Such a simple and obvious solution to an infuriating problem. Thank you so much. The classic notepad exe was a haven of stability and reliablity for me. An application that simply worked. When they started mucking around with it I was pissed off to no end. Cheers mate.
in tried again but i get the program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type, please choose another program and i dont want a shortcut, i wanna be able to run notepad by typing it and having file types open with it nothing works windows 11 is ruining my every day life...
Oh man you are a lifesaver thank you! Just got a new PC built and went to Windows 11 from 10 and its too different for my liking! This helped a lot thank you!
Thanks! I would like to mention that you don't need to create a shortcut on the desktop. Instead just click on Notepad in the Windows folder to open it,. once it is open right-click the Notepad icon on the task bar and click "Pin to Task bar".
Did not work for me. Following you exactly, the only thing "old Notepad", is the icon. When clicked it still remains the new version. Anything else I can do? Thx Subscribed...
@@subterraneansecret No, he's right, this doesn't work anymore. I had Windows 11 force installed on me today -- the only icon in that folder leads to the new Notepad now.
@@subterraneansecret Hmm, that is strange. The only thing I can offer is that I was on a work computer, so this may be something to do with that corporate version of Windows, the name of which escapes me.... maybe that one's more stringent with notepad somehow.
hello sir, I did the same thing, however, the app itself won't open like icon is there and all that but it just won't open. Is there a way for me to fix this?
Thank you for this. The new notepad sucks. Simplicity was key to notepad, the developers have really made some ridiculous "enhancements," which speaks to their limited understanding of what an actual basic text editor is...the way the auto pad a blank space at the end of a highlight, the changes in basic iconic windows short cut keys.
but how do we recoup notepads that we had saved on windows 10 like i saved my paypal and bank transactions and dated them on a notepad. sure we can get the old notepad back but is there no explanation on how to recover our saved notepads??
Not sure what you mean. Have you upgraded from Windows 10 to 11, or have you bought a new PC? If you bought a new PC, you should be able to save any old data on a USB stick or external hard drive. You can then transfer it over to your new PC, and it should appear in either the new or old version of notepad, depending on what you're using. To save files, insert a USB stick, or external hard drive, and open up file explorer. You should see the external device listed on the left-hand side. You can then either copy and paste by right clicking on your mouse or touchpad, or drag-and-drop to your external device. If you haven't got a USB stick or external hard drive, you can use online services such as dropbox.
Notepad does not exist in my Windows folder. Is there somewhere to get a download of the old notepad? I think I may have deleted it in error. Thanks for your help.
Looking around online, I don't see any option to download the old version, if you have deleted it by accident. However, you can go to the Windows store, and download new Windows Notepad, and try and uninstall it, using the same tutorial in this video. Other than that, probably only a factory reset may get it back.
I just started watching the video and already gave a like on It just because I loved the man's accent, IDK If he Is British but I love the British accent, and his accent sounds very likely, so... yeah
thank you so much, I was pissed off getting millions of unsaved tabs popping up when opening it asking me if I wanted to save the file for each and every file I had opened previously that I didn't want to save in the first place
I dis like the new notepad because when it opened, more notepad windows opening. and spelling check showing red in underline and any way new notepad not good. I likes old notepad. Thank you so much sir.
Guys, M$ removed the notepad.exe from c:\Windows. I got it back from an old 22H2 install. BUT, it does not work by putting it in c:\Windows, but you have to put it in c:\Windows\System32. THEN you can set a new "Open with" procedure, select that notepad.exe from System32 and confirm by clicking Always. And, yeah, clicking x on the "this is the old notepad" stih.
Windows 11 23H2 - Pro Trusted Installer box pops up and does not allow moving Notepad into System32 - file access denied, on my system at least. Oddly, There is already a Notepad.exe in System32. Same file size and install date. But still does not appear on the context menu. Bummer. I find the new Notepad SO confusing!!
@@alananderson8619 You might have to disable Trusted Installer, not sure. If you still have the old notepad.exe, then there's no need to copy it anyway. But it won't just appear in the context menu, you'll have to go look for it with "Choose an app on your PC" at the bottom of recognized apps.
On my system notepad.exe (the old one) is in both windows and windows\system32 and the system resolutely refuses to allow me to allocate either of these as the default app for .txt files. I can open the old notepad from a shortcut and then load a text file into it, but there's no way I can do it by double-clicking on a .txt file. I've made Wordpad the default app for .txt files as in most cases it's adequate and if I *really* need Notepad I can do it the long way round. If anyone knows a way round this I'd love to hear it.
M$ screwed it up even more since I posted that about 2 months ago. As usual, it feels like pissing in the sea. But, yeah, 23H2 shoves the new notepad up our asses dry ...
Thanks. I have never seen any software so crap and stupidly designed as Windows 11, congrats Microsoft on that. Nice I only have to use it for work and I have changed all the kernel to older options with these sorts of tricks.
I definatly loved the old notepad version rather than the new WIDE yet small version.
Sir, you just saved my sanity. 🙏

Doing this on Windows 11 Home 22H2 worked, but it removed the right click New > Text Document from Windows Explorer. Any idea how to restore that?

It still works, as I did it just a few weeks ago. Not really sure what I can advise, as it may be an isolated problem with your PC.
@@subterraneansecret No, he's right, this doesn't work anymore. I had Windows 11 force installed on me today -- the only icon in that folder leads to the new Notepad now.
Very strange, I'm on Windows 11, and I'm still using the old version of notepad using this method.

So uninstall the new notepad first. It can't lead to the new Notepad if it doesn't exist.
Thank you. New notepad can get stuck in a crash loop where you can't close unsaved files that have been moved or deleted.

This process still works me. In fact, I tried it just a few days ago, and is working fine on Windows 11. Must be a isolated problem with your PC.
Yes, it worked.
Thank you.

Thanks :) the new version was so buggy
Glad the video helped.

Btw the video worked, thx! (I hate the new look of the notepad.)
Tried it today, does not work. Still opens new notepad.
thanks man, the new version have a lot of new things that the app just didnt need
It worked. Thanks.

W11 is SO BAD people have to uninstall apps for it to work better.
new notepad feature is so stupid. they even remove the wordpad
Doesn't work anymore.
I'm still using the old version of notepad, as I type. I'll retest, and let you know, if it still works.
