  • In the video I said "Deluxe" but it's a DeVille. Almost the same amp. The problem/fix also applies to the Hot Rod Deluxes.

This video helped me greatly with a HRD. Output was barely there and distorted. The output tube screen res. measured fine but I had no high voltage on the PI tube.
I did lift the board to better reach 82k. It and the 100k both were dead but no visible traces. I replaced them and voila....back to tonal Nirvana...yay!
I am ordering the solder wick that you showed on the video. I have never had great success with what I have.
Thanks for your content. First class work!

Thanks for pointing out those screen resistors and the way you saved time by putting the new ones on the top seems obvious but we do make things more difficult than they need be. Another excellent lesson.

I recently bought a messed up 2008 deville. Bad filter caps and a bad 6l6. 300 bucks Canadian. Threw in a set of suguang 6l6gcm and some cheap Supertech caps and it worked great. It had no burned areas suprisingly...
Then I removed the pcbs and put them in a cardboard box ... most satisfying..
I'm almost done building a 5f6a turret board with a JMPish channel..
Now to sell the pcbs and bever look back lol

Thank you for this very helpful video, I've just found exactly the same problem on my Blues Deluxe Reissue. V5 screen grid resistor blown. Pin 4 only showing .061 volts, pin 3 has 450 volts. V4 both pins 3 and 4 are 450 volts.

My Deville worked fine on clean channel but nothing on Drive/More channel the other day. Tracked down to a bad plate resistor on V2b. Replaced...all good.

I had the same series amp come by. After doing a cap job (literally exploded) the output was low and distorted. I plugged the speaker into the wrong output jack. A real doh! moment.

Fender probably puts paint on the bias pot to prevent it from shifting its resistance setpoint during shipment, gig transport, and from vibration when played. It would be better just to use a higher gravity, less flimsy pot. A 5-turn pot would be even better.

I wish I were closer, I would definitely give you my Fender Tweed Blues Junior IV to work on. It needed repair and it came back working, but its just not the same amp I had before.
If anyone knows a high quality tech in Fort Myers/Naples, let me know.

My Hakko desoldering GUN works great and it rarely clogs. The rework station with the hose running to the benchtop transformer and vacuum pump clogged up all the time. You kind of have to be careful with the Hakko gun. It can lift tabs off the board if you are not careful.

I also have a Hakko808 . . .works great and I do use solder braid of different widths since I use on some SMD's once in a while. Got a good deal on a set of SMD de-soldering tweezers.

Does the Deville and ML Deville have the same heat problems with components on the circuitboard as the Hot Rod Deluxe?

I had a problem with a pad on the board and no matter what I couldn't get my new 22ga wire to solder shinny. A solid and stranded sets of Amazon wire insulation melting off and then getting some wire from Antique Electronics solved the heat issue but not the tinning with non lead solder. Finally have the option of non lead for my new Epi mods and lead for old amp and vintage guitar repair by going with 20ga stranded heat resistant auto primary wire from Napa that is not tinned giving me the choice of non Kester or lead. Hope this helps somebody

I'm guessing that the Hot Rod Deville & Deluxe use the same board, and the 2 additional large electrolytic caps in the Deville are there as part of the additional 20 watts the Deville puts out?

I have never managed to get de-soldering braid to work. I must be using the wrong tip or something? Maybe a flat/square tip and not a round one? It just never seems to do anything regardless of how much heat I whack it with.

I had the same problem with de-soldering braid I bought off eBay. It just never worked. I then saw the same advice to buy good branded braid. I bought Chemtronics Chem-Wik and it works no problem.

In the absence of quality braid, dip your cheap stuff in flux and shake it off before applying it to a joint.
      Works well.

hi there all I use the Goot 3mm for most repairs it great plenty of flux i find it better than the chemtronics, and i agree dip the cheap stuff in liquid flux before use for good results,

Watching you go after that 82K in the back, and all I can think is . . . You need to head to the local surgical supply shop. Requires some very extreme long and twisty forceps. Actually, I think that a lot as I watch you reach for things that seem insanely out of reach. Surgical tools!

Get some cheap chinaium at Harbor Freight much cheaper than quality surgical grade forceps.
