As you toured the neighborhood, I saw that you took notice of the churches. I was hoping you would pass one particular church and you did. Just as you were pointing out the second church, the old man distracted you to tell you he would love to follow you. That second church is a Seventh-day Adventist Church, which I thought would be significant to you. It is probably the oldest Black SDA congregation in New York City. Enjoy your New York City journey Dee!

Dee Harlem is wonderful. 7th Ave is wonderful, but Lenox Avenue in Harlem is where a lot if the central Harlem vibe is. There is SO much To Harlem and it is really huge and diverse. There are colleges, there, museums, 5 star restaurants, poets, musicians, scientists, doctors, lawyers, engineers, Artists of all kinds, etc. There's a rich, diverse culture there, always has been. I grew up there although I was born in Maryland. The layers of life there are incredible and it's the same way in Brooklyn. The Best boroughs of NYC is Harlem, thought it's a part of Manhattan, and Manhattan and Brooklyn. You have to live there to understand the unique vibe. It runs from 110th street to 155th street. Then there's the crosstowns from the west to the east side, riverside to the Hudson River. Go back and visit another to get a full experience.❤ And believe it or not, every block is different with its individual culture which blends as the whole of Harlem. The best places to eat in Harlem are along Lenox Avenue, up near convent avenue, specidic restaurrants, bistros and cafes where your food is cooked to order and you are served either at a table or take out.

Malcolm X 's birth name was Malcolm Little. His Muslim name was El - Hajj Malik el - Shabazz, hence the name of the market. He was an African - American revolutionary, Muslim Minister and Human Rights Activist who was a prominent figure doing the Civil Rights Movement in America. Like Nation of Islam followers, he considered his family name to be from white slaveholders so he changed it to 'X.' He was assassinated on February 21, 1965 while delivering a lecture in Washington Heights, New York.

Told you NY is hustle and Bustle but Dee I know you love Jamaician food but you need to at least try the local black food . Many Southerners has moved to NY and opened restaurants. When she asked do you like Southern Food that is soul food cooked by African Americans, we eat peas and rice called Hopping Johns, some of these recipes are handed down from our African ancetors, you would love it. And all ghettos are not the same in each country. And I can tell that the woman was not originally from NY she was so nice, and friendly, not to say all NY people are mean, and she is telling you the same thing we are be safe. and I promise she said it for a reason.
125th street is a major transportation artery and cultural hub that's been a center of African American culture since the early 20th century. You were on the West end the actual ghetto is East end. You are right to obey the pedesterian laws, do not walk against the traffic lights, you can be fined for jay walking if caught, smart girl. FYI/ East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, is rich with Puerto Rican history and popular eateries. West Harlem where you were offers quiet, tree-lined streets and picturesque parks. East Harlem has been the center for immigrants. East Harlem is both ghetto and affluent. All of Harlem is not ghetto, you were not in the ghetto.

The Dutch first settled in Harlem but during the civil rights movement a lot of blacks from the south migrated there. Southern food is a must when you’re in Harlem. The best Jamaican food is in Brooklyn, the Simpson’s Restaurant in particular downtown Brooklyn. Girl you have to come to Brooklyn.

Not sure what Market you were looking for, but they don't have a market per say in Harlem like you find in Jamaica, but you can get most things in the Supermarket or Sunday markets in certain parts of Manhattan that you have to research in advance, All the best. Glad you found the African Market wasn't aware of it, so I learned something. Don't forget to visit the Bronx and Mount Vernon, which is in the North Suburbs of Manhattan where they have a large Caribbean population that will love to meet you. Dee, before you go to New York City again, please do some research. There are dozens of places to visit and experience. I think that is something you don't seem to do. I noticed you passed a bike share. A lot of islands and countries don't have bike shares. You could have stopped and explained how it works. Maybe a quick visit inside the church for us to see the architecture, would be interesting. You have a wide audience. You need to stop limiting yourself. Big city blogging should be very educational.

Yes, that's true. Not everybody wants to see the grit and grime of life over and over, nor see another ghetto in another place. Good idea for her to seek out the variety that an environment/place offers. In other words, give us a balanced view.

Love the beautiful woman was so gracious and classy; a great representative of Harlem. So much culture and history in this city, very insulting to call it a ghetto and not to know the illustrious history. If you weren’t such a legend in your own mind, you might have more supporters to show you around 😅

Not sure why they would warn you not to go to Harlem?! Maybe they're thinking of the Harlem of the 60s n 70s. The prices of Condos and Brownstones in Harlem are ridiculously high and the demographic of the residents consist mostly of a completely diverse nationalities and mostly career folks. The narrative really needs to change
