Spot on brother! I'm an Italian that jars my own homegrown tomatoes, and I agree with your entire ranking, can by can. Red Pack is highly underated, best budget tomato that competes with the best. Asti San Marzano tomatoes are the best in my opinion. Great Video!
Hunt's San Marzano Style remind me a lot of the canned tomatoes my mom used to make. I was actually eating some with Celtic grey sea salt while watcing this. Not the best tomato for sauce, but I do enjoy eating them.
I thank you for your review on the canned peeled tomatoes. I have several large cans of the Cento San Marzano and organic Italian peeled tomatoes. I bought them because they are made right in Italy. I love the quality that comes with such a product. Can't beat the real deal label styling either.
Love the Cento. I have a friend in NJ that owns a Pizzeria. He told me that most of the Italian restaurants in the area use Cento. Not sure if it's true, but it's always been my favorite for making sauce.
6 in 1 tomatoes is the only way to go for canned that I discovered over 10 years ago. Unless you live near a pepe's you can buy their own sauce now. :)
I think my expectations were higher for the pastene given the price tag and my prior use of them. In terms of quality it's hard to defeat a good san Marzano. I have also used red pack products in pizzerias but never the whole peeled tomatoes. I recall being surprised by how good they were being a budget tomato lol. But there's no fix! no one sponsored this video (although thatd be cool in the future!), I have no horse in the race other than my fav is stanislaus whenever I make pizza! But thanks as always for watching and I very much always enjoy your comments and discussion!!!
The flaw in this experiment is that you cant really compare different types of tomatoes head to head. The only fair comparisons I did were hunts vs tuttoroso and San Marz vs San Marz! But it was fun and I learned quite a bit!
Red Pack for me! I read that Pavarotti would always make sure he had a case of it ordered before he came to the USA. Also Tutturoso and Red Pack are both made or packed by company called Sun Gold. Would be nice to have a challenge on Low Sodium tomatoes as there is a big market for low-sodium tomatoes, like Poma, Tutturoso, Hunts and Redpack, some of which I am familair with and use.
Love the video ! Thank you for the info! I live in a rural area with limited varieties at the grocery store. I appreciate the time you took and explaining for each brand. Next time I get to the “big city” lol....I have some new brands to try!
I've tried all of the above brands of tomatoes, because I've been making my own sauces for many years. Jim can back me on that, because we both have been making pizza sauce and blending different cheeses for many years. I have to agree with Jim, Hunts tomatoes would be last on my list, and I never liked Furmano's. Stanislaus Alta Cucina are by far my favorite tomatoes for pizza making or pasta sauce. Most of the pizzerias that make round pizza use extra heavy pizza sauce by a number of different company's including Stanislaus. They use the heavy pizza sauce because they add water to thin it out, along with their own mix os spices like sugar, garlic powder, oregano, etc. You have to realize most pizzerias buy #10 cans of heavy pizza sauce, which they add a substantial amount of water to thin it out, so their getting almost 2 cans of tomato product from one can.
I would say they are quite similar and i rate them very closely. Both California tomatoes that are naturally sweet, fresh tasting, vibrant, and just easy to love
Very fun comparison I’m going to make a sauce for lasagna today I already bought the cento so was glad to see you liked them other cooks have raved about these great video thanks
Redpack is the way to go for me. Great tomatoes and great price. If I want to spend more, I go with La Valle tomatoes and buy them when they're on sale. Sclafani is probably the worst tomatoes I've ever tried... I'll buy the store brand before Sclafani. Another great tomato is SMT brand. Out of New Jersey using Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio tomatoes... but on the expensive side. Great review. Next time, please review different brands of Passata in glass jars, not cans. Thank you.

Thanks for your review! How did the taste of the Cento San Marzano compare to the Stanislaus' Alta Cucina canned tomatoes? Serious Eats' 'A Preliminary Canned-Tomato Taste-Test' and with RUclips chef Jack Chaplin both top ranked the Alta Cucina tomatoes, but Serious Eats also top ranked the more readily available (at least in some markets) Trader Joe's.Plum Tomatoes (that was curiously dead last in The Kitchn's 'The Canned Tomato Taste Test: We Tried 9 Brands and Ranked Them' -- They also top ranked the Cento San Marzano.)
I'm going to check out chef Jack's video now! For me the stanislaus alta cucina are the better of the 2 tomatoes by a fairly wide main in terms of taste. Wherever I'm making pizza in any quantity for people and i want to showcase my best product, i use stanislaus. Not to say the cento is bad whatsoever, it's just my opinion is stanislaus is head and shoulders above the grocery brands featured in this video.

An interesting and informative test. And while I expected that you would be including "San Mazarno" tomatoes in your test I was kind of surprised that the "D.O.P. San Marzano" tomatoes weren't included. This latter type of tomato is actually grown in the San Marzano region of italy and, like wine, where a particular variety is grown has a significant influence on how it will taste. I'll be honest ... I've never tasted the actual D.O.P. San Marzano tomatoes - they're a little bit expensive. Four 28 oz. cans costs $22.89 USD and shipping is $72.99 currently on Amazon. Maybe one day I'll splurge. Thanks for posting.

Um, the Cento law suit? Fake San Marzanos - they’re Chinese in the cans and Cento won’t deny there’s Chinese tomatoes in their cans claiming they’re San Marzano. Curious if there’s late news on that.
I haven't seen any update. The only response I heard from Cento was they messaged me with their "tomato tracker" where you can see where the tomatoes came from. I haven't seen any further news or facts in that case. Please message me if you do!
Are San Marzano tomatoes the best? Allegedly, the San Marzano tomatoes used in many Italian tomato sauces are sought after by consumers for their meaty quality, low seed quantity, elongated shape, and low acidity. According to the Cento tomatoes class action lawsuit, Cento sells their certified San Marzano product for around twice the price of other tomatoes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “This fraud is abetted by the abundance of lower quality Chinese processed tomato products imported to Italy, more than any other country, to use in the finished tomato products,” the Cento canned tomatoes class action states.
