The eshop is an incredibly important topic of discussion that I think most people have been ignoring in favor of discussing the hardware itself, so thank you for covering it! It’s integral that Nintendo gets it right this time, especially since they’re going to have waaay more games on launch than they did for the first Switch. Excited to give this one a listen!
First off, amazing podcast episode, it's really refreshing to have a podcast episode that's focused on what improvements can be made to make developers feel better and what sorts of improvements can be made behind the scenes, it's a great listen
I think Nintendo could have a simple review system, something like what RUclips does: like, or dislike. You can leave a review only after you purchase the game or even need to finish it. But the review will earn you coins for wallpaper or even theme. I think it needs to interact with people in a positive way, finding games easier for sure, give people more motivation to play, share thoughts with community, or earning digital rewards. Otherwise, it would be too boring for Nintendo.
1. End stick drift 2. Make 60FPS the floor 3. Increase game file sizes 4. Prioritize hardware architecture for fast loading 5. Increase audio codec for high fidelity/atmos style audio 6. Nonproprietary wireless headphone support
I’ll add some items to the Switch 2/eshop wish list: 1. A microphone built into the controller that can be used to speed text data entry for game searches. Many TV remote controllers have this capability. 2. Better friend/family discoverability and sharing. For one, the system should outright recommend accounts on the same Wi-Fi network as friends. 3. The ability to download a game digitally if I own it physically. As such, I can take a subset of my physical games with me all the time without having to lug them along, or deal with cartridge swapping all the time. 4. (Not really a wish, but something I could see them doing:) Suggested game appearing as an icon on your home page, thus speeding the time to discover, purchase, and download said game.
I swear I was refreshing RUclips on my phone at work & I had a spider sense a video I was looking for would materialize! Thanks Nate & MVG! Oh snap & a Celia guest feature 🔥

Glad to see you guys back with another episode. Honestly for me would like if the eshop would stop adding shovelware “games” especially now that some use ai.
Oh that outro! We need a full version to it! Congratz on 25k guys! Oh Hi Celia!! Loved the latest Game and Talk BOTS episode. Girls girls girls! 🤣 On this point, Nintendo next system just needs to be power improvements on the switch design (no gimmicks added), but improve it’s online infrastructure. Rating systems (Mario Stars theme?), better social systems. Indie games can be multiplayer. Plus the Eshop isn’t web based indesign. Have it server based. We legit load the webpage for the eshop. I definitely prefer the launch switch's "walled garden" over the shovelware slop we have today. Until around 2019, I was able to actually browse the coming soon and recently released section every week and keep an eye out for indie games that I might like. Now, it's a wall of Nsfw puzzle game copy and paste rereleases and crappy mobile games. While they should have been more open, there is a HUGE difference between Celeste and "ecchi collection 6". In fact, if it wasn't for the limited selection of games those first few years, I would have never randomly found Shovel Knight by browsing around on the store. I also agree that Nintendo needs a better way to look for games you're interested in on the platform. Their are so many games I want to play that I had no idea had launched on switch.
I appreciate you guys. Even if you’re mostly guessing your asses off. You guys do it well. Just a hint that maybe you know more than the average RUclipsr, but either way you guys always have kickass Nintendo discussions. I really do appreciate it.
Congrats on 25k subs. I did notice that Beatemups has like 1.7 million subs on his main channel because he has made like 30 videos of "10 eShop games worth buying," so people find him specifically because the eShop makes it hard, and he helps people find the good stuff. Then his Nontendo podcast is stuck at 89k subs after 2 years or so. Different types of channels get different amounts of subs, and it's more about the quality of the content and the subscribers that counts.
I still remember day 1 of the Switch eShop when it had like 12 to 15 games and evey new release was a big deal. I actually started saving games to my wishlist from the beginning, so I have plenty of games on there and I just check that list periodically to see if anything is on sale. I have about 200 games total, plus 100 or more still on my wishlist. I try to check the new releases regularly to add anything I might like to my wishlist. That's really how I manage to keep track of games on the eShop. I really hope they improve the next one and add ratings and suggested games.
I’m losing hope the switch 2 is being revealed next week, it would be so weird to not do it before TGS, when they will talk about it with the developers there and something will leak from that.
Well I couldn't imagine them announcing anything about it around the launch of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom today. Maybe next month at the earliest makes more sense.
I was watching something else...and then I saw the podcast was up in my list! Immediately switched over! I don't remember what I was watching now because I'm glued into this show.
More genre labes like genre and demographics, searching and recommendations by genre and demographics, individual developers and publishers listed instead of just the publisher, 5 star review and a private bug report system would immensely help a future eshop.
The gifting thing is so real. I’ve been trying to get my GF to play Portal 2 with me and it was finally on sale the other day, but with no way to gift it to her, I had to send her money over Apple Pay so she could buy it with her own card. Meanwhile on Xbox, I saw Little Nightmares 1 and 2 was on sale, so I hit gift to a friend and she got it instantly. Such a simple feature that should have been added ages ago.
I think you touched on several things that do be to be changed or added like gifting, recommendations, new eshop that works better, ratings, ect that i agree with. I also think a app of the eshop to have on your phone would be nice to browse or add to wishlist while your not home or just sitting not wanting to grab your Switch.
I think Nintendo should just do a rotation of featuring. Like every game should get a day or two of feature, then show a new one. When they get through them all again
I have refunded a digital purchase through costumers service. Played the game for half an hour and couldn't stand that it didn't have inverted camera controls. Have also read of people returning games bought by mistake.
I feel like all these things are obvious and have been discussed before. This episode should’ve been titled “how Nintendo can fix the eshop” or something like that
We really take for granted just how nice Steam's store page and perks are that come with it compared to the eshop. And the eshop has been in this state since 2017 for almost 8 years now. Nintendo could have easily made it as good as Steam by now. Though 100% it needs a massive revamp for the Switch 2. Especially the flood of shovelware on the system. MVG mentioned how this really got bad during covid but this was like this way before covid started. It's just always been such an issue once they became too lax instead of too strict. They just let so much garbage on the system that their LIMITED ways to find games just get buried in the shovelware they let on.
Why wasn't I subbed...am now. You're always fair and low on the hype/filler scale. Anyway, great discussion. I really believe that a stronger system without drift is essential, but if they updated the UI and made it more customizable, that'd be a great improvement to me. The shop, folders (plus a featured list for your dashboard). Make voicechat easier, which it appears they might be doing...and make it easy for me to play remote coop with friends. Last thing...make it so people don't have to create duplicate accounts to buy the Japanese versions of games.
With regards to the eshop, an algorithm based "recommended" section based off of what I played in the past (played for most hours, played recently etc) would do amazing things for everyone involved and I hope to see it in the Switch 2 eshop. Also Nintendo did trial a rating system but the way they implemented it allowed review bombing, (everyone gets 1 star) and so they got rid of it. Nintendo should probably think a little harder about that sort of thing.
One great idea for a rating or review system would be to reward you with Platinum Points. The methods for earning them have dried up in recent years. Though it should only count for games they can verify you own.
Honestly, user star reviews would be good as well as star sub reviews for qualities people like in the game, like story, multiplayer, or graphics. Make them easy to review so you can do it from the dashboard not the shop, and then let people search by average rating for these qualities.
I've made a habit of regularly checking the "coming soon" tab and just wishlisting the games that catch my interest and don't look like ass. It's much more manageable to just parse through that and take note of the few worthy titles on the horizon
I can already visualize what that might look like; your Mii either cheering, shrugging, or frowning based on if your review is positive, neutral, or negative, and then all the tags you select are in like "speech bubbles" coming from your Mii. "Great art!", "Fun gameplay!", "Too short!"
@work_days8745 I don't disagree with that statement, but if you're Nintendo, and your goal is to sell the games that are on your digital store, why would you want to tell people why what's for sale is negative? I don't think having "real reviews" on their eShop pages is in their interest or benefits Nintendo more than their current approach. They do not seem to have any trouble selling games currently.
Am I wrong or did the eshop not have a search option? I feel like it doesn't. If Nintendo just put a search option, then people could search by name or category. That would actually help I think
All good points about the E-Shop. My typical switch experience is turning it on once every few months, trying to find something interesting in the store, then turning it off since I can't find anything. Nintendo is losing money for themselves and developers by letting this continue.
A simple "recommend/not recommend" user rating similar to steam would do WONDERS to the eShop's curation. Aaaaaand I'm convinced Pokemon is the single biggest culprit as to why there isn't one. Nintendo would kill before allowing one of their own games to be bombed on their own plataform
The problem with the review system would be review bombing. Example: we have a game that deserves 1/5 stars but because a famous person is promoting it people are giving it 5/5 stars. My ideal solution would be letting the people spend an X amount of hours playing the game and only then the people can review it 1/5 or 5/5 stars. The developer should provide how many hours people should spend in the game before they can review it. That should cover shorter games and longer games. It's not perfect but you would have improved quality control.
I would love to be able to block a game I have no interest in. Let me curatr myself. Also give me the option to hide games I've already purchased. Set a Direct-style show that features new releases in the NEWS tab. Also, my WISH LIST is too hard to and kicks me out after I buy a game.
A lot of the things you guys mentioned, such as gifting and star ratings were available on the Wii U eshop. I wonder why they removed it on switch eshop.
I don't have a problem with the Eshop having too many games as much as its interface just sucks. It never really updated to expand features or load times or search parameters to weed out game types beyond the most basic of genre stereotypes you don't even have an option to see only games that have a minimum of a fan rating (not sure how effective that option would be given Nintendo's rigging of their games). And don't get anyone started on the load times and lag city you have to wade through. It is like having to navigate through morning rush hour traffic every time you go on the Eshop.
During this talk it was mater-of-factly mentioned that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. I know a lot of people expect this, but do we actually KNOW this?
Rating system can be abused and is not reliable imo. And a algorithm would still only highlight the bigger indie games and not some hidden gem. Also by how many games drop daily on the switch its just not possible to curate them 1 by 1 manually. They would have to create a team thats only dedicated to check the games beforehand and that takes too much time and ressources. Its probably automated by now. And the price exploit its probably a code thing and they woul overhaul the whole thing which is too late now. Maybe for the next system.
You used to be able to buy an eshop game on the Nintendo Wii as a gift & send to a friend. Why didn't they keep this going for the Nintendo switch?! I don't want Nintendo to do a 2nd screen, it was nice only in a convenience on most games & they pushed too hard to make a reason to use it. They tried to make part of the controls on it that weren't necessarily & irritating to use. Like Metroid & Kid Icarus uprising, you had to aim with the stylus. That's just not great. Gyro controls with a right analog stick are way better.
They need to curate the eShop better imo. Every time I open it I see hentai games. Not ideal with kiddos in the house. Also, yes, totally agree. It's way too slow and too much friction.
@@NatetheHate I think we can probably agree on that. Whether or not disallowing apps is a good idea itself (keep in mind this also includes things like RUclips and Crunchyroll) is a different matter. What I'm more interested in is the guidelines and criteria you would have Nintendo write up as guidance for developers that would let them know whether or not something is eligible to be uploaded, due to its game-ness. The two things you could do that might work (with caveats) are 1. Create a separate app store for applications that the creators themselves would consider non-games. If a developer creates a calculator app, chances are that they will have a higher "find" rate in a non-game storefront, so they will probably willingly put their app on that store. Would they also upload it to the games eShop, hoping for double visibility? Probably. 2. Provide some reporting feature for game listings on the game eShop. You get enough users reporting a game, somebody from Nintendo takes a look at it. You might have to deal with review-bombing on some legitimate games, but once the Nintendo review takes place, the reviewer can set some kind of a flag that says "this is a legitimate game" that will raise the reporting threshold to a much much higher number of user reports. And the only reason you raise that threshold instead of permanently "certifying" the game is in case updates come down the line to alter the game to a significant enough degree that the reports have become valid.
I don't understand where this faith the eshop on the switch 2 will be better came from.. Nintendo SHOULD have all the interest in ensuring the place they actually sell titles is efficient and functional considering the switch IS the #2 for console sold overall and #1 for those that actually have a digital shop, yet they never updated it. It's insane to think how much better the WII shop was in comparison and that was their first digital storefront, they became worse and worse the more new console they released.
Man, I can’t count how many times I’ve thrown my hands up and given up scrolling through eShop sales because of the 56k-esque loading times.
I wish there was a side bar to see how far along you go down the page.
At first I thought it was my ISP speed, so I bumped it ip to 1.25 Gbps and the speed was the same!
Same! However, it's much for fast if you are in handeld mode and use the touch screen to scroll.

The Wii and 3DS eShops had star ratings. They also had a review system that used a sequence of multiple-choice questions in lieu of full text reviews.
Updates distributed through the Wii U and 3DS eShops could have patch notes. (Either that and/or updates often came with SpotPass notifications.)
The Wii U and 3DS eShops also had filters.
Those apps also had native components, as opposed to just being straight Web apps.
Honestly, the Switch eShop regressed a lot compared to the Wii U and 3DS eShops.

Nintendo is a family friendly brand, they can't have comments on their eshop... they can only have hentai always on the front page
Rating systems need the played hours attached to it and then you can filter ratings from players that played at least 5 hours e.g .
The eshop on the 3DS had a review option for games, from 1 to 5 stars.
Yes!!! love you guys, lets gooooo!!!

Hey natethehate do you think the Nintendo switch 2 will do cross gen games for switch 1?
In select cases, yes, I see it happening.
@@NatetheHate what's select cases?
Something like Prime 4.
@@NatetheHate could mario galaxy 2 finally get ported to switch?
During this talk it was mater-of-factly mentioned that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. I know a lot of people expect this, but do we actually KNOW this?
I'm saying it is going to be full backwards compatible.
Here in Mexico you see games on the eshop being sold for 1 cent lol those usually top the charts
They got rid of that in north America publishers can't do that anymore has to be a dollar
Would be nice if it could have a live metacritic score on each game. Perhaps in the corner of the image.
Nintendo is too greedy to introduce refunds, demos and such
Was this filmed before or after the big leak?
Before.
Y’all hit 25K, Let’s gooo! Livestream with the developer troll 😂
MVG get a copy of Quake II from limited run in there for the prize pot! 25k will happen before Septembers End! 🎉🎉🎉
Deku Deals solved the EShop, enough said! ❤😊
WILL MVG ever make a video about Brave Fencer Musashi and other underrated classic games?
Maybe
Great way to start morning drive to work
Enjoy!
Let us search by genre, let us filter. This is a case were making it better for consumers helps tge developers.
Heck yeah!
It has no value without a gimmick. Nintendo's core dna is creating exciting new gameplay possibilities. Sad to see them go this route
It has tons of value without a gimmick. I don’t want a gimmick and Nintendo doesn’t either.
@@Rick.Grayson it has no value without one. That's the reason people buy Nintendo hardware. Unique experiences you'll never find elsewhere
nate confirms backwards compatibility
Can we expect videos to come out at a faster cadence as we presumably gear up closer to a switch 2 reveal
Depends the topics. Certain topics we cannot discuss.
@@NatetheHate Makes sense. Has anything changed behind the scenes that would cast doubt on a reveal this year?
They need to curate the eShop better imo. Every time I open it I see hentai games. Not ideal with kiddos in the house. Also, yes, totally agree. It's way too slow and too much friction.
Who decides what is and is not a game? To a lot of players, half the titles shown on most indie directs are not what they consider games.
A clock or a calculator would not be a game. A release that's an asset flip and barely functions would fall into the "not a game" section.
The two things you could do that might work (with caveats) are
Nintendo Switch 2 E-Shop For Fun or For Glory
Solution. Bring back the miiverse
Will Glover get a digital release? I seen its physical release announcement but nothing aboutba digital release
Can't see why it wouldn't have a digital release.
lol what was that outro song?
Nice outro song
