So, I commented on this video 6 years ago and I'm commenting again because this kind of musical genius is just timeless. He's got an otherworldly sense of timing and groovy way of phrasing that is so completely compelling. Simply amazing.
'Introspection' is just flat out one of the greatest instrumental guitar albums ever recorded. It has *everything* - taste, groove, tone, ridiculous chops...I taught guitar for 15 years and would always recommend it to any of my more advanced pupils.
That's so true!!! It has such a unique sound and style. The first album is also amazing! It is not only how good it sounds, but how really unique! Howe's sound!
This is a great example of his early playing-amazing phrasing, great timing, and unique ideas. Even at high speeds, he never loses that cool blues edge.
What amazes much so much is how he blends styles and melodies together, Some of that sounded so similar to jason Becker. I remember Jason said he was always a big fan of Greg howe. Its so outrageous how he can improvise so well
There were so many great players coming out in the 80s That I often overlooked or was just too busy listening to some guitarist and not others I'm so appreciative of you tube I can back track now and watch all of these virtuosos That I missed!!! Greg Howe is just amazing as it gets!! !
Just listen to how much more sophisticated Greg's playing is compared to 99.9 % of shred meisters. Just incredible. There's true knowledge and scholarship of musical genres going on. That's composition, that's great writing there. This is why we can still enjoy it after all these years. And he's still great.
Some guitar players are just mesmerizing to watch as much as to hear. Greg Howe just blows my mind and has always been massively creative, His fluidity is as good as it can possibly be.
Greg you know I absolutely love this from the old days... I don't even know was nominated that night.. but you stole the show bro...Hope all is good with you brother... Rodney Crider
Back then he did have his back called Howe2 with his brother Al..I was fortunate to see him a few times play out back then locally with his band as a cover band called Full Blues Jacket.AWESOME!!
There's going to be some very happy people who will be grateful to you for recommending Greg's Sunny, I envy those people who will listen to it for the first time with fresh ears.
If I'm going to listen to a lot of notes in the space of a short time , I want to hear them from this guy !!! ....or Eric Johnson 2 great guitar virtuoso's
If you look carefully at his guitar. It's not fingerprints adorning his guitar . The guitar he is using is the Marbled Fender Hm version. The rarier version. I have only seen a few of these for sale and that's over a 15 year period.
This really swings! A lot of guys can shred but few play as melodically as Greg Howe. If this leaves you wanting even more, check out his jamming on "Sunny" on you tube.
ahhhhhhhh now I understand the origin (or why) he did the pinky gliss up and down the neck to do a fake vibrato. it was just quicker and easier than pushing with the pinky while using the more classical hand position and faster than using the bar AND can give a wider pitch on higher strings than using the bar. I just never thought to do that when I was playing. Then again, I grew up on a farm devoid of culture. He went to GIT I guess.
@@ahmeduygun7320 yes, but not vibrato. That's why I said "fake" vibrato. It actually ISN'T vibrato. It's a fast up and down with discreet half step intervals. But it sounds a BIT like a very wide vibrato.
GOTDAMN! I've seen this several times before, been a while, but fuckin blows the mind still. I'd love to hear him talk in depth about this piece. Particularly if that Baroque-style breakdown in the middle of the track was Bach-inspired or how much inspiration he may have gotten from that. I guess this is just one piece that demo's the body of his technique and style. But damn, truly one of the greatest videos on this website of all, ever.
in regard to pentatonics...many intermediate players that dislike pentatonics never even bother to learn the 5 major shapes- they just learn the first "blues box" shape. then- they jump right into doing warp-speed yngwie arpeggios and fast "neoclassical" scale nonsense. it is sad really- pentatonic scales are FANTASTIC for phrasing. warp-speed arpeggios and scales are cool too if employed in a musical fashion. greg howe is a class act...amazing.
I totally agree, people just bypass the basics in favor of obscure techniques and scales. As long as they keep that mindset, they'll STAY intermediate, no matter what :)
@@ferrollg I remember when Howe first came on the scene here in L.A. in the 80s. He totally blew everyone's mind. Of all the Shrapnel players he's my favorite, followed by Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine. I love Howe's jazzy bebop sensibility. He does what so many players tried to do but didn't have the musical knowledge, imagination and ability to pull off.
he only gigged at GIT/MI (in LA). Greg grew up on the east coast and supposedly started his musical education by learning the first couple of Van Halen records by ear (old school: vinyl or cassette, idk). He may have also taken some lessons, but was already gigging clubs at a very early age. Most of what he learned was probably improvisation/experience and what he gleaned from fellow working musicians (much like Richie Kotzen - both are basically very talented and have a strong work ethic).
There are I think 2 releases of Howe2 I believe on Mike Varney label/Shrapnel..Greg is the best teacher one could ask for..His knowledge is incredible..
I like how the bass and drums are not over the top and leave room for his playing. Too many of the Shrapnel records were everyone on melt your face mode and I only have one face so after that gets melted its like shooting a dead body. But, if that's your thing I'm not criticizing just sayin what I like.
It's somewhat repetitive but the legato is Greg's strong point and the melody kills too! if your in the los angeles area check him out for lessons at ToneMerchants.I was a student of his for a short time but learned alot..

Time to remind you of this video good sir!
Exactly, Greg knows How to keep phrases and licks interesting without overdoing the speed thing.
So many notes, but they ALL have a melodic purpose and it always kills!!! there’s just no one like Greg imo 🙌🏽🎸🔥🎶💴
One of the greatest players of all time…GREG!!!

can you believe this is almost 30 years ago... greg howe was and is incredible, mucisians will be talking about him in 100 years, forever probably
I Jammed with Greg back in the 80's. HE went on to be the BEST!
One of the most, if not THE most complete guitarist. He can do it all, and accurately.
U are absolute right mvp there is no other
With paul.
After jason becker haha
Introspection=Masterpiece🔥💥
greg howe and guthrie govan were always my top guitarists and still are. i was fortunate to see greg howe perform with paul simon , it was SICK!!
He is literally 100 times better now, best an most fluid player of all time
Yes he is
And Guthrie? You can't say that.

One of the best pieces of music I've heard
As a middle aged white guy, this is one of my favorite guitar shreds/ solos ever...thanks Greg, and Pierce....
his very first shrapnel album blow my socks off amazing player, thanks pal.
Genius. This guy is a living legend.

Any time you think you are playing well come and listen to greg , brings you back to earth with a crunch ;)
used to see Greg play clubs here in Allentown PA back in the day. Still blows my mind.

Incredible... Incredible musician
this guy is the only player I've ever heard who is on a par with Jason Becker.... amazing!!
@King Brilliant agreed. There are thousands... Nowadays you can even find amazon tribes doing the sweep thing xD..jajj
I have that exact same guitar, same color. It's unreal hard to keep clean LOL
Glad I'm re-discovering Greg Howe's awesomeness. Thanks for uploading!
Otherworldly playing. Wow. Mind blowing skill.
His note selection is so mesmerizing to me...just really good
Beautifully intelligent, wonderful and creative
One of the most underrated and Best Guitarists in the World!!!
The most impressive note Greg played was at 4:49 no one could ever duplicate it
A hidden whammy pedal operated by his tech ;-)
some of the best ive ever heard
If I'm going to listen to a lot of notes in the space of a short time , I want to hear them from this guy !!! ....or Eric Johnson
2 great guitar virtuoso's
love those HM strats! Howe has just great technique and creativity too!
un super guitariste de folie !
Fantastic Greg Howe! Two hands down.
He is Flawless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have that exact same guitar from 1988, Fender HM Strat
Don't think that's Fender, cuz. Headstock looks wrong.
It is a Fender, look up what Stefan typed above, "Fender HM Strat"
mano a mano it's the strat,I have the same one in white
SpomenkoJabučar
Thank you; I wasn't familiar with that model.
I have 15 of them , the necks are incredible
Love you Greg Howe.. haven't jamed together in decades... How's your brother?....Rod

Shred Original... / From one of the BEST Original Shredders...
Wow, by todays standards that still shreds!
Agreed. I don't like blues or shred, but I love players like him and could listen to them solo all day.
thanks man im going to look up that band for sure
This has got to be among the top shred guitar instrumentals of time. It'd be a shame if we never found out what this piece is called.
Love you Greg brother.. Rocking Rod ..How many years have we jammed?
..1999?.. lol
And to think.... that was 88. Greg is one of those guys that can simply do what ever he want's on the guitar
@ET505 This was in 1988... There were no cell phone camera's. This was probably shot with, what was at the time, a pretty good camcorder
Must learn these licks !!
Can't imagine anyone playing much better than this but he actually playing even more better now...
love the hair & the guitar
pretty neat. i love his phrasing.. so dynamic
Awesome
Holy cr@p!!! I'm surprised the fretboard didn't burst into flames when he was finished!
🔥🔥🔥
love it all!!!

GREG HOWE IS JUST FRIKKEN SIIIIIIICK!!!
And he's always been a great guy too
Found this guy Vitalij Kuprij’s high definition album favorite guitar following Joe Stump and Michael Angelo Batio
it was just to much awesome for the camera to handle at the end LOL
Excellent !
Omg ,,,You are guitar god!!!

Greg is a fucking beast!!!
his style has changed so much in 20 years

you probably haven't seen Greg evolve his music has a lot of feeling check out his stuff from the late years.
So damn fluid and smooth, you’d swear those strings were wiped down with olive oil 👍
@ChangGang Agree 100%. He's very soulful and only turns on the gas appropriately.
