Even ignoring speedrunning, there's something about it where the more you increase the difficulty of the game, the more valuable Chomper becomes. For example I playtested a PvZ1 mod that made the game a lot more difficult but otherwise kept the plant balance intact, and the combination of feeling the need to plant more sunflowers & armored zombies spawning more often than Instas recharges, actually made me spam Chomper unironically and it worked in some cases.
I do find it a bit annoying that the game both knows that people won't be using chomper, and also doesn't do much to convey how good they can be, even from a casual perspective. Quote from the tree of wisdom: "Chompers and Wall-nuts work exceedingly well together." Obviously trying to encourage players to work around the chewing time, but the thing is, *they don't work well together* at least, not in my expericance. A better piece of 'Chomper advice' they could've put on the tree of wisdom, in my opinion is something like: "You wanna know how I deal with the tougher zombies quick and easy? Emergency Chomper. They never see it coming..."
Funny thing is that chomper’s also really good in the console exclusive vs mode, despite having no changes. Because of how aggressive the mode is in high level play. Having someone who can take off most high health zombies with a 7 second recharge has it’s use, as well as being able to potentially use him as a deterrent to high health zombies due to the fast recharge. His viability is a matter of environment really, in aggressive environments like speedruns or versus mode are where he thrives due to the faster pace.
this reminds me of the three musketeers from clash royale, its not that these cards/plants are bad, but people just dont know how to use them efficiently and/or their playing style just don't really match up with the card/plant

I do think a lot of chompers hate comes from people incorrectly comparing it to plants like peashooter, Instead of plants like squash. It’s an instant that functions like a non instant. It’s cost is almost entirely made up for as soon as it kills it’s second zombie which is very possible in speeding since you’re usually keeping the zombies off the front line. It’s honestly still useful in casual as an instant you use closer to your line since it’ll deal with the stronger zombies for you
Squash is 50 and can kill 2 at once if they are close enough together Chompper costs 150. 1 v 1 chomper is worse than squash by a lot. It's only because you can spam him that makes him useful.
@@doomed89squash's recharge makes him pointless yo use unless there are gargantuars. And even then, just use a freeze to let your normal shooters kill them
In a casual setting, Scaredy is overshadowed to death by Puff. Yeah, 25 sun for a Peashooter is extremely good where it matters, but how about 0 sun? In a speedrun, you want to plant shooters to fill up lanes FAST. So, pick BOTH Scaredy and Puff. Puff being free makes the process way easier. Plant Puff on one lane, Scaredy on another, etc. Early game gets way faster. Same idea revolved around for Cactus' case, a plant thought *the* worst in PvZ. Cactus does work on Roof's low surface, so maybe take that with Peashooter and Cabbage for cheap and fast planting. The whole idea is to reduce time spent recharging.
I love your showing a casual perspective of why they would think Chomper is not their favorite. One thing to add that casuals don't consider chompers as instants.
Never realized Chomper got this much hate, it's a fun concept of a plant and It's really fun. I play casually and I always saw it as more cost effective than other instant plants because it's a recharging instant kill so I could save sun for other stuff. A lot of levels I had a front line of wallnuts with chompers behind them and that generally served me well enough.
i always play chomper. basically every level, i play chomper. everybody used to think i was stupid and just wasteful of sun, but then they watched me actually play and suddenly im a genius. its a great plant, and ive been training for speedrunning pvz because of it.
During my casual playthrough of PvZ, I always brought chomper because of its fast cooldown. The downside of it having a long attack cooldown is completely negated with the shovel. Just dig up the old chomper and place a new one!
Its mostly the fact that High health zombies don't appear often enough to the point you can't use any other small insta like Potato Mine or Squash And I doubt in a casual playthrough you spam Sunflowers So Chomper's cost becomes a problem Wasting 150 sun for 1 zombie that may not even be the one you want cause even if 2 zombies appear Chomper could eat the weaker one Thats why I think its not good High D tier at best for Casual cause It can work but its severely outclassed

I never understood why no liked Chomper. It got me through the game very easily. Two rows of Chompers is just an impenetrable wall. Cool to see it be good in speedrunning.
Chomper is funnily enough the most important plant in the flash version where you face off against giga football zombies in endless mode. They can tank 2 squashes or cherries but chomper still eats them in one go.

I stumbled across your videos right when I was replaying pvz, for the first time in many years. As a man who rarely plays any video games I don't understand the point of speedrunning a game that's a decade old, let alone competing in it, and yet I found your explanation of star plant very interesting. I tried using the strategy with 4 instant plants and a star plant on a roof level and my God how interesting it was! For that I am grateful!
One of my favourite casual strategies for adventure mode pool use to be to fill the land lanes with spikeweed, then the pool with chompers. I always felt that it was convenient for trying to get the ambush zombies out of the way quickly
I was surprised to see this in my recommended, I didn't know there was such a hate for the Chomper. I'm casual as ever, and I always like to use chompers whenever I can because of their cool down. I guess not everyone plants 2-3 full collumns of sunflowers as a minimum for one flag levels lmao.
I remember using 2 rows of chompers and just a bunch of garlics and ice shrooms for slowing down zombies with 1-2 rows of spikeweed if theres zambonis. Good times
I feel left out as a casual player who likes chomper, it can target zombies standing on the other side of a wallnut. That's bonkers, and basically marks them as a better alternative to the potato mine.
I feel like it's like Mag Grass in the sense that it's a direct conversion from sun to damage (like creeps20) has said. it's also like, idk, a fast-recharging instant with an upside, so it's not actually bad ...
Chomper is my favorite plant for this exact reason- he’s so unique that you have to play around him, either by changing his role (making him like a cherry bomb) or by changing your loadout to work with him
When I was younger and started playing this game for the first time I used chomper quite often actually even tho I wasn't speed running and he was actually quiet helpfull because I mostly the nut wall in front of him which really helps him out and since then I started loving chomper and using him more often even when not speedrunnig
Well for a long time like a couple of years I was into agreement that yes chomper is a bad plant but my heart changed and it's one of my favorite plants if not my favorite! Because I'm a fan of Sonic I'm also a fan of plants that make plants versus zombies go faster. Because usually Sonic is a platformer that takes around a minute to be to each act. And chomper helps make a 10-minute long level into a 2 minute long level
I had no idea so many people were down on chomper. Im a total casual but chomper was like THE central plant of my run through the game. Tbf i like to stall and use instas, so chomper fit perfectly for my playstyle
I just would add to this video about the way waves progress in PvZ 1 and 2 For the moment a zombie arrives, a certain timer starts and the next wave will arrive after that amount of time passes, OR if you depleted a certain percentage of the total amount of hp of the last wave that appeared. I unironically used chomper during both adventures all the time, to me, it was the most badass plant despite his flaws, and it's been my favorite ever since.
ok so this one time i was doing a pvz challenge (to try and upload something longer than 3 minutes) where i could only use instas and i straight up had to ban chomper halfway through because it was dealing with everything extremely efficiently. like two rows of chompers was pretty much an instant win and that definitely make me appreciate chomper more (then i had to scrap the video because i found out someone already had the same idea years ago)

casual players wouldn't be dunking on chomper though, i remember all those years ago when i first started playing pvz, chomper was really cool to me, i put chomper in a seed slot a lot.
I don't understand why people hate the chomper so much, because he's not an insta or a DPS option: he is a line holder. He helps to get rid of the tougher foes without stalling too long, especially guys like bucketheads and football zombies. Don't like having chomper being eaten? Place a wallnut infront of him, or even better, place another chomper behind a chomper and then throw a pumpkin at him for good measure. All things considered, Chomper is a great tool to lower the chances of your line defense failing. Also, you can use him with other instas, c'mon
I'm more of a casual player, never watched pvz speedrunning and know that while the eating time is slow, the recharge was fast so I went in and was like 'the eating time's going to be slow, but speedrunners use it as an insta for the recharge instead of a static defender, don't they' and was absolutely correct. Playing PvZ 2 in Neon Mixtape Tour has taught me about abusing what you can (Speaking of, I have an idea now I will use during the video)

How do chompers fit zombonies in their mouths? 😂😂😂
It's so stupid that this idea never crossed my mind as possible before I saw it in a video

Ive never care about chomper utility in a casual setting as it looks so damn cool
In simple term, when you focus on speed, the cooldown + instant kill alone make chomper better pick than plant that have sustainability.
I absolutely love chomper
"chomper is the worst plant PVZ"
As a wise menber of the jedi council would say:incorrect
I'm more of a casual player, never watched pvz speedrunning and know that while the eating time is slow, the recharge was fast so I went in and was like 'the eating time's going to be slow, but speedrunners use it as an insta for the recharge instead of a static defender, don't they' and was absolutely correct. Playing PvZ 2 in Neon Mixtape Tour has taught me about abusing what you can (Speaking of, I have an idea now I will use during the video)
I like to have 3-2 rows of sunflowers, some sort of pea shooter, sqash behind munchers. It broken
2:48 young fly on the track!
