OK Tips, so keep your engine number and quote it in any future orders. Beta should have put a test card in the box. After the engine is installed run all the tests on the card and tick them off send the card to Beta for your self-install guarantee. Paint the engine bay white with diesel and oil proof paint as it makes it easy to spot leaks in the future. Make sure to fully bleed the fuel line. you can draw the fuel through by taking the fuel line off the engine and use a little hand pump to get the fuel though the lines and primary filter, then connect the fuel line and use the lever on the fuel pump at the side of the engine to bleed the fuel to the injectors. Finally if the engine doesn't start after a few seconds cranking STOP. Check everything, try again with the water stopcock CLOSED. Cranking for an extended time with the coolant stopcock open can cause a waterlock. But soon as the engine fires and starts open the water stop cock. Good luck

We got our 20 year old beta with our boat. We quote our engine number every time we order parts. Beta keeps track of the parts attached to our engine. It helped us understand part changes the previous owner made. Still going strong after 20 years.

"Big Red" for the engine. R2D2 for the washer/dryer.
Also make sure that the washer/dryer has some rubber mounts to the hull because when it goes into a spin cycle with a load, there's going to be vibration because its not going to be perfectly balanced and might cause some hull problems with the fiberglass that you don't want.

Fuel filters mate. Get more fuel filters. They will be a must (dirty fuel is a killer of filters and it happens all the time).
At least 3-4 sets of replacement fuel filters. The first time you pick up some dirty fuel from some little marina you will be thankful. Filters aren't expensive and seem like a nothing part - until you dont have one. Running without one is a bad idea as dirty fuel destroys injector pumps and injectors (some of the more expensive components on your new engine).
Love your channel, love your work. Hope to meet you on the blue one day. All the best with the refit and and the best to you both.

I agree i have a Racor first then the Beta. You need a water separator filter before the lift pump and check it frequently for water and drain it when you see it. If you are using dyed fuel it’s easy to see the line between water and fuel.

Look if you fill your tank even the best filtered fuel will grow bacteria and absorb water from the air especially on or near the ocean. The last thing you need is fuel that’s gone bad getting into your injectors. So you filter it.

    New engine install..
    1. Remove drain and clean the fuel tank, or fit a new plastic one
    2. Get the alignment of the engine and shaft mocked up from the drawings so you know if you have to alter the engine bearers
    3. Get a Dial gauge indicator so you can align the coupling flanges
    4. As you have flexible mountings you need a flexible coupling for the shaft flange joint.
    5. Add a water separator to the diesel line
Those are the main points, I knew the guys who started Beta Marine and they and their successors have done a great job.

Matt, it's going to be a 7 on a scale of 10 for difficulty installing your motor. With your resourcefulness, you'll be fine. Make sure that you mount that engine well. I would always put electrical stuff higher. Including the transformer for the washing machine. A flood on a boat is frequent so protect the electronics. The gauge you called "pressure" is actually your temperature gauge. The "Hour Meter" which tells you running time on the engine is that little electronic display in the middle of your tachometer. That tells you running time on the engine so you can know that after (...) hours, change the oil. Green light on your control panel is indicating "Power On". On your Ignition switch, to the left is "Heat". That's for your "Glow plugs". They heat up your engine's cylinders before the initial start up when the engine is cold. Using those regularly on a cold engine is good for it. Tachometer indicates engine Revolutions Per Minutes (RPM). For the most part, diesel engines, 1,600 RPM or 3/4 or less of maximum RPM will get best fuel/engine life. The single most important thing of a diesel engine is heat, followed closely by maintenance. Follow the "break-in" procedures to the letter. Do not skimp out on cheap "breaking in" oil. Order it now and follow the hours of operation on your engine to change the oil from "break-in oil" to regular diesel engine oil. I wish I was there to help.I love fabricating as much as you do! Great video!

I'm so happy you got your new engine, Clifford the mighty dawg, and thought ahead for the extra parts. Could you install a higher Amp alternator to the engine to help you with power consumption? Led lights are cheap and hardly use any amperage. They would be great for the engine bay and other dark spots you might need to get to in an emergency.
Also fuel tank .. the bigger you can get to fit the better. Put those in first!! You got this Matt. Kirsten ..you are such a sweetheart. Have you thought of a stove? One last thing...
*IMPORTANT * Fire extinguishers are a must In any boat or motorhome. Please have them where they can be gotten to in an emergency. Love you both.

You asked about someone who did an engine swap by them self. I pulled out a 35 year old seized Volvo and replaced it with a Beta Marine. A good amount of the work was pretty simple. You already pulled the old engine so reverse it to get the new one in your engine compartment. The hardest part is getting the Beta lined up with your prop shaft. The height and angle of the engine MUST align with the shaft and make sure the shaft is centered in the tunnel. Perfection is required for this. Do not put the engine mounts into the ways until you know you have everything aligned as you might need shims under the mounts to get the angles right. READ and reread that part of Betas manual. Once you have it aligned drill one hole per mount while everything is in place. Put In the first lag screw or bolt recheck the alignment befor drilling the second hole as you still might need some slight adjustment. Don’t forget to use the flex coupling between the shaft and the transmission. Good luck. Reply if you have questions

Great choice on the engine fitted one in a classic wooden yacht 12 years ago in a refit replacement for a vintage volvo penta.
Basically a Kubota marinized by Betamarine but easy to get spares for worldwide from Kubota dealers and priced fairly unlike Volvo who gouge the back out of their customers.
Make sure you stick rigidly to the install instructions particularly the cooling and exhaust aspects the other most important part is the anti syphon install do not compromise in any way on this, it could ruin your engine if not done properly.
The last thing I would suggest is installing a flexible propshaft coupling this will take out a lot of the hassle in lining up the old prop shaft to the new engine gearbox.

  • @clayfarnet970

One suggestion, overheating is the biggest enemy of a diesel engine. You should consider installing an exhaust alarm system. The exhaust alarm will warn you of overheating before it harms your motor. She’s looking good guys. 👍👍👍

Matt and Kristen, I'm really happy for you guys. It'll be so much safer (and less nerve racking) when approaching mooring balls and docks. Your gonna love that washer!
One bit of advice. You need to pick up a water separator filter setup. They're less than $100. Put it between your tank and your engine filter. They're a spin-on filter with a water drain screw on the bottom. This'll save you having to change the engine filter so often. Also save you having to air bleed the system. You WILL buy dirty fuel eventually! And it's a lot easier to change that pre-filter a few times than it is to clean the tank!

15:05 Matt plugged in your washer and pushed the POWER button to wake it up and the washer's face flashed all the controls in Korean and I laughed out loud.
    My Korean washer story.
15 years ago, I took a job in Korea that included a studio apartment for me. I lived on a boat, and I like small spaces, so a studio apt suited me.
First weekend I put my dirties in the washer and closed the lid. Stared at all the controls in Korean. I could read Hangeul letters -- yes, Korean has letters and an alphabet and is ten thousand times easier than Japanese to read and ten times harder than Japanese to speak -- but I had no idea what the words meant. So I called my boss, the Director, for help.
    He said, "Wait."
    I waited.
He drove to my apt and joined me in the kitchen. Now the two of us stared at all the controls.
I asked, "Can you tell how to operate this machine?"
    "No."
The Director now called the Assistant Director. The AD said, "Wait."
    We waited.
The AD drove to my apt and joined us in the kitchen. It was now crowded in there. The three of us stated at all the controls.
Again I asked, "Can you tell how to operate this machine?"
    "No."
It turned out that Korean men do not do laundry. That is a Woman's Task. Seriously. Until they marry, Korean men take their laundry home to momma. After they marry, laundry is the wife's job. Men do not do laundry. Even dry cleaners employ women to do laundry.
AD called his wife. Lots of discussion. How much? About an hour's worth. AD turned the washer off, turned it on, poured powdered detergent in the machine, pushed buttons, and Voila! the machine started.
The AD pointed to one button, turned to me, and said, "This is Fuzzy Logic. Use this button only. Don't touch anything else."
From experience, I can tell you that Google translate will screw up some -- maybe all -- of the Korean phrases on your washer. I shall ask my Korean wife to translate those for you. Do you have Korean installed on your phones? On your computer? Why? So you can read the Hangeul and translations when I send them.

Plasteak decking is great stuff. I used their flat boards on my boats cap rail. As smooth as it feels dry, when wet, it grips great. No glue or paint sticks to it either, not even 5200. Your Beta will please you too. I put a 50 in my 30 foot trawler and it has been great. I envy your energy to get all this work done. I did this kind of work for years but at 72, I get tired just watching Matt work.

Pro tip. Do not try to directly connect your engine alternator directly to your solar batteries to charge them. Do some research and you will see why. You guys are great. I enjoy your videos.

Big improvement on your forward locker cabinetry. Upgrading that to something you can be proud of will make you feel better about the project for years to come and also will probably creak less than the separate slats.

Hi guys , in my opinion I think you should use lighters colors for the wall. Is a small space and it will look bigger and brighter with light colors.

On the washing machine go by the weight of the load. We Americans tend to underload washing machines. You can fill the machine to the top as long as you don't go over the weight limit. We also tend to use more detergent than needed.

Wow, that washer is cool. Our RV machine weighed a couple hundred pounds and was huge. The whole rig shook on spin. This machine looks like the same capacity and so much smaller. Clifford sounds so GBU. Thumbs up. Glad to see the doldrums are behind you.

One trick I learned years ago keep the paint dust of your a little bit; take a T-shirt for a head-covering (to keep the paint/grease/junk out of your hair) take a short-sleeve t-shirt and just put the neck over your face (vertically), and tie the sleeves around the back of your head, tuck the rest into the neck of your shirt.

Lighter colors make the space seem more open and reflect light better. A small area with dark walls will seem like a prison cell in short order.

Wow ! Red motor looks fantastic. Korean Washing machine cool, my wife is Korean , we have lots of Korean appliances, Koreans never peal the protective plastic off. You can be in a 5 year old car and they still have the plastic on the dash. Mount the electricary stuff in the driest place you have. The fake teak decking is ok in small amounts , not so sure about the vinyl laminate interior look. If you can find some real timber veneer it will give a professional look, with several coats of satin finish . Or just paint everything Uma style . All in all looking good and thanks for sharing all this.

Engine name suggestion. “Reba” or “Fancy” since it’s red and fits the boat good.
