To be fair, Mario Kart initially ripped off the zero gravity gimmick from F-Zero X. Honestly, I almost wish Mario Kart ripped off the brilliant power drift mechanic from Crash Team Racing. Kinda tired of the 'casual friendly' drifting.

Did you know? The working title of this game was Crash Team Racing 2. The bosses in CNK were intended to be playable in the console versions, but were cut due to time limitations.
S N so with that, Nina and N Brio will be racers in CTR Nitro Fueled! Koala Kong is appearing as long as Activision avoids issues with Nintendo. As for Rilla Roo... doubt it.
7:49 - Because it would conflict with the storyline, as Team Oxide and Team Trance are racing for Emperor Velo XXVII rather than against. Also Dingodile, Polar, Zam, and Zem are locked at the start of the game. So it wouldn't make sense to be able to play as them anyway. The player wouldn't have as much motivation to unlock them if that were the case.
Crash and Cortex are the "good" teams trying to save earth, N-Trance and Oxide are the "bad" teams trying to help Velo destroy it. It's actually a pretty common concept to have alternate story lines exploring both outcomes. It would have been really cool to see that in this game!

Crash Nitro Kart is still fun to play, but I'll always prefer CTR over it. However, that doesn't mean it should ever be forgotten because it did try to expand upon what CTR had already established. Looking forward to the CTTR revisit. It's been ages since I played through that game.
Great review Jak. The Nitro Kart levels being included in NF actually made me more excited for the game than expected, since the tracks of Nitro Kart actually do look amazing and seeing them in HD graphics is gonna be mind blowing. Look forward to the CTTR video.
*I can say undoubtedly that after revisiting cttr I could see its appeal!* The environments are so unique and beautiful, the music for the most part is good (some tracks though are super annoying) and the track design really fits ctr's mechanics! Also the Stunt arenas are fun!
Some of the courses being so similar to CTR is what surprised me when it was confirmed all CNK tracks were coming back. I thought we were only getting some CNK tracks back when NF was announced based on it’s title. I’m hoping we get the CNK story as potential DLC for Nitro Fueled (if it’s not in the base game). Like you said imagine if we could play as Oxide and N Trance’s teams aswell. Would totally make it worth it.
I'm glad that he re-reviewed this. I played this game a lot as a kid. I think the best way to describe the way this game feels compared to CTR is that the karts feel a bit "Heavier" with them not jumping as high, turning as hard or boosting as fast. It sounds strange but it just feels like someone increased the gravity settings. I still enjoy this game and I hope that Been listens to the requests ti have the CNK Adventure Mode added in a possible update.
I never grew up playing PS1 so i missed out on CTR. Nitro Kart was so awesome to me and just seeing this video gives me huge nostalgia. Pretty excited that the new Remake has all the Tracks from it.
I'd always thought the intro/title music invoked a sense of 'sequelness' as it was similar to the original but included more. Hope they bring it back for NF
Unpopular opinion: I actually prefer Tag Team Racing over Nitro Kart. I think it tried to do more than just copy CTR's gameplay, and while the characterization and gameplay changes were controversial, they did have their own unique charm to them. That said, Nitro Kart is far more traditional and arguably truer to the series' roots than Tag Team Racing, but in the end both games are decent follow-ups to CTR and the perfect gateways to Nitro-Fueled. Can't wait for June 21st!
Honestly, I've always enjoyed CNK, despite the lazy rehash of some maps and sluggish controls. However said that, I do not enjoy it nearly as much as CTR obviously, but man, I'd be lying, if I said that I don't have any warm and loving nostalgia for CNK. I especially feel nostalgia for the cutscenes and the way the game looks in general, that Cortex model might be my favorite in the entire series! Like seriously Cortex in CNK looks like he has the worst alcohol and drug induced hangover ever xD Another great review though, can't wait for CTTR revisit!:D
imo Electron Avenue looks a million times better in nitro kart than what we've seen in nitro fueled. it bugs me of how small the ramp is at the beginning of the remaked track.
CNK's soundtrack is my favorite feature aside of the graphics, in fact if i remember correctly there was a promotional disc that includes different and long versions of some of them. Which a few were used on the cnk website back in the day.
Ok gotta say you've hyped me up even more for CTR:NF. Unlike the teaser and demo gameplay (CTR:NF) you actually showed some of the shortcuts (I never played CNK) and boy do some of them look awesome!
In my opinion this game would have been much better if it wasn't rushed. Vicarious Visions originally planned on the bosses being playable like how you can on the GBA port and they would have had more time to polish the anti-gravity so it wasn't so broken. Who knows they might have been able to add the reserve system with more time! Regardless this game was my childhood and even though it can be pretty broken and glitchy I still love it :P
Please do the chicken joke on the CTTR revisit ("hey look, a chicken -manic laugh-"). That moment made me laugh so much that was there when I became an instant fan of your videos :)
Both MK8 & Team Sonic Racing should thank CNK for aspects they both borrowed from that game such as the anti-gravity sections, while Team Sonic Racing sort of borrowed the Team aspect of CNK with that team gauge.
Crash Nitro Kart on GBA is better, in my opinion. At least all of the bosses are playable. The game would be perfect if Pura, Zam, and Zem were playable as well. It makes no sense how Oxide doesn't really have any team members on the Game Boy Advance port.
From what I saw in the Demo. I don't believe the Team System was reintegrated. Having said that, I was playing a Beta build that was entirely designed for multiplayer, so maybe the AI Portion will still have it in game. I didn't see the Team Mechanic on my brief time playing against the AI on Crash Cove however. (Although thats clearly not a CNK track)
Revisiting this game after Nitro Fueled gave me a few surprises. First, the reserve system is actually included, but I'm not sure how it has been modified, since the game never explains the mechanics. Second, there are super boost pads and blue fire boost pads in this game, most of them in the same location as in Nitro Fueled, but it's a lot harder to mantain. I was shocked when playing Tiny Temple and see the last boost pad create a blue fire on the kart, and I believe it can be complimented with the reserve system to beat the Velo time trials
I personally loved this game... as a kid. As an adult it’s rather ehhhh. Not necessarily good but definitely not bad. It’s got a lot of good aspects to it such as the graphics and the music. But at the same time it’s got some bad aspects like the controls and a lot of ripoffs of CTR.
I loved CTR when I was a kid so I was super excited for this one when it came along. Bought the game and ended up hating it. Everything just felt off compared to CTR.
As someone who enjoys Nitro Kart, I have to agree with many of your points. I'd really like to see them add the Nitro Kart story, and see some of your points, like the Team Oxide and Team N. Trance stories get added in.

from what i understood over the years, the boost mechanic last longer depending on how much you fill the red meter, if you managed to max it out, you can last the boost for 2.0 seconds which can extremely difficult to do since the game doesn't control the best... also you did bring up that non-playable bosses (VILO being exception) but you didn't talk about the weird methods of unlocking the other teams like pura and fake crash requiring 50 boosts in adventure mode like in 2014 vid, my guess is that you're replaying old save instead of new game so doesn't bother you as much. also did you know the Xbox version supports native 720p resolution and fixed minor bugs and glitches.
But even still, the boosts don't stack up like in CTR. And yes I know, I don't need to recover every single detail about the game because people know. I'm just here for the core stuff this time around.
Agree with you on the graphics heavily, though if you're impressed with them on the PS2 you should try the Xbox version - glorious 720p accessible if you've got component cables!
Resolution differences really isn't what I look for in good graphics. Quality models, great use of colours and detailed environments. Just saying, if the game still looks good over RF into a CRT, then it's truly a good looking game! 😉
PAUSE BREAK GameCube version has the ability to unlock everything on the Game Boy Advance version. It even has the ability to make any GBA play Crash Party USA, which is just a rhythm mini-game based on the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

Out of all your reviews, I do believe CNK was one of your worst. You didn't really mention any of the good things in which the game had but shat on it and gave it an average score. Glad fo see a more experienced version of you go back and review cnk
8:48 THERE WE GO! Superior content, soundtrack, and accessibility. Heck, the Japanese and N-gage releases extended the loops for the OST! :D I am still amazed, however, that the GBA soundtrack didn't get remastered into Nitro Fueled. Honestly, it's more memorable than the console one, in my opinion.
Before I even start talking about CNK... boy I can't wait to see CTTR get annihilated by you. I have fond memories of both CTR and CNK, but CNK I haven't played in only God knows how long ago. Probably 8 years or so. I don't remember having problems controlling the karts, but I do remember having issues with momemtum, which was the crème de la crème in CTR. At least in CTRNF, all of the flawed mechanics of CNK are gone and the tracks where readjusted to fit the ones from CTR, though I will miss some anti-gravity sections.
I’ve only played the demo of Crash Team Racing on Spyro Year of the Dragon and I wasn’t to big on the controls but that could just be the demo so I probably didn’t see a lot of problems you did with this game as this is the only Crash Kart racing game I’ve played but I do agree with some of the things you said though I didn’t have a problem with the team manganic for the most part it didn’t distract me a whole lot I give this game a 7/10

Yeah, I really like the game. However, I think there is one thing CNK will still have over CTRNF: 60FPS gameplay. I've actually tried CTRNF as a demo, and I have to say, the controls aren't as responsive as that last one, and the fluidity has been sacrificed by quite a bit.
Kind of mixed. You did make some good points in your old review, but you did go a bit too deep in the game's flaws. Great video, though. Just like this one! =)
Honestly this game running at 60fps and the boost meter being near the character are things to appreciate. It's the little things that I wish the CTRNF would take. Well at least with CTRNF, you can tell when to boost from the colour of the wheels
CNK is probably the game I've played least of in the series, just never had the motivation to play through it. I'd play it for like 10 mins then go back to CTR haha
F-Zero from NINTENDO, had antigravity waaaaay before Cnk, so anyone saying "Bleeeehhh mk8 stole it" will get spyke stomped into the abbys by Captain Falcon himself!
Is F-Zero a kart racing game where players use various different items to cause chaos? Nope. And if I remember correctly F-Zero tracks were completely anti-gravity based with no anti-gravity transitions in the same fashion as CNK & MK8.

And the way Karts transform to fit antigravity in MK8 is exactly the same as CNK, so most people who played those two kart racing games are not going to think of Fzero since that game never did that. People don't think of Fzero when thinking about kart racing games, they usually think of Mario kart, Diddy Kong racing, & CTR.
While I prefer this game over Team Racing and I’ll swear by it to the day I die, I do agree with a majority of your criticisms (apart from controls, the heaviness in my opinion felt satisfying) and I really do have to thank you for being a lot more fair in the review. Yes the soundtrack is really good. I think the pre-race tune is much cooler in CNK.

Strangely enough, this game was my first Crash game. And I didn't get the game for Crash, I got it for the racing.

I was shocked when playing Tiny Temple and see the last boost pad create a blue fire on the kart, and I believe it can be complimented with the reserve system to beat the Velo time trials

I personally loved this game... as a kid. As an adult it’s rather ehhhh. Not necessarily good but definitely not bad. It’s got a lot of good aspects to it such as the graphics and the music. But at the same time it’s got some bad aspects like the controls and a lot of ripoffs of CTR.
I loved CTR when I was a kid so I was super excited for this one when it came along. Bought the game and ended up hating it. Everything just felt off compared to CTR.
As someone who enjoys Nitro Kart, I have to agree with many of your points. I'd really like to see them add the Nitro Kart story, and see some of your points, like the Team Oxide and Team N. Trance stories get added in.
I actually had a lot of fun with this game. So much nostalgia too!!
I think that only team crash and cortex were playable in adventure mode bc dingodile, polar, zem and zam were all unlockable characters
The Gameboy version of this was one of my first video games ever!

Yeah the Team Ultimate seems more useful than the item frenzy mode in CNK
I wonder how Nitro Fueled will use CNK tracks because there's no anti gravity in NF as far as I'm aware.
They've been redesigning them and from what I've seen, most look pretty good.

From what I saw Nitro Kart tracks in Nitro Fuel will get some redesign to fit CTR mechanic that mean no anti-gravity section and no team mechanic
from what i understood over the years, the boost mechanic last longer depending on how much you fill the red meter, if you managed to max it out, you can last the boost for 2.0 seconds which can extremely difficult to do since the game doesn't control the best...
also you did bring up that non-playable bosses (VILO being exception) but you didn't talk about the weird methods of unlocking the other teams like pura and fake crash requiring 50 boosts in adventure mode like in 2014 vid, my guess is that you're replaying old save instead of new game so doesn't bother you as much.
also did you know the Xbox version supports native 720p resolution and fixed minor bugs and glitches.
But even still, the boosts don't stack up like in CTR. And yes I know, I don't need to recover every single detail about the game because people know. I'm just here for the core stuff this time around.

Agree with you on the graphics heavily, though if you're impressed with them on the PS2 you should try the Xbox version - glorious 720p accessible if you've got component cables!
Resolution differences really isn't what I look for in good graphics. Quality models, great use of colours and detailed environments. Just saying, if the game still looks good over RF into a CRT, then it's truly a good looking game! 😉
PAUSE BREAK GameCube version has the ability to unlock everything on the Game Boy Advance version. It even has the ability to make any GBA play Crash Party USA, which is just a rhythm mini-game based on the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

You didn't miss much to be honest, it's a reason people still play, the original CTR over nitro kart.
True, CTR is still king of the kart racing genre, the games turning physics & graphics still hold up.

Out of all your reviews, I do believe CNK was one of your worst. You didn't really mention any of the good things in which the game had but shat on it and gave it an average score. Glad fo see a more experienced version of you go back and review cnk

I am still amazed, however, that the GBA soundtrack didn't get remastered into Nitro Fueled. Honestly, it's more memorable than the console one, in my opinion.

I have fond memories of both CTR and CNK, but CNK I haven't played in only God knows how long ago. Probably 8 years or so. I don't remember having problems controlling the karts, but I do remember having issues with momemtum, which was the crème de la crème in CTR.
At least in CTRNF, all of the flawed mechanics of CNK are gone and the tracks where readjusted to fit the ones from CTR, though I will miss some anti-gravity sections.

I’ve only played the demo of Crash Team Racing on Spyro Year of the Dragon and I wasn’t to big on the controls but that could just be the demo so I probably didn’t see a lot of problems you did with this game as this is the only Crash Kart racing game I’ve played but I do agree with some of the things you said though I didn’t have a problem with the team manganic for the most part it didn’t distract me a whole lot
I give this game a 7/10

Those shoes were most certainly impossible to fill for CNK and even worrying to see CTR:NF fill.
Yeah, I really like the game.
However, I think there is one thing CNK will still have over CTRNF: 60FPS gameplay.
I've actually tried CTRNF as a demo, and I have to say, the controls aren't as responsive as that last one, and the fluidity has been sacrificed by quite a bit.

Honestly this game running at 60fps and the boost meter being near the character are things to appreciate. It's the little things that I wish the CTRNF would take. Well at least with CTRNF, you can tell when to boost from the colour of the wheels

CNK is probably the game I've played least of in the series, just never had the motivation to play through it. I'd play it for like 10 mins then go back to CTR haha
I'd say try to give it a proper go, the tracks get a lot better after 10 minutes.
F-Zero from NINTENDO, had antigravity waaaaay before Cnk, so anyone saying
"Bleeeehhh mk8 stole it" will get spyke stomped into the abbys by Captain Falcon himself!
Is F-Zero a kart racing game where players use various different items to cause chaos? Nope. And if I remember correctly F-Zero tracks were completely anti-gravity based with no anti-gravity transitions in the same fashion as CNK & MK8.

And the way Karts transform to fit antigravity in MK8 is exactly the same as CNK, so most people who played those two kart racing games are not going to think of Fzero since that game never did that. People don't think of Fzero when thinking about kart racing games, they usually think of Mario kart, Diddy Kong racing, & CTR.
While I prefer this game over Team Racing and I’ll swear by it to the day I die, I do agree with a majority of your criticisms (apart from controls, the heaviness in my opinion felt satisfying) and I really do have to thank you for being a lot more fair in the review. The original review is really the only vid of yours I actually disliked and to see you come back and explain your thoughts more was excellent. Looking forward to TTR’s re review!

The one with fiery skulls on it... that's literally all I know. Just some random 3rd party controller I picked up on EB Games over a decade ago.

Well it's my childhood controller. All my others broke back in the day and I've just used it since.
