  • 1953 was just 8 short years after the end of WWII, Canada still had one the largest armed forces organizations on the planet, industry and commerce was pumping full blast, the Baby Boomer generation was popping out like flies in the heat of summer, times were very good, and Canada was still very much 'British Empire' oriented.
The CBC scooped the news media world with it's coverage of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation June 2, 1953, W. Garfield Weston of Canadian global giant Weston Foods sponsored 50 young Canadian girls to tour England and France and attend the Coronation in their 'private box' along the new Queen's parade route, which I digitized some years ago and you can watch from my youtube channel, and many Canadian cities and towns held their own celebrations,
such as this 16mm film, courtesy of David Sharron of the Brock University Special Collections and Archives, of St Catharines' Coronation Parade to honour the newly minted Queen Elizabeth II as our Monarch.

Canada did have its own flag then. It was the Canadian Red Ensign.

James, thank you for educating me on that point. I am ashamed to confess I did not know. Wiki tells me the Red Ensign became Canada's official flag in 1946, and versions of it and it's "unofficial" use date back to 1868.
