12 Vintage Self-Care Rituals you NEED in your Life (your grandma will thank you!)
1.GETTING YOUR HAIR DONE
In the 1950s and 1960s, it was prevalent for women to go to the beauty salon at least once a week to get their hair done. Getting your hair set and washed as a form of self-care back then.
2.TAKE A SUNDAY DRIVE
I know taking a Sunday drive sounds stressful with traffic, but back in the day, it was considered an act of Self-care People used to plan a getaway for a day and drive out to the country to visit family or enjoy the changing scenery.
3.DEVELOP A Vintage SKINCARE ROUTINE
In the 1950s, women had an extensive beauty routine, including skincare. Cold cream was a common skincare staple and was used as a cleanser and makeup remover. Besame cosmetics has a good vintage-inspired skincare routine with cold cream.

4.FIND A CREATIVE HOBBY
Before the internet, Netflix and social media, people had to entertain themselves with creative hobbies like knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, painting and other vintage crafts.
5.Cooking for enjoyment
Everyone is so bust these days that most people don't take time to cook and meal prep. The idea of this being an act of self-care may seem foreign by today's standards, but in previous generations, people used to spend more time cooking at home and would rarely eat out. It can be rewarding to spend time cooking a healthy meal and as an act of self-care. It can be a therapy for the senses.
6.Take A Bath
Taking a bath for self-care has been considered a form of relaxation all the way back to the Romans in 300 A.D. The major benefits of taking baths are muscle relaxation with Epsom salts, giving you a sense of calm.
7.Read a vintage magazine
Reading a book or a magazine instead of a tablet can be a great way to relax and practice self-care. People used to sit down before bed in the evening instead of being glued to their phones or televisions. Flipping through a book or a magazine can be calming because of all the sensory elements.
8.Shopping in an actual store
Because of Covid, it can be hard to shop in an actual store, but some cities are opening up and have safety measures in place. Before online shopping was available, people used to go shopping as a form of self-care. It is nice because you don't have to wait to try things on and get instant satisfaction. I also love thrift shopping because you can find a lot of interesting this.
9.Go outside
When I was a kid, I spent most of my time outside, like in the films stand by me, Sandlot and Goonies. I would build tree forts with my brothers, go on bike rides and get into random trouble.
10.Make your bed every morning.
I am guilty of not making my bed and try to make it every morning because when I do, it makes me feel fresh when I hop back into it in the evening.
11.Sit down to eat breakfast.
People are eating sit-down breakfast less these days. But getting 15 minutes less sleep to clear your head with this morning ritual might actually be beneficial.
12.Paint your nails
I find it relaxing to spend a Sunday afternoon painting my nails while watching TV or reading a vintage magazine.

My sister had one of those hair dryers at home, hard to find these days.
My grandma used to own a hair salon she used to have one of the hair dryers in her room after she retired. She’d let me dry my hair under the chair it was always fun & go through her Avon samples to lol 😂 I miss her! My dad would take us on drives to Dairy Queen to get ice cream or we’d ride bikes to it. I miss my family.
That's such a great memory thanks for sharing! I miss my grandma too they were so classy!
@@tineshiabobbitt62 yes they were
Sweet that you had that time with her x
My mom is in her 70's, and she still goes to the salon every Saturday and gets her hair washed and styled for the week, and she still calls it the "beauty shop" 😊. When I was growing up, our family would go out for dinner and a drive most Sundays after church.
It would be cool if you did a video like, “living a day in the 50s” and vlog a day where you do things that people in the 50s would do. (Like even watching a vintage tv show like twilight zone or something)!
Love that idea! Thanks for the suggestion
Watch Ozzie and Harriet.
Ohh YES, that would be awesome!
You are naming all the self care stuff I experienced as a kid back in the 60's. I have photos of my mother in the salon back in 1966. The atmosphere was very relaxed and glamorous.
Also sewing was a popular pastime and we would collect patterns and sew some of our outfits that were in style and it was less expensive to make it ourselves. We also would collect charms from our travels and add it to our charm bracelet which basically was our bragging rights of all the places we visited.
My mom used to get her hair done once a week and wrap it with toilet paper at night to protect her hairdo. I remember Ponds cold cream and Jean Naté
Ponds cold cream STILL around, that and Nivea cold creams are the best 💖💖💖💖, so enjoy my love 😘
My grandmother LOVED Jean Natè.
I just bought a bottle of Jean Nate. It's so refreshing and it reminds me of my childhood
Omg! My mother was exactly the same! I can still remember her with that toilet paper halo!! 😄
My mother did the toilet paper around her beehive thing too. 🤣
In Dominican Republic is very common to go to the hair salon every week and get our nails painted often. It is almost traditional to get our hair rolled up and dried under a hooded dryer. That has been called Dominican hairstyling in NYC. Honestly, I think is the best way to do our hairs.
Your videos are so much fun to watch! Thank you for posting them!
Thanks for watching
I really enjoyed this one. I grew up taking Sunday drives. So much fun. Sunday is still my day to relax. Thrifting is my favorite or spending time in my garden when the weather is warm.
I love Sunday drives too
Yep going out to eat was rare and it used to be you’d go have ice cream on sundays after church. I do most of these. The hair dryer with the set is still very popular today in the black community. I have the hooded dryer in my home and it’s a great tool to invest in.
@Sunshine That huge hooded dryer had to be propped on a desk just right otherwise it would tip over + you had to get the exactly right chair height for it to be comfortable. Alternatively, there was that plastic cap with the hose in back to put over your curlers. It was more compact and it came in a gard plastic case. Ah, the memories
I remember my grandma went weekly for a wash and roller set for most of her life and loved her cold cream. When I was cosmetology school, there were so many older ladies who came in for a wash and a roller set in the school salon. Those were always fun to do.
Yes I kind of want to try it
Same!!! 90 % of my cosmo school clients were older women getting roller sets. They were adorable ladies. 🥰💜
Me too they would get a wash and set
My grandma did the same thing ! I think it's cute & wonderful !
I just discovered Jergens cold cream a few years ago and I feel so glamorous every time I use it
Me too 😃! I use the fragrance free formula because my skin is a little sensitive
I sooo wish I could for the glam but it breaks my skin out
Nivea all day for me
Sometimes I use Ponds!!
My favorite activity as a teenager late on Saturday afternoon was to soak in the tub with a face mask on and then wash my hair. Then set my hair and sit under a hood hair dryer and do my nails. All this before going out on a date on Saturday night.
I love cooking, it truly is self care😊💖💖 today's time is filled with 60 hour work week. that's literally so gross, most of our time is spent making money for companies instead of spending time with family/friends...
Right????
It's so nice to find like minded People. Absolutely adore this channel! ❤️
Eating out should be a treat.
Haha now I guess I have to buy that besame skincare! So pretty!!
lovely video, it was very relaxing actually :)
I will 100% be using some of these great tips. My grandma got her hair done weekly until pretty much the end of her life, it was such a staple for women of her time
When I was around 10 or so my neighborhood friends mom had a little hair salon in her basement. If she wasn't busy she would let us do our hair. So fun!!!!
I remember in the 1970s my mom had the hair dryer where when you turned it on the cap on your head got really big like a bubble. I always loved that.💈☺️
My Dad tracked down one for me!!... Lost in a move a few years back now...
Those were the portable ones right?
Perking a pot of coffee and chatting with a neighbor was popular with my mom when I was growing up...(70s)
Thank you as always, Laura for your wonderful videos. This one really reminded me how much the last year has taken a physical and mental toll on me. I am a nurse, and this reminded me how much i have neglected myself lately and need to get back into some big time self care!!!!
I hope you do!!! Thank you for all you do!! ❤
I use Ponds Cold Cream to remove my make up and then wash my face, tone and moisturize, and then put a small amount of vaseline on my palms, rub them together and then lightly press rhem over my face and neck. Works wonders. I also have always made my bed every day. My mother used to say, you're bed should be made unless you're in it.
What does the vaseline do? You don't use a moisturizer?
Thank you for creating such a feast for the eyes! Love all the vintage photographs, images, cosmetics, books and the like. You obviously put your heart into your projects and it shows!
Agree. Well said.
Oh, shopping is my favorite self-care! I hate that COVID makes shopping more complicated. But now I have new self-care ideas to do and I am excited to try. I love the 50s and 60s aesthetic so this will be really nice to try, thank you :)
I LOVE these! I do most of these regularly, I've always felt like a throwback! My Nanny would always say getting your hair done is a tonic! We need to look after ourselves and practice self care, we deserve it. ❤
I love that you have the Avon collector bubble baths. My family also took drives on Sunday when I was little. Have a wonderful day 🤗😘🌸
Great ideas! My mom would tell me stories of her childhood family road trips to Michigan. We used to do that every summer when my grandparents were alive. It’s fun just getting away from the city for a weekend while listening to the Walkman.
Never clicked on a RUclips notification so fast in my life ❤️
❤️❤️❤️
I love going for a drive. Especially since I live in the mountains. It’s so relaxing!
My family like to go on a Sunday drive to church but we have to get up early cause our Christian church starts at 10:30 and usually ends at like 12. So we usually do something afterwards but we will usually drive around and try out a restaurant that we haven’t been too. It’s really relaxing!
Thank you so much laura for make this video.😍😘💖👍
Thanks for watching
As soon as I got the notification i immediately clicked 😊!!
I love Laura’s videos when I get the notification. ☺️
What an original idea for a video! I love the vintage spin on self care. 💝
I use pond's cold cream and I just love it.
Me too it’s so good
It is but I prefer Laura’s vintage rose cold cream!☺️🧴
I tried Ponds but it made me break out. 😥
Awe yay thanks!!
I love Pond's. I also use their dry skin cream. It's so good for my very dry skin. Every time I try something else instead I always go back to it.
Great topic! Just a note that I found out to my horror a few months ago that most vintage hair dryers (and many other electric appliances of the time) contained ASBESTOS for its heat-resistant properties! And especially as they get older, they may be shedding asbestos fibers into the air as you use them!
You can look up more info on this online, but essentially any hair dryer made before they started banning asbestos in them and recalling them in the 1970s may contain the substance.
It was so disappointing for me as I really wanted a vintage soft bonnet dryer, but the risk isn't worth it. I'm looking into modern hard and soft bonnet dryers now, though the quality and esthetics aren't the same.
Omg I know I read that too!
Yikes! Thank you.
when your grandma was born in the 50s 😺😺
Haha my mom was born in the 50s
My grandmother was born in the 20s and I was born in the 90s
What a fun video Laura:)And you look especially lovely today🌹
Laura would like to see a blog on Maureen cox who married Ringo Starr.her fashion ,makeup and hair style.
I remember my Grandmas vintage hair salon❤️VO5 and pin curls. 🤗🤗
Those are all things that are relaxing and we can sure all need some of those!
This is so great. Love it
Your channel is a pure delight! A recent subscriber and I’ve been enjoying the content. Excellent programming and research
Thank you!
That dress is so nice on you and the COLORS suit you so well!
I want to be in those times right now
Hi Laura, all are absolutely excellent ideas! I will keep them in mind and I do believe they will help with relaxation.
My first marriage was very 1950’s; my husband went to work, I took care of the step kids, cooked all day, had a lovely dinner ready in the evening, and I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t the best at keeping the house super clean but we were very happy. It was a simpler time where it wasn’t all about money. My parents went out to dinner maybe 3-4x a year. That’s it.
Self care 🥰
Loved this one! I practice a lot of these
Thanks Sharon
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! 🌹
Love this video!! Great tips!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💚💚💚💚
I love all your videos ❤️ thank you 😊
I do most of these things weekly, but I make my bed every morning. I’m going to start improving my before sleep routine though
Yay I got excited for a new video !! ❤️❤️💕
I really enjoyed this video. 💖🤗
Loved this video! I cannot leave my house without making my bed. I sat on my deck today while my dog was outside. I was thinking about how relaxing it was to be outside breathing in fresh air - especially having to wear masks everywhere you go.
Can you do another video like this? This is my absolute favorite video of yours! 🌹
So did I when I was a kid. We went to a different place
And I loved it my older sister bought my niece and I some chiffon scarfs to wrap around our heads with
Big sunglasses 😎👄. One time we went to the Winchester Mystery House.
And we brought a picnic lunch.
Hi!!! My husband and I had to travel from Washington state to Kentucky and on our way we stopped at the Winchester Manor!! This was around 30 years ago!! It was so cool!!
I love all your vintage videos so much. Also I would love for you to do a vintage morning or night routine.
Awesome useful tips for present day
Hi I love your Chanel
One does not need different creams. Will only block your pores. I use E45 cream. E45 lotion mixed with water will do at night. I cleanse with coffee dregs 3 times a week. I'm 61, and my skin is radiat, wrinkle-free and smooth.
Thats a very healthy lifestyle
I already do many of these things, so happy to realize that. A vintage cookbook is some thing I’d never considered before though which I may need to try!
Would you do a video on Farah Fossett’s diet and or routine?
I have been researching her but I can’t find anything I will keep looking
Farrah Fawcett

Your videos are always fun 🎈
My skin is uber sensitive and oily so I only use Aveeno and Noxzema and cerave products on my skin.
Hi Laura! I really enjoyed this video! Thank you!

Laura, I recently discovered your channel and I love it! The knowledge and research that go into your videos is amazing. I especially love how you own many of these products, which I well remember my mom and my 2 sisters using! Your videos are like documentaries. Thank you very much.
Big Beautiful Cheeks 🤍🧚🏽♀️- whatta cool hair dryer
So people can live there life instead of watching other living their lives.
How gorgeous and fantastic, my grandmother use to do. 😊 I like all these ideas and I love doing them all. I do this when I get my hair coloured. I just love it and talking to the hair😅. I love a good pampering day with masks and face creams. 😊
Is that green hair dryer vintage? Or is there a link?😲💗
It’s vintage but I have seen them everywhere
@@Laurajaneatelier thank you! 🌹
WONDERFUL VIDEO
Actually, shouldn't we be thanking our grandmas?
I was born in 1981 and when I was little I remember my parents taking us out on Saturday's for a drive and we would go to different towns and go out to eat and shop. I had no idea this was a thing and commonly done back in the day.
A sunday drive, so many memories unlocked 😍
lovely video, please do a video on vintage book and magazine recommendations x
I think they should bring those days backbut were we can do thise thing
So fun to watch! Thank you!
smell of the book is the best hahahaha
I think you do a really good job on Peyton your own nails and I like the selection of your makeup and all of your stuff that you have you are awesome 👍🤗❤️
I try to read a book every night b4 bed instead of messing with my phone. Just 20 minutes to do so makes me feel a lot better- I sleep better too. It can be a magazine, a book on a topic u love (maybe something like interior design), or, for me, a good novel.
Yes! Everyone used to go out to Sunday drives just because...plus for some reason every one used to buy a new or used car every 2 years or so. No one kept the same car...plus women were super feminine then so I remember my mom, aunts and neighbors talking about make up and dresses for hours! Also families and friends would visit each other ALL the time...let's say we were driving by a friend's house, you were practically expected to drop by and visit...and this was in the city(San Franisco). These days you have to set up visits practically months ahead. No dropping in these days, that's for sure!
I still have one of those old hooded hair-driers in those typically 50ies blue and cream shades. And I paint my nails pillar-box red while having my hair-conditioning session every week, 'cause I keep a bottle-blonde 50ies hairstyle. It's all DIY, and sooo relaxing, sheer bliss.
I just started using Ponds moisturizer. It is amazing. It cleared up my dark spots on my face. I love this channel. These retro beauty products work.
