I think this is the best Polnareff song by a long shot. Back in time, in 1968, our french media didn't want to see it that way. They wanted to picture Polnareff as a buffon, the man who sang "Y'a qu'un ch'veu". Polnareff didn't like it. He didn't have the recognition he deserved and this song was quite ignored back in time. We could say the same about Nino Ferrer. Now, in 2021, Polnareff is a legend. We like to sing Le bal des Laze. He's one of our most beloved legends, along with Jacques Brel (who was belgian, but belgian people are our brothers), Georges Brassens and Jacques Dutronc.
This song, if you translate the lyrics, is REALLY dark. It's about a man in London who killed Lord and Lady de Laze's daughter Jane's boyfriend because of jealousy and the whole song is him looking back on the crime that he's about to be hanged for when tomorrow comes.
(who killed Grandma ?), a song about the time and the things we regret)
Arguably one of the best crafted French songs ever. Not a useless word, a captivating story line, and a brilliant combination of bass and organ, what’s not to love?
The movie is ''The Young Victoria'' with the beautiful Emily Blunt in 2009. The song is a french masterpiece in 1968. Strange but effective to marry this song and the pictures 40 years ago.
To me, easily one of the greatest french artists ever. So much talent and music intelligence. This is one of my favorite songs of him, but you can react to a lot from his discography !
The ball of the Laze I will be hanged tomorrow morning My life wasn't meant For the castles Everything happened on that June night There was a party given At the castle
In the Laze castle, The largest ball in London, Lord and Lady de Laze Were receiving the high society Diamonds, rubies, topazes And white long dresses. Hidden in the garden I was clenching my fists I was watching as they danced Jane and her fiancé
I will be hanged tomorrow at dawn That's a pity for the girl Of this castle As I think she liked the love That we were making, alone Far from the castle

Que cette époque me manque..
I'm late to the party, but here's my attempt at translating the song, being a native french speaker. I will be hung by the morning, my life wasn't made for the castles. All of this happened this night of June, a party was hold in the castle. In the castle of Laze, the greatest bal of London. Lord and lady of Laze, received the beautiful people. Diamond, Rubis, Topaz, and long white dresses. Hiding in the garden, my fists were clenching. As I saw them dancing, Jane and her Fiancée. I will be hung by daytime, alas for the girl of this castle. For I believe she quite like the love we were making in peace far from the castle. In the castle of Laze, for the 20 years of Jane, Lord and Lady of Laze had received the Queen. Me, the freak looked across, I died of all this anger. Hiding in the garden, my fists were clenching. As I saw them dancing, Jane and her Fiancée. I will be hung by the morning, it will be 4 lines long for the gazette. I'm nothing more than an assassin, unworthy vagabond of this castle. In the castle of Laze, maybe that Jane... As they will destroy me, will feel a shred of sadness. But my final sentence will be for all to mourn me, As they will gave her a brand new Fiancée... And I shall be unable to erase this one.
what I find extraordinary with this song is the power of transcription that is given. I mean, the music seems to be from the time, you could believe this ball of lazes existed. The words, scribbled in text by the assassin while awaiting his execution. This story seems taken from a real fact which one could have the impression, thanks to this chason, of having witnessed it. Im a french guy, i hope my translation is readable.

I amazed to have know that young English speaking guy, Dereck was interested in old French song of Michel Polnareff. What country are you from, Dereck ? I’m from Japan and Michel’s fan since long time ago 😊
Very good choice ! Thank you very much 😘 PS: dear dereck may I suggest you the French duo Âme strong and their song Tout est bleu ? Very good French song of the 90's.
Hi Dereck, first I wish to thank you for the great job you do reacting to french songs. Please , you must listen to one of the best and the most discreet french singer : William Sheller for example un homme heureux, pourquoi les gens qui s'aiment, un endroit pour vivre .
Parfaitement illustré avec le film The Young Victoria {2009}
My favorite song by Michel Polnareff definitely ! Thanks !
One of my favorite ones too, definitely, "mes regrets" is another song with that very emotional atmosphere, polnareff is a wonderful artist ❤️
me too
+1 masterpiece

Such a beautiful and haunting song... very good choice Dereck, thank you for your lovely reaction ! ;)

I like everything he does. He is so talented.
"Champagne" by J.Higelin is also a song related to a ball/party I.I.R.C.
Tu as raison.......
Lovely choice Dereck! Polnareff is a genius that's all.. Try "dans la maison vide" other song other rhythm and so creative!

The ball of the Laze
I will be hanged tomorrow morning
My life wasn't meant
For the castles
Everything happened on that June night
There was a party given
At the castle
In the Laze castle,
The largest ball in London,

Hidden in the garden
I was clenching my fists
I was watching as they danced
Jane and her fiancé
I will be hanged tomorrow at dawn
That's a pity for the girl
Of this castle
As I think she liked the love
That we were making, alone
Far from the castle
In the Laze castle
For Jane's twentieth birthday,
Lord and Lady de Laze
Had received the Queen
Me, the fool people stared at
I was seething with hate
Hidden in the garden
I was clenching my fists
I was watching as they danced
Jane and her fiancé
I will be hanged tomorrow morning
It will take up barely four lines
In the newspapers
I am just a common assassin
A vagrant unworthy
Of this castle
In the Laze castle,
Maybe that Jane
As they put me down
Will feel a little sorrow
But my last sentence
Will be to pity myself
Since she will be given
Another fiancé
And I won't be able
To eliminate that one

One of ours French Genius… exceptionnel pianist, great personality. Genius
I think the scene is from the film The Young Victoria with Emily Blunt, nothing to do with the song or the lyrics.
Exactly !
Very good choice ! This is art at its purest !

Wonderful choice of song. Hasn't anybody recommended Le Nouveau MOnde de William Sheller to you? I'm sure you would LOVE it!

Magnifique !
you should probably love Mylène Farmer who's singing Michel Polnareff' "La poupée qui fait non" :)
The best Polnareff song for me, by far ...love the darkness in it.
love this song so much
What is remarkable is that each song from Polnareff is different from each other… It’s like a little gem he spent a long time, I suppose, polishing…

Great song ! You have to do Petite Marie or À l'encre de tes yeux from Francis Cabrel, both are amazing
Magnifique musique du compositeur Michel Polnaref !

Hello Derek! I think his most insane song is "Dans la maison vide". Your bananas will adore it 😅
One of his masterpieces ! You should take a ear to "Grandis pas" from his last album in 2018, a song for his son, Louka 🥰
I love this song and the very sweet and beautiful music that comes with terrible lyrics.
It is a young man who tells his story who is about to be executed because he killed the fiancé of Jane, the young girl he loves. He was jealous and bursting with hatred to see them dance at the ball of Lazes, Jane's parents. And he will not be able to kill the future bridegroom because he will be hanged, unfortunately, from his point of view.
Words are often given a great place in French songs. And it's even better when the music is on the same level as the lyrics.
So elegant, so french
Noticed that you often don't read the entire lyrics.
Here : The fact that he regrets to die just because he will not be abble to kill the next one fiancé....
And also Brel "Dans le port d'Amsterdam" you stopped the lyrics just before the main whole delevery "They piss as I cry on the cheating women"
Guess you are afraid of YT issues. Please assume, there is a final delivery on a lot of french songs which changes the whole song taste. That's the point. If you remove this part it changes all the meaning of the lyrics.
Keep going.
I will start reading the entire set of lyrics, I started cutting back on that because of watchtime
I mean he reads the lyric when listening to the song he doesn't need to read it all to us if that's what you mean. We can just google it, but as long as he had read it it's fine I think
my prefered song from Polnareff, very haunting
Toutes ses chansons sans problème !!!!
I amazed to have know that young English speaking guy, Dereck was interested in old French song of Michel Polnareff. What country are you from, Dereck ? I’m from Japan and Michel’s fan since long time ago 😊

This is not the official music video, I don't think there is one. This is a montage from the movie about the young queen Victoria of england
Listen to the live version of 2007 with the electric guitar solo by Tony MacAlpine.
At last !!!!!!!!
Merci merci merci !!
Well done...
orgue Hammond B3 !!
Dereck, Holidays to Michel Polnareff is better

Salut dereck.
The video clip has nothing to do with the song. The song is from the seventies.
Try "lettre à France"....
He has, already
Maybe the only pop song with a church organ solo !
Dans le chaaaaaaateau !
Wanna take a Polnareff bullet in your heart ?
Try this one: ruclips.net/video/t6pCYrq8jo8/видео.html it's an OST theme, and a pretty short song, but damn that arrangement, and melody...
