I remember the 78 America. Ron Teufel trained occasionally at the same gym that my friends and I trained at. Very close but Tony deserved to win 🤙

Thanks for weighing in with those thoughts because there was a lot of controversy around it being a manufactured win for Tony, so good to know from someone who was more up close to the competitors. Tony's coming on this weekend to interview, so if you have any questions, please let me know

Seeing pictures of TONY on stage with Bertil fox and the "MYTH" SERGIO OLIVA, and Serge Nubret, that in itself says "GREATNESS".. AND HE STILL LOOKS GREAT...

Again, bravo. Love your videos. Tony is an underrated legend of the sport. He has had a tragic life indeed. The inner strength of the man far outweighs the outward appearance of his strength. An inspiration of a man. Thanks for bringing it to people’s attention.

      @@carvedouttastone Not as Good,
I admire the athletes just as Much as the dedication is the same,Just that the physiques aren’t as good ,They’re Bigger but lack the V Taper for the most part ( exceptions 0f course)
Also training isn’t as Fun,Everyone with ear buds and No getting along in the gym,Unity .
There’s a lot of info now I wish was there when I started ,The Magazinesand you covered this well ,Full of Propaganda, actually shocked at how early these Guys(Arnold etc ,Started steroids ant the amounts they took) I don’t think Reeve’s took any ,or minimal if he did.
I competed Naturally in the 80’s and really pushed the big weights to stay competitive which unfortunately harmed me with arthritis ,
But enjoy your channel and the coverage on the internet

    Great job once again, Shawn!
This video not only pays homage to a sensational old school bodybuilder, but has several motivational messages that we can all learn from and apply to our own lives!
I was always a big fan of the Jet-Man and loved his impressive mass-thetics!
I’ll never forget watching a free posing routine of Tony’s where he did a 3 stage lat spread. I thought he was done after stage 1, until he spread his lats a bit more. This looked outrageous, but he unbelievably spread them a 3rd time resembling an albatross fanning out it’s wings!!!
Tony was also a master poser, and was one of the first IFBB Pros to crank out his trademark, funky and artistic free posing routines to music.
Tony is still active on Insta and definitely worth following!
Thanks again, Shawn, for your efforts in keeping this incredible era of Bodybuilding alive!
    Mucho respect!!
    👍👌💪👊🤩🙏💙

I did a lot of driving this summer 2023 so bought Driven on Audible. I listened to it straight through and thought is was interesting though the book ending was a little anticlimactic. But it was more about his beginning and not past his first contest win. I think I will now check out the video you reviewed. I hope he is blessed with success. He seems like nice soft spoken person, not aggressive hard as. In contest he looks smaller but when you see him casual in tshirt and on street, he looked like a big strong tough young man, like a football running back or fullback.

That's great to hear mate and I thought it was interesting that Tony finished the book at that point. The film continues the story thankfully, but I wish they had fleshed the timeline out a bit more for us muscle heads who love to see the details. Thanks again for always chipping in with a comment

Great video. That Flex magazine is one of the first mags that I purchased and when I saw Tony's lats and how he trained em I was hooked to where my back was my best body part. So Why was he banned from the IFBB ? I thought I heard him say somewhere that it would have been revealed in the movie

He guest posed in a rival federation - Weider didn't like Tony much also by his account. Also he completed in the wbf so that wouldn't have helped his further standings

As far as I remember Tony still looked good in both WBF competitions which is far better than a number of them. A WBF retrospective would make a great video. At one time the best paid Bodybuilders in the world.

Someone mentioned an interview with Tony Pearson. That would be in the right direction. Perhaps getting Tom Platz on would be great. There has been a resurgence of interest in the 80s BB scene. I would think your audience would be similar to that of the Golden Era Bookworm. A collab would help you. His angle was more on vintage magazines and routines, whereas you are more intellectual, frank and consider political and historical context along with physiological factors which I love. As your country man said.
We are here because history happened.
      Clive James
      Nevertheless,
The person who writes for fools is always sure of a large audience.
      Arthur Schopenhauer,
I think there is a larger more thoughtful audience for your work.
I have learnt so much from your channel.Keep up the great work.

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  9 месяцев назад +1

@stind1299 love those quotes. Yes, will interview with Tony this weekend which would be good.
But no, will never collab or associate anything I do with Bookworm. Please don't construe what Im about to say as envy or sour grapes, but I started my channel in part because it was frustrating seeing the golden era topic being handled by money hungry jokes like that guy.
For example, that clip about Pumping Iron I scooped first to the community the other day? Homeboy uploaded the entire thing - no commentary or context - to his channel for bulk views.
I'm pretty sure that violates fair use. On a private Bodybuilding forum he was only ever spamming his shit and self promoting until the moderator said "enough is enough" and removed his spam posts
I can't stand these kind of DYEL nerds who've never hoisted a weight in their life, but instead cling to their muscle comic book collections pretending they know shit about Bodybuilding.
I'm not into people who resell the programs of past greats and slap their watermark on footage they didn't film or own.
This sport is bad enough without these dickheads adding their collective weight to this scam enterprise. GEBW can take his muscle comic collection and shove it up his untrained ass as far as I'm concerned.

Well said. I have said it before and will do so again. You are an artist and principled. Tom Platz was on his channel and the next thing was him disassociating himself from Team Platz. I don't know what happened but on the whole I regard Platz as a stand up guy. Your stuff is on another level and I for one appreciate your work.

Another great video. Although I would give Sam a few more years, if he doesn't compete then write him off as a twit.

    • @carvedouttastone
      @carvedouttastone  9 месяцев назад +2

Smart money's on him not even making it till when that happens. Jokes aside, the white guys who lean on the drugs hard during their formative years tend to spark and.fizzle relatively quickly. Longevity's not in the cards for this kid, whichever way you look at it. I don't believe he'll compete either. It's always gonna be "next year" "next year" and to use gear to maintain a look for social media - that's a twit in my books
