As a Bengali who spent 16yrs in Bengaluru - this hit so close to home! I too had wrong perception when I landed way back when at KIA. But after 16yrs, I call the city my home. We may be languages and food apart but I have met some of the nicest people in the city. One of my very close kannadiga friend actually ended up marrying a Bengali girl and is now settled for last 5yrs in Kolkata. As a North Indian let me clarify you, we don't call it intentionally, we call it as it is swarn milap in Hindi. For example Rama as Ram, Krishna as Krishn, Kannada as kannad, Andhra as Andhr etc but not Kolkata as Kolkat, Agra as Agr or Vijaywada as Vijaywad.

Infact I find Kannada words similar to Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. But not similar Tamil and Telugu or Telugu and Malayalam words. Kannada also has an ancient version found to be as old as Tamil. I’ve had a North Indian completely deny Tamil is older than Sanskrit coz all the Shlokas chanted are in Sanskrit. And I told them not all of the shlokas are in Sanskrit but I actually was left confused after hearing what he had to say. I’ve seen research on Google saying both Kannada and Tamil are equally old. As a Bengali who spent 16yrs in Bengaluru - this hit so close to home! I too had wrong perception when I landed way back when at KIA. But after 16yrs, I call the city my home. We may be languages and food apart but I have met some of the nicest people in the city. One of my very close kannadiga friend actually ended up marrying a Bengali girl and is now settled for last 5yrs in Kolkata. Kannada literature is very rich and words used in our legendary Dr Rajkumar ( ANNAVARU ) movies are outstanding. in 1983 Ramakrishna hegde gave license to some 50 engineering colleges in Karnataka making educational hub for the entire India. Bengaluru is IAF Training HQ besides IT capital and ISRO HQ .. IISc , IIM are there in Bengaluru .. Infosys / Wipro / TCS / IBM / Accenture - all made Bengaluru as their base .
