    @2:42 Very true about the punch-in effects! I'm starting to get a little tired of them using them almost everyday for a few weeks now. I wish they had a bit more adjustability outside of using the pitchbend or literally picking up the OP-XY to move the gyro hahaha

    • @MidlifeSynthesist

    NGL, that doesn't sound too shabby at all. And I agree that coming up with a bridge structure to make your loop into something that resembles a song is one of the harder things to pull off if you're not into music theory. OP-XY is nuts. The routing it offers for external FX pedals is something ive craved for years. You can send individual tracks to FX units and back in. You would need a laptop, clunky mixer, ton of wires and another clunky interface to do what this sleek unit does. Not forgetting the 'brain' aspect for musicality, all the synths, sampling etc etc....Anderton did a 2 hour video on this thing which barely scratched the surface....... Release of the year.

  • @DomDomPop
    @DomDomPop Месяц назад +8

    Yep, the Z has that kind of transposition, though I don’t know if the new brain is “smarter” than the old (I’d assume it is). It really is a neat feature, something I really like about the M8 as well, especially for chiptune. If you’ve already got a classic chiptune arpeggio-chord-approximation-thing going on, being able to pop the whole thing up or down so many semitones, or especially to transpose it to a whole new scale is such a convenient thing to have.
    My one gripe with the Z, and why I eventually used it as just a sequencer for other hardware, is that the synth engines and yeah, the punch-in effects became super obvious “this came from a Z” tells over time. The tape track never got old, but one of the ways that made the punch-in effects seem fresh is sequencing them as well with step components. IMO the step components + punch-in effects in combination is what makes the Z unique, and what made it stand out as a “super pocket operator” at the time. The XY gives you all that, plus big boy synth engines, generative sequencing, and a bunch of the reasons that I have an OXI-One, M8, and Deluge for as well? This is exactly what I wanted from an OP-Z 2.0
    On a side note, my favorite thing about your videos is that I’m not coming for an economics lesson or gripes and complaints in comparison to the rest of the market, I’m coming to watch someone who genuinely loves this stuff as much as I do have a good time enjoying themselves with the hardware and discovering those “wow” moments. We’ve already got a million dudes saying “it’s expensive har har” like they’ve never bought even a mid-tier instrument in their lives. Not a lot of guys bringing the “middle aged dude just loves this shit” energy. That’s what I’m here for. I get GAS watching you have GAS, in the most in-context way possible.

    OG OPZ owner. It's a big grown-up version of the OPZ with a much better form factor, great keys of course, better synths, and screen. I don't think there are any new "ideas" that weren't in the OPZ. Even the touted transposition track had an analogue in the OPZ. It's actually remarkable how *little* they changed from the OPZ's ideas.

    • @fiscaldisco5234

      Agreed but I’d also add that the form factor of the OPZ truly sucked hard. Interesting chord composition idea. Reminds me of those "arranger" keyboards that let you play auto-accompaniment with samba or waltz or other pre-canned beats. I do think that Field can be vastly improved, and I do appreciate that it has its own workflow. There are some features on Field I would like to have on XY, like a 30 second tape looper with tape effects to play alongside the sequencer, and I would totally swap the XY Epiano and Organ engines for the Field’s String or another engine. I am very tempted to look closer at Field but with XY I am more in need of a hardware sound design/sample MANGLER (waiting specifically for the Torso S-4 to get together.) really wish XY had a granular engine..

  • @PlantMusicLife
    @PlantMusicLife Месяц назад

    Old school OP-Z user here. Most of the functions are the same, with a few additional ones. For example, adding more pages to the track length so you can have 64 1/16th steps creates a lot more possibilities. It’s also nice to have a screen and not have to use an app, which may or may not work anymore in 10-20 years whereas the screen can be replaced if it goes out. The synth engines sound mostly the same but I haven’t had time to explore all of them. Sampling is way easier now, with the ability to record a sample onto each track instead of each sample track using a chopped single sample. I wish it was as easy to navigate as my OP-Z but getting the hang of that comes with time.
    Most importantly, I think it’s not only a great instrument but a beautiful piece of design and well worth the cost, if that sort of thing is important to you. Anything that’s fun to learn and play is a good musical instrument.

    Although they’re not the same thing, this “brain” reminds me of the feature on the Polyend Synth where one of the three available synths is the “leader” and the other two are “followers”. It allows for the music to go down some paths that I never would have found on my own. It’s these kind of discoveries that makes sequencers and groove boxes so much fun to play with

  • @samprock
    @samprock Месяц назад +9

    You caught main points resonating with me: I want to play a beautiful instrument.
    I’m OP-Z from day one, XY is next incarnation fixing or improving experience, incl screen. I used screen with phone but it’s not always practical. Seeying Brain work at screen may help to understand and use it more, even OP-Z had transpose track.
    Punch-in FX like DJ style tricks has zero value for me. Having said that, exploiting those for making twangs, sweeps, and twists, for your synth sound and recording those in micro dosage into the track, has huge value. Making things alive and interesting is everything at least for my electronic music. Same differentiator was there for me on OP-Z.
    Coincidently I buy my XY today, they start showing up at stores after holidays. OP-XY fully justifies the price for me personally. Only fool would argue it’s nothing, of course it’s a large sum of money. Have to sell smthg, plan, rethink your next gear plans, but must have for me.

      Hi! That’s a great question and sort of a hot topic. The answer might depend more in what sample you use. If you mean a one shot drum sample, probably no. But if you so happen to make the exact same sequence with the exact same samples that another artist uses and he uploads before you, technically he might be able to claim it. Frankly, for 99% of us that won’t be a problem as the probability of that happening is pretty small and I suspect most people in this space are making music cause they love it and not to make a living out if it. Hope that helps!

    I think the punch-in FX in a SP-404 context might get boring over time, but you can use it in a more subtle way to add variation to a single instrument or perc/melodic group. And you can sequence it, in multiple different scenes! Also, since the stock drum kits follow a pattern in how the type of drum sounds are placed, you can play around with your own drum kits to create new types of punch-in patterns. Ramp up doesn't have to be a kick, snare, tom fill if you replace those samples with other sounds. Every time I think of a feature on the XY, how it works and how you can bend it, it blows my mind. My prediction is that the XY will far surpass the impact the OG OP-1 had. And the OP-1 had a pretty huge impact.

    I don’t intend to sound mean, but most hardware boxes have a scales mode… for a few hundred bucks get a circuit tracks and use the scale and key function. You can easily arrange on it…plus send it external to other midi gear. Mc 101 and 707 same. Mpc and machine also have scales and chords mode. On the Mpc you can even supply midi chord progressions you like and save them… recall them and transpose and play them on individual pads.

    • @MidlifeSynthesist
      @MidlifeSynthesist  Месяц назад

      Hello my friend! I’ve used a few of those boxes (MPC is one of my all time favorites) and though they indeed have chord/scales modes, when I’ve used them in this way (live transposing of multiple tracks and sequences into different modes/scales) the results have usually been very unpredictable or even unusable. I want to compare this eventually with my MPC so I’d love to check out if maybe there’s something I’m missing with it’s ability to do live scale changes and sequence transpositions. Do you know of any videos showing that being done in Mpc and hopefully explaining it so I can try it out? Could you maybe leave me a link to check it out? I’d truly appreciate it🙌🏻 lots of love!

    • @dracul74
      @dracul74 Месяц назад

      most composed music doesn’t change scale and sound natural unless you are doing the scale change using a few notes that are common to both scales (e.g intermingle 2 scales both that have the chords of Cm). That said, I know on the Roland they have a transpose clip setting which is super easy. On the Mpc I would simply use the progression feature to flip the scale and key how you like while recording or some prefer to keep it easy and resample the section to a combined sample that they transpose and effect (filter pass) for a bridge or alt sequence. On Circuit Tracks I would just tie short clips with key changes… as it easy very easy to program.

    It's a great device; I can't think of anything else like it in this form factor (no, Deluge doesn't cut it). I'd not ignore punch in fx, start sequencing them and combining with tape, yu can get a really interesting, unique sounds. Brain, well, it's for people who don't know music theory. Useful shortcut that speeds up workflow, but nothing magic and it gets confused with more complex scales/chords. For me, it's a gimmick, but I can see the appeal. By the way try linking a track to lead it, it's quite fun.
    Many early 2000s arrangers and workstations had similar/better transpose abilities. Right now, off the top of my head, Squarp Hapax can do this (and more-it can transpose to any chord, and it's a great sequencer, by the way).
    OP-XY is not flawless. File/sample management is very basic and somewhat bad at the moment. I hope it's fixed in an update. There is no internal insert FX (I'd love to have one per track). There is no easy way to slice samples. There is only one LFO per track. There is a shared envelope for the drum set.
    It sounds excellent, and the DACs are super high-quality. It works very well with external FX and MIDI. The multisampler is very good, if a bit cumbersome to set up due to a bad sample management system.
    Flaws aside, I really like mine. As you said, it's inspiring and very immediate, and I'd buy it again immediately if it broke.

    The brain was already in the OP-Z but I was just discussing the other day with a guy that had made a video “brain deep dive” if it is changed or not. I believe on the OP-Z you could use brain only by pressing 1 key (at least that is how I used it for it broke, I think) and here you clearly press multiple keys when you hit the G. (I think you try G and G + Bb and you get different results. ) so this really looks very promising. But you press an awful lot of white keys for a sequence that is already in white keys, would be interesting to see more combinations of white and black keys. For example, I wonder if C + Bb will go to C minor or C mixolydian? Hard to tell. I think I am going to buy it too, because I loved the OP-Z and although I can replicate this brain behavior for 90% in Hapax, Hapax is not an on the go machine.
