I learned many bulgarian dances as a young girl in Oregon, many years ago, and wish I could have seen these dances at that time. I wanted to go to Bulgaria then, and I still want to go today. in Bulgaria we relax with Greek dancing...Serbians have some good ones too but from the torlak areas...which are culturally of Bulgarian origin...Macedonia is ethnographically part of Bulgaria....so no...not really...ask anybody in those countries...and they will tell you who the best dancers are....

After the Russo - Turkish war in 1826/28, russian king signed a treaty with the sultan and extract his army back, leaving the bulgarian people in the hands of the just defeated turkish army and other tribes on contract with that army. Many bulgarians were seaking refugee from the angry army coming again, so they manage to leave everything they posessed and take their familyes and children and go across the Donabe river as the russian army was leaving. They formed cityes and small villages in Ukraine and Moldavia...many of them were from my region, at that time the most populated city in Bulgaria - Sliven and from Slivens area, there are also many people from other bulgarian cityes and villages as Yambol, Shumen, Stara Zagora and so on. Those people who dance like this are with bulgarian blood and they keep the traditions alive, they even named some villages after the villages they lived here in their homeland. Tvarditsa is 40km away from me, and im pretty sure in Moldavia or near the border in Ukraine there is city called Tvarditsa also.

Go to videos of Anatolian Romylia dances, the Hellenic populations that were rooted out of their ancestral villages due to war. You will see great differences. The women do not dance like this at all, and the zonaradiko here also is different. Actually this is a theatrical medley based on traditional dances, however it is not exactly the way the villagers danced it 100 years ago. There are a lot of Slavic influences here in the couples dancing and the womens dancing. This is a Soviet style of choreography that is quite prevalent in all dance troupes of the former USSR, a mishmash of "traditional" styles mixed together in ways that the ancient villagers would have never done

Actually this is a theatrical medley based on traditional dances, however it is not exactly the way the villagers danced it 100 years ago. There are a lot of Slavic influences here in the couples dancing and the womens dancing. This is a Soviet style of choreography that is quite prevalent in all dance troupes of the former USSR, a mishmash of "traditional" styles mixed together in ways that the ancient villagers would have never done
