 14-24mm or the 16-35mm lens. The issue I was thinking about is I didn't want to buy the filter kit for the 14-24mm lens.

Both great lenses. The 16-35 has vr so if you are shooting hand he’d this can be a factor.
@@On3legs Thanks you. What made you choose the 16-35 F4 over the 16-35 2.8? I thought it was because it was shaper? Or stability control?
Great vid, Ben have you thought about the Nisi 150mm system? I use this for my 14mm lens along with Lee 100mm system for my 24-70 lens. I find that the Nisi is a great system.
Hay David. Funny enough I was looking at the Nisi system for my 77mm threaded lenses. Cheers, Ben.

Is that called Rushcutter Bay? Was honeymooning their in 2000. Sydney is incredible. Walked that park and the Opera House. Great video BTW

You're welcome Steve. If you can ever get your son to the Temora aviation museum they fly the spitfire on display days. It is awesome., Cheers, Ben

Brilliant video, great informative information..... I like your focus in AF and switch to Manual Focus tip...
ta Tim! Glad you liked the tip
have you heard of back button autofocus tho?
Have a look at B&H photo they do a big stopper for the 14-24 lens

Ben Fewtrell that's what I said!
Did you end up buying another 14-24 2.8 Nikon?
Yes, I bought another 14-24
Nice video and comparison of the two lenses.
Thanks!
Thanks, I'm looking to buy the 17 35. Heard it has an issue? But it's nice lens. Need help, is 500$ good for used 17 35?
Sounds like a reasonable price. The lens suffered from focus squeaking in the mechanics of the system but it never failed
Ben Fewtrell thank you. I've decided on the 16 35mm f4... happy shooting.
Nice Ben love your work. Really appreciate your personal insights and the tease info about Treys software for windows.... Sneaky... I hope this is the software 👍🐿️secret squirrel stuff.

Do you shoot at infinity at 16mm. Just traded a lens in for this new one, only paid £400 for the Nikon.
Dave Jones I usually focus about a third into my image.
Maybe the 16-35 is sharper all frame but what about colour accuracy and depth?
Not sure what you mean by depth. Colour accuracy is only really important if you're printing your work on a professional level. Most people don't even have their monitor calibrated so few just sharing your images online colour accuracy is a much less important aspect
How is sharpered in opened diafragm? 17 35 2.8 in 2.8 or 16 35 in f4?
Good tips Paul, thanks for sharing your experience. But too late i just ordered a 17-55 F2.8 , wish i found this vid before click bid .
where did you get the gizmo holding you phone in the hot shoe and what is it called
Hey Lance! its a Square Jellyfish - www.squarejellyfish.com and a hot shoe tripod mount thingy ;-)
