      This is a great idea. I think half the people stuffing their bags with kit would rethink if they actually used them.
      I started with all kinds of ideas then tried to break it down into sections (still too much crap) so I stepped back and went "what is this bag designed to do and for how long?"
      For me it's getting home and at most two nights out.
      Really skinned it down to water food and shelter.
      Also made it so it's part of my everyday carry. The bag is almost superfluous as most of the items get put in my pockets if I use it. Water and shelter in the bag.
      No fish kit, no huge amounts of anything.
      My BOB rig is different. If I have to use THAT then I am in a whole world of pain!! Remember: "Pain is your friend. It says 'you are still alive!' Learn to live with it!"

    • @rocirish76
      @rocirish76 5 лет назад +1

      Agreed. My primary issue, in fact my only issue with this bail out bag is a glaring lack of tools. Granted, with a sturdy fixed blade knife you can get away with not having a hatchet... but at the very least every bug out, bail out, get home, or INCH bag should have a multi tool and a blade that one can process firewood with.

    • @ssu7653
      @ssu7653 5 лет назад +2

      @@rocirish76 Why would those bags need any blade? Its supposed to supplement your EDC (that you by definision carry every day anyway), if you have a knife there you dont need more stored in your bag.
      This is just like he have ammo but no gun in the bag...

    • @rocirish76
      @rocirish76 5 лет назад +4

      @@ssu7653 primarily, because redundancy is never a bad thing when it comes to emergency preparations. A multitool and a fixed blade should be in every bag.
      A multitool and a folding blade should be a part of edc.
      The multitool on your person could get lost in a scuffle, accident, or evasion... the back up is in the bag, secure.
      And the folder is handy to have on your person at all times, but if you need to go to the bag for a blade, you may have bigger fish to fry than a folder can(or should) handle. I carry a karambit, but I'm going to use a fixed blade if I need to process wood for some reason, or need to cut my way through something.

    I always like to suggest wool clothing when possible due to the warm while wet and natural antibacterial properties of the material. On that note, I always thought having a nice pair of wool socks, and if space allows, hiking boots, or sneakers that you can comfortably put many miles in, is smart in any kit, particularly a get home bag. Because many people work in a professional setting and don’t always wear optimal footwear for walking. And on that note, Karl from a Tactical Rifleman made a good comment that close toed shoes are a must for all the women loved ones in our lives; because they especially are likely to be caught in distress wearing the most inclement shoes, heels, Sandler, or whatever form over function footwear.

      That does not apply if you live in the southern parts of the country.

    • @Jacob-ft3oz
      @Jacob-ft3oz 5 лет назад +8

      @@darrellbaxley9315 I have lived in the south my entire life. During the winters it rains constantly. If your cotton shirt, pants, or socks get wet they will NOT dry out without a fire. Cotton is hydrosorbic(I think that's the right word) so the fibers absorb the water and they actually pull more heat away from your body than they keep in. You are better off being naked than having wet cotton on. If there is even a slight chance you could get wet you do not need to carry cotton clothing. Some kind of synthetic or wool is all we ever carry when we go backpacking. Your feet are the first thing to get wet normally so we always carry wool socks and an extra pair so one pair can dry by the fire at night.

    Good stuff. Nice kit. One recommendation i suggest is having other food in addition to freeze dried. (Even just a couple protein bars). The reason for that being if u are short on water sources u will have to save the water u have for drinking. Leaving u with no food. I live in a desert environment so that issue is a likely problem for me. So i pack both freeze dried and ready to go food that requires no water. Something i think is worth considering.

    A few thoughts to address being stranded and remote. Reflector belt and mirror (old CD) to attract attention. And a wool or knit cap and neck gator (very versatile - love mine) to keep head warm. Also you need cords for that battery to actually plug in your device. The rest is for a trunk - extra dry boots stuffed with fresh socks, proper light weight blanket, wind up signal light and road reflectors. Some basic tools for road repairs, tow straps to get you out of a ditch, etc. But that's all car trunk oriented.

    Another fun video
    Remember to periodically check your gear
    After time batteries go bad. Also they can corrode in your flashlight making it impossible to remove the batteries. Maglites are notorious for making it impossible to remove leaking batteries.
    My blastmatch got corroded and the rod was no longer attached to the spring. I could still use the rod and a knife as a striker. I carry several modes to start a fire.
    Life boat food is compact.
    Replace your Tylenol and ibuprofen when they expire.
    If you take prescription drugs, carry a few days worth.
    As for water I prefer to carry packs of aquatabs or katadyn Micropur water purification tablets as they kill viruses as well as bacteria.
    Cheers

    While I don't have a bug out bag - I do hunt north of Old Town Maine. The warden service says that it could take weeks to find you in the wilderness up there if you get lost so we take our hunting survival kits seriously. One thing you might want to add is a spare set of socks. I can tell you that no matter how nice your footwear is, even if you have knee-high boots - if you have to march through the rain or a deep creek your socks are going to get wet and cause blisters. It will make you slow down and become less mobile. While lost in the woods - its good to stay still - but for a bug-out bag I'm guessing that you're going to want to keep moving.

    I do a lot of overnight and section hiking, so that's where this advice comes from. I'm like -0.5% operator.
    I would personally ditch the Life bottle (and I like their products) and replace the Sawyer bag and the bottle with two Smart Water bottles. They're a lighter setup. Use one as a "dirty" bottle and the other as a "clean" bottle.
    You can drink from the dirty bottle using a Sawyer Mini if you're in a hurry and transfer clean water to the "clean" bottle if you're not. They're also significantly more durable than those Sawyer bags. Plus, once you dump dirty water into that Life bottle, you've essentially negated the purpose of your Sawyer setup, since you can't really clean out that bottle well enough to not get the Hershey squirts in the field.
    Just my .2 cents. I really appreciated your setup. Party on, my dude.

    Good set up. I have the same bag and it is rock solid. As requested here are a couple recommendations.
    1: Thread all your zip ties onto one of the zip ties to make them more manageable and slim profile for one of your side pouches.
    2: if you have a radio and compass etc. Bring a notebook and pen.
    3: make a quick ready to go stake out set up so you can easily put your poncho over your hammock with a quick premade tie out kit. See Corporals Corner youtube vid for example.
    Other than that I've seen all the other vids of what you carry and you have a well layered kit system. Oh, and your personal skill set trumps most comments made about what you "should have". My suggestions are to make what you have more efficient. Your a good man John. Thanks for being an insightful and sometimes humorous part of this community. God bless you and your family.

    If I made 1 humble suggestion, not to dis on anyone, it would be to avoid the O-Light for explodey reasons.
    Small penlights from Streamlight or blem ModLights with rechargeable batteries are pretty decent for the price points.
    Also Magpul Daka pouches aren't half bad for water-proofing (technically water resistant) things, though they are heavier then sandwich bags.
    Some good stuff in there though! You gave me some great ideas.
    Also as a small fun fact, for those that have these bags, the same pocket that you use to stash the tail of the bag and expose the Molle in a permanent sense, is kind of a hidden compartment when not used in this way.
    For extra deep concealment you can stow certain thinner/smaller things in there.
    Even if your bag was being searched, the person probably wouldn't think/know to look in this area.
    You could probably fit your suppressed .22 without too much issue in a upright fashion.

    Consider your location. In a desert city you need a sillcock / 4 way / water key, a 2-3L water container and a head + shoulder cover - since staying hydrated and combating the heat are 100% your #1 priorities.
    When it’s high noon in the summer in Phoenix the heat will KILL you before you get home. Might sound dramatic, but if you don’t live here you won’t understand - and we always prepare for the worst right?

      I agree you need what but full body covering is far better than just head and shoulders covering. When to much skin is exposed the dry air robs your body of moisture. If you are fully clothed, your clothes soak up sweat and cool the skin. It may not feel like it but long sleeves actually helps. I also think you exaggerated a bit with the 120F comment. Other than that, I agree that water is critical.
