      Adept Ape at 2:54 are they separate brand safety razors, or all the same brand? And they all have the turning cylinder at the bottom plus the same insert through the safety hold?

    • @robertbrooks1575
      @robertbrooks1575 8 лет назад

      I'd imagine you already figured out the answer, but there are two different brands. One was from one brand and featured the butterfly style of opening the housing, while the other two were a different brand. They do differ in shave style from brand to brand. Some are more aggressive than others.

    It might be different if this was a matter of opinion, but it isn't. Cost difference is not opinion. Amount of waste is not opinion. Severity of irritation is not opinion. Compatibility is not opinion. Duration is not opinion. These factors can be directly compared and cartridge razors simply do not come out on top.

    I wouldn’t advertise to newcomers that you can go months without changing a DE. Having over 8 years of wet shaving with only DEs, I’ve never found this to be true unless you are ready for some extreme tugging. Plus, it’s just not necessary for the blade to last longer. The only reason you want a blade to last a long time is if you are using expensive blades, like cartridges, which is not a concern for DE shaving. While I can stretch out certain blades to maybe a couple weeks, I don’t bother. I tell newbies that changing out the blade after 4 shaves will ensure you have a freshly sharp blade all the time (something you can’t afford to feel with cartridges), plus it is much more hygienic.

    • @StockMarketsMadeEasy
      @StockMarketsMadeEasy 3 года назад +2

      Absolutely! A DE blade will NEVER last for months unless you have soft baby hair on your face! And if you do, do you really need to shave at all!!??
      Also, though I'm into wet shaving, I must say that a Mach 3 cartridge will last much much much longer.

    you forgot probably the most important reason. less chance of infections and bumps. cartridge razors end up being clogged with hair, skin and anything else on your face or head when shaving. you will not get all the gunk out of the cartridge. bacteria and rot begin to take effect on the what is stuck in it...Now you accidentally cut yourself or knick a bump. infection can set in. with DE safety razor you can break apart and clean easly and disinfect. I actually have less bumps and irritations now than when I used cartridge and can shave more often.

But I feel that there are better DE razors out there that I have yet to buy in the future while I plan to get Feather blade once I use up 100 blades of Astra pack that I bought. And they really get a smooth shave and are especially good for older gents who may struggle with other razors. I got a Viking one for the Man Unit this Christmas after many failed razor gifting attempts previously (electric, Mach, etc.), plus all the little usual accessories, and he loves it. Plus, his mug is so, so smooth, which i love. He even likes the old school ritual of using the brush, oils or creams, which he typical avoided as much as possible, and finds he gets way less irritation and bumps. I'm actually kind of jealous and considering getting one for myself for legs and the rest lol.

    • @DragonsinGenesisPodcast
      @DragonsinGenesisPodcast 9 лет назад +16

      +tanbir rahman depends on the blade. I've had some that go dull after 3-4 shaves, some that last 7-10, and some that last so long I lost count how many times I shaved with them.
      The longest I've ever used a cartridge razor was six shaves. That was the Mach 3 and the Dollar Shave Club 4X. Even the DSC is $1.50 per cartridge. I can get 10 blades for my safety razor for that price.
      Also duration is dependent on hair thickness, frequency of shaving, and the size of the area shaved. Some guys have thinner hairs than others. Some only shave cheeks and sideburns. Some shave only twice a week. Others, like me, shave several times a week, shave my whole face, and also shave my head. My hairs are thick so my blades go dull much faster than they should.
      Still, if you can get 7 shaves out of a safety razor at 0.10 per blade as opposed to 4-5 shaves out of a cartridge razor at a cost of 2.00 per blade, you're spending 1/20th the amount of money on razors.

      not necessarily. if a person has finer hair or doesn't shave his entire face his blades will last longer. I have a brother who only grows a patch on his chin and sideburns and the hairs are fine. His blades last about 2 months. If he was shaving a full beard and the hairs were thicker like mine, they'd last 2 weeks. The more wear and tear, the faster a blade goes dull. The less use, the longer it lasts. It's that simple.

      Adept Ape I used the Mach3 prior, that just started to become expensive. I'd say with thst razor the first time you shave it's like a 10 out of 10 second is probably 8/10, third time like 6/10 then after that I just wanted to replace it, wouldn't shave that well 3-4 uses.
      With a safety razor it starts like a 8/10 but it can be used several times. I use the same one for a while before I replace it and I'm buying cheap ass blades too.

    Safety razors if not properly angled will hurt your face.
    Cartridge blades are more easy to shave as they adjust to the angles of your face.Like mach3

  • @jimflys2

    My experience is thus: I have shaved with a twin blade Gillette Sensor II for years. About 25 or so. Three years ago to the day (almost) i jumped on the band wagon and got into simple double edge safety razors. My barber sold them. He told me, "well you may not get any better of a shave, just different. Maybe less irritation because the blade only cuts once." Sounded good, so i got one. then I got another, because well, guys love tools. especially nice heavy tools. Professional tools. Beautiful tools. We are succors that just love well made stuff! I was looking for the "perfect shave" that i had not yet found! Then I found the myriad of razor blades that will make the perfect tool, really perfect. Coated, non-coated, open combed vs closed comb razors. You get the idea. Well, The first day I used the "old school" safety razor I learned what the hell a steptic pencil was for and why you would need one. I cut myself more than ever with this new tool than ever with the multi's. then I learned about technique. Oh yeah, now I was in the club of real men, with real tools, expensive tools and I was going to only pay like .03 cent per shave! Oh yeah! I kept at it and stopped cutting myself. now an then it still happens. I decided it was time to try the old Sensor II just for fun after all these, count them, 3 years! All I can say is wow. There is, believe it or not, a reason why razor development has changed. These expensive cartridges are very good. Very good indeed. It took a lot of time to be objective, but I have found that they shave close, they shave fast and most importantly, the do shave very, very comfortably! So with a new set of 100 Feather blades and some Sharks, a ton of Crystals, I will probably use them up or maybe sell them off until they are gone. So which one is better? It is a subjective thing at best. My face says, you're not a real man because you can't shave with a straight and believe me I tired this more than once. No freaking way! There is a reason when you look back in the up to 1905 or so a reason why almost everyone wore a well groomed long beard. Soldiers had mustaches and goatees, because when faced with a straight razor, most of us are real pussies... It freaking hurts! So until they invented a safety razor that was reasonably comfortable, the military allowed beards. go figure that! So, jump on guys, it really isn't the money that matters when you are paying for those expensive multi's. When you count all the singles you are going to start getting, it will make the multi blade thing seem like just normal everyday expense compared to the the hobby or the singles. But you don't need to take my word for it, you get 2 or 3 or 4 new "tools" and try 6 or 10 different brands of blades. You'll have so much fun, you'll probably make a youtube video of yourself in front of a steamy mirror telling all the kids how to really shave. It'll be awesome! 5 to 7 shaves out of a Feather blade - realistically.

      @AdeptApe  7 лет назад +1

      +jimflys2 That is more of an essay than a comment, but a good it is. I had a similar experience at first trying to learn the technique, but I will never go back now. The soap and lather make a huge difference, what soap do you like?

      good point , no i have not tried it yet... although I'm in love with the Gillette Fusion P-Glide.. the one that has a flex ball, and the whole thing can vibrate.... One pass of that at with its 6 blades and it takes everything in its way...
      Although, one big disadvantage is the price :( a pack of 4 blades is 10 euro (i live in Italy) .. and thats just stupid and silly in my opinion...
      I shall definitely give the safety razors a try... :)

      I must warn you that switching to a safety razor/double edge razor takes some getting used to. If you love your pro glide and only change the blade every few months, I would just stick with it. I think double edge razors are great and the blades are much cheaper, but most guys switch because they hate the shave they get with a conventional blade. I personally always hated the shave I got conventional razors and that's why I switched, although they do save a lot of money.

    One thing to add to number five. DE blades are recyclable. They need not go in a landfill at all. (Though you should not throw them in single stream recycling as some places still hand sort.) Store them in a sharps container and drop off at a scrap yard or recycling center when it is full.

    there's a 6th reason for me to want to start picking safety razors instead of contemporary ones
    The new razors have this weird strip of cooling gel on the blade that in-my-experience is very badly irritating and I am borderline allergic to it as my whole face gets a rash from them. When in doubt for new shavers and don't know what your skin likes, might as well pick safety razors; avoiding chemicals you really don't know your skin likes is a good rule of thumb anyway.

      +KM4TQD No, I get a lot less cuts with them than the Gillette three blades razor I was using before. Most likely because you don't really press down when shaving with a safety razor, you just let the handle weight put the pressure on your face. It does take a couple shaves to get used to it though.

  • @williamcharles9480
    @williamcharles9480 7 лет назад

    I just love my double edge safety razors. The blades are so reasonably priced that I usually throw the blades away after the first shave. This is a plus for the fact that bacteria doesn't have a chance to multiply on the blade. Knowing that I'm not going to reuse the blade allows me to clean my razor of any residue that may build up after each shave. I think that the 25 cent cost for a shave is very reasonable so I don't feel guilty about tossing the blade after one use. My favorite blades only cost about 15 cents each, so it's even more reasonable. Being retired I'm not a daily shaver, more like 2 to 3 times a week I use Cremo shave cream and an $8 tube lasts what seems like forever, something like over 4 months or more. You can't beat that. Don't get me wrong, using a blade more than once is an individual choice and I don't take any issue with that as it's your face. I just think that 30 to 45 cents a week for new blades for each shave is something that I can well afford.

      +silvercrow I haven't noticed a huge difference in cuts, which are minimal, very good reduction in razor burn. You don't push as hard with a Safety Razor so that will probably lead to less cuts, but everyone's skin is different.

    • @cloudybrains
      @cloudybrains 8 лет назад +1

      You don''t have to apply as much pressure with a Safety Razor than a cartridge razor. This leads to less irritation of the skin. When I started using Safety Razors for the first time 8 months ago, I would get more cuts than with cartridge razors. Now, I literally haven't gotten a single cut in over a month, and I shave every 2 days. I used to get 1-2 little cuts per shave with cartridge razors.
      Safety Razors won't change your life, but honestly after 8 months of using one, I can safely say that they are superior to cartridge razors, once you learn how to use them.

  • @OnTheRiver66
    @OnTheRiver66 8 лет назад +1

    My experience is entirely different. I started shaving in 1960 and DE and SE razors were the only choice. I started using a Trac II razor in 1972 and got a closer more comfortable shave than with my Gillette twist to open razor. I tried my old DE razor a few times over the years but it was too painful. I do shave with DE razors because I like their look and feel, but I sacrifice the comfort and closeness my cartridge razors give me. I have tried many DE razors for the last 2-1/2 years trying to find one as comfortable as my Shick Quatro and Harry's razors, and have not. The closest is Maggard's version 2 open comb - it is as close and almost as comfortable as the Schick and Harry's. By the way, I cannot go more than 15 shaves with a DE blade, but I can get about 30 shaves with a cartridge razor. Some men change DE blades after 3 or 4 shaves. I understand some men cannot use cartridge razors, and there are some men who cannot shave with any blade and have to use dipilatory creams.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 лет назад

      +OnTheRiver66 Luckily there are many options now unlike the "good old days," since everyone's face is different some razors work differently for different people. Why do you feel the need to exaggerate? Unless you have 5 hairs as a beard you can't go months without changing a blade, sure your mileage may vary because every skin type and every beard type is different maybe 6/7 shaves out of a blade and that's asking too much but months is way too much. Don't get me wrong i love safety razors and i love wetshaving but you shouldn't exaggerate it by saying that you can go months without changing a blade

    You can buy adjustable DE shavers (Merkur Futur is what I own) and while shaving you can adjust the aggressiveness of the shave. That's something one of those Machs will never allow you to have.
    I usually start with a high level of aggressiveness and then gradually reduce it after each pass.
    Thanks for the video.

      I also own a Merkur 34c.
      I have more grip with the Futur due it being longer. Although when I first unboxed it I thought it would be to large but in the end I have no problem with the size. However you have to get used to the weight since it's much heavier than the 34c. By using the weight of the shaver you apply enough pressure to shave well and avoid irritation.

Apparently Merkur are "mild", so I bought a notoriously more "aggressive" parker head to see if that would make a difference, nope - exactly like a cartridge again.
    Aside from the cost of blades, safety and cartridge razors aren't really that different, "idiot proof" options that are good if you are in a hurry but nowhere near as smooth or comfortable as a straight razor.

    I have thick facial hair and when I use the disposable shavers they get clogged after every swipe. Rinsing it off doesnt help, I have to firmly hit it against the sink to unlodge the hair every time. It's time consuming and frustrating and I've broken more than I care to remember. I gave up on clean shaves about 2 years ago, and I've been using electric clippers for a rough shave ever since, it leaves a bit of stubble which the ladies love, but I'm getting older and a smooth face is more professional. I've been looking into these safety razors, but cant't seem to find them in stores. Considering ordering one on Amazon.

  • @williamcharles9480

    One more comment. I found that the best variety of razors and double edge blades can be found on Amazon. You'll need to shop around to find the best prices, though. Procuring razors and blades locally may be an option from shops located in larger cities, but for me Amazon works the best. There's also plenty of revues on line for the different makes of razors and blades. Blade assortments of a couple of blades of each brand can be found reasonably priced so that you can test the performance of the wide variety of brands, too. I've found DE wet shaving to be a relaxing moment in my life where I can allow my mind to rest from the issues of the day.
