6:00 this is the essence of every piece of gear one pays for. Value isn't just features and aesthetics. It's also personal and evolving over time. While I too lack musical education and have been making music for years, for me this ability isn't worth $2000. But I'll never judge anyone who choses to buy it.
Thanks so much for empathizing my friend! I’m still not sure myself if this is worth the asking price but I hope to have more clarity in the weeks to come. Hope to see you soon! Cheers!
You caught main points resonating with me: I want to play a beautiful instrument. I’m OP-Z from day one, XY is next incarnation fixing or improving experience, incl screen. I used screen with phone but it’s not always practical. Seeying Brain work at screen may help to understand and use it more, even OP-Z had transpose track. Punch-in FX like DJ style tricks has zero value for me. Having said that, exploiting those for making twangs, sweeps, and twists, for your synth sound and recording those in micro dosage into the track, has huge value. Making things alive and interesting is everything at least for my electronic music. Same differentiator was there for me on OP-Z. Coincidently I buy my XY today, they start showing up at stores after holidays. OP-XY fully justifies the price for me personally. Only fool would argue it’s nothing, of course it’s a large sum of money. Have to sell smthg, plan, rethink your next gear plans, but must have for me. Great chords and track and on point talk as always, mate! ❤
I completely agree that performance is the key feature that makes the OP-Z shine. I also believe that the eight auxiliary tracks are sometimes even more important than the eight instrument tracks themselves. That said, the instruments do sound great as well!
@@MidlifeSynthesist I assume you guys know that other hardware sequencers (like the Hapax) have done this for years. Is it the combination of OP-XY features that makes it feel special and work for you?

4:08 THIS. I know that feeling and what helped me out was Suggester 2. I saw triads, 7th chords, and then "secondary dominants" which is what allowed me to "take it somewhere else" Making that click I think is worth it
Thank you for doing that! Yupp. All there on the OP Z including the performance/punch in effects. No difference so far. The OP Z let's you choose if you want to work with a display (phone over Bluetooth) or without. The build is another topic though. It feels like the OP Z wasn't really a serious option for most because of its toy like appearance. But man is it a powerhouse. Seriously. I think the OP XY shines with other aspects.
@@MidlifeSynthesist I just watched the 2 hours in depth on the andertons TV channel with the guy from TE who wrote the (incomplete) manual. That's worth watching. And to me show the real powers of the XY. And makes me feel better investing in it
that brain feature is pretty great. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same thing, but the Retrokits RK-008 also has some really good options that force transpositions to scales/modes. Makes me want to dig back into that and learn it really thoroughly.
Old school OP-Z user here. Most of the functions are the same, with a few additional ones. For example, adding more pages to the track length so you can have 64 1/16th steps creates a lot more possibilities. It’s also nice to have a screen and not have to use an app, which may or may not work anymore in 10-20 years whereas the screen can be replaced if it goes out. The synth engines sound mostly the same but I haven’t had time to explore all of them. Sampling is way easier now, with the ability to record a sample onto each track instead of each sample track using a chopped single sample. I wish it was as easy to navigate as my OP-Z but getting the hang of that comes with time. Most importantly, I think it’s not only a great instrument but a beautiful piece of design and well worth the cost, if that sort of thing is important to you. Anything that’s fun to learn and play is a good musical instrument.
I’ve had an OP-Z since day one, I still use it and always have it with me in my backpack. It’s a completely magical little device in my opinion. I don’t know if the brain in the OP-XY is more advanced than the master track on the OP-Z, but what you showed can absolutely be done on the Z. As I understand it, the sequencer and step-components are just as powerful on the OP-Z, which makes it hard for me to justify buying an OP-XY. Why X, Y when I have Z at home? ;)
Lol! Thanks for sharing that! I’ve had read that the OG has a similar function and I’m curious as to the differences. Can’t afford a Z to make the comparison though since I’ll be paying for this for a few months 😅😂 see you soon!
man, your channel's changed a lot since I was last here (and I admit, I was subscribed at some point but then not anymore). I love everything about this video: the candidness, the lack of background music and other shticks, and your overall demeanour. I think you've found an antidote that's fit for an overly attention-grabbing platform that's getting tiresome at times. time to subscribe again.
Absolutely! Education is the best investment always👍🏼 I wonder if the op xy brain helps understand theory better or just makes you lazy (like using a calculator for basic math makes you slower at doing it yourself). Hopefully I’ll have an answer down the line. Thanks for watching!
@ that’s the crux though isn’t it? This thing will modify all the tracks to fit the new scale and you can just wing it with no prep. That’s pretty powerful in a live scenario👍🏼
I love my op-z and want the op-xy really badly but I’m not paying that much for one anytime soon. My push 3 shows tomorrow, upgrading from the push 2, I’ll settle there for a bit. Sure looks slick though.
Thanks for watching my friend! Push 3 is a MASSIVE upgrade and I love it to death. You can make all the music in the world with it alone and never need anything else. Congrats and enjoy!
@@LudovicCoullet as far as I can tell, it is essentially the same thing as master on the Z. Differences so far: it’s better at auto detecting the scale/key, but also has a manual mode, unlike the Z. However, I am experiencing differences in behavior from the Z when using the tonality step component. Haven’t figured out yet if these are bugs or intentional changes.
as long as it works stringing patterns together, without skipping or off key notes? It's better than OP-Z, I wanted something portable but tracker mini and OP-Z are just not perfect. This sounds amazing, though! I love the ARP/Chords and delay.
@@MidlifeSynthesist nice! I like to hear more of that one. last Xmas I traveled to Australia and it feels warm about anything Australian. we liked it there very much!
This is one of the things that's most tempting to me about the OP-XY. I'm also music theory blind and even if i've read or watched videos on it it takes a long time for me to really internalize concepts and understand them in practice (i'm a drummer what do you expect??). Thanks for the vid!
Yooo!! I used to tease my band drummer when we would tune our basses and guitars😜 “This song is in G major btw”. He’d just give me a dirty look😂 The Brain is definitely interesting for the theoretically challenged like you and me. Thanks for watching, lots of love my friend!
I think the punch-in FX in a SP-404 context might get boring over time, but you can use it in a more subtle way to add variation to a single instrument or perc/melodic group. And you can sequence it, in multiple different scenes! Also, since the stock drum kits follow a pattern in how the type of drum sounds are placed, you can play around with your own drum kits to create new types of punch-in patterns. Ramp up doesn't have to be a kick, snare, tom fill if you replace those samples with other sounds. Every time I think of a feature on the XY, how it works and how you can bend it, it blows my mind. My prediction is that the XY will far surpass the impact the OG OP-1 had. And the OP-1 had a pretty huge impact.
Thanks for watching! I’m trying to understand it slowly so I don’t overlook anything, so I haven’t gotten to exporting yet, but it is a big item on my to do checklist! See you soon!
You can’t..there’s a reason all the YT shills haven’t touched that topic because you can’t. I’m returning mine I got pass the honeymoon phase and this is not worth Over 2k.
I don’t intend to sound mean, but most hardware boxes have a scales mode… for a few hundred bucks get a circuit tracks and use the scale and key function. You can easily arrange on it…plus send it external to other midi gear. Mc 101 and 707 same. Mpc and machine also have scales and chords mode. On the Mpc you can even supply midi chord progressions you like and save them… recall them and transpose and play them on individual pads.
Hello my friend! I’ve used a few of those boxes (MPC is one of my all time favorites) and though they indeed have chord/scales modes, when I’ve used them in this way (live transposing of multiple tracks and sequences into different modes/scales) the results have usually been very unpredictable or even unusable. I want to compare this eventually with my MPC so I’d love to check out if maybe there’s something I’m missing with it’s ability to do live scale changes and sequence transpositions. Do you know of any videos showing that being done in Mpc and hopefully explaining it so I can try it out? Could you maybe leave me a link to check it out? I’d truly appreciate it🙌🏻 lots of love!
most composed music doesn’t change scale and sound natural unless you are doing the scale change using a few notes that are common to both scales (e.g intermingle 2 scales both that have the chords of Cm). That said, I know on the Roland they have a transpose clip setting which is super easy. On the Mpc I would simply use the progression feature to flip the scale and key how you like while recording or some prefer to keep it easy and resample the section to a combined sample that they transpose and effect (filter pass) for a bridge or alt sequence. On Circuit Tracks I would just tie short clips with key changes… as it easy very easy to program.
I have the OP-1 and many TE products. I would never buy one again without hands on time before purchase. Great stuff but expensive and quirky. I like my TX-6 mixer and OB-4 the best.
Until now, the xy seems to be the most accesible one of the bunch, lots of known influences are apparent in the workflow! That said, totally agree you should try one first! It’s a huge investment 😅
@@edtotman2952 Yes. The OP Z calls it the "Master" track. With the "M" on the track button. If you connect the phone over Bluetooth to the OP Z then you have the feedback on the key and mode of the sequence and when transposing it shows you the applied key and mode as well.
People were making great bridges before there was so much focus on music theory. Like you say, it’s a feel and you can cultivate that feel for your composition with lots of listening to lots of different music, and practicing composition. Great video, I like how you’re approaching this series! 🙂✨
Super excited for the second part of your series, first time someone is saying something with that clarity about the brain. I have one XY, due to GAS, I’m not musician, tried to learn music theory but I don’t get it. Thank you so much for making this and sharing. I’m glad you have your arm back.😊
I still don't get it, but I still watch the video and enjoy the chill take on a thing. I mean I just bought a push 3 so I'm not complaining about the cost but of the two things that one (and the 25% off sale) made it a no brainer for my goals in music creating.
Nice one. I really liked that short jam-sequence. I wonder If you can you use the Brain to transpose the chords of external synth's and vst's, too? That would be interesting for me 🙂
TE is known for making devices with intentional limitations. What are the purposeful limitations of the XY? Do you feel that they hamper or inspire you?
Hi! I haven’t hit any weird TE limitations per se yet, but I need more time with it. I absolutely know what you mean though and I’ll be sure to report them when I see them show up. Haven’t gotten there yet, but seems that exporting tracks might be the bottleneck. See you soon!
The Brain transposition is pretty cool, but otherwise it seems like just a beefed-up OP-Z. I got mine used for about $350 a couple of years ago and it's still the most versatile, powerful, and fun instrument I own. Think I'll wait about a year or two and pick a used XY when the market is flooded. In the meantime the Z does the trick.
I’m hearing a lot that the Z has lots in common with this! Having never owned one, certainly feels like I missed out! Happy beatmaking and thanks for sharing!🙌🏻
As an op-z user I was waiting for a new and improved version, but after seeing all the reviews I came to the conclusion that there are not enough improvements for me to upgrade. XY is a very nice device with great potential, i'm sure. Here in Europe the OP-Z is 330 Euros now and it does a lot of stuff the OP-XY does. If TE would just open up the synth engine on the op-z, i wouldn't even watch this video :)
As anyone else, I think it is a very interesting and GAS-inducing device but with a price point so massively inflated that it's really turning me off. Just for comparison, the novation circuit tracks can also do the transposition to different keys and modes, and that went on sale for almost 1/10th of the price of this device last week. Of course there are some things that the XY can do that the CT can't or can't do as immediate, but no way are they worth 2000 bucks to me. That said, love your channel and would love to see more content of you creating music and playing around with it. Live vicariously through you. Much love.
At 5 min mark you feel like you've been 'let in for the first time to a secret place' I think NDLR might have something to say about that with its chord sequencing
great video, sadly not in stock in belgium for the moment. Is it easier than a Digitakt? After a few months i forgot all the combinations all the time so i sold it! they added so many functions to memorise i am to stupid i guess.
No worries, honeymooning with my first Elektrons, I'm totally fine ;-) Still, looks like a fun music machine. I like the design, the GUI. Might fetch me a TE in the future, but that'll probably be the PO-133.
It's a great device; I can't think of anything else like it in this form factor (no, Deluge doesn't cut it). I'd not ignore punch in fx, start sequencing them and combining with tape, yu can get a really interesting, unique sounds. Brain, well, it's for people who don't know music theory. Useful shortcut that speeds up workflow, but nothing magic and it gets confused with more complex scales/chords. For me, it's a gimmick, but I can see the appeal. By the way try linking a track to lead it, it's quite fun. Many early 2000s arrangers and workstations had similar/better transpose abilities. Right now, off the top of my head, Squarp Hapax can do this (and more-it can transpose to any chord, and it's a great sequencer, by the way). OP-XY is not flawless. File/sample management is very basic and somewhat bad at the moment. I hope it's fixed in an update. There is no internal insert FX (I'd love to have one per track). There is no easy way to slice samples. There is only one LFO per track. There is a shared envelope for the drum set. It sounds excellent, and the DACs are super high-quality. It works very well with external FX and MIDI. The multisampler is very good, if a bit cumbersome to set up due to a bad sample management system. Flaws aside, I really like mine. As you said, it's inspiring and very immediate, and I'd buy it again immediately if it broke.
its sound good. but 2000 usd with that money you can buy an analog solutions synth and sound way way better or i dont know a tascam model 16 an MPC one+ and a korg micro korg 2 and you can make a lot of crazy shit with it and sounds a lot better. good video as always
Oh I thought you would find it funny that after your Dentist Spiel in the last episode about how people don’t invest in their teeth, I got a deep cleaning appointment.
0:57 . Inspiration is subjective by definition. And with this big a price tag for something that is optional for a music studio (not a pc and daw, not a keyboard, not a year's subscription to Truefire, not a guitar or studio preamp...), there is going to be a lot of qualifiers for how "inspirational" the OP-XY is. I am personally inspired by still being able to pay my mortgage each month. If you are inspired cool though. ✌️
Oxi One has a very similar feature but it makes other tracks follow a designated track. Haven’t tried it as a performance trick but now I definitely will! Thanks for watching!
I wonder why they didn't name this the OP-Z field. Because this seems to be what the revised version of the Z ought to be. Unless...they will still make an OP-Z field which will have most features of the XY, (and then some for product differentiation) but with no screen and the same form factor as the Z, in a robust aluminum chassis. All for say $999. But I still think the XY is a home run as it is. I prefer the larger form factor, and the screen is so nice for someone like me who hates to remember button combos (hence why i suck at Street Fighter). No issue with the price as it is what it is.
The brain was already in the OP-Z but I was just discussing the other day with a guy that had made a video “brain deep dive” if it is changed or not. I believe on the OP-Z you could use brain only by pressing 1 key (at least that is how I used it for it broke, I think) and here you clearly press multiple keys when you hit the G. (I think you try G and G + Bb and you get different results. ) so this really looks very promising. But you press an awful lot of white keys for a sequence that is already in white keys, would be interesting to see more combinations of white and black keys. For example, I wonder if C + Bb will go to C minor or C mixolydian? Hard to tell. I think I am going to buy it too, because I loved the OP-Z and although I can replicate this brain behavior for 90% in Hapax, Hapax is not an on the go machine.
I can understand how it seems similar. Lots of other devices have a transpose sequence function, but what I’m finding unique here is that you don’t lose the harmonic relationships between sequences, making it really great at exploring the different changes on the fly while remaining musical if that makes sense. Hope that helps! Cheers!
It’s been hard to find any videos of people using the brain properly, by playing chords into it. It’s like those old Solton arranger keyboards, but IDM version
Your problem with not knowing where to go after the main loop & hook isn't a music theory problem but more of a lack skills in the composition. Check this dude out for more tips: www.youtube.com/@JamesonNathanJones

The really great thing about punch in fx is that they work over midi on external hardware.. that’s amazing
Thanks bro! Love seeing you here and appreciate your thoughts! I think you’ll definitely have a great time with it🤘🏻
I completely agree that performance is the key feature that makes the OP-Z shine. I also believe that the eight auxiliary tracks are sometimes even more important than the eight instrument tracks themselves. That said, the instruments do sound great as well!
Thanks for dropping me a line my friend! See you soon with more XY videos!
I was thinking the exact same thing once I found this function. Pure awesomeness ❤
Glad you like it! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
@@MidlifeSynthesist I assume you guys know that other hardware sequencers (like the Hapax) have done this for years. Is it the combination of OP-XY features that makes it feel special and work for you?
looks like your hand is getting bettter, that's really great !!!
btw. one day i will buy this just becasue of that brain transpose feature .. this is just amazing .. absolutely love it
Thanks so much for the good vibes my friend! Until now, it really seems to be the killer app on this thing!
4:08 THIS. I know that feeling and what helped me out was Suggester 2. I saw triads, 7th chords, and then "secondary dominants" which is what allowed me to "take it somewhere else"
Making that click I think is worth it
Wow! I had no idea the suggester 2 existed! Thanks for the suggestion🫢😜 will definitely check it out! Lots of love!
@@nitefly-music thanks for that my friend! I never knew the OP-Z was so awesome!🙌🏻
Sounds absolutely beautiful and looks so fun to play
It is!! Thanks for watching!
I really love the track. Made my workday better ❤️
This comment made my day better❤️ thank you my friend!
Welcome back! I really appreciate your message my friend❤️
While it’s an interesting concept, I think learning theory is way way cheaper than $2k and you can use it on any synth/groovebox
Absolutely! Education is the best investment always👍🏼 I wonder if the op xy brain helps understand theory better or just makes you lazy (like using a calculator for basic math makes you slower at doing it yourself). Hopefully I’ll have an answer down the line. Thanks for watching!
but you can't *perform* it on any groovebox. Not live
@ that’s the crux though isn’t it? This thing will modify all the tracks to fit the new scale and you can just wing it with no prep. That’s pretty powerful in a live scenario👍🏼
@@MidlifeSynthesist Does the brain work with midi tracks? Can you use it when sequencing external gear? Thank you for this video.
@ don’t know yet that’s an awesome thing for me to test out! Thanks for the idea!
Unless you're Jeremy from Red Means Recording. Foxes tend to have awesome cosmic powers like that. So the legends go.
100%!
"Brain" is basically the same as "master" track on OP-Z
Is it for sure ? Or any improvements ?
Yeah, the OP-Z has this kind of global transpose, I don’t get how this Brain is different?
@@LudovicCoullet as far as I can tell, it is essentially the same thing as master on the Z. Differences so far: it’s better at auto detecting the scale/key, but also has a manual mode, unlike the Z. However, I am experiencing differences in behavior from the Z when using the tonality step component. Haven’t figured out yet if these are bugs or intentional changes.
Thanks for the glorious content as usual!!
as long as it works stringing patterns together, without skipping or off key notes? It's better than OP-Z, I wanted something portable but tracker mini and OP-Z are just not perfect.
This sounds amazing, though! I love the ARP/Chords and delay.
Thanks so much for watching my friend!! I’m digging it so far!
I believe the Woovebox might do something similar to the Brain function.
I just recieved a woovebox! I didn’t know it could do that! Thanks for the headsup, I’ll be sure to include it in my comparisons👍🏼👍🏼
He’d just give me a dirty look😂
The Brain is definitely interesting for the theoretically challenged like you and me. Thanks for watching, lots of love my friend!
OP-XY is GREAT!!!
Didn't you review the Oxy1 with it's chord mode feature? How is that different from this expensive device?
It’s very similar but not quite! I plan to do a video comparing both soon! Hope to see you there!
op-z was fun, I think op-xy was a great idea, make the fun and creative factor of op-z but make it super professional and good.
Thanks for sharing your first thoughts on it, nice video! One question: Have you found out how to export your project into a DAW?
Thanks for watching! I’m trying to understand it slowly so I don’t overlook anything, so I haven’t gotten to exporting yet, but it is a big item on my to do checklist! See you soon!
@@MidlifeSynthesist Thanks for your reply, looking very much forward to your experience on how to do that 😊

@@terrorbytez6537😮😢
"Rated g for gas" 🤣
And that's how you get a thumbs up in the first two seconds of the clip, well done sir.
Lol! Thanks my friend!🙌🏻
Sounded good man. Cool machine for sure.
Thanks my friend! I’m really digging it too🙌🏻
...and let's not forget that OP Z can control and sequence lighting/video/photos and 3D Unity engine visuals.
Not there (yet) on the OP XY
Does the OP Z have anything resembling the brain function?
I’m glad you have your arm back.😊
Thanks so much for watching and leaving such kind words! I hope you enjoy what’s coming cause there’s plenty more to explore! See you soon!
I still wanna know if it’s possible to export the separate tracks in your daw
Me too!!😂 haven’t gotten there yet but I’m headed that way🤘🏻 I’ll keep you posted!
That would be interesting for me 🙂
I haven’t tried that yet but thanks so much for the idea! That would be very cool to experiment with! Stay tuned🤘🏻
@@MidlifeSynthesist can't wait! 🤓
Is that the Kastle 2 off to the side of your desk?
YES!! Good eye😂 I’ll be reviewing it soon!
@MidlifeSynthesist Nice! I was actually curious if this might be a trend toward more fully featured instruments from TE.
I have the opz and there is a key change thing on there, but the brain sounds waaayyyy better! Thanks for posting , keep dreaming🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much for watching!!
Go Brain, Yeah. Thanx maan!
Lol! Thank you!
Brain is the big feature. Super useful and innovative
It really is! I was expecting it to be wonky but it really feels like something unique!
We never doubt You
Thanks my friend💪🏼 gonna keep it real🤘🏻
As anyone else, I think it is a very interesting and GAS-inducing device but with a price point so massively inflated that it's really turning me off. Just for comparison, the novation circuit tracks can also do the transposition to different keys and modes, and that went on sale for almost 1/10th of the price of this device last week. Of course there are some things that the XY can do that the CT can't or can't do as immediate, but no way are they worth 2000 bucks to me.
That said, love your channel and would love to see more content of you creating music and playing around with it. Live vicariously through you. Much love.
Thanks so much for the kind words my friend! I plan to put it through its paces and compare it with my other gear, hope to see you there!!
At 5 min mark you feel like you've been 'let in for the first time to a secret place' I think NDLR might have something to say about that with its chord sequencing
I’ve never used one! Thanks for the heads up!❤️🙌🏻

great video, sadly not in stock in belgium for the moment. Is it easier than a Digitakt? After a few months i forgot all the combinations all the time so i sold it! they added so many functions to memorise i am to stupid i guess.
I’m not sure yet! I think the Digitakt might be deeper, but this seems faster? I need some time before I can say for sure. Thanks for watching!!
Track sounds great man... I love the sound of the OP-XY. GAS on 1000 😩
Thanks so much my friend! I’ll be making more of these so stay tuned🙌🏻
Every new demo confirms me that this is just a way more expensive Electribe.
Isn’t that brain function available on Oxi One already?
It’s very similar but not quite! I plan to do a video comparing both soon! Hope to see you there!
I know this is off topic, but anyone know what watch that is!? Dig it!
its sound good. but 2000 usd with that money you can buy an analog solutions synth and sound way way better or i dont know a tascam model 16 an MPC one+ and a korg micro korg 2 and you can make a lot of crazy shit with it and sounds a lot better. good video as always
I bought a used OP-Z for about 1/10th the price and feel like that was the smarter choice 😂
Probably right ngl😂
Oh I thought you would find it funny that after your Dentist Spiel in the last episode about how people don’t invest in their teeth, I got a deep cleaning appointment.
Ah man, I was able to resist buying the OP-XY until this video 😭
😅 hang in there!!😜
My goodness no one probably caught on, but this is the new Rokop machine
Can you not do this with the OXI ONE?
Oxi One has a very similar feature but it makes other tracks follow a designated track. Haven’t tried it as a performance trick but now I definitely will! Thanks for watching!

I wonder what you sold to buy this.
You're killing me over here. The brain function just messed me up.
😂 my work here is done!!
Cool video!
Thanks so much! See you next time🙌🏻
The brain was already in the OP-Z but I was just discussing the other day with a guy that had made a video “brain deep dive” if it is changed or not.
Pretty sure can do this on a novation circuit; even the original.
Over/under on the number of comments from those drinking haterade. I have my popcorn ready.
😅
The Brain to me just sounds exactly like the chord accompaniment you get on digital pianos, I really don't get it!
I can understand how it seems similar. Lots of other devices have a transpose sequence function, but what I’m finding unique here is that you don’t lose the harmonic relationships between sequences, making it really great at exploring the different changes on the fly while remaining musical if that makes sense. Hope that helps! Cheers!
@@MidlifeSynthesist I'm glad you find it so inspiring!
