- A lot of you have asked me to react to yet another new Arctic Monkeys song. This one is called "Body Paint". I've spoken at length about these guys already so let's react to this together. Tell me though, out of the this song and the last one, "There'd Better Be A Mirrorball" - which do you prefer? Do you even like this era of AM?

I thought that exact idea this weekend when I realized the whole album is full of songs MUCH better than Bond tunes, but could all work for those movies.
I read this just as Justin started playing his intro ... and suddenly his rising arpeggio leading up to "rides again" sounded as if it could be from the ultimate Bond. And hey, "He rides again".
The energy of whatever people say, the groove of favourite worst nightmare, the depth of humbug, the lightheartedness of suck it, the attitude of AM, the eccentricity of Tranquility base. It is really fascinating how they come up with a concept for an album and how they take it so seriously from the lyrics to the aesthetics. I am open for whatever arctic monkeys brings to the table.

Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets are now sort of morphing together, the common denominator of course being Alex Turner, and the result being spectacular. I think we are seeing a truly legendary contemporary artist evolving.

Tyler Parkford needs to be mentioned too. Look his stuff up, you can hear him in this recent stuff. Idk if he actually plays in/wrote any of this stuff or just at the concerts, but there's definitely influence.

Their latest work in my opinion really suits the personality of the entire band. Really can’t imagine anyone else pulling this off.
Also the first few lines of this song where he says,” For a master of deception and subterfuge, you’ve made yourself quite the bed to lie in.” is really clever wordplay.
It's a truly superb butI feel you also probably need to have the status of AM to pull off something like this in 2022,.
This encourages me to check it out. I tend to forget their last album ever came out at all. It never grew on me outside of the Single and She Looks like Fun is always good.
Totally disagree. It suits AT and none of the others. This should have been a side project. The other band members aren't being tested by this Jazz style at all. It's all about Alex.
Have you heard other bands talk about the change in direction. All seem to be really enjoying it
When I first heard Body paint it reminded me of Bowie singing Moonage Daydream. Beautiful lyrics, amazing vocals, brilliant music. Alex Turner is just so talented

The two outros have similar chord progressions! Not exactly the same, but similar enough
This whole album sounds like Bryan Ferry got to lay down some forgotten 'Dusty In Memphis' tracks with David Bowie & the whole thing was produced by Jarvis Cocker (à la 'This Is Hardcore'). 'Mirrorball' and 'Body Paint' especially. We continue to Jest Infinitely, all of us in on the joke, delivered with the wryest of smiles and sultriest of brooding glances into the old 60mm camera. Sublime.
I love their new stuff. Mirrorball was beautiful too.
This song blew me away - gotta admit though, i think the live version from Fallon is even better. I cannot wait to see them on tour!

AGREED. I saw the Fallon performance first and while the studio version's solid, they just crushed it in that gig.

Tranquility base hotel is genius and brilliant! I hated it initially but now it’s my favourite album. People who don’t get it need to listen and listen again. The tracks so far from the car seem like a further extension of hotel and I’m sure it will be another amazing album. Alex Turner is a truly brave and original artist.

Finally, someone who can coherently work sub-par 90s soap Eldorado into their music criticism. If the NME could do likewise their sales wouldn't be in the toilet.

@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain I can honestly say I never get sick but this was one kicked my butt. I thought it might be the flu as well. Started with allergies and ended up with sinus infection. Had a short fever for about an hour one night which made me really think it was the flu. I did take a covid test but it was negative. So I knew I could fight this one naturally. I figured Build up that immune system with out medication. I’m feeling way better now. Get some rest and pound some vitamin C pills.
There is brilliance at work when an artist can change their style like a chameleon, but you still know it's "that" band.
I'm so digging this new mood from Arctic Monkeys and so appreciate Justin covering and exposing me to new music. I swear, my biggest dream would be to go to a Justin band camp, where we listen to/discuss/play music together ❤️ So much to learn from this man!!

All of the early Bowie horn and string arrangements were done mostly by Mick Ronson (Spiders From Mars guitarist). He was a master. RIP Mick.

What an unexpected joy to find this channel, and this wonderful video, as a childhood (yes, childhood!) Darkness fan! Just a weird, serene pleasure to watch you chat and dissect the music and everything around it, with fun and intelligence.
I know a lot of people prefer their “older stuff” but I still think this song is amazing, can’t wait for the full album.
I’m so glad he never strayed away from his regional accent, cos too many singers stop singing in their accent when they get really popular
It's absolutely softer but then it would be considering he was so young when he moved. My mum moved from a village across from where the band started at a same age and she's not got the same accent as her family who didn't move
This song has a very “A Day in the Life” vibe to it, especially in the bridge.
CORRECTION: The only things Paul Buckmaster did with Bowie were two songs off Space Oddity record. The orchestral arrangements from 1970-1973 era (Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Aladdin) were scored by Bowie's lead guitarist at the time - MICK RONSON.
Tony Visconti (Bowie's producer) also did a lot of string arrangements. He did strings and production for TRex, too.
this band is aging like a fine wine. even the only album I don't like that much (AM) is really great. It's rare to find a band that changes so frequently and doesn't make anything bad. And specifically Body Paint is already one of my favorite Arctic Monekys' songs ever.
It’s funny that at 3:25 you talk about Alex and the band changing their look for each album, because the song is really about how Alex hides his real self behind the personas he creates for each album - they are the Body Paint. ❤

The music video really is a work of art full of hidden meanings and symbols and all round fantastic imagery that suits the vibe of both songs released so far. In my opinion they’re just stepping it up with every album conceptually and thematically - a lot of thought has clearly been put into the visual element here as it was on Tranquility Base - can’t wait for full album now!

Their new album, " The Car" is the best complete album I've heard this year, and I've never even been a true Arctic Monkeys fan. It's that damn good.
I absolutely love "Body Paint" - great lyrics, great song. Best thing they've done in a while. I'd compare it more to BOWIE than anything else, especially lyrically. Some great couplets in there.

Only just learning music theory, but I'm so interested in e.g. when you talked about the Bowie-esque string arrangement - I know intuitively that's reminiscent of Bowie but don't have enough music knowledge to understand the nitty gritty of the elements creating that kind of sound. If it interests you, I'd love a video on identifying what makes an artist's style so distinctive. I feel like there must be certain motifs that artists use to create a sound that's so distinctly theirs?

I think the Arctic Monkeys are a band worth investigation. I am familiar with some of their hits, but their albums sound like they will be interesting, and worth looking into.

You may say it’s a train wreck but other people think it’s even better. The beautiful (and smart) thing about it is it attracts new listeners which gives them a wider audience. You don’t have to like the music but you can simply just say it’s not your cup of tea
Listen to them in order and you might feel like I do that they’ve gotten progressively worse since the 2nd album till they shit the bed on base hotel.

I was liking Mirrorball more until I heard the live version of this where they go in at the latter end of the song where it breaks into a jam session. I think this album is a refining of the TBHS style.

Now I will admit when the car came out I wasn’t really the biggest fan of it and the vibe of the album. I was new to the arctic monkeys and was very much in my AM and favourite worst nightmare phase. But since seeing them live at the start of the year and seeing sculptures, mirrorball and body paint live, it’s fair to say that my The car (mustard deluxe as well) is my most used vinyl this year. Currently in my humbug and suck it and see phase and slowly creeping into my hotel base casino one. I love them so much and I swear there the only people I listen to happily, I skip every song on my playlist until I get to arctic monkey song and I own all there albums on vinyl. I swear there just so addicting to me for some reason
Alex turner wrote large parts of the string arrangements for this new album which were then edited by Bridget Samuels

love the era and mirrorball is my favorite for sure.
I was really sceptical about this band for so many years. I actually took more notice of them around Humbug but then was turned off by them over the next two albums. I actually genuinely enjoyed what I heard of Tranquillity Base but was then fully converted with the first single off this new album. When I knew Body Paint was about to be dropped I subsequently learnt how to play it and then uploaded right here on RUclips so I guess you could say the circle is now complete. I am finally converted 👌🏼
Reckon string arrangement will be Owen Pallet - him and Turner have worked together before on various projects!

I had read a lot of negative reviews about their new music but this is the first i've heard it too and i really enjoyed that, thanks. Have you ever done any videos about Volbeat? I recently got quite in to their music and really enjoy most of their stuff. Going to go and see them on their UK tour in December. For Evigt and Lola Montez probably my two favourites by them but theres loads more to choose from too!
Recorded their first album at Chapel in Lincolnshire. I was a tape op there but not during their or your sessions there.
When you "can't sing", you still sing better than 99% of the rest of us. Fab video altogether.
