Every morning I wake up and ask myself, is this the day someone pays Kofuzi to make a video or use a shoe and gets to preview his footage and/or thoughts before we get to see it
Best pair of running shoes I have ever owned. Easy on the ankles and knees and has the springy performance when running slow or fast. I highly recommend it.
Great review! You did a great job of never calling them ugly, but they are. Excellent breakdown of how the honeycombs work best at a certain speed for you. They expand at a certain tempo, which you felt you could match at a faster speed. That was an unexpected insight that I found very cool. I found you by way of Floris Gierman’s channel (the LA marathon) and I’ve really been enjoying your channel. Glad I got here before 100k, looks like that’ll be any day now. Congrats to you in advance
I’m a midfoot striker and just bought the monsters. I could definitely tell my calves were getting sore running in these. Makes since now that you’ve said that about forefoot strikers. I’m going to try them out a little longer, but may go back to my new balance 880s. The monster is sooo bouncy though. A lot of fun to walk around in too
I've always been kind of skeptical on these on cloud shoes and just on cloud shoes in general. For me personally they've never felt right on my feet. I've always had better fits with saucony And hoka
These new honeycomb shapes definitely have shades of the Reebok Energy Return System. But those were enclosed, softer and much smaller cells. And they didn’t have a plate or “speedboard”. All this to me makes me think the Ons are really built mainly for forefoot strikers. I’ve found I can only run in them if I change my gait to suit their shoes.
Love the "Americanised" in the description. I think the speed board is the problem for ON as they make the shoes very stiff, even if Helion is not that harsh. Yes, the Cloudtratus v1 was, from the design/execution perspective a much nicer shoe. But that is maybe not the main issue on running shoes.
JR from Runnergy here. Great review. Totally agree these have IMO the closes feel to the original ON Cloud feel from when it was an idea made from a garden hose. Very bouncy, yet not cushy. Note these are among the least stable shoes I have seen you run in your videos. Not for the over or even slight over pronator.
very nice video (as usual...).. about the Cloudmonster, I can safely say it's a very different shoe compared to what we use to see in the market in terms of super cushioned shoes.... for me it worked very well.. fast and comfortable, syable and light. I would say it is better than many models with carbon plate... that is only my humble opinion .
I'm always curious, do companies make shoes like this to work for heel or mid-foot runners? They always seem designed for heel runners, though you run with the mid-foot touching first, missing the heel out completely...
biggest issue with On shoes is the massive gaps in the soles. Everything gets stuck in them, have to stop and pick out large stones that get jammed in there.
It’s definitely a road shoe but they’ve redesigned the outsole since you may have had that experience. I’ve run 3 times in it including over gravelly surfaces and not gotten a single stone caught. Moreover, there are now other brands that have center groove cut-outs to save weight which could also have the same issue.
i had the cloudflow, the cloudtecs worked for me. they absorb the shock of my foot landing better than a slab of foam underneath. durability of the outsole sucks esp if like me your wear pattern is biased on the lateral side. other than this and the price range, they're great looking shoes.
Would these be any good for non runners? I love the way the Hoka feel but are FUGLY, and i'm not a runner, i wear for comfort. These at least look better than the Hokas.
Very nice review! I've purchased 2 Once in the past and wanted to try the Stratus before I saw the Monster. I am a heel sticker so might have to go to the Stratus. I have time until I start jogging after my knee surgery
They've basically remade the Mizuno Wave Prophecy using foam rather than rubber/plastic - still borrowed a lot of the theory from that shoe - a lot of manufacturers have borrowed wave plate tech from Mizuno.
Isnt it a huge disadvantage for ON that those holes in the midsole still add to the stack height? seems like in a 30mm heel, there might only be 20mm of foam roughly. so that means for equal shock absorption/energy return they have to add much higher height = more instability = more weight to counter act this instability
The upper part wraps over where the foot actually sits. It’s very stable-far more stable than shoes like the Invincible, More or NovaBlast. Stack height is not close to the most ubiquitous max cushion shoes.
Thanks for that first review! I got 2 questions: 1) does the Cloudmonster feel more comfortable/ is more cushioned than the Cloudstratus? 2) If you compare Nikes Alphafly with the Cloudmonster: which one is “softer”, feels more cushioned? I just listened to a podcast with Ashley P. and she described the Alphaflys as the On s used to be in my opinion (“feeling like running on clouds because of its cushioning) Cheers, sVeBu
I ran in the original 1st generation On cloudrun and for me they were the smoothest running shoes I'd ever had. The next generations went to different worse designs and eventually went to the current fashion oriented style and design. This latest version seems to finally going back to actual performance and less a fashion shoe.
I have a pair ON shoe before, the cloudflow. Have run almost 500km in it. Not to say not love it at all, but its not a great shoe. Just wonder with ON, they have lots of hole in midsole, but the weight still heavy. Maybe because of their foam cause all of the weight?
I've had a couple of different On shoes and thought it was just me struggling to understand the "cloud-tec" cushioning after coming from Nike Vaporflys and Hoka Rincons. Glad they're moving more towards the squishy side a bit more as even compared to some of my shorter distance shoes the clouds felt pretty hard on the forefoot in comparison to other shoes.
From what I understand someone came up with the idea of using pieces of garden hose and attaching it to a piece of plastic and that’s how on shoes came to be
@@marlinweekley51 that’s exactly why I stick to “normal” shoes. Not necessarily minimalist, but stuff that’s not stuffed with tech. The most tech I have in a shoe is the torsion system in the solarglide 5
I used to share your perspective on shoe tech. Tried plated shoes for the first time this year and the difference in performance for me was very real. Everyone’s different so I can’t say plated tech will benefit all runners. I also have the Nike Tempos and the combination of a plate with the air pods really works for me. Don’t mean to sound like a shoe ad but some of the latest shoe tech has taught this older dog some new tricks.
@kofuzi , do you suggest this shoe for bad knee runners? If not which is in your Opinion the best shoes to absorb the shocks for post meniscus trimmed runners?
I have two pairs of On Cloud and one pair of On Cloud X. I love them because I use them as multi-purpose shoes. I can wear them walking. I can wear them to the gym. I can wear them casually (because they're really good looking shoes.) I can't jog/run (due to a catastrophic motorcycle accident), but, if I could, I'd probably go with Hoka instead. Or maybe my NB 1080 v11.
@@kofuzigot that thanks. If you have to choose, for daily training, short to long runs, gym workouts, durability, comfort, bounch, and casual walks, which one is more superior?
My first pair on ON shoes squeeked like a dog toy every time I took a step so ON sent me a replacement pair which also squeaked. I have returned to Brooks as my running shoe brand.
@@slushpuppii I’m in France so I use French German and Spanish sites with sales, does that help you??? I recently picked up the Nike Invincible for €107 from Keller Sports. In Britain Eddbud does regular current bargain videos
I have not tested this shoe for standing and walking for 12+ hours, but I do think it's rather comfy for overall casual (or non-running) use. I'd also look at the cloudsratus, if you're looking for a running shoe for your non-running use case. I'd also look at On's other shoes specifically designed for casual (or non-running) use, such as the CloudAway and the Cloud 5 Terry (actual product names - I'm not making this up). running shoes, in general, can sometimes be a bit more snug in the toes, which is good for runners. but that may become fatiguing over the course of hours. my recommendation would be to go to a store that has On shoes and try them on.
On reminds me of the first pair of running shoes I splurged on many years ago - the Adidas Gigaride A3, which had a midsole made of hollow cylinders. While I don't remember how they performed, I do remember the discomfort of having rocks/pebbles getting lodged in those open cylinders 😳
Adidas and Reebok I believe had all kind of wacky mid soles like this nearly 20 years ago. Gimmicks and Trends change and come back around, still just as pointless 😂
How often it happens? I have used On shoes in long distance trail runs and yes it happens, but not that often to me. I used their first model (and only one) for years in trails and never was a big issue.
Time will tell, but all midsoles lose their bounce and support over time, whether it’s the gas-infused ones, the pebbly ones (Pebax)-even Nike’s most expensive shoes’ midsoles start creasing after the initial runs. I’ve been wearing ON Clouds as a casual shoe for years-mostly for walking and especially when traveling, but I sometimes do short runs in them on trips. By the time the outsole wears through completely the midsole still feels the same.
My Stratus didn't have a crack in one of the bubbles until 400 miles, other than that, the shoes still held up great - the spring on my Hokas was gone after a couple days - thought they wouldn't last (but they ended up going the distance of 500 miles). I'm 250 lbs... so put a bit of stress on shoes...
Hi, I wonder about your blue ring. Is it a tracker or just kind of a special ring? About ON: I am from Switzerland and I was the first owner of the first ON shoe (one model one color) and it's a pity you couldn't test the second generation models (like the Cloudrush) which are so different and better than anything else. That was the time Cloudtec made sense. i know why they had to move away from it (durability), but ON running isn't the same anymore. Apart from it I still believe the Speedboard is a great invention by them.
ON makes good shoes. When I started running and didn't know any better about form, the different types of shoes for different types of running, ON shoes were my choice.
Looking to replace my 1080v10s which i've been using my daily trainer. Love them but wanted to try a different brand. How does On's daily trainer compare to the Clifton?
Firmer but still bouncy due to the unique holes actually being a major factor in the cushion. I found the Clifton mushier but many people prefer that marshmallow kind of softness. You should just try it on in a store.
Noticed you are more of a fore foot runner. So you are not compressing the heel cells. Seen other videos of more heel strike, which gives a more overall compression of the cells. So maybe better suited to them
I tested out the Cloudflyer and disliked the speedboard. Cloudswift was a decent shoe, could actually feel the cloudtec working a bit. This one looks like it compresses even more which should make it interesting. Im still not fully on board with the On brand, but they seem to be making "steps" in the right direction.
I like ON. Yes, they are not as cushioned as other shoes, and that is what I like. I think of it as a shoe midway between minimalist and the giant cushions you get with Hoka. Somehow it feels like having huge platform shoes just takes away some of the sport imo. Also, I’ve beaten a few PR’s in ON’s Cloudflow and that is good in my book.
I have a pair and greatly dislike the holes in the side because rocks/mud are constantly getting in them and it's a pain to clean. On Cloud has a great marketing team...reminds me of Corona beer.
Good luck using those shoes in the Philippines 🇵🇭, especially when it rains. The asphalt in a lot of areas is substandard enough that loose pebbles abound frequently on paved roads, and could easily enter those small midsole gaps. Plus, given the wet season in the 🇵🇭, you'll never know what else will enter those small midsole holes 😳😬
@@kofuzi Hope to see you here in the Philippines 🇵🇭, @kofuzi 😀 Riding a jeepney here is an experience, especially in the provinces, where even the roofs are filled with people...The distances between towns proper are in a 10-15 mile range, hence the need to pack jeepneys with produce, items and humans. Ah, speaking of jeepneys, driving one is an even better experience 😉 You will appreciate auto technologies more (ex. - anti lock brakes, disk brakes power-assisted steering, parking sensors, automatic transmissions), when you get behind the wheel of a jeepney. As for urban running, the best place to do that is in the state university (University of the Philippines-Diliman)...The asphalt is of good build quality, the locals are friendly, and there's nearby snacks (ex. - fishballs, squidballs, young coconut juice straight from the fruit, soybean curd, etc.
@@kofuzi I currently run and walk in the mornings at the state university (University of the Philippines 🇵🇭), using an Adidas Ultraboost 21. So far I am enjoying the shoe, the midsole and outsole designs + materials answered my needs for cushioning and stability, since I am more of a heel-striker and have a tendency to underpronate. Plus, it's a great shoe to use when standing or walking for prolonged periods.
@@kofuzi looking forward to a visit ! Maybe for next years rock and roll marathon? Reached your post on ON , worn by the 2019 and current 2022 bad water champ (cloud X) Yoshihiko Ishikawa.
total gimmick. those "windows" gave ON a couple of issues, stability, durability, but they stuck to it. kudos to them. it's supposed to be their USP, so would be hard to abandon this design after a couple of years. i like the looks, but i'm just not ready to dish out that much money for "cloudtec". someone was overthinking outside the box, but finally they seem to get a runable shoe from that concept. oh and i hear they got a promising racing team coming up, so i'm intrigued what shoe will come alongside that.
I haven't worked in the service industry since 1999. but I think the grip could work in a kitchen situation where there are slip hazards. and it is quite comfortable for standing/walking. not sure if it comes in the triple black necessary for most restaurant situations tho
Friends don’t let friends run in on clouds. I ran in the Flyer and couldn’t go past a 5k with out my feet hurting. I did have big hope for this shoe but again I was very disappointed. I stick with my Endorphin Shift as a daily trainer, and have to continue to look for a 2nd daily trainer

Somehow it feels like having huge platform shoes just takes away some of the sport imo. Also, I’ve beaten a few PR’s in ON’s Cloudflow and that is good in my book.
"It's a trap!" :-)
I have a pair and greatly dislike the holes in the side because rocks/mud are constantly getting in them and it's a pain to clean. On Cloud has a great marketing team...reminds me of Corona beer.
I’ve never had any rocks in my On shoes
Love the honesty Kofuzi. No ON Cloud monster for me. I cannot get past the price point.
I've never been to the Philippines. I hope I can visit one day. I really want to ride a jeepney.
@@kofuzi Hope to see you here in the Philippines 🇵🇭, @kofuzi 😀
Riding a jeepney here is an experience, especially in the provinces, where even the roofs are filled with people...The distances between towns proper are in a 10-15 mile range, hence the need to pack jeepneys with produce, items and humans.
I have a Cloud X, a Cloud Hi, and Cloud ultra. Love em all. Hello from Manila. 😁
never ever again on running shoe for me. The outsole collects stones and these stones got stuck in the sole and makes running a pain.
total gimmick. those "windows" gave ON a couple of issues, stability, durability, but they stuck to it. kudos to them. it's supposed to be their USP, so would be hard to abandon this design after a couple of years. i like the looks, but i'm just not ready to dish out that much money for "cloudtec". someone was overthinking outside the box, but finally they seem to get a runable shoe from that concept. oh and i hear they got a promising racing team coming up, so i'm intrigued what shoe will come alongside that.
All is well until the first step in the mud
how do you keep track of the miles on every shoe? great vid like most of you videos had to subscribe!

@@kofuzi You're asking for way too much effort here. :)
Needs more arrowwwwws
Is this good for working in restaurants??
I haven't worked in the service industry since 1999. but I think the grip could work in a kitchen situation where there are slip hazards. and it is quite comfortable for standing/walking.
not sure if it comes in the triple black necessary for most restaurant situations tho
@@kofuzi thanks for your advice 👍
the looks reminds me of old adidas bounce.
You land quite far forward on your feet... you may not be getting the full compression of the shoe
shoes like this is a dog poo magnet :)
Just for content qualities sake, the mixing in the opening is a little off. Music is drowning out your voice. Great vid as always
The only time I wear a pair of clouds is to take out the trash or go to the grocery store. End of story
your landing on the pinky side of the front of your foot... why even wear a shoe shaped for heel striking when you clearly dont heel strike
Na i cant run in Ons, dunno what it is but it doesnt feel good. I rather feel the Ground. / Trail
kofuzi-san, could you please consider reviewing some barefoot shoes? always been wondering if they're legit or just scam...
yo!
